I'm asian and I know my hair wouldn't be spiky and silky as Cloud but I still enjoy playing him as a character and i don't feel insecure bout it because after all games are for us to escape the ugly reality, not complain the characters look unrealistic. Life is already ugly, don't make games look ugly and call it a life - like game
The thing is if a character is cool i really don't care, back in the days I never thought to myself that I hate being white because I liked CJ as a character in GTA San Andreas. Also there are plenty of really good looking guys in real life just like girls who have insane propotions the same ones that some of these insecure devs say are "unrealistic". Sure the majority aren't like that but I mean I'd rather play as a cool looking guy or a badass strong one than the average person I am in real life, I play games to live though a fantasy where everything is different and exciting.
Facts: i remembered back when Stellar Blade was announced the director of the games get some really nasty comment like calling him a virgin man fantasying hot character for making the game. Dude his literally married with a hot wife and his wife is the one who designed character like Eve so they definitely what they're talking about.
I can name a few more badass yet hot female characters who aren't the boss just cause they are female, 2B, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, Estelle Bright from Trails in the Sky, Laura S Arseid from Trails of Cold Steel, Elaine from Trails Through Daybreak and am sure there are much more, all from the East of course.
There's plenty of well written western women characters but they're usually not in the mainstream. Wonder woman is a great female character who has sadly ended up in the hands of terrible writers

Those are the characteristics of female video games chars, we don't wanna remember "Aggressive brutes" haha. First, second, third,four,five on my list of memorable, beautiful, femininity, females. Kasumi, Dead or Alive, Lightning- Claire Farron, she's in Final Fantasy 13 games and DissidiaNt, Princess Garnet, oh I loved her so much! She's the 16yr old girl in FF9. Ashe, Princess Ashelia of Final Fantasy 12, and Ayane of Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden. Do you love or memory any of those 5 girls?? A close number 6 will be Tifa Lockheart yeah! And I got a "soft spot" for Mai Shiranui, Naraka Bladepoint females, Kokoro, Hitomi, they are all not Rpg protagonists. But those girls have the "uncanny similar" look to my one younger sister haha! I'm from Asia, my sister is a 30s woman btw...

