NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Natsuki and Ryotaro united at last! What more could you want from a video? For the next few weeks Abroad in Japan videos are going old school; which basically means it's just me in a room eating cup noodles. But do any of you share my childhood fear? And do you want to see Natsuki quit smoking?! Let me know in the comments. And don't forget to check out the new Abroad in Japan website and steal some soundbites from the soundboard! Enjoy! (www.abroadinjapan.com/) Stay safe guys
I used to smoke for 17 years, and I was addicted to it. That breakfast that Natsuki enjoys is called a "Fisherman's Breakfast", and it is every smoker's breakfast. Smoking suppresses hunger, so it would obviously replace actual food for breakfast. I also used to smoke as much as Natsuki, roughly. But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I just woke up one day and said that I'm done smoking. However, you can't force a person to quit, because they will get pissed off, and they will resist quitting more. I certainly did. It is tough, man, but it's a decision that needs to be made by Natsuki. A couple of things that helped me: - Don't drink coffee or alcohol for about a month (both lead to temptation of smoking) - Replace smoking with another activity (I replaced smoking with exercise) - Keep your hands busy. Half of the anxiety that comes with quitting is that you need something to do with your hands. - Don't make a big deal out of quitting (the more you focus on it, the more you crave). I had actually forgotten how long ago I had quit, but apparently I'm on my 8th month. Woohoo! - Never say "I'll just have one". We all know what that means with booze, so it's obviously the same with smoking. One is never just one. - And, lastly, avoid social gatherings for a while. They generally tempt you into smoking, as well. Natsuki, if you want to quit, these are some things that helped me overcome an addiction that I thought I never would. I know that you can beat it, bud :) (if you want to, of course)
damn thanks for taking your time writing those out and I'm happy to hear your progress of not smoking! One question though, have you try or heard the chewing gums trick? I heard it also helps you since you keeping your mouth busy from smoking. Hopefully Natsuki can gradually lives a healthier life so I'm looking forward as well for the documentary if he ever going to make one.
@@KryKaizen It's my pleasure :) and thanks! Gum works for some people, but I just ate some snacks, instead. Partnered with exercise, the food did my body good, considering that I was burning a lot of energy. I completely agree! Unfortunately, smoking is an addiction. The amount of times I said "I know that smoking is bad, but I just enjoy it so much". It sucks letting something have that much power over you. Natsuki will make the decision for himself, and he'll have good friends to support him. I hope they're prepared for cranky Natsuki, though. It's unavoidable.
Also remembering that the craving goes away if you resist for like 5 minutes. That's what did it for me. It's in my mind, I resist and then it's gone for an hour. Repeat and it goes away for a longer time.
For all those who want to be non-smokers.... I always recommend “Easy Way to Stop Smoking” by Allen Carr. It’s been translated into about 26 languages, I don’t know if Japanese is included. The English audiobook is amazing. I did try to read it once, but I found the material stuck better with audio. It’s only a 6 hour listen. I sometimes go back and listen to specific chapters if I need too. It’s a powerful book, and seriously.... I cannot recommend it enough.

