- Living in Japan you get used to earthquakes pretty fast. But then there are the big ones.
Yesterday a magnitude 7.4 quake struck - Japan's biggest in 10 years - off the coast of Sendai. Today, we inspect the damage.

🙏 A huge thanks for all the kind words guys! As much as I love Sendai, unfortunately it's one of the most seismically active regions in Japan.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't on edge still a day later, given it was such a shocking and intense earthquake. Most earthquakes start as a faint rumble and then get worse and worse. This one felt like a bomb had gone off a few floors below and catapulted the entire floor upwards in a very sudden and unpleasant manner. Since then we've had quite a few aftershocks, such as the one recorded at the end of the video.
But I think above all it's important to be grateful that despite the huge earthquake casualties were pretty low and damage fairly minimal, with power and water outages fixed incredibly fast. It's a testament to Japan's astonishing engineering and emergency services.
As for me, it's time to get back to work scrubbing up the studio!

The fact you can hear the impact this had on Chris in his voice is really heartbreaking. Hes always got such a calm and collected voice, but you can tell just how shaken up he is from the earthquake and seeing the state of his studio… Ive only ever experienced one teeny tiny earthquake, but Ive been in some pretty bad wind storms and a EF 4 tornado before and thats scary. I cant imagine how an earthquake must feel, though I know the New Madrid fault, which is sort of near me, has been overdue for a decent sized one for quite some time now.

I grew up in San Diego where Earthquakes were common but small. There was one that was around the same magnitude as this one in Japan that happened southeast of Tijuana, Mexico. I didn't feel the full brunt of it because I was about an hour and a half north in a town called Dana Point when I felt it. It was the only time I was ever outside and standing up during an earthquake and it was weird to say the least. I was about 4-5 hours northwest of the epicenter for context.
It lasted much longer than a typical quake and it was actually a bit nauseating because it felt like my stomach and internal organs were moving around and at the same time my whole body felt like jelly. I had a good sense of what it might have been like closer to the epicenter like all my friends back home had felt.
@@caladbolg777 my mom lived in Escondido in the late 60s to the mid 70s. So I'm sure she experienced her fair share of decent sized earthquakes, but I know she said she never minded the earthquakes, it was the wildfires that she hated, especially when they mixed with the Santa Ana winds. She was 8 in 1970 and still remembers the Laguna wildfire and others that year that eventually led to Firescope. They used one of her neighbors planes to help dump water for one of the fires, can't remember if she said which one.
Same. I had two bad run with weather for now. Once was a hurricane back in America where the Empire State Building shakes like hell while I was on it and another one was an earth quake at Spain. I watched a multiple big immovable racks shakes like it’s a jelly on a giant moving plate. I thought I lost my mind that day until I looked around and everyone is just as stunned.

Glad to hear you're safe Chris, honestly - keep the Maneki-neko in the shop, it obviously has some sentimental value to you and now it's got some extra character to it - can't expect to run a ramen shop without a few tipsy customers breaking a few plates, can't imagine that's too uncommon somewhere like Roppongi or Kabukichou hope to see the set, the neko and yourself back in action as soon as possible

Actually a few days ago my country also get hit by an earthquake, my school was in the middle of a test and suddenly the ground start moving and everyone is panicking and screaming hiding bellow a table. I also took advantage of that incident to see my friend answers.

Watching him put that frame back on the shelf and say "There, everything's better now." My my tear up a bit. When a natural disaster hits and you come back to find the one place that should be safe wrecked it shatters something inside you.
Just finding one item untouched or minimal broken means so much. Just one item where you left it.
I can remember doing the same type of thing I found an item and put it back on the shelf and said aloud for no reason "There, all better." I have no idea why I said that because everything was far from better I just felt I had to find sanity in that moment.

It must’ve been hard ☹️ I’m grateful to live in an area where natural disaster rarely happens. I only keep items that have a lot of sentimental value, so I can’t imagine how it would feel like to see it all broken or shattered to pieces because of something that we can’t control.
@@rin__ I live in Florida so we get hurricanes. When I was 5 Elena hit and we had to evacuate 3 times because the water kept raising even at the shelters. I remember walking in my Grandparent's front yard and it was still in the front end(for non Southerns the backside of hurricanes are what does the most damage)and the ground was so waterlogged that there had to be 4inches of standing water.
4 days later and my house had 6 feet of water in it. My solid hardwood dresser and chest of drawers were floating in the living room. You just go into shell shock because your life had suddenly turned upside-down.
Now from the 1st day of hurricanes season to the last day I'm like a clinging to the ceiling waiting for the news to say a tropical depression has taken form.