I like this take as someone who likes diversity. Western devs end up making characters to fit an agenda rather than making characters feel like actual people/characters. They make "characters" based around an ideology being their entire personality instead of being multifaceted people. Also with Eastern devs, even the men are beautiful/hot. They know what's up.
I've been playing Stellar Blade and The First Descendant, and one thing that strikes me is just the character designs. They're not afraid to elevate elegance, beauty and femininity to the surface. It looks like Eastern developers understand this. Meanwhile here in the West, we have the likes of Mrs. Freeze. When I first saw that abomination I asked myself who the fuck honestly looked at that design and thought it was good to go??? The industry needs a long overdue massive wake-up call. From Flintlock, Immortals of Aveum, Star War Outlaws, Suicide Squad, Concord to so much more, they all deserve to massively flop. I have no sympathy for what happens to these studios, (or to any form of entertainment that caters to the mythical "Modern Audience™"). You win stupid prizes for playing stupid games.
They think its "feminist" to reject feminity in favor of masculinized women, in reality they are showing how much these "feminists" actually despise women. Its why they all want to be "they them" now. They hate being women because they see it as weak, so they turn women into a "toxic masculine" stereotype and pat themselves on the back. They are also making everyone else automatically hate any game with a female protagonist and I will NEVER forgive them for it.
The thing is, you can make a beautiful character without them being overly sexualized, and western devs seem to have totally forgotten that. Nothing necessarily wrong with a character like Eve from Stellar blade, with the model-tier body wearing extremely tight/revealing clothing, but its not necessarily to everyones taste (I know it isnt mine.) But westeen devs are so caught up on the "don't sexualize women" train that they forgot you can make a character pretty without going all in on the giga-hot sex appeal. Don't want an overly sexualized character? Okay, but there's a difference between not super sexualized, and straight up unappealing. Tifa and Aerith are literally perfect representations of this. Tifa wears a miniskirt and a sportsbra, and an extremely valuptious physique, and runs around doing backflips and punching the shit out of enemies constantly. Aerith is modestly dressed, with a slimmer physique, shes pretty flat chested (though the OG FF7 art gave her some GIGA-ROUND hips which I'd like to think carried over to the new games) and despite their differences in design, she's just as gorgeous as Tifa. They both have clear, clean skin, petite shoulders (which most women have) large, expressive eyes of two beautiful different colors, long flowing hair, (anyone else notice how in western games no ones hair is longer than like, barely past the shoulder anymore?) They're both fashionable though they have different aesthetics, and as a result you have two of the most beloved female characters in gaming history. It's not even JUST about the looks, Tifa and Aerith are both absolute darlings on the personality front as well. Tifa is gentle, patient, supportive, good at cooking, and genuinely cares about others on a very deep level. Aerith is whimsical, playful, joyful, a healer, connects easily with children, and will put herself in grave danger to protect people she's only just met that day. And they still manage to be complex characters with flaws/hangups, traumas, and each have character arcs to complete. I just can't get over how dang selfless Tifa and Aerith are. Both always looking out for others, Tifa putting up with Cloud's issues and never giving up on him, even when he is an active danger to her and others. And Aerith, after over a decade of fighting tooth and nail to not be captured by Shinra again, allows herself to be captured in a heartbeat to protect a child she's known for minutes. Do we have ANYTHING resembling that in any recent western games? Even BG3 which was pretty well written, didn't have characters like these two (in the looks or personality department, personally I think most BG3 characters look pretty awful). All I'm saying is that playing through FF7 remake for the first time I was absolutely enraptured by Tifa and Aerith (and I'm a straight woman so it wasn't even from a waifu perspective) they are such a breath of fresh air in every way possible compared to what weve been getting for the last 10-ish years in western gaming. Wish we had more like them.
How about we make a game where we can play as female or male chars, with big roster like Path of Exile 2 or Diablo games and make 100s of outfits and outfits combinations. And see what suits the players, you know Black Desert, Naraka Bladepoint, Genshin style. And don't bother about who wants what. And please don't use the words "overly sexualized", our local languages don't have that definition aha... In Asia here we only have 0 to 100, full nackte to full clothed yeah. Can you imagine if they made Tifa and Aerith now? Tifa would have to be insufferable, mean and push people away to show that shes "not like other girls, she punches stuff, including holes in walls, cuz shes just like a guy!" She would also definitely have super short hair. Aerith would have to be aloof, act like an alien, never empathize with anyone and probably look androgynous or go by they/them just to show that shes "otherworldly" and therefore cannot have any stereotypical femininity, because being motherly and nice to children is regressive! Well sometimes too open is kinda uncomfortable to look at. I personally like my women fully clothed, while still maintain her beautiful face. I usually don't like my women looking like a stripper all the time

What i like from game made by asians are, that they actually made both gender pretty and strong, For an example, in genshin theres a female god, female knight, female assassin, and they all still look good, theres also male god, male knight, and male puppet??..?, but they still look good, When western make men less masculine, they make it gay, Meanwhile in some gatcha games, they simply make them last masculine even tho its looks like femboy, its not direct, no men kissing, no Lgbt flag, not even the gay talking tone, and Asian games actually understand about what is fiction, they didnt have to add every race inside the game just to make it "diverse", its fiction, real life biology doesnt need to work the same,

Like for example: If you give me the choice between playing something like Assassins Creed 3 and Cold Steel 3, I will pick Cold Steel 3. Final Fantasy vii has good story? Possible yeah... But me and many others we think FF7 story is quite mid, its passable. Best story of all Final Fantasy game is Final Fantasy 12 yea. Most likely you did not yet played 12 right? 12 is good I recommend...

