- Japan's traditional inns (Ryokans) are one of the top things to do in Japan. During a recent Wacky Weekend with @CDawgVA, we spent the night at a stunning hot spring called Yudanaka in Nagano, where we shot this episode. Enjoy!

Idk why but Connor sniffing the tea and knowing what kind of tea it was BY SMELL is the most British thing I've ever seen.
Barley tea! I've never ever even tried one, and he knows it by scent.
That's because barley tea is common in Japan and is sold everywhere in combinis and vending machines. And it smells like, well, barley.
@@thorbergson I've never had barley tea but I'd be able to recognize it also, barley has a very distinct smell. You can totally tell the difference when a barley loaf of bread is being baked vs one made from wheat.
That is just the average British person we can get better
At this point I doubt a honeymoon in Japan would be worth it for Chris since he's going pretty much everywhere with Connor.

A tip for Connor on the doors not sliding: They sell a special tape in all hardware stores, which you can just stick under the door which will make it slide like a dream.
Good tip...You can also take a small piece of candle and rub it on the tracks if it's like a sliding glass door
Oh my gosh thank you! I know that you can do other things but with cats, I don’t want wax or whatnot getting gummed up. I’ll have to try this
ANOTHER TIP, (for anyone building a house) top hung sliding doors and windows are ALWAYS much lighter and easier to slide
When I lived in Japan, I bought some wax from a 100 yes store. It was for a sticky drawer. It worked a treat!

Most ryokan feature private hot spring baths. It's a pretty typical reason to go to ryokan.

I enjoy these types of videos the most. I know they’re not Chris’ favorite, but just wandering around an area, showing off the amenities with Connor or Natsuki goofing off in the background is great. Doesn’t need edited in narration, exposition or exploding jets, just Chris laughing at a monke in water that’s too hot. 👍

Before I found Chris' channel, it never occured to me to support a youtuber on patreon. But after binge watching all of his vids, and still wanting more, a few bucks a month seemed more than fair for the BTS videos, monthly live chats, and helping to support future videos.

Hotel coffee beans - always double to triple the scoop. I don't know why, even in USA, coffee grounds are duller in the hotel industry. Could be older beans, who knows. Thanks for the awesome video.
Beans are fresh only for 2 weeks max depending on the packaging, humidity, ect... Not surprised they taste dull as you can't control how are handle these beans anyway in an hotel room 😅.

I've actually stayed in Yudanaka back in February 2019 at Uotoshi Ryokan. They have a lot of samurai memorabilia in their entrance lobby and a kyudojo attached to the ryokan where visitors can have a go at trying out Kyudo. Just try to not hit any of the koi fish in the pond between you and the target.

When I was younger I always wanted to visit Japan because of all the neon crazy stuff.
As an adult I want to visit it due to your channels making me realise just how stunning a country it is.
Because of Covid, airline strikes, and my “friends” being very uncertain about joining me, going to japan next year is going to be tough. But the good news is that every-time you upload, I find a new place to add to the itinerary. I absolutely love you and your content Chris. This Onsen has 100% made it’s way on my future trip to do list!
For reference, the onsen they visited is not part of the 9 public onsens from what I can tell, but is part of Shibu Onsen Kokuyama, a Ryokan directly adjacent to onsen 9.
There's a reason table tennis is often seen in smaller places. It's a moderately strenuous experience for not that much space taken up. Plus the pace of the game is quick so even 4 people can enjoy themselves without getting too bored.

When I watched the wacky weekend video and saw the few seconds of footage of the ryokan in Yudanaka I thought it looked like the place my wife and I stayed at on our first trip to Japan together (actually when I proposed to her!). I was really hanging out for this video to come out so I could double check, and now I'm 99% sure it's the same place. Shibu Onsen Kokuya?
We saw the snow monkeys and stayed in Yudanaka, at a 400 year old onsen, with very similar private baths in the room, and a public bath called Issa that looked just like that, and I have a couple of photos of me wearing the exact same yukata that Connor is wearing. It's not totally conclusive, but it's pretty bloody close!
Apparently we stayed there 10 years ago (which is genuinely shocking, how has it been that long) but it was definitely one of the best experiences I've had in Japan, and probably anywhere for that matter, even though we went in the middle of summer and it was stinking hot. The baths were beautiful, and the food was great. It was a little bit tricky, because no one at the inn spoke any English, and while my wife had lived in Japan for a few years her Japanese was far from fluent, so we kind of muddled along with a few mix ups, but all in all brilliant. They even arranged for us to go on a bus tour further up into the mountains to see fireflies, which coming from Australia I'd never seen before, and it was honestly magical. Then they sent us on our way with a little package of onigiri and some beautiful fans.
All in all an incredible stay, and an incredible coincidence that it seems like you guys stayed there too. Couldn't recommend it enough if people get the chance, and it seems even better in winter.

Same here as well, from Australia, proposed to my wife in a ryokan in Yudanaka called jinpyokaku, which was fairly close to the snow monkey entrance. Magical and wonderful place especially during winter. Thanks for founding out the name of this Onsen as well.

I've stayed in that ryokan before!! (albeit not staying in the room with the magic private onsen LOL) - still, has to admit I really love that ryokan, the staffs are really nice too, 15/10 will visit again if I got the chance!