It might be that he never had any true struggles in his life, and I think Chris wants to focus on more gritty issues. But I also think Ryotaro movie would be funny as hell.
I've been terrified of ET since a young child also. It was made even worse when I was made go on the ET ride in Florida universal studios 4 years ago. I had a full blown panic attack and remain traumatized. You are not alone Chris. God help us.
I watched Nightmare on Elm Street as a kid,and thought it was scary-funny.I saw ET and that was NOT FUNNY,legitimately scary, didn't even watched whole thing, and i was couple years older!
I love how, in spite of Yamamoto-san clearly working through a tenuous grasp of the English language, he still managed to get "it's" and "you're" correct. He is officially a better English writer than 90% of the people in my social circle.
Still don't understand how native speakers always meas this up. It's so easy and it's weird to see it get messed up all the time as a "non native english speaker".
This kind of mistake is much easier to make for native speakers, because they first learn how to speak and only several years later they learn how to write, essentially as a process of coding the speech into graphical symbols. So it's easy to mix up things that sound the same, even if their meanings are obviously different. Non-native speakers usually learn writing along with speaking and their minds associate foreign words with the words in their native languages, where they probably sound very different, and thus the risk for confusion is minimized. It happens in other languages as well. My native language is Portuguese and we pronounce the words for "plus" and "but" ("mais" and "mas") in the same way, so a lot of people keep mixing those two up when writing. Obviously, for someone whose native language is English, it is impossible to accidentally swap "plus" for "but", so if you think of a sentence in English and translate it word for word to Portuguese in your mind, you won't be making this mistake that a lot of proficient Portuguese speakers make.
@Cameron I'm sorry but even for "quickly typing" it's not that hard to know the difference. I understand messing up a lot of words but your and you're must be the easiest grammar of the english language.
I lived in Shibuya for about three years and totally fell in love with Japan and the Japanese people. I’ve enjoyed binge-watching your witty and entertaining videos, which bring back great memories. Thanks and hope you’re doing well.
Hey no one said the functionality Chris has was good functionality. He could be sharpening his bad functionality. Lol or maybe we should focus on the "HIGH" part..and not "functionality"
I haven't watched Natsuki: The Movie, but seeing his face in the clip you showed of him talking about his breakfast of coffee and cigarettes, he did not look happy about it, and I honestly felt sadness for him. I think if you did your documentary and it helped him with his addiction, it could be the greatest thing anyone could do for a friend. So I vote DO IT!
I wanna throw this out there as somebody who chainsmoked and had even other worse addictions - maybe start with Nautsuki cutting down gradually. It's simple, but less traumatic.
This might be the perfect opportunity for him to learn. One day, he'll get so bored and so out of cup noodles and fried chicken (the fried chicken shop will be closed by then), that he just might start cooking. I'm rooting for you, Chris! :D
Everyone has their talents. Two siblings of mine can’t really work their way around a kitchen. However they have patience and understanding in areas I do not.
You are not alone. I was terrified of the dark up until midway through high-school, all because I watched et as a young child. I had frequent nightmares about it for years, it made it hard to get a good night of sleep in.
"I don't think anybody could ever bring themselves to kill Natsuki" I would love to see Risottoro's reaction to such lovely comment from such a good friend.
Can relate on the ET. I was gifted an ET doll as a child one Christmas with a voice box that played his famous quotes from the movie. Complete with red cape and everything. The voice box would just never die, there was no visible off button either if I remember, or battery bit. I developed such a fear of this doll that my parents put it in the cupboard where it would wake me up a few times with a muffled ‘eeee....teeeee phone home’. I don’t know where it went - I was six at the time but I hope it stays away..
🤣🤣🤣 Never crossed my mind but that's actually what would happen! and omg Chris put those soundbites up on a site! Imma downloading Like a Magic right about now!
"Bucket of dried sodium" is likely the most accurate thing I've ever heard. Nothing like a flavour-style sachet of monosodium glutamate to boost morale.
I'd like to see two new segments: 1. Chris saves Natsuki from lung cancer: Journey across addiction. 2. Jun saves Chris from high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke: Journey across learning a basic skill everyone should know.
I've been watching you for a while now, and your humor has me absolutely hooked on your channel. There's just something about how you deliver literally every joke or sort of sarcasm you present in your videos. 100% funny.
I bought a nylon arm warmer from Dondonki in shibuya that said "If you stay clam, life get more better.". I guess my life didn't get better because I wasn't a clam.
I'm feeling pretty clammy in the Florida heat and humidity, and I certainly don't think it's made my live any better. Better than dealing with snow I guess, but it would be nice to have dry clothes.
Should atleast get him to swap over to vape. No reason to keep sucking on cancer sticks current year that coats everything in tar --someone who quit smoking for 10yrs after 8 yrs of addiction. Not to mention the major health detriments
I'm so sad that my country doesn't have fried chicken basically anywhere... No KFC or similar, nothing in stores, there are nuggets but they suck. I found fried chicken in a quite fancy restaurant, it was so good. I wish I had more fried chicken... and fried chicken onigiris...
When you started talking about the children’s character that used to scare you I immediately thought “ET, please say ET” and then you did and I lost it. I was terrified of ET as a child. I used to lie in bed afraid that his head would appear from around the door frame. I don’t know what I was afraid of him doing, but goddamn he was terrifying. And I truly never understood why none of my friends were terrified of him too.
It's only now, 12 years into adulthood, that I have seen someone else agreeing with me that ET is fucking terrifying. The stuff of my childhood nightmares.
same here xD even to this day i can't watch this movie. and then i sit there watch the thing or alien and I'm like... you're cute xD i don't know what's wrong with me
4:16 - 5:06 is the best piece of UA-cam I've ever seen. Thank you for providing this to me, this has completed my life. I have now subscribed to you and will forever be indebted to your comedic genius.
Chris! The documentary about Natsuki's addiction to cigarettes would be awesome, PLEASE DO IT!!! I was a smoker myself and I had a hard time quitting cigarettes... I tried patches, nicotine gum, lozenges etc. One interesting way that I find helped me quite a bit psychologically was to tell myself that I would smoke again (kinda like I will meet you again old friend), but that day would be far far away. With the exception of a few cravings here and there, I think that I overcame the hardest part. I haven't smoked a dart in over 3 months now! (I was a one-pack-a-day smoker for 6 years, and a smoker for 10).
Couldn't agree more about E.T. I always found him scary and creepy. The part where Elliot is wandering around the field at night with a flashlight and suddenly shines it on a frightened, screaming E.T.'s face was one of the most chilling moments of my childhood. And the way you can see his glowing heart thumping in his chest like the ghost bride from the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland? That's supposed to be cute? **Shudder**
natsuki the movie part 2 would be amazing to watch!! i’d be very interested in seeing his addiction recovery journey- or to know why he started in the first place! :)
@@AbroadinJapan Though I'm sure you chaps are already aware, I often have to remind myself not to confine outcomes to do or die. Sometimes a sideways step (vaping) is the only available move and potentially better than not moving at all.