Yeah, I too am glad they're okay. I've never really been in a earthquake before, even though I've spent half my life in California. So I don't really know personally just how terrifying it is just from the shaking alone, but I know it would be scary and dangerous when everything around you starts falling down.
I've been through a variety of them living in CA, from mediocre 3 pointers to shockers as high as 7. And all can cause damage and casualties depending on the epicenter and depth. A 5 pointer was shaking my house like Jell-O, and a 7 pointer 3 years ago started slow, then went faster and faster to the point I thought I was gonna get buried alive due to the strain the house had. It's painful. You do not want to feel what an 8 or 9 pointer is like what Japan and Mexico felt through. That is hell for 30 seconds
"Oh, I'm gonna die now.." This really resonated with me, felt exactly the same way when I was living in Fukushima during the 2011 earthquake. Stay safe mate.
This weird calm sense of impending doom is just something you never forget.
I never experienced an earthquake but I saw people who lived through that particular earthquake talk about very similar feelings that I experienced during my experience.

Both of my aunts(who is currently in japan right now) felt that earthquake and decided to videocall the fam, they were panicking didn't knew what to do. my family was praying for their safety and trying to make them calm down, gave them advices to stay away from this and that. it was truly terrifying

Chances of a bigger one happening are 10% and slowly decrease over time (here in the US, the Ridgecrest events were the rarity. 6.4 on the 4th of July, only for a bigger one to happen the next day). Basically, treat it as a foreshock until the next 3 months or so
I live in an earthquake country (New Zealand)..I agree with this comment. Be prepared for aftershocks.
3 consecutive quakes with similar strength, from a cluster. Be prepared for a BIG one soon, or be glad the plates have expended all the pressure.

I had an idea: If you saved the shards of your ceramic cat (Maneki Neko), it would be wonderful to use the "Kintsugi" technique to try and repair the figure. Not only is it beautiful, it could serve a strong symbolic message of recovery, and so on~

What is Kintsugi?
@@mq5731 It's a sort of ancient artform where objects (usually ceramics) that have been shattered or chipped are pieced back together like a puzzle, and basically "welded" together using lines of gold-infused lacquer 💛
I can imagine how it feels to walk into that beautiful studio that was built so recently and see so much destroyed. Luckily, all the bowls and small items can be replaced in time... but you are right to worry about that water. If the studio is taking water damage that will cause the most damage. This crushed me. Chris, you may have handled it better than I would’ve. Your new place was a get away for all of us, and we all felt apart of it. Seen earthquake videos, but never had personal attachment. Your lost was a personal attachment to all your viewers. With you all the way buddy!

I totally feel you, Chris. I experienced a massive earthquake back in 2017 here in Mexico City and I could sincerely relate when you said that it was the first time you actually thought you were going to die. It's a very traumatizing experience, and the fact that it's collective makes it very different from other bad life experiences. But living in a place with so much seismic activity has taught me that you have to trust that whatever you built once, you can rebuild. As long as you and your loved ones are OK, the rest will eventually come back and sometimes even better. I send you a huge hug and I promise that the unertainty and fear that you feel right now will eventually pass.
I used to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, until recently. And just all the talk of “waiting for the Big One” is traumatizing. My anxiety grew every year I lived there. (Now I live in Tennessee where we worry about tornadoes, but I grew up in the Midwest, so the tornadoes around here don’t really scare me as I know what to expect. 😂)
I was living in CDMX at the time, it was a really awful time but the way communities came together in the aftermath was profoundly beautiful

I felt this earthquake all the way up in Hokkaido. There we just had some mild shaking, but considering Hokkaido doesn’t tend to get many earthquakes, I knew the epicenter must have been pretty intense. It’s great that you’re okay and that damage overall was kept to a minimum. Japanese infrastructure is crazy!

I don't think you can actually choose your JET placement unless you have a medical reason. Eitherway, earthquakes can occur anywhere in Japan as far as I know. An earthquake could happen in your hometown/country. It shouldnd't be a driving factor in your decision. Thats how I see it personally.
Remember this has only been the worst in ten years they're not all to this extent, but I get what you mean
To try to comfort you a little bit: don't worry mate, these things are rare occurences (at least above M5). I know how scary and uncertain they can make one feel (having felt numerous earthquakes myself). It sucks that Northeastern Japan has gone through so much over the past 12 years (with the 2011 tsunami still fresh in people's minds and put off plenty from ever going there). Earthquakes are probably a smaller worry compared to the possibly ensuing tsunamis they may trigger. So, in general anywhere 10-15km inland from the coast tends to be pretty safe. If you really want to be risk-averse as much as possible (there is absolutely nothing wrong with that and would instead be palliating if you struggle with panic or anxiety), then the general rule is to stick to the Sea of Japan and Kyushu or Southern Honshu. I hope your JET application and interview goes great and the best of luck to you on possibly having a great time in Japan.

