To answer who writes like Em. Tech N9ne you should do the Kathartic series and "Outdone". There's a continuation of this song in sorts from the Marshall Mathers LP2 called "Bad Guy"
Sir u just put me on put me on with ur 2+2 on mathew
Need to listen to Bad Guy now tbh >.> it's the follow up to this
Man please have the fam check out Bad Guy.... its the sequel to this.
hey dont know if you already new but when the lightning strikes when hes sitting on the bus at 19:24 you can see stans reflection stearing at eminem in the window, my brother showed me when i was a kid always hated watching that part ever since lol.
We’ve really hit a generation where teens don’t know Classic Em. Crazy to think about.
I remember seeing the Slim Shady LP in a music store and I asked my boy if he seen this new Vanilla Ice 🤦♂️ little did I fucking know .
Nas & Eminem are amazing story tellers
Jay z is amazing at word plays
These three need a album together
Erik Johnson vanilla ice and nas and em? Lul ur crazy.
I grew up on all things late 90s and early 2000s. I'm 18 and my taste is cooked to perfection.
Nah, I think everyone's still up to date.
The term "Stan" literally comes straight from this song.
And in other uncommonly known pop culture facts, the term Karen comes from a Dane Cook joke.
NO SHIT ! FOR REAL?!
According to Nas, Jay Z is a Stan
Jessee Hutchinson no it was around be4 but it wasn’t used as stalker fan it meant “we stan” like “binge”
Lmao Killshot
He isn't gay, this is showing the progression of obsession
Well said...
Yeah, he is literally a stan bruh
@@spythere this songs were the term Stan came from
Exactly just a crazy obsession like some people get for some famous people 😅😅
Reminds me of Mariah Carey with the song Obsessed even though she was kinda of dissing Eminem 🙈🙈🙈
@@christy4469 she made it for Eminem... then Eminem destroyed her on warning shot.. when he played mariahs recording.. to him.. lol
Fun fact: At the end of the video, when Eminem realizes that it was Stan he had seen in the news and the lightning flashes that final time.. you can see Stan’s ghost in the window staring at him.
I'm sorry but that's just creepy, it's not the person themselves but the situation of having someone watching you when you don't know especially if it was a ghost since the unknown can be scary and we know nothing about ghosts/the ghost world if there is one
That doesn’t seem so fun 😟
I was hoping they’d mention that. It can be hard to see it.
I was hopping Someone said that!
😳😳😳 and the 26 ur old dude that broke into his place.
"He writes movies" is the best description of Eminems music I've ever heard!!!!
Right I hear ya on that ☺
Well yeah just looked at his interviews I feel like he's writing them as well you just a perfectionist.
Yes! I've been using that argument for years. I go further, Eminem is a character who created slim shady and a bunch of the songs. Marshall > Eminem> slim shady. All seperate characters in a story. He's brilliant.
You asked about the origin of the story: Years ago (late 70’s) there was a book called THE FAN. It was a cleverly written book about this guy who’s in love with a Broadway star and writes letters to her every day, but her assistant never lets her read them. Because his letters go unanswered, his anger escalates and he starts killing people in her world, all hoping to get her attention. What’s really great about how they wrote the book is that the story is told completely through letters, memos, telegrams and police reports.
willie tharp exactly and I’ve known that since the beginning of his career that they’re all different characters.
This dad was like imma try and be quiet during this and let my kids vibe and react. He failed
Lol too hype with this song, its cute though.
😆 lol
But he tried !
I admit, its hard to stay quite when watching something you love and trying to share/introduce it to someone.
He was quiet! Well compared to his other videos !
Kids don't realize that when Eminem first came out he entirely changed how rap was written, performed, and perceived. Totally changed what was possible using the medium of rap music. Even the DJ's that first played his music weren't sure what to make of it because it was so different. Genius.
Any other songs by eminem or any other artist like this song
He didn't change anything. The only thing unique about him was his background.

I love how he says about his little brother is such a big fan but when we see him the brother doesn't give a shit. Another great way to show that the obsession is clouding his view of reality.
But at the end, it appears as if “Matthew” is waiting by the mailbox...clever and poignant ending...