Just discovered your channel! You're a journalist, comedian and storyteller all in one. The videos are amazing..... insightful and amusing. I don't see myself ever visiting Japan, but you make an endearing case for it. Thanks again for your time. P.S Is Godzilla/giant monster attack insurance a real thing over there? I read somewhere it is. Just curious.
As someone who lost their mother a almost 2 months ago to lung cancer from being a smoker of 47 years, if we it could get Natsuki to quit smoking, that would be wondrous.
As someone that started smoking from 12 to 27 years old and has quit for over a year now I can tell you that him quitting successfully will have nothing to do with us. It will be up to him. I don't mean to sound contrary though I do agree and I hope for everyone to be able to quit smoking as soon as they can. I'm sorry for your loss, I hope you can find it in yourself to have a nice day and are able to spend time with someone you care about.
I don't want to speak for Natsuki, but I don't think he really is interested in stopping to smoke. I think he doesn't care about death, nor life. He often seems to be trapped, with no real goal in life. It's not like he can't enjoy things, but he takes life as it comes, I doubt he really has sth like a bucket list. So I just wish him to find his place in life, to be happy, and if that is reached, healthy without smoking, to make that life enjoyable as long as possible.
I started watching this channel before covid, forgot about it and today it came back up. I’m happy that you are healthy and doing well. Super excited to go back to your content and after over a year of being indoors to reinvigorate my desire to one day travel to japan. Thank you for all the insightful info and entertaining content 👍🏼💯.
You're not alone. My eldest son was terrified of ET growing up. He's now 21 and I still send him random pics of ET because it's hilarious. He now lives on the West coast of Australia, pretty much as far away from home as you can get while remaining in the same country. I miss him.
Hi Chris! Referring to the toilets down in the floor (14:10)... The tour guide of the sightseeing trip I took recently explained that these are for people who are wearing kimonos. Especially, the ladies' kimonos are hard to lift or she wouldn't like to crease it, so she would pee standing up. Not squatting, standing. Something similar refers to gentlemen in kimonos. I would be grateful if you could investigate this further ;) By the way, I had watched a lot of your films before that trip. Thanks to them, my experiences were more interesting and deeper than my friends'; many things I already knew so could concentrate on others. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
When you said a character scared you as a child, I instantly thought of E.T and then was massively spooked when he appeared on screen XD Likewise I'm over it now but there is something... unnerving about him.
Chris: **Eats cup noodles throughout the video. Get's asked questions about his consumption of cup noodles. Reveals that he'll be going from one cup noodle meal to another.** Also Chris: "Let's address Natsuki's smoking addiction." Also, just had a look. I have always been unsettled when it came to the sick E.T. scene and I still can't really watch it. So thank you for that jumpscare, but at least you are not alone.
At the age of 22 I'm still extremely freaked out by E.T. He looks terrifying and his scream is even worse. So, thanks Chris... for making me remember all of my childhood trauma
Can 100% relate to this. It was bad an experience for me our family banned the movie. Which was great since it was on TV every Thanksgiving (USA) holiday and my family still chooses to mock me for this 😰
Ah, but that part was supposed to be horrifying! For me I will give thanks to ET for teaching me the insult "penis breath" at an exceedingly young age for use against my older brothers.
It was that horrifying squeal it did that messed me up. My sister was given a stuffed ET cuddly toy and she used to torment me with it. I'm probably gonna have a nightmare tonight!
For Natsuki's smoking addiction: Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking" - I haven't tasted tobacco for nearly two years now and I got my sister and a couple of friends to read it, they also quit. Haven't felt the need to smoke, not even for a second. It explains how tobacco addiction works on a psychological level, and it becomes pretty easy to break the habit from there. It also has an introduction for people who bought it for someone they care about, to have them try and quit, it would have some advice on what You can do to help. Best of luck ;)
Thanks for this book reco. I've been smoking for five years, and been meaning to quit. I smoke more than half a pack a day. I always openly say I should quit but I don't have the discipline it takes to quit. I gotta say though, the most annoying thing about smoking is the fucking cost of it. It burns like napalm through your pocket. I just calculated very roughly how much I spent on my smoking habit throughout the years, and it was around 1500 usd, which is A LOT where I'm from... I can't believe I could've sent a kid through school just from my smoking habit, it really adds up.
I stopped smoking for all most a year my gums and teeth hurts for all most a month but I made it through by replacing cigarettes with ginger tea hahaha
@@karu6111 do me a favour please read this book while smoking and follow all his instructions like you follow your religion And you will find how easy is to quit smoking I was a chain smoker/addicted For past 10 years And now six months and i haven't touched any tobacco product Please read this book