The relationship between 7 and 12, its like if you had played 12, you will say, oh yeah 12 has a quite memorable story. 7 is a distant number Two haha... I tell you abit spoilers on FF12. The real protagonist of the game will show up after about 3 or 4 hours into the game. And we played as supporting chars until the real protagonist arrived. Makes it super memorable, if u ask me.
@zaskiaalsakila7248 That sounds good really good the main character to show in surprise I understand But you're not playing the original this explains you don't know the whole story let me tell you a spoiler too bit mine could be a longer due to it's hard to explain the beginning of the game Cloud jumping from the train this is actually Zack did this in FF7 crisis core which takes events before the original game Cloud in crisis core due to what happens there being injected with Alien cells he gets DID ( Dissocitiave identify disorder) he also get ptsd ( post traumatic stress disorder) and he has Cherohphobia ( a fear of happiness) all this and he doesn't remember what happened 5 years ago the real story doesn't kick until the very end of the game in OG game near the end of disc 2 you learn the real story which this will be in remake part 3 Also I highly recommend you to play the rebirth everything from remake enhanced and expanded so much better I do love talk about FF7 thank you!
In my opinion, it depends a lot on the game, if a game wants to be realistic all the characters cannot be perfect, it seems to me that the best games are the ones that have both characters that look normal and attractive characters, games in which all the characters are perfect are not realistic, aloy, abby they are characters that are realistic and they are not horrible either, they are simply normal
The only Ugly character I understand is aloy. She grew up in a post apocalyptic world, she’s a genetic clone of the woman who gave that world a chance, and now the whole entire weight of that world is in her shoulders….That kind of pressure would age and uglify anyone! I still remember before Forbidden West came out, someone “beautified” Aloy and as someone quipped, “she look like a 2nd class back alley street whore!” No. Aloy does not need to be pretty. The rest though? I’ll never understand.

The people whose faces are based off these characters, are beautiful women in real life. It really is a shame that western developers feel the need to uglify them in these games. The thing that bugs me is that Aloy was reasonably attractive in Zero Dawn and they went out of their way to make her look worse in Forbidden West. All they had to do was nothing, and they couldn't do it.

Like indie developers or anything related to Spyro and Darksiders. It honestly feels amazing. Like you're playing the kinda games that Sony typically released for the PS2. One thing about western sequels. I noticed that every characters in that sequels suddenly changed especially MJ. Last of us 2 suddenly self inserted a character and forces you to play it. Did not finished it though not because I hated that character but I dont like the game story directions, it feels stupid and I just return the game to my co worker
Whats crazy is, games like street fighter and tekken have perfectly demonstrated attractive diversity buy making male and female characters from different countries and backgrounds with amazing personalities. And low and behold, they're absolutely attractive to look at.
I would like to add about this thread that went into more detail about why this is. Basically, America has become more about what will make “profit” vs making art. Whereas Japan, many Japanese people have decent jobs. And with decent jobs means less stress about making ends meet WHICH means people with artists hobbies can put time into being creative and skillful.

I think at the end of the day, hot women is not a problem if the character is not badly executed and theres just enough diversity happening. We want something that wows or mesmerizes us. Its like a flower. Who wants the roses to look awful deliberately?
One thing i will disagree is that aloy doing things alone is treated as a good thing, her character arc in forbidden west is learning to work together.

This is why I like to play Fallout 4 and Skyrim. Pretty mods, and despite being a power house, you still needed help in their respectful games. Mostly to help you find your destination and goals, but it's still better than just being awesome for the sake of it.
It's not just a matter of attractiveness, it's also giving young people an inspiration to aim for in life. Take Goku, he a character who says to guys: be strong (physically and mentally), work hard for your goals, always try to improve yourself, meanwhile don't forget to be nice, gentle, compassionate even with the one who will not deserve it. Take Tifa: you can be very beautiful, not only as a genetic gift but put effort in your look, don't forget to smile, be sweet, caring, lovely, but at the same time learn determination, build up a strong personality and be the strong rock for the people around you that you love, so that you can be there for them when they need you. Western developers are beeing the superficial ones, implying that everything is reduced to esthetic and sexism, when in reality humans have infinite shades of emotions and nuances. We don't want the digital uglified version of people with a dry soul, we want likeable characters which can inspire us to be the best version of ourselves.
I agree for the most part, except with Marry Jane. The whole point of her character is to show that Pater and MJ are having issues with each other and that she doesn’t like feeling powerless when her lover is able to lift a bus with his bare hands. It’s bitchy on purpose and suits the narrative of the story (honestly this is lore accurate because she reminds me of my ex-girlfriends), and in the end they work things out. I think they went way too far in the sequel though. How does she defeat the symbiots so easily.
In the first game it is handed well, because by the end MJ understands that she is the "Stealth Character" while Peter is the "Fighting character" and that they work as partners because of that... in SM2... no.

