1963年の印象的なヒット曲を石嶺聡子が歌っています。
77才の女性です。40才の初め頃、英会話教室に通っていました。その時
の日本人の先生がこの曲をギターで弾きながら会話のレッスンをして下さっていました。私は生まれて初めて聴いた曲だったと思います。とても感動しました。今でも大好きです。

交通事故で大親友を失い、自身も大怪我をして・・未来に描ける全てを失ったスキーター・デイビスを！見事に復活させたこの曲！！名曲と云われたこの曲を、いろんな歌手が唄ったけれど・・本家！スキーター・デイビスの唄には叶わなかった。スキーター・デイビスの唄には、絶望の淵から立ち上がろう！としながら・・それでも涙してしまう、哀しみ・・それが、聴く人を感動させる。当時のマスコミの報道。当時を知らないけれど・・今聴いても、感動する。だけど、石嶺さん！貴女の唄は、素晴らしい！！感動しました。
日本のマスコミ、隣国人の宣伝ばかりしないで、このような実力のある日本人歌手をもっと売り出せよ！

若い頃、仕事関係の方で石嶺さんと言う方がいました。とても気さくで穏やか感じの方で良くお話をしていましたが、後になって石嶺さんは、あの石嶺聡子さんのお父さんだと言うこと聞いて驚きました。きっと娘さんである聡子さんも素晴らしい人格のひとなんでしょうね。

この曲を初めて聴いたのはハーマンズ・ハーミッツでした。次に聴いたのはクロデーヌ・ロンジェでした。半世紀前のことです。いま石嶺さんの歌を聴いていいなあと。最初に歌ったのは忘れましたが、スキーター・デービスだったかな。やはりいい歌は半世紀経ってもいいですね。

下のコメントにもあるが、海外の方のほうが、この歌手の素晴らしさについて敏感に反応し感心している。それもコメント書き込み時期をみると１～２年前が多いから、2015~2016年に書き込みされたものでしょう。ここまでここ２年で海外のリスナーが反応しているにも拘わらず、日本ではこの歌手の才能を声を、生かす企画が上がらず、埋もれているというのが現実です。この人を生かせないというのは非常に惜しいことですね。

This is by far my favorite version of this song. I've heard Skeeter Davis, Brenda Lee, The Carpenters, and this one literally puts tears in my eyes. She has taken one of my favorite songs and added even more layers of beauty to this wonderful song.

This is a special melody; a measure of this is the "all-star" performers who have devoted their talents to it (as posted below): Skeeter Davis (of course), Brenda Lee, and The Carpenters. Which brings me to Lucy Thomas. I've been following her and have commented that she has the best pure voice since Karen Carpenter; I'd love to see her cover "End of the World". With voice and looks, Lucy is truly a future major star.

I've been in love with this song since the 1960s, but I didn't expect to hear it again in such a beautiful performance and with such a wonderfully selected orchestra.
So far I liked the most in the performance of "Herman's Hermits" and today such a wonderful surprise...

This is absolutely beautiful. Really. And I was around when Skeeter Davis came out with this originally in 1963. She performed very often in Nashville, Tennessee, where I grew up. Nashville was/is known as the country music capital. I graduated high school 3 years after she first started singing this song. I'm so very glad to hear this lady sing the song. I don't think I ever heard Skeeter sing it accompanied by an orchestra. That makes it all the more beautiful. Thanks for posting this.

I have seen Skeeter perform it live at the afternoon Opry shows back in the mid-80's. It was hard to believe in person.