You are not alone...I was terrified of ET when I was a child. That scream of his is the stuff of nightmares.
Keep up the great content!
I never really thought Chris didn't know how to cook, I've always seen him as a high functionality person
Well, highly functional doesn't always suggest completely functional :P
"I feel he has no story to tell"
@@turinmormegil7715 I also thought that was kind of a weird, rude-ish choice of words ^^
@@Serjo777 I'm sure they're close enough to say these kinds of stuff
@@xLeidenFrost Are you even aware what quote I'm referring to?
Can relate on the ET. I was gifted an ET doll as a child one Christmas with a voice box that played his famous quotes from the movie. Complete with red cape and everything. The voice box would just never die, there was no visible off button either if I remember, or battery bit. I developed such a fear of this doll that my parents put it in the cupboard where it would wake me up a few times with a muffled ‘eeee....teeeee phone home’. I don’t know where it went - I was six at the time but I hope it stays away..
I hope it's melting in the depths of hell where it belongs.

ET scared the crap out of me when I was a child as well. You're not alone.
"Bucket of dried sodium" is likely the most accurate thing I've ever heard. Nothing like a flavour-style sachet of monosodium glutamate to boost morale.
Ryotaro and natsuki fighting is like two series you wouldn't think would ever collaborate
Yes! finally someone gets me! I was afraid of e.t. when I was a child and nobody else understood why lol.
I'd like to see two new segments:
1. Chris saves Natsuki from lung cancer: Journey across addiction.
2. Jun saves Chris from high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke: Journey across learning a basic skill everyone should know.
Jun? Rachel's husband?
@@madhavpatil1206 the one and the same. He has a channel called Jun's kitchen. If anyone can help this man, it's Jun.

