A great start! I think the only thing I'd suggest is an easier way for them to get out of the cage ( maybe some boxes turned into steps?) and maybe a large rug or some oversized pee pads ( a potential project if you feel up to it!) to protect the floor. The cat tree looks like it might become a popular spot to hang out in over time. If not, it'll provide your rats with some space to climb over and explore. You could even put a little bowl of treats in one of the holes to encourage it further! I look forward to seeing what else you do with their new play area. :D

I know you get a lot of boxes from your packages. You could easily cut a few wholes in them to add to the playpen for them to hide and climb on. It's practically free and it's okay if they destroy them. I do this for my mice's playpen.

@@AlyssaNPets I’ve used cardboard and cut it and scored it in the same manner as you would for your piggy coroplex. And then used contact paper to make it pee proof. (Like the kind you used on your old kitchen cupboards). Super easy and budget friendly since it looks like you’ve already got the supplies! 😃

Thank you for doing things on their own terms and not forcing them to free roam when they don’t want to. I have a chinchilla and you’re supposed to free roam them for 3-4 hours a day and she hates it. The most we can get is an hour before she’s done and wants back inside her cage. I’ve tried hundreds of dollars worth of toys and enrichment during free roam and she just doesn’t like it. People forget that animals all have different personalities just like people do. Some small animals love their free roam time and some don’t.
Ye true I have three rabbits a bonded pair and a single rabbit and they have a half of a room to free roam in as my single rabbit lives in the other half and the room across the hall from it is the room where my bonded pair live they love to come out and Binky and run around like crazy but my other doesn’t really come out she’s fine I took her to the vets but she’s just a lazy bun and Loves her enclosure when she does come out she hops around for a few mins and then finds a place to pee and then find another spot far away from the pee and takes a nap and then goes back in a go in her litter box she so funny she has a whole routine of going into the play area 😂
Same but with my ferrets they have their own room and there cage and there in their cage at night and when no one is home but other than that there cage door is open for them to go in and out they love being In there cage that’s there safe place and there place where if they don’t want to be played with or anything they can stay and relax animals have there own feelings and I wish everyone would understand
As long as they have the opportunity to free roam for the recommend time that's great. My budgies have a whole room to free roam all day but one of the budgies rarely comes out for more then 15 minutes lol she likes her cage more

I don't have rats but what about putting a ladder that leads from the cage to the floor? Maybe they are more brave to come down if they think they have a very easy and fast "escape route" they could take if a "danger" approaches? I don't know if rats are also as flighty as other small pets, but you could give it a try. Also: Get well soon!

It looks so good! Your rats are so spoiled! I do have a few ideas of cute things you could add! You could add a wooden ladder to the cage so that can get out easier and to just give them another option to climb, you could put some of the cardboard palaces that you gave to the bunny, you could give them another dig box but with natural substrate like dirt to give them another texture, you could also probably add some small dog or cat beds or something like the beds and things you use for the pigs, and you could add some cute hides so they could have the option to hide while they are our.
The rat community is very toxic at times, so don’t feel any pressure to post! I love their room & all the enrichment they have!

@@ruthiereallife6404 not the whole rat community! but she mentioned that she doesn’t like posting the rats because the rat community can be toxic. which i do agree with, just out of all the animals groups i’m in the rat one can be the most toxic. of course not everyone is!! :) i’m not sure what she has personally gone through or heard, i know i’ve had a lot of people in my groups mad when i was looking for homes for babies from a rescue moms litter & say really harsh things. but again varies by group & person. hope that helped!

@@haleyslife2005 I’m not apart of the ferret community, but I’m sure! I’ve noticed so many animal/pet groups are toxic. When I got my puppy I had a lady tell me I need to stay home with him 24/7 until he’s a year. But I was still in school at the time, so I explained it & she lost her mind. I’m in the rat, hamster, rabbit, cat, & puppy facebook groups/community & honestly the only one I sort of like is the cat facebook groups because so many people have been helpful!

I appreciate you sharing multi pet husbandry. I used to have rats as a kid they are very fun. I like them because 95% of any pet store or even kid store they can play with something from any department
Aaaaaaw that was so sweet to see them exploring for the first time. Rats are very timid little animals, but exstremely curious and adventurous. I'm sure once they know they are safe, that they will want to come out and have fun much more. Maybe as they are nocturnal by nature the evenings will be their favoured time to play.

