Legal aid for illegals is the biggest insult. If a British person sought the same, they would have to jump through some serious hoops to be told to do one. Sickening

I once asked an immigration lawyer why migrants risked their lives crossing the channel rather than remain in France. His answer was that migrants were not welcomed in France and didn't feel safe. During the chat he also suggested Britain was racist. He destroyed his own argument. The system needs drastic overhaul and the legal loopholes closed.
I go to France and have questioned French people. Basically macron isn't stupid. He says these are not refugees as they have come through lots of safe countries. So he gives them zilch. No food no hotels Nada. Go to calais and see the thousands camping in tents on the edges of the town. Hanging around the truck stops waiting to jump in the back of a lorry

They don't, really. The ones currently awaiting processing of an asylum claim are entitled to temporary housing and enough money to live on, as they are not legally permitted to work, but that's only temporary. If their application is accepted they are promptly tossed out to make their own way. A lot of them end up homeless, and none of them are entitled to any government support that wouldn't be available to a British citizen.

Disagree. When Australia did offshore detention deals with Nauru and PNG, illegal arrivals dropped to almost zero. Unfortunately we have softcock judges who have ruled that people can not be detained indefinitely and we are seeing serious crimes being committed by some former detainees let loose onshore. A public backlash, overhaul of weak laws and (hopefully) a change of government will eventually force resumption of permanent exclusion for anyone attempting to enter Australia illegally. Also we live in hope that deportations will be applied with increased vigour. At the moment hardly anyone is deported.

Can anybody explain what happens to those people whose claims are turned down? I can. Nothing at all, they just disappear into the black economy or criminal underworld.
The border force programmes show this often. They raid premises, find a number of people here illegally, and because they have no passports they are released and told to report to an immigration centre in a few days time. "None of them did, and they are now at large" says the narrator every time.
Not true. If their claim is turned down they simply appeal the decision. At the moment there is a 6 yr backlog of appeals to work through. BUt the courts are busy and lawyers busy. So they stay and get housed and £££%

In 1992 when Thorvald Stoltenberg was head of UNs refugee organisation, UNHCR he said it was their estimate that less than 5% who came to Europe had a genuine asylum case after the convention. So, 95% came from a "safe" country of origin. Why are they in Europe at all. Tony Blair said in 2002 that the asylum system was based on post-war european asylum seekers in Europe and not transnational rent seekers. Why is the right to asylum in Europe for non-europeans still here when it has been known for decades it's unmanageable ?

You stop being a refugee when you reach a safe country, if you chose not to stay in that country then you become an economic immigrant.
This is not just a U.K. problem, it’s a global problem and the UN are best placed to sort this out.
There are no refugees fleeing France, no asylum seekers fleeing persecution in France, only economic migrants that are already illegally in France.

I live in Belfast and we have been swamped by them. We can only support 1.4% growth in population in any 5 year period. In the last 3 years we have had a 33% increase in population in Belfast. This is not going well and bleeding all the local councils dry....