I love how geeked out the dad is to show them this. We all feel the same way still. Eminem can never be touched.
Lol for real it's awesome how much he wants to share it. I can see myself being the same way if I ever have kids.
The word "Stan" derives from 2 words "Stalker Fan" so literally Eminem created a new word and "Stan" is also in the English dictionary.
I legiterally did not know this!
@@ballknocka0001 i see what you did there
stan is short for Stanley, that's where it came from- eminem's Stan was the reason for the phrase tho
@@adamwallis3235 yeah, we know about the "Stanley" part, but it's also a play on the words stalker & fan...which is exactly how Stanley was behaving in this video. A stan.
@@sicksadworld6221 yea but I'm saying it's a chicken and egg situation- Stan the song came before stan the phrase, people then just ascribed a meaning to it afterwards
You can tell how much this song hit them at the end. They were speechless, this proves that Eminem is a genius storyteller and rapper.
14 years girls:- Belli Eilish songs are so sad
Anyone who has a brain:- have you ever listen to Stan
Both are equally as sad in different prospective. Suicidal teenage girls could relate a lot more to a song from a teenage girl (who turned 18 just last year? Or 2019) rather than a man who does indeed rap facts but hits a sort of mood thats more frustrated and accepting rather than depressed and controlled you feel? It's okay if you don't understand and I get where you're coming from but it's not just about the topic, it's the genre, the mood it all contributes to a song and some teenage girls just resonate more with Billie. Although as a 13 year old teenage girl Eminem would be infact more heart-felt and realistic to me than a Billie eillish song.
@@Leo-rd6ly Stan is literally a story where a guy kills himself and his pregnant wife no disrespect to billie but Stan is definitely more sad
@avfn ye but lots of people still relate to the story Stan... expecially the abuse part in the story where Stan beats up dido a lot maybe not as much driving of the bridge but there still a lot of relatable things in this story that can cause a lot of mental problems so while billie eillish fans suffer from depression and anxiety, where as kids who witness or feel abuse will be scarred for life suffer from depression and will be shy and timid wherever they goes, and as well the mother that will go through the abuse will suffer bad injuries, depression, anxiety, she will be paranoid to find a new bf and worst of all she’s probably gonna have to raise her kid by herself because she’s going to move out of the abusive farthers house or even worse have to give up her kid and put them up for adoption so there safe while the mum still gets beat up
Btw my comment wasn’t meant to offended anyone I’m just saying that’s fax
The worst part is that they call themselves “Stans” when they don’t even realize the fucked up meaning behind it. I think fandoms in general would be a lot better altogether if everyone heard this.
Eminem started Stan... meaning “stalker fan”
Obsessed person...
Indeed but the fun thing is that his name is Stanley. And how can it be that he says that he is M's biggest fan but also that his little brother is a bigger fan? 😁😁😁
@@giovannigio3764 that's just being a big brother.
I feel dumb for not putting that together myself 🤣🤣🤣

About the whole Matthew ordeal, Matthew's story is extended in Em's song "Bad Guy."
[SPOILER ALERT]
So, in the song, Matthew goes along to hate Eminem. He hates him because he thinks that it was Em who killed his brother, and he wants revenge. So, the story goes that Matthew breaks into Em's house, kidnaps him, places him in his trunk, drives off, and throws his car off a bridge as a form of revenge.
I am now convinced em is Illuminati.
One of the most brilliant songs ever written. A masterpiece.
i kinda like how the dad said he'll shut up and let the kids do their thing, but ends up pausing the song repeatedly to comment. when you like a song so much that it becomes impossible for you to not talk about it.
He tried lol
Heres an autograph for your brother, I wrote it on a starter cap.
Same line he used for killshot basically calling MGK stan. Legend.
Killshot he replaced “brother” with “daughter.”
Yeah
Wait.... is MGK actually Matthew?? I think the age lines up, and maybe the M stands (Stans?) for Matthew....
Tails he calling him stan. And mgk's daughter is Mathew. That was a warning to mgk about not saying Hailie's name again Eminem just letting him know that we boths dads with daughter you don't want me mentioning your daughter by name in a song just letting him know that he knows about her. Plus he saying MGK dead career over and his daughter is going to grow up bitter blaming and hating eminem for it.
@@itskev8126 thanks, I knew all that. I'm a huge Eminem fan (or Stan, except I've never bleached my hair). I've listened to Killshot about 300 times and seen many breakdown videos. I'm pretty sure I have a grasp of all of the bars.
I was just saying that since MGK is a Stan, maybe he is the original Stans little bro, Matthew.
Dido's hook in this song is amazing.
The absolute stunned, speechless faces of the kids at the end was priceless. You can't fake that reaction to this video. Em is TRULY one of the Gods of story telling in rhyme.
These kids nowadays have literally no idea how freaking big eminem was when the Marshall Mathers LP came out. I know he is still one of the biggest but back then EVERYBODY knew him. EVERYBODY
Stefan Roos I first heard Eminem on an alternative radio station..My Name Is.. before he really broke and went mainstream, bought the album. He was just so funny, and his lyrics were genius. I always tease my kids that I was listening to Eminem while they were putting Spice Girls posters on the wall, just to remind them who’s cool 😎
My white upperclass German parents know who Eminem is
Dude I am not a fan of rap at all and I know a considerable amount of Eminem. Not able to sing it but I know it.
Im from Greenland and i know Eminem
I will always remember my buddy was big on Eminem. When The Eminem Show was being hyped my buddy got a leaked version of Without Me. This was when burning CDs was a thing and he burned that song for all our group. I was in 8th grade listening to that song on repeat.
“That ain’t what a fan would do!”
Lol, but a “Stan” might
Ik I might😅
......the horrible correlation and connection to these tracks (Stan and Bad Guy), this last year in the midst of the Coronavirus going on, a fan of his snuck past Em's security, broke into his house, and Em was the first one to find him, no one was hurt or anything, but the fact that part of Bad Guy actually now has happened in real life basically, is scary and gives the song an extra eerie edge, along with this one. This song was of course written after Em received many fan mails.
Lol I love bad guy lol billie(lol psych Matthew Mitchel Bitch I even have your initials)
I think a fan would do something like that I just think it is a particularly type of fan that is obsessed and act irrationally about someone they have never met before. That has just to happen to be in the public eye and fames.
Look at the girl from the voice. The fan shot her and killed her to always be with her. This shit does happen in real life.
Eminem gave meaning to the word "Stan" and this was actually so effective that the word made its way to the Oxford dictionary!
*That's RAPGOD power*
In what sense did it make it this way. The word stan was used as short for stand, ie to say I stan by you. How did eminem change the definition?