Im a girl and part of why I dont really play western games either, even as a kid is the males. The men just arent attractive. They're either A) roided out OR B) over-realistic looking everydudes; generic brown hair and stubble guy in his 30s who looks like he could be 45. And the girls never seemed as cool. They never made me wish I could BE them the way Estelle from Trails in the Sky, for example, did. And somehow, despite western gamers accusing them of sexism, there's a lot more cool old lady characters in eastern titles, which I love. Even western indies have issues making male characters attractive, adding beards and hipster glasses all the time while keeping the girls pretty. Im grateful Square Enix, Atlus, and Konami still know how to make attractive characters male or female.
Carolina from RVB is a good example. Shes literally a girl boss being the number one freelancer, while caring for her team. But she has flaws in thr fact that she's very competitive and vindictive. Seeing her go from a competitive asshole to someone very compassionate about her friends is great to see
Aloy makes me sad because her concept design was great, the whole horizon series in general should've done with being more styled so there's less incongruity with the genuinely awesome concept of robo dinos.
They also don't do the realistic face scans they actually make character designs something I wish western studios would stop trying to go for the realistic look.
you know what's the good thing about concord or dustborn? They didn't ruin an existing IP. Developers are free to do what they want when they're making a game. But I feel if you are relying on an existing IP with a huge fanbase behind it. It's mandatory you have to respect the source material and make the games what the fan wants, not what you want.

King of fighters, fatal fury and DOA, We got plenty of games featuring scantily clad women. But once we start playing the game, we even forget they were there. I just got this video recommended, it was a very good video. But its funny because I got another video recommended about woke and DEI in games and the dude was just rambling on about how its not real. its always interesting how some people just ignore blatant problems and get praised while videos like these are always well written but get negative feedback.
From what I've observed in FFVII fandom, for lots of people Tifa's personality is… debatable, to say the least. She is, by her own admission, is a people-pleaser, which is a not cool trait to have (she admits this as well). Tifa's actions throughout the story are also viewed differently. She outright lies in Cloud's face about how long she's been living in Midgar. She plays “victim-card” in Kalm in the most immature way possible, she refused to tell Cloud the truth about Zack's death (and she knows Cloud cherishes him, he blatantly tells her this) even after Cloud caught her lying red-handed. And what was the reason? “I didn't want to upset you.” It doesn't sit right with a lot of people, but hey, it makes a character flawed and well-rounded.
Grew up with jrpgs, and have a very hard time trying to enjoy western made rpgs. Mostly bc of the visuals. People in jrpgs are so pretty because the visual lenguage of Square Enix and other companies comes from anime and manga. As fan of both comics and manga I know for a fact manga artist really want to please their audience, while american comics are more about self expression above everything. A good example of this is Robert Crumb, one look at his art and you know he draws for himself only. In the japanese comics industry characters arent 'japanese', 'white' or 'asian' they are cartoons. Drawn to look cool, heroic, cute or sexy. Not to represent reality. This is what I mean when I say the japanese want to please the audience with visual beauty and harmony. And this is why the race of characters like Cloud, Tiffa, Ryu, Ken Masters, Chun Li, Iori Yagami, Dante, Naruto, Goku and a million others is hard to identify. Because they are cartoons, and it doesnt really matter anyway.
Why does Silver Sable looks way more attractive than Mary Jane and Silver Sable gonna go 40. At this point it is better not to self insert at all they could make MJ way more attractive than BlackCat but nope. My Point putting self insert on an existing story just ruins it. If they wanted to make a self insert make an original one not borrowed from an existing one then turn it into what you think is Ideal. This is why some Mary Sue type characters became way more hated. Perfect (the Flaws they have is they always right despite being entirely wrong) and aggressive, Feministic or Prideful, Lone wolf, and enigmatic or less emotional. BlackCat became the Ideal female lead due to being the entire opposite of Mary Jane despite tricking Peter to get what she wanted but you can see that she asked help, appreciates the help and at least when goes down bad she did made Peter back off a few times warning her but Peter is just either kind or downbad for BlackCat. Even in story writing BlackCat would be a better character even she became Bi or something but putting it without actual context thats just lazy.

