This dude is on another level of ear training and his mic technique is incredibly instinctual. He's so well attuned to the frequencies that displease him and adjusts accordingly stupid fast, he's literally EQing on the spot. 6:09 Watch the way he dodges frequencies when he says, "over the land and water too." He's constantly pointing his lips away from the capsule to avoid the muddy frequencies like a make shift HPF.

You used to teach me back 15 years ago and I just thought to look you up now. I used to be into Rock music back then but I've since been playing Jazz for the last 7 years so I guess you influenced me in some way! Just wish I used my time with you more wisely! Thanks for putting up with me back then Anton and look forward to seeing what you're up to now days!

A high-quality review! When it comes to talking, I prefer the microphone to have a good signal / noise ratio. Sennheiser e865 produces a lot of self noise, that’s what i hear. It is a more audible noise than that produced by the e965 (21 dB of self noise; sensitivity is 7mV/Pa)

I had the e965 and had to return it. I have a few live condenser mics, including a Neumann KMS105, Beta 87, etc. and the e965 was the only one that would not cooperate with my wireless adapter (XVive U3c). There was a very noticeable hum present.

I came here because I have (3) 865's. That tap test on the mics was smart. As an operator I'm having issues with the 865. Particularly handling issues. I have amateur singers that fidget and even pro's that like to fondle the body of the mic. The simple brush of the mic is transmitting down the line and it sounds awful especially for live streams. There is a ton of handling noise on the 865. We went with the 865 because the 600 band was sold and we had to move to the G band @ 474 to 550 Mhz. The previous 865's had much less handling noise. These new 865's transmit "allot" of handling, so unless you plan to use them on a stand look elsewhere. The tone is different as well. The tone of the older 865 is warmer and the newer 865 sounds thin with less body. Sounds like a boost in the hi frequency range around 8k to 12k. In my experience, my old 865's sounds like your wired 965. I wonder if the capsules are interchangeable like the Shure's? The 865's are not a good fit for my application. I hope Senn will trade the 865 for the 965.

I noticed when researching recently that the 965 seems to be under £300 now. I've just checked and it ranges from £559.66 (Amazon), £399.00 (Anderton's), £275 (Thomann)! That's a huge difference.

The old mics will accumulate moisture/oil/dust on the diaphragm which reduce the higher frequencies. With less volume for high frequencies, you hear more of the mid to low. Same design, new mic & it sounds suddenly brighter & less boomy bottom. Like new guitar with new strings vs older. Curious if they look different inside?
Wireless systems can change/limit freq response. Manufacturer or were&tear may cause slight differences.

Interesting, astute, charmingly entertaining - thank you (again) for a great video. Preferring the (admittedly more expensive) Earthworks Audio SR40V you turned me onto in another video - so much so that it’s arriving tomorrow. Tried the newer Sennheisers and don’t click with their way of sugarcoating things. Have - and very much like, and often use - an old MD431 that sounds much better than the next-gen one tested. In YT comparisons between the old and the new MD431, one can easily hear Sennheiser used different components and managed to „verschlimmbessern“ the sound (funny and cool German way of „improving something for the worse“ - haha). I figure the SR40V is going to really be my final mic purchase. It’s been quite a journey over the years. Oh, and I subbed you today after watching this, my 4th or 5th video of yours.

@@AntonBrowne Thank you, kind Sir. And indeed I did enjoy it…for about half an hour whilst trying it out on my HK Audio Polar 10 column speaker before returning it to Thomann despite loving its immersive responsiveness and sonic spectrum. I really wanted to justify keeping it based on those qualities, but couldn‘t simply because it didn‘t at all work out well with my speaker. Unlike my MD-431 which delivers a smooth, detailed and full response on that speaker, the SR40V‘s otherwise phenomenal sound was marred by a lot of popping on plosives/consonants. I‘ll admit having miserable mic-handling ability, since I normally play acoustic guitar plus harmonica and need to have the mic on a stand, and am relegated to „riding“ the mic up close most of the time to prevent feedback. But I tried to emulate Anton Brownesque mic handling, and still got quite a bit of popping. Also tried turning the gain down (and the PA‘s volume up) to make things less sensitive, but that didn‘t eliminate the issue entirely, while making the PA a bit too quiet. In the end, I decided to not keep the Earthworks on a hunch that it might one day work for me, e.g. with a different PA (such as the JBL PRX One). Its price tag of €800 here in Germany is simply too high to have it sitting in a mic case unused. So I sadly said goodbye to this marvelous mic for now. Perhaps to be revisited one fine day. P.S. Forgot to mention that the mic also caused a bit of feedback in the upper frequency range, though that is sure to be caused by a bit of artificially boosted presence on the speaker, itself, so no fault of the mic‘s. That said, it’s too troublesome to deal with, and the MD-431 has no such issues.

11:10 I feel the same about voiceovers. Engineers need to understand what a voice actor needs from a mic, and how they use it in a home studio. Great job, and a have a new found respect for the e965 now. It stands head and shoulders above the rest. What pickup pattern were you using with the e965?

I have three e865s and I'm pretty happy with them (I'm fussy!). However i find i always have to boost the high frequency 2 or 3 dB to balance the sound. They also don't seem to suit some singers for some reason i really can't fathom, so i just give them a good old SM58.
I just bought a beta 87c and it blows the Sennheisers out of the water.... probably. I've only used it with three very, very good singers so far. I'll keep experimenting.

    I have a md531 wich is a great dynamic.
But also have the condenser 5032p (and the non blackfire 4032) I'd love to know how you'd think they stack up against the modern Neumann 104(+) and 105. I love the 5/4 032p for my voice. More than the Neumann's (which are absolutely great). They are electret condensers instead of true condensers. But they sound great in nearly every voice. Dutch TV had the 4031 (the wireless version) between 87/88 to 94/95 for nearly every concert or live microphone musical use. I considered buying up a 4031 and making it wired as a backup for my 5032p but them I came across the 4032 (I didn't know they existed) for 100 euros (the Blackfires ones are going for ridiculous prices 350/399 euros.) The 4 was completely the same as the 5 except for the printing on the microphone.
If you are willing to test one of them against the modern top condensers let me know I'll happily lend you one. You are clearly careful with gear. And I love your reviews (I might have said that too often now.).

I would LOVE a video comparing the mexican sm58, the Beta58, the Sennheiser e835, and the Sennheiser e935.
When you perform live, and there’s a technician on, do you prefer if he has tried to even out the microphones frequency response, so it is very flat all the way up to the mid to mid-high frequencies, or do you enjoy any Mojo you get from the mic?
