oh my lordy! i finally get the turnaround thing!!!! it makes it so you dont have to stop and start something else. Sorta just leads ya there so you can continue making music!! Boy am I jazzed now. Thank you so much Lauren, I often thin youre born to play guitar but more often I think youre born to teach it.
By far my favorite guitar channel. You do a great job explaining/teaching each lesson. It was difficult to understand some other tutorials, but every video of yours I have watched has been excellent. Thank you so much!
A good friend of mine loves Chicago Blues. He just tells me 1-4-5, the key, and whether there's a turnaround. Then I can play along without knowing anything else about the song. Can jam for hours doing just that. It's amazing how many songs can be played using the same shape!
Hey eating some carry out Thaifood was checking some UA-cam yours popped up decided to take a brief lesson while wolfing down some food. Good job. As always. Very inspiring,as a little boy second oldest brother would play this, About 1966 never learned myself other than maybe once. Thanks for your inspiration gonna do it. PS love Antiques and old cars. There is something about the way they made them, to last maybe? As well as driving an old car or truck. Especially when you step on the pedal and hear and feel the engine😳😊👍 stay well have a beautiful day. Jim
Good lessons Lauren - love the way you explain things and show how to do it slowly first with close up on guitar - makes it so easy to follow your teaching - thank you
Somehow I seemed to have missed this lesson . Anyhow better late than never , it was a good one! I think something has finally just clicked in my old brain about 12 bar blues and turn arounds ! Thank you Laura.
Great lesson and explanation! I get the turn around, wish you had also shown how to easily walk out (end) the progression so it sounded complete rather than just a fingering lesson.
Great lesson, Lauren! It's a Must for every blues beginner. Learning the notes on the fretboard is not that difficult as it seems. 1-4-5 Chord progression, turnaround.... that's the basics. And perfectly teached. Take care!! 🎸👍
Awesome exercise for fun and for working of finger dexterity that always pays off in other areas. Going to add this to my daily practice session =) thanks!
Maybe think about using a guitar with fret markers if you're making a beginner video lesson! Will be much easier to locate positions for beginning players.
Thanks for the great less Lauren. I love the blues. Please consider doing more blues lessons. It would be cool if you could play to a backing track at the end so we have a sample of how it sounds all put together.

Hi Lauren great lesson, so clear and precis love listening to you, that's the trouble must practice more oop's still so many videos you have shown wow your good love em to bits, and you too he he Best wishes Ken xxx
This is awesome! I'm definitely going to try this out because I've been struggling a bit with the 12 barre blues. This will make it much easier. Btw.... Isn't this method what they call the caged method?
Great lesson, Lauren. But something confuses me about it technically with the 4 notes you play in each bar. These are 1)the root, 2)the root an octave higher, 3)the note between the 6th and 7th notes in the scale, and finally 4) the 5th. Now, it makes sense to me that the root notes and the 5th sound good together, but why does that note between the 6th and 7th notes of the scale work from a music theory point of view? Wouldn't things NORMALLY stick to the notes in the scale? Or am I being too much a pedantic slave to the scale?
Hi Pete, great question. Honestly, I don't know the exact theory behind why it works. In general, any tone or note could be made to work when playing lead guitar. Depends on how you play it. Scales are great to learn, but it's cool and fun to play outside then as well
@@LaurenBateman Thanks for the reply. I've been thinking about this off and on and maybe I have an answer to my own question. My theory is that in blues, 7 chords (B7, E7, A7 etc) are often used. As we know, these are just chords with a flatted 7th added in. So, maybe using the flatted 7th (the note between the 7th and the 6th) in these bluesy scenarios (and no doubt others) works.
Good morning Lauren. I’m watching your lesson at the same time that I’m making my coffee and getting a quick bite before going out to my volunteer work. What I love about your lessons is that even if I feel they are a bit beyond me, you communicate the constant drumbeat of, “You can do this!” So even if I’m not fully following all of the details, before your lesson is halfway through you have given me the feeling that if I just pay attention, sit down and focus…Yes! I can do this! Thank you so much for your delightful and encouraging lessons. Have a great day. You’ve certainly started mine off in the right direction.
Is it just me or did everyone's brain just explode? I don't think I totally understand what's going on, but this has to be the coolest thing ever. So "shapes" aren't just for chords. Actually I think I see a power chord in that shuffle. So notes that work together are in shapes. Shapes help you find notes. Something just clicked I think. BTW, if I UA-cam search 12 bar bleus backing track, will that work with this?
Great video, so well taught! Why am I fooling around with all these male teachers, when there’s is fantastic woman teaching us how to play? Truth is, I did want to sign up with you, but I’ll have to save for it during these difficult times.
Lisa, welcome to the channel. Yes, it's quite the sausage fest out there huh? 🤣 I got your back. Watch out boys. There's a woman in town. 💃 Also, I do have my free crash course on the website. There's lots of free stuff fortunately for people who can't take the leap yet with the course.

I'm a somewhat young guy, but I've got a lot of arthritis in my hands. So I still need to work a bit on my dexterity before I can accomplish this.
Please explain what I doing wrong but it seems with the fingering I am playing A, A-octive, G, E then back to A. 5 5 on E string = A. 7 7 on D string = A octave. 5 5 on D string = G. 7 7 on A string = E then back to A. Thanks.
oh i see now ! yes ! i can see the pattern ! as long as the very first note of each riff actually starts on either an A note, a D note or an E note then that is all that matters isn't it ? a ha yes i get it now ! lol cool :) thanks heaps lauren ! lol :) This is PERFECT for my lead guitar riff and lead guitar turnaround that i want to practice so that i can play the 60's song called "Rock And Roll Music" by the Beatles !!!!! lol :) I will then learn an A major scale and an A Minor scale and learn A major, D major and E major Arpegios so that i can make up my own lead guitar solo for this song !!!!!! lol :)

Success achieved.
Awesome!
Thank you for this lesson, LAuren. This pattern could be used on the E-Bass guitar as well.
You're welcome! Glad it helped :)
This sounds the same as the instrumental by the yardbirds GOT TO HURRY . Good tune
Yeah, and at times it sounds like the intro to Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N Roses.
Great lesson, I can do this. What if I want to play chords for the turn around?
Awesome.
Thanks!
This is awesome! I'm definitely going to try this out because I've been struggling a bit with the 12 barre blues. This will make it much easier. Btw.... Isn't this method what they call the caged method?

@@LaurenBateman Oh, ok. I've just seen a few videos on it, and it seemed pretty similar so I was just curious.
You need to plug into an electric guitar to show the Blues. Some compression & some distortion. Chicago style Blues where it all broke loose.
Rock on. I'm mostly and acoustic player but might bust out the Gretsch
when you say pick the A DU,DU.. IT looks like sometimes you pick UD.? I gest it doesn't matter. Thank you
There is not picking in this exercise
Merci.

In addition to knowing the key you need to know the chord progression to make this work.
It's an L shape. So if you play the traditional 12 bar blues you only.beed to know your starting chord. Then follow the shape.

Thanks for the sub!
So the the 5 is on the same string as the 4 or?
Not sure I understand the question. Sorry.
great!
It's super fun to play with.
@@LaurenBateman yeah its great for chilling out and learn some notes also
These chords are the same as "Wild Thing" by The Troggs. I - IV - V (- IV - I) + G - A - G - A (VII - I) :- ))
Yes! I have a lesson on that coming out soon!