Aloy literally fought the Zeniths with a whole crew of allies she met. Yes she was hesitant to take help, but eventually she realized she couldn't do everything alone to save everyone just cuz shes a clone. Thats called character development.

Outside western fantasy and day US made by very popular devs like rockstar and blizzard. JRPG's and asian based games has some of the most iconic gameplay, storytelling and game designs bar none, no western games could cook like nier, DMC and etc. they've always been cooking since. Only way to compare is from CN and or korean developers. Even the most beloved RPGmaker games like undertale was inspired by touhou and OFF, these mechanics weren't made by any western games all of these games were inspired by asian games! Don't even get me started on hoq good the turn based gameplay of japanese game studios are, especially cooked games like trails series. Your favorite fighting games? Made by japanese, your favorite hackNslash? Made by japanese, your favorite story and fantasy? Made by japanese. The only thing that comes close is world of warcraft and that's an expansion that's been made for years to decades ago.

I like this take as someone who likes diversity. Western devs end up making characters to fit an agenda rather than making characters feel like actual people/characters. They make "characters" based around an ideology being their entire personality instead of being multifaceted people.
Also with Eastern devs, even the men are beautiful/hot. They know what's up.
I've been playing Stellar Blade and The First Descendant, and one thing that strikes me is just the character designs. They're not afraid to elevate elegance, beauty and femininity to the surface. It looks like Eastern developers understand this.
Meanwhile here in the West, we have the likes of Mrs. Freeze. When I first saw that abomination I asked myself who the fuck honestly looked at that design and thought it was good to go???
The industry needs a long overdue massive wake-up call. From Flintlock, Immortals of Aveum, Star War Outlaws, Suicide Squad, Concord to so much more, they all deserve to massively flop. I have no sympathy for what happens to these studios, (or to any form of entertainment that caters to the mythical "Modern Audience™"). You win stupid prizes for playing stupid games.
They think its "feminist" to reject feminity in favor of masculinized women, in reality they are showing how much these "feminists" actually despise women. Its why they all want to be "they them" now. They hate being women because they see it as weak, so they turn women into a "toxic masculine" stereotype and pat themselves on the back. They are also making everyone else automatically hate any game with a female protagonist and I will NEVER forgive them for it.
The thing is, you can make a beautiful character without them being overly sexualized, and western devs seem to have totally forgotten that.
Nothing necessarily wrong with a character like Eve from Stellar blade, with the model-tier body wearing extremely tight/revealing clothing, but its not necessarily to everyones taste (I know it isnt mine.) But westeen devs are so caught up on the "don't sexualize women" train that they forgot you can make a character pretty without going all in on the giga-hot sex appeal. Don't want an overly sexualized character? Okay, but there's a difference between not super sexualized, and straight up unappealing.
Tifa and Aerith are literally perfect representations of this. Tifa wears a miniskirt and a sportsbra, and an extremely valuptious physique, and runs around doing backflips and punching the shit out of enemies constantly.
Aerith is modestly dressed, with a slimmer physique, shes pretty flat chested (though the OG FF7 art gave her some GIGA-ROUND hips which I'd like to think carried over to the new games) and despite their differences in design, she's just as gorgeous as Tifa.
They both have clear, clean skin, petite shoulders (which most women have) large, expressive eyes of two beautiful different colors, long flowing hair, (anyone else notice how in western games no ones hair is longer than like, barely past the shoulder anymore?) They're both fashionable though they have different aesthetics, and as a result you have two of the most beloved female characters in gaming history.
It's not even JUST about the looks, Tifa and Aerith are both absolute darlings on the personality front as well. Tifa is gentle, patient, supportive, good at cooking, and genuinely cares about others on a very deep level. Aerith is whimsical, playful, joyful, a healer, connects easily with children, and will put herself in grave danger to protect people she's only just met that day. And they still manage to be complex characters with flaws/hangups, traumas, and each have character arcs to complete.
I just can't get over how dang selfless Tifa and Aerith are. Both always looking out for others, Tifa putting up with Cloud's issues and never giving up on him, even when he is an active danger to her and others. And Aerith, after over a decade of fighting tooth and nail to not be captured by Shinra again, allows herself to be captured in a heartbeat to protect a child she's known for minutes.
Do we have ANYTHING resembling that in any recent western games? Even BG3 which was pretty well written, didn't have characters like these two (in the looks or personality department, personally I think most BG3 characters look pretty awful).
All I'm saying is that playing through FF7 remake for the first time I was absolutely enraptured by Tifa and Aerith (and I'm a straight woman so it wasn't even from a waifu perspective) they are such a breath of fresh air in every way possible compared to what weve been getting for the last 10-ish years in western gaming. Wish we had more like them.
How about we make a game where we can play as female or male chars, with big roster like Path of Exile 2 or Diablo games and make 100s of outfits and outfits combinations. And see what suits the players, you know Black Desert, Naraka Bladepoint, Genshin style. And don't bother about who wants what. And please don't use the words "overly sexualized", our local languages don't have that definition aha... In Asia here we only have 0 to 100, full nackte to full clothed yeah. Both females and males. 0- No clothes, 100- looks like Battlefield 5 Ilse Shattenwolf yeah! Do you know how Ilse looks like? The relationship between 7 and 12, its like if you had played 12, you will say, oh yeah 12 has a quite memorable story. 7 is a distant number Two haha... I tell you abit spoilers on FF12. The real protagonist of the game will show up after about 3 or 4 hours into the game. And we played as supporting chars until the real protagonist arrived. Makes it super memorable, if u ask me.