Pretty soon they'll be calling Eminem's music, "Vintage Eminem". If that doesn't make you feel old, i don't know what will. It's about that time where you might just here vintage when Eminem is brought up in a conversation. Scary thought...

The collaboration is perfection
Urban dictionary - A crazed and or obsessed fan. The term comes from the song Stan by eminem. The term Stan is used to describe a fan who goes to great lengths to obsess over a celebrity.
Also
"stan" is a portmanteau of the words "stalker" and "fan," and refers to someone who is overly obsessed with a celebrity.

Going through a bunch of reaction videos this afternoon/evening, remembering why I was such a big Eminem fan back in the day. I appreciate your obvious love for your kids and that you're trying to raise them with the wisdom that we all had to learn the hard way. Raising them so they can try and avoid the pitfalls of just being young and dumb, but at the same time, trying to show them the importance of culture, history, and of building off the mistakes of previous generations so we don't have to start over very time and we can hopefully be better than what came before us.

Jada Forsee this level of obsession can happen without sexual inclination.
Mekel Reen there’s more to a relationship than just sex. Like i said, he’s at the very least gay for Eminem. He would be with him; another man; therefore making him at least gay for Eminem. Sexual inclination or not.
Jada Forsee he didn’t make it clear he meant it sexually and often such obsessed people think of very disturbed forms of being with with someone and closeness that don’t involve sex.
Mekel Reen the sex aspect or NOT, he’s still saying he wants to be BE with him.. I’m confused why people are acting like the only thing to being gay or being in a relationship is sex
Yes he invented the word...one thing about Em nobody really gets is his rhyme patterns,we all know he has bars and double entendres but he rhymes sentences,he rhymes paragraphs. Did you see the ghost of Stan on the window at the last part of the song when he said "it was you"
whoa. 10 years I'm a fan of this song, I can sing the song, and I just saw that now from your comment lol thx
i literally just wrote a comment saying exactly this. Its such an over-looked piece of artwork which I kinda wish Eminem had done a song where its about Stanley coming back after he faked his own death, so this would symbolise him being physically outside the window of the coach.
@@p1mmyt0w3ll yes
I've never seen that in all the time I've supported eminem over 20 years
Woooooowwwww....i honestly have seen that before until now. Thats just straight chills.
I actually liked the pauses. We got to see him parent his kids and fans alike. 😝 Finally some good family content. Love it.
I love your reaction dude, seems like a genuine fan that likes his music, i like eminem's music too and i've watched this music video a couple of time and i've just realized that i still miss some of the detail after watching your reaction
Dad's dropping knowledge. The 3 of you you, grooving together, dipping into the philosophy of the lyrics, talking about humanity...It's beautiful
This is one of the greatest songs ever. No one else can write a song like this. Em the GOAT. Proud to be a Stan.
2Pac is better
BIG TREY 2pac is dead, maybe.
@@MoistTowelette125 what does that have to do with Em being better. 2Pac's done more in music than Em will EVER do. not to mention movies also. btw there's no maybe Pac's alive no he's dead don't try that shit. Pac is the greatest so get over it
BIG TREY I actually hate most rap and hip hop, so I can’t say much. It just doesn’t sound good, to me. Eminem is one of the exceptions. 2pac being dead does matter, tho, because Eminem can still accomplish great feats, where as 2pac cannot.
BIG TREY yes 2Pac did a lot for rap but in a whole if you say pac is better then eminem I disagree the beauty of rap is everyone feels different I understand feeling 2Pac is the better rapper but him being dead does add a bit of bias. Overall success I say em is better and he was catchy to the entire country. Biggie was the same in the sense that his music appealed to the entire country I am a Cali native and I assume you may be from the west coast if so you know west coast style music was harder to like because it’s so fit to the west period. I do feel tho that pac is overlooked a lot definitely a solid #3 in my top 10 list
I remember back in the day every one across the board was waking around with Em's hair. Samoan, Mexican, Asian all ethnic groups came together over the hair style.