I used c & c grids all the time and have made so many different enclosures for my guinea pigs and birds.
I have a suggestion for your rat run. If you were to build it like a box with walls on all for sides, a roof and a floor. You can actually turn it into a rat room within your art room. You can make the door hinged so that the door is 2 panels wide and opens from the middle. With 1 set of 3 panels on side and 1 set of 3 panels the other side. You can place a connector on the bottom to join the middle sections to keep the door closed. Or you could use some type of clip that is easy to open. I suggest cable tying all the joints on all four corners of each panel. This makes a real room with solid walls. You could put some wire mesh panels in for ventilation to make some windows. This way they could have access to their run as often as they like and they would always be separate from your other animals. You wouldn't need to supervise them so much.
Another sugestion would be to make the whole enclosure from closed wire mesh panels so as over time they may discover they like to chew the plastic ones and escape 🙄. Well up to you if you choose my ideas or not. They are your pets and i will enjoy watching whatever you do or don't do. Hope i could help you think about some ideas. Lv Judi 😘😘😘😘
I hope you’re starting to feel better from covid❤️ It seems like your rats are quite shy of nature, and you’ve done a lot to try to get them to warm up so it’s not your fault. I would be a bit suspicious of how their breeder socialised them to be honest, as someone who’s gotten very well socialised rats from my breeder. Just a thought though I have no idea! I’d add more stuff in the free roam area for them to feel safe, shy rats find big open spaces quite scary. Personally I’d add some plastic houses, maybe cardboard boxes made into houses as a cheaper option. Fleece blankets around the space in piles are also nice, works as tunnels and hides, and just fills up space! just fill it with stuff honestly. If you have IKEA near you they have a wine rack that’s really nice for rats to climb on. I think it would be a good idea to use a ladder for them to get in and out of the cage as well, would probably feel safer for them to leave the cage if they could get in and out quickly. You’re doing amazing as a rat owner honestly, and if your rats were more confident you’d have no issue. Just thought I’d share some tips, as someone’s who’s had shy rats before myself😊
I use the Little Green Clean Machine to thoroughly clean the cat tree for my squirrel. It looks so clean afterward as if it's new out of the box, and it sucks it nearly dry at the end. Takes about an hour to be bone dry. I should add, I spray it with a natural enzyme cleaner, scrub it in and wait 5-minutes, then just use warm water in the machine - no soap.
I own 5 piggies and plan to eventually own some rats too. I love seeing your content on both of them. So sorry you’ve gotten so much hate for simply loving on those fur balls. I hear the rat community is toxic but I never realized how bad they can be :/ Stay motivated queen ✨ haters are going to hate no matter what. Just do what makes you happy and keeps your mind in a positive space.
I know ferret owners use ball pits so maybe it would work with rats? Especially since your rats are sensitive to loose substrate.

I rescued a female guinea pig yesterday, she was living in a rabbit cage with pin bedding, her poo was bright red I took her to the vet it's where she never seen hay a day of her life, the women also informed me she hardly ever gave her water 💧 cause she didn't think guinea pigs drink that much, I since now have her in a huge c and c enclosure fleece bedding lots of little hides and beds for her, she is so cute, hoping after 3 weeks in quarantine we find her a friend. She never been with another guinea pig and she's 2 years old. I love my pets and your videos teach me something new every time I watch them.

Love it! I free roam my 7 girls in my room so I can keep an eye on them plus it’s the only place I can do so I have the same barrier as you but one of the panels is the same height as Two or yours. What you can try to make the wall more sturdy for my play pen I use Velcro strips so instead of curving in your panel and holding it against the wall with weights you can just have the panel go straight across and use the Velcro to hold it in place and the rats can’t push it open it works amazing with mines ☺️ Also from Home Depot I don’t know the exact name it used to attach to your rain gutter to drain the water further away from your house i use it for a tunnel for my rats during free roam it’s 15ft long for under $10. I know for myself and as well as other rat parents would love to see when they get new toys I have seen the little frog sink it’s so cute I may get my rats one for when it’s summer time.