Earthquakes can happen just about anywhere in Japan, it shouldn’t deter where you choose. Know that the country sits on tectonic plates and know how to be prepared for such emergency situations is the best you can do. Japan has tons of safety measures and experience with earthquakes so you’re in good hands in the event you ever experience one.
Earthquakes can happen ANYWHERE scientifically speaking. Just more frequent or intense on the ring of fire. 18 1/2 years in japan I've experienced earthquakes big and small, all over the island. Fukushima was worse for me though as I was on a business meeting there.
I also live in Sendai and I'm relieved that Chris is safe.
Seismological experts are warning of the possibility of more big earthquakes during the next week.
Please be vigilant and prepared.
This sounds so scary. I've only been through one earthquake and it was small that was unsettling enough. I was in an area that doesn't normally get them.
Are these larger earthquakes a sign of something bigger to come? I know you said it's a possibility and not a guarantee, but still. Crazy all these events are just popping off, with no time to rest. Hopefully this is the end of it, though.
@@mathewgagnier9432 Sometimes they are and sometimes they're not, it depends. The quake in this video had a foreshock, but it was only 2 minutes beforehand.
Usually big quakes happen in cycles, so you know when one is due, but predicting exactly when is next to impossible. The Great East quake for example was anticipated to occur within the next 30 years in the mid to late 2000s. And that quake had foreshocks in the days leading up to it. California's cycle for "the big one" is estimated to be 243 years, but it's been 315 since the last one...
As someone who was in Kobe for the earthquake in 95 (actually in Shioya outside the epicenter) I'm glad you're okay, understand how terrifying it is, and the next few days will have lots of small earthquakes that are also terrifying. Hopefully water, power, and gas are still working and the destruction is not too terrible. Hopefully you can get out and volunteer to help with those who didn't fare as well.
Volunteer? Why would he think about volunteering when his studio is in a right shape and that's his job. Himself > anyone else at the moment. Dude needs to take care of his own before he thinks about anyone else.

@@chainsaw8507 Bruh 100%. I was just in a massive flood situation in QLD, Australia. I'm sorry but I couldn't care less about anyone else. My family comes first. My own house came first. I made sure my family and myself were 100% safe and okay before I even THOUGHT to help anyone else. I put myself and my loved ones before anyone else on this planet. Period.

It this not to say that others are no wrong, as it is important to help others when crisis arise but if you are struggling to help yourself first. Then (from a practical standpoint) what good can you do to help others?

I've felt a few of Japan's recent "big ones" and nothing is as scary and as humbling. It's truly scary at a base and instinctual level. A missile or lightning strike is over immediately. A flood or typhoon you can prepare for. A pandemic is an ongoing struggle. But an earthquake? They just *happen* and all you can do is hold on and hope that mother nature has not decided to kill you that day while your world literally falls down around you.

For missiles, if it's not the big bois, it's usually a lot of missiles and you here the whistling of it dropping just before it hits not knowing if it's hitting your house next, I've experienced it in Syria but honestly I think I would be more scared in an earthquake like holy shit the ground is continously shaking, thankfully Japan has proper infrastructure for earthquakes, stay safe
@@Rain_MG The only one I've ever felt made my high rise in Ottawa crack some of the outer coating. I initially thought it was a loud construction effect or a bunch of heavy vehicles passing over the adjacent overpass (sometimes they made the building vibrate). After it kept going for tens of seconds and you could feel the sway (and our buildings are NOT designed for this, let alone older ones like mine), I just laid in bed and waited. 13 floors up, there's not much you could do if the building went over. I wasn't fearful but only beause I was at a pretty lousy place in life and the thought of dying wasn't bothersome. Now, with a family, I'd be worried about them and how they'd do with out me. Or them getting squished with me, but now we're in s house so it'd have to be something very significant to destroy that.
65m waves on the ocean when your mast only goes 10m up from the deck, flooding where the water comes so fast it throws cars around like pebbles and when it hits buildings, they get blown to bits more than gently waterlogged, volcanic explosions and huge liquid stone flows of lava, earthquakes, EF-5 Twisters, and likely any massive bombardment or a nuclear weapon detonation.... they're all in the 'well beyond man to prevent' category and they can take so many lives.... good engineering in Japan sure helps limit the carnage, but as time goes by, more places are seeing disasters (climate change) so maybe the rest of the world will have to follow suit and harden their communities against the most likely mega-events. That takes decades and a lot of $$$.