I love how he said that Q&A vids don't do well and this one did insanely well.

I'm feeling pretty clammy in the Florida heat and humidity, and I certainly don't think it's made my live any better. Better than dealing with snow I guess, but it would be nice to have dry clothes.
Yessss we passed 30K, already looking forward to #AskAbroad in May!
Also: SO DOWN for the Natsuki documentary!!!
I also found E.T. incredibly terrifying as a child and had forgotten about it until this video. Thanks for bringing up repressed fears about E.T.
No, you are not alone! My brother ran out of the cinema as he watched E.T. because he was terrified
I would love to see a movie on Natsuki's struggle with smoking, especially if there's some real educational value.
Should atleast get him to swap over to vape. No reason to keep sucking on cancer sticks current year that coats everything in tar --someone who quit smoking for 10yrs after 8 yrs of addiction. Not to mention the major health detriments
ET is the creepiest most disgusting thing I ever had the misfortune to see. Terrifying. You're not alone Chris
I concur. I always thought it was just me.
One of the essentials of a Japanese quarantine: FamilyMart fried chicken
can confirm: it helps numb the pain.
That is so relatable
I'm so glad I'm not in quarantine in Japan, I'd probably double my weight in 2 months...
I'm so sad that my country doesn't have fried chicken basically anywhere... No KFC or similar, nothing in stores, there are nuggets but they suck. I found fried chicken in a quite fancy restaurant, it was so good. I wish I had more fried chicken... and fried chicken onigiris...

Make the movie, Chris! Natsuki: Marlboro-man! In all seriousness, thanks for your channel and it’s content. Always uplifting and entertaining.
Same here!
I mean.... He has big eyes. Big eyes are cute right? 😂
I don't know why I don't find him terrifying either.
It's only now, 12 years into adulthood, that I have seen someone else agreeing with me that ET is fucking terrifying. The stuff of my childhood nightmares.
same here xD even to this day i can't watch this movie. and then i sit there watch the thing or alien and I'm like... you're cute xD i don't know what's wrong with me
ET and Alf. I hated Alf. He was more terrifying for me than ET.

**Shudder**
I'm absolutely dying reading all of the E.T comments 😂😂😂
Nah
My favourite japan-english phrase I found on a case is "Feelings Conveyed." It's great. Feelings conveyed.
natsuki the movie part 2 would be amazing to watch!! i’d be very interested in seeing his addiction recovery journey- or to know why he started in the first place! :)
It's certainly worth a shot if we can get him to quit!
@@AbroadinJapan Though I'm sure you chaps are already aware, I often have to remind myself not to confine outcomes to do or die. Sometimes a sideways step (vaping) is the only available move and potentially better than not moving at all.

You are the most consistent
"No one could ever bring himself to kill Natsuki"
Agreed. He's like a big brother we all need.
Natsuki's too much of a cinnamon roll to ever win in a duel versus Ryotaro, who we all know is still planning Chris's untimely demise as we all speak.
I just noticed this, but E.T.'s head looks like an earbud. Now that is scary.
Just discovered your channel! You're a journalist, comedian and storyteller all in one. The videos are amazing..... insightful and amusing. I don't see myself ever visiting Japan, but you make an endearing case for it. Thanks again for your time.

You reminded me more of Terry Jones, and I found it endearing to think Terry moved to Japan.
I still contend that he's saying "Just is delicious". Describe it in one word,,, that one word is 'delicious'. It JUST IS DELICIOUS.

Are we sure he did not mean to say "Just is delicious" instead of "justice delicious"? The latter one sounds more fun though xD

I would be grateful if you could investigate this further ;)
By the way, I had watched a lot of your films before that trip. Thanks to them, my experiences were more interesting and deeper than my friends'; many things I already knew so could concentrate on others. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
When you said a character scared you as a child, I instantly thought of E.T and then was massively spooked when he appeared on screen XD

At the age of 22 I'm still extremely freaked out by E.T. He looks terrifying and his scream is even worse.
So, thanks Chris... for making me remember all of my childhood trauma
ET was definitely horrifying. Especially the scene at the end when he was all sick and white. Scarred me as a child! Did not like the movie.