In my opinion, it depends a lot on the game, if a game wants to be realistic all the characters cannot be perfect, it seems to me that the best games are the ones that have both characters that look normal and attractive characters, games in which all the characters are perfect are not realistic, aloy, abby they are characters that are realistic and they are not horrible either, they are simply normal
The only Ugly character I understand is aloy. She grew up in a post apocalyptic world, she’s a genetic clone of the woman who gave that world a chance, and now the whole entire weight of that world is in her shoulders….That kind of pressure would age and uglify anyone! I still remember before Forbidden West came out, someone “beautified” Aloy and as someone quipped, “she look like a 2nd class back alley street whore!” No. Aloy does not need to be pretty. The rest though? I’ll never understand.

The thing that bugs me is that Aloy was reasonably attractive in Zero Dawn and they went out of their way to make her look worse in Forbidden West. All they had to do was nothing, and they couldn't do it.

It's not just a matter of attractiveness, it's also giving young people an inspiration to aim for in life. Take Goku, he a character who says to guys: be strong (physically and mentally), work hard for your goals, always try to improve yourself, meanwhile don't forget to be nice, gentle, compassionate even with the one who will not deserve it. Take Tifa: you can be very beautiful, not only as a genetic gift but put effort in your look, don't forget to smile, be sweet, caring, lovely, but at the same time learn determination, build up a strong personality and be the strong rock for the people around you that you love, so that you can be there for them when they need you.
Western developers are beeing the superficial ones, implying that everything is reduced to esthetic and sexism, when in reality humans have infinite shades of emotions and nuances. We don't want the digital uglified version of people with a dry soul, we want likeable characters which can inspire us to be the best version of ourselves.
The change the existing character's gender also happened in Guilty Gear.
I agree for the most part, except with Marry Jane. The whole point of her character is to show that Pater and MJ are having issues with each other and that she doesn’t like feeling powerless when her lover is able to lift a bus with his bare hands. It’s bitchy on purpose and suits the narrative of the story (honestly this is lore accurate because she reminds me of my ex-girlfriends), and in the end they work things out. I think they went way too far in the sequel though. How does she defeat the symbiots so easily.
In the first game it is handed well, because by the end MJ understands that she is the "Stealth Character" while Peter is the "Fighting character" and that they work as partners because of that... in SM2... no.