To be fair, you cannot be anything but positive after an earthquake that bad and with so few casualties.
In my country when an earthquake of the same strength hit, 1500 people died and 2 billion USD in damages.
(It was 1977 but I doubt that even now we are prepared for earthquakes of that strength like Japan is)

I'm glad all three of you are OK. I can't imagine how terrifying that was and it's always amazing to see how good the response from the Japanese public works system is. It really sucks this happened so quickly after you go the studio built but it is nice to see it mostly appears to be cosmetic damage and replaceables that won't be too bad monetarily.
Chris, if you assess the value of the damage. Please start a gofundme page and we will all contribute with the restoration of the studio. This was your pride and joy! And we are so incredibly lucky to have a content creator like you around (for free even). I would be more than happy to help, and I bet more people would as well. Anyway, It's great knowing that you, Sharla and Natsuki are alive and well. It's great to see your friends helping out during such difficult times.
Water leak not withstanding, I would imagine the biggest cost here is probably the time needed to source and replace set items and put everything back again. Having your schedule demolished is the real productivity killer
@@JN.0_o definitely... and that's why I feel like we should contribute and perhaps Chris can hire the team to help him rebuild the set without his own intervention. That way he can concentrate on his creativity and not worry about economics and go shopping, repairing the things that are broken.
Only Chris can keep a smile on his face in a time like this. I hope you can get back on your feet soon and I feel really bad for all the damage that has been done that will cost a pretty penny.

I feel you man. I felt that "I'm going to die now" in 2017 earthquake in Mexico. I couldnt sleep after that, thinking all the time apartment will go down on me... Finally I moved to a small house outside of Mexico City. Much luck, sorry you have to go through this... Much love from Mexico mate!
Same. Had a similar earthquake in Trinidad and Tobago 2 years ago. Thought it was like the usual, but it wasn't stopping and was getting progressively more violent the longer it went on. I wouldn't wish for anyone to experience anything like this.

As someone who's lived through several hurricanes and salvaged a household or two, I'm glad you're all right. And...it's only stuff.
I remember being in the 2011 earthquake back when I was stationed in Japan. Luckily I was farther down the island in Tokyo, but I still remember the intense rocking of the ground and things falling over in the house. When I heard the news, I couldn't help but think of my friends still living there.

This is so heartbreaking in so many ways, but I'm so happy that you, Sharla, Natsuki and the rest of the crew (and friends) are all okay. It's terrifying to see such destruction and don't ever be ashamed at being on edge after something so incredibly traumatic. That's just a natural reaction to something like this.

Absolutely terrifying to see, I cannot imagine experiencing that in real time. I felt and heard a small quake on Vancouver island once it was so scary. Hope everyone is ok.
The difference being not only that it's smaller, but any earthquake on Vancouver Island is only a few seconds. This was three and a half minutes.
@@juliansmith4295 so terrifying, I can’t fathom it. Yes the one I experienced was only 7 seconds. Practically nothing compared to this one. I just remember how loud it was and how vulnerable I felt. Prayers to them all.

This is a good reality check. That was also the first time I ever felt terror from an earthquake. And I was alive during the Northridge earthquake in California.
To everyone that says "I'm not scared of anything" I always tell them to try and not be scared during a massive earthquake. It's a terrifying experience.
An Earthquake is one of the most terryfing things for your brain. Absolute hopelesness. There are two main factors which define the level of fear your brain produces.
Information about the Danger and your evaluation of the possbile solutions.
You have no idea how severe the earthquake is, you have no idea how secure the building is, you do not know how long it will go and basically your life is in danger, not a toe, not your leg, your life, building crushes you die.
Then there is the fact that you cannot run from an earthquake, you cannot hide from an earthquake, you cant shoot it dead, you basically are delivered and at the mercy of the fate.
0 information about the danger with your life at stake and 0 solutions to overcome the dangers equals to maximum fear output from your brain. Many go unconcious becasue brain thinks you will die and it can as well happen when you dont feel anyhting.
trust me it is terrible you will most likely panic or do something stupid.
As someone who lived my entire life in a seismically active region you never get used to the feeling of having your building shake

as someone that has lived through 2 large earthquakes only a year apart each that took out a large part of my city, i know what its like. you will be on edge for a bit but the feeling will pass and all will be good. glad that you are safe