The stalker thing impacts because it's really how this shit can go down. Family member used to have a stalker and he'd call and leave messages, they'd start out 'sweet' and polite and friendly, and over a period of days with no response, they'd get worse until at the end he was violently threatening, screaming, cussing, saying the nastiest things he could think of (And that was just the phone end of things, things got bad not on the phone as well...Luckily nobody died, but it definitely happens.)
“I’m gonna try to shut up and let them do their thing”, doesn’t shut up or let them do their thing.
Love the vids
he’s a good dude though
When he said " and we should be together too" and his son responded with the WHAT had me rolling. LMAO
Yeah and the look of the dad too hahaha
Stan is a real weirdo
That reflection of Stan in the window in those last shots always gets me
The actor playing Stan is Devon Sawa. He’s a Hollywood actor and was a “teen heartthrob” in the late 90’s/early ‘00s. He was in the first Final Destination movie.
The female singer is Dido.....you should definitely check out some Dido music!!!
“I just drank a 5th of vodka, dare me to drive.”
Who else caught that verse from “My Name Is”?
They needed to listen to some of his other songs first to get it. I’m sure there’s a few more references I don’t know about.
Not only did he quote himself in this song, but he did through the “fan” of the song, which is really just a conception in his mind (unless something like this actually happened with someone) telling it to him. Just another profound layer.
If I have a daughter guess what Imma call her
I'll name her Bonnie
Referring to 97 Bonnie and Clyde
"But i didnt slit her throat, i just tied her up. See i aint like you, cuz if she suffocates she'll suffer more and then she'll die too" is also referring to 97 Bonnie and Clyde, in which he slits Kim's throat and then throws her in the car
What's interesting is that Stan references this song, in the first few lines of the song. This song is like a letter to all of his obsessive fans
You should get an award just for explaining this to your kids and passing on some of the roots of hiphop as it made the way for young rappers today. An example I intend to follow in the near future.
I like how at the end when the lightning strikes and you hear Em say...Damn.. Check out the window and its Stan looking in
One of the BEST/ POSITIVE/ GENUINE video REACTIONS I have seen in a LONG time! !!! Slim is 1 GIFTED ARTIST !
It should be noted that the chorus/hook is from Dido's song "Thank You." "Thank You" is a very different song that what it sounds like in "Stan." Very different meaning. Very different tone. Dido is the actress in this video playing the wife of "Stan." And "Stan" is played by a Devon Sawa. Sawa, who still acts, was basically a teen heart-throb in the 90's. He became pretty well known for his role in "Casper" (just about every female between the ages of 35-45 today at one point wanted to "keep" him). He was in a ton of other films. Probably most well known for the Final Destination films.
And yes, this is where the term "stan" comes from. The entire song is a reference to previous Emimen songs. It is impossible to explain just how massive this song/video was when it came out. The song and video were very influential and controversial. And that doesn't even touch on the craziness of Eminem and Elton John performing this song together later on.
Stan is played 90’s actor Devon Sawa who played Casper in the 90’s version and other movies.
Mind blown.
Final Destination
vero I don’t like Garbage Disposals because of that movie.
Idle Hands!
@@plindquist84 YES!!!!!
The song Bad Guy is the follow up to this where Matthew goes to seek revenge on Em for the loss of his brother Stan. Such a mastermind.
You guys made me smile. Your commentary was spot on and you’re a really good dad x) When i think I make my own musical education some days I’m bitter a bit. Wish the best to you and your tribe xx
Have you notice the last part when EM said "it was you"
The actor appears at the window staring at Eminem.
That was classic Eminem.
By the way hands down for the actor DEVON SAWA (he's the star in final destination)
I was waiting for their reaction to that part, but...
@@manuelchavez4296 I KNOW!!! That was what everyone talked about when it came out lol
but they totally got the message, it was cool
Its crazy to think younger people haven't heard/ know the significance of Stan. Don't get me wrong, it was before their time so I definitely understand. This was awesome to see you showing this to your kids, everyone killed it bro. Its wild to think that sometime in the future ill be explaining Eminem and this song to my kids saying the same sort of things "oh yea... so Eminem was blonde back then lol"
You can tell those are your kids...the way y'all enjoy music, how y'all move to the music is different but VERY similar, i love seeing stuff like this