Carolina from RVB is a good example. Shes literally a girl boss being the number one freelancer, while caring for her team. But she has flaws in thr fact that she's very competitive and vindictive.

Aloy makes me sad because her concept design was great, the whole horizon series in general should've done with being more styled so there's less incongruity with the genuinely awesome concept of robo dinos.
They also don't do the realistic face scans they actually make character designs something I wish western studios would stop trying to go for the realistic look.

you know what's the good thing about concord or dustborn? They didn't ruin an existing IP. Developers are free to do what they want when they're making a game. But I feel if you are relying on an existing IP with a huge fanbase behind it. It's mandatory you have to respect the source material and make the games what the fan wants, not what you want.

But its funny because I got another video recommended about woke and DEI in games and the dude was just rambling on about how its not real. its always interesting how some people just ignore blatant problems and get praised while videos like these are always well written but get negative feedback.
From what I've observed in FFVII fandom, for lots of people Tifa's personality is… debatable, to say the least.
She is, by her own admission, is a people-pleaser, which is a not cool trait to have (she admits this as well). Tifa's actions throughout the story are also viewed differently. She outright lies in Cloud's face about how long she's been living in Midgar. She plays “victim-card” in Kalm in the most immature way possible, she refused to tell Cloud the truth about Zack's death (and she knows Cloud cherishes him, he blatantly tells her this) even after Cloud caught her lying red-handed. And what was the reason? “I didn't want to upset you.”
It doesn't sit right with a lot of people, but hey, it makes a character flawed and well-rounded.

Grew up with jrpgs, and have a very hard time trying to enjoy western made rpgs. Mostly bc of the visuals.
People in jrpgs are so pretty because the visual lenguage of Square Enix and other companies comes from anime and manga. As fan of both comics and manga I know for a fact manga artist really want to please their audience, while american comics are more about self expression above everything. A good example of this is Robert Crumb, one look at his art and you know he draws for himself only. In the japanese comics industry characters arent 'japanese', 'white' or 'asian' they are cartoons. Drawn to look cool, heroic, cute or sexy. Not to represent reality. This is what I mean when I say the japanese want to please the audience with visual beauty and harmony. And this is why the race of characters like Cloud, Tiffa, Ryu, Ken Masters, Chun Li, Iori Yagami, Dante, Naruto, Goku and a million others is hard to identify. Because they are cartoons, and it doesnt really matter anyway.

My Point putting self insert on an existing story just ruins it. If they wanted to make a self insert make an original one not borrowed from an existing one then turn it into what you think is Ideal. This is why some Mary Sue type characters became way more hated.
Perfect (the Flaws they have is they always right despite being entirely wrong) and aggressive, Feministic or Prideful, Lone wolf, and enigmatic or less emotional.
BlackCat became the Ideal female lead due to being the entire opposite of Mary Jane despite tricking Peter to get what she wanted but you can see that she asked help, appreciates the help and at least when goes down bad she did made Peter back off a few times warning her but Peter is just either kind or downbad for BlackCat. Even in story writing BlackCat would be a better character even she became Bi or something but putting it without actual context thats just lazy.

Aloy literally fought the Zeniths with a whole crew of allies she met. Yes she was hesitant to take help, but eventually she realized she couldn't do everything alone to save everyone just cuz shes a clone. Thats called character development.

JRPG's and asian based games has some of the most iconic gameplay, storytelling and game designs bar none, no western games could cook like nier, DMC and etc. they've always been cooking since. Only way to compare is from CN and or korean developers.
Even the most beloved RPGmaker games like undertale was inspired by touhou and OFF, these mechanics weren't made by any western games all of these games were inspired by asian games!
Don't even get me started on hoq good the turn based gameplay of japanese game studios are, especially cooked games like trails series.
