Good info but id highly recommend having it sunk into the ground so that it acts as a barrier against the rhizomes creeping in as they would just crawl right under that. A good rule imo is 50/50 or 1/3 above ground/below or have it at the cut height of the grass you prefer.
Thank goodness I did not receive the bill yet I didn’t think we upu a was away qaqaaaaaqqqqqqqqwq qqq’t
this is my issue with my Zoysia. Creeping rhizomes. That's why I'm looking a metal edging vids.
This should be set into the ground to prevent grass roots from invading your flower beds. How deep depends on the kind of grass. But usually 1.5" to 2". It will also make the edging more stable.
“Or be ashamed of it and fix it later” - Glad I’m not the only that happens to sometimes!
Personally I don't like the look or safety of the metal edging up above grade that much. I think if I am going to do it I would pound or bury the edging to about 2" above grade. Just enough to keep mulch in the bed and still allow to string weed eater the outside edge.
Steel edge should be almost flush with the ground. Sure, I know, everyone leaves it sticking up like a giant machete just waiting for a kid to fall on it, ouch! But folks do lots of things improperly.
I have a fancy degree in horticulture from a very fancy University and have been awarded multiple awards in landscaping and I would never gripe to someone about some subjective choices but this is a very dangerous hazard and as the edge rusts it becomes thinner and sharper. I hope I don't offend. I hope I encourage folks to have a safer yard. Best wishes.
Nice job!!! Can you please provide the company name and link to purchase the Metal Landscaping Edging!!! Thanks!!!
Thanks for giving this lady the confidence she needed...Took 2 seconds! No more mulch pouring into my driveway when it rains.
You are welcome...it works great!
Your suppose tap the edging in ground half inch or 3 quarter that why it have slots in middle for stacks . ™💯
Lowe’s only has 4 foot sections. Where did you get longer lengths?
Landscaping is one of the most gratifying job's.. Looks awesome
Thinking of using this as a barrier between my neighbor. My yard slopes slightly downward towards the street but levels out closer to my house. How would I adjust the slope to it being level? Any help would be grateful.
Hello have you figured out yet?
Recommend watching the manufacturers video instead of of this one. Sorry. But so many things done wrong with the way he installed the edging.
completed this job nearly 7 years ago...it still looks great and has no issues what so ever. The factory tells you to burry it, we're building up a flower bed....so this is the way I did it. Everyone doesn't do everything just as the book says to do my friend....a little creativity never hurt anyone...putting me down for it does
If that's steel, it will rust eventually. Spend extra for the aluminum pro grade that installs the same way.
Not offered at my Lowes
Can these be cut to fit - many gardens or areas are not the exact length that metal strips or edging. How do you make to fit? Do these come various lengths
hit up lowes or home depot next time you're in the garden department....you'll find everything you need...and yes you can cut them...but better to just cruise around the store and look...if your garden area isn't the exact lenght, then move them around to make them fit, and or prepare to expand your garden area by a foot or two if needed...pretty simple work around ...nobody's garden will be the exact perfect size
Why didn't you clean out the grass inside the edging? DId you dig out later? Why not clean up first???
I filled it with mulch...mulch killed the grass...why do extra work when it's not necessary ?
Is that good for a hill?
Wooooooooooo!!!!HeeeeeeeeeHeeeeeeeeee!!!!ALright!!!! 🤗. Love watchin ThE FarM!!!
I am thinking about installing some of this. How is it holding up after all these years?
looks as good as it did the day I installed it! Couldn't be happier!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Thanks
What is odd about this metal edging you have, is that the joined spikes you have to break off and remove to use, are shorter than the additional spikes sold at the box stores to go into the middle sections of these 8' long pieces. Also, the other spikes are not indented to be hammered into and down into those metal slots of each 8' piece. If you have rheumatoid arthritis as I do, don't expect those attached spikes to be easy to break off. You may have to lay the long piece down on the ground and then put a small piece of a 2X4 under it to give you some leverage when you try to remove them from the long metal piece. I wish you had shown how to trim the long pieces, should you have an area which is not even with the lengths of metal you have and it has to be cut down. I am installing my green metal edging today, but the high humidity and the heat here today means not getting onto it until later in the evening. It always works better if you have someone to hold the metal as you work and bend it, but it is doable when alone if you can just use your 3rd hand or even your monkey tail. :-) :-) :-)
Be proud of it, or be ashamed and fix it later....put it on a T shirt Josh!! Copyright it!!
Love ya brother!!
lol thanks buddy
nice ram im a huge dodge fan hard belive our plow truck is 20 years old still working like a tank woooooo
You're such a real person. I love it.
Thanks buddy
I used that in my backyard! Works great. I reinforced the joints on the inside with some left over rebar because my mower guys use the industrial mowers.
I was just outside in my yard trying to put this edging down for the first time and decided to come in and watch a video to make sure I was doing it right! I'm so glad I did because it was trying to pound it into the ground without snapping off those stakes! Thanks so much for the video. You're a fun guy to learn from :). Keep on making videos and watch out for those turds!
Glad to help!...If you watch the "this old house" version..they say to burry it....to me it makes no sense...it's great for containing mulch and establishing a nice barrier ...thanks for the positive feedback brotha...I hope you'll stick around and enjoy the channel!
Only thing I would say to help with getting it to anchor well is to use rubber mallet to hit the center of each piece first so it doesn’t seesaw on you
Trade help works well and makes for good neighbors. Good info on the edging.
Yes it does!
Good Job Explaining, but I am planning on hammering part of mine into the ground to keep mulch behind it. Thanks for posting the video!
Looks awesome josh btw you have awesome neighbors
Thanks man
Just give it a little tappy.tap,tap,taparoo.
just taaaap it in!
Older video but it's still serving! Thanks for this! Can anyone tell me how I can make sure I don't hit any irrigation lines. I have a couple of heads near that I want to wrap around. If anyone can help a lady not create a disaster it would be greatly appreciated!
Did you ever get your carrier bearing fixed. I love your farm by the way
LOL....I have not yet...I think I'm gonna go buy a press to do the job...I have a buddy with a press but he's not into the camera thing at his shop :(
Stoney Ridge Farmer cool thanks just making sure I didn’t miss anything
Stoney Ridge Farmer you always need a press it will make jobs that require so painless
Good stuff, thanks!
I just put this stuff before watching any videos and I realize I didn’t connect the pieces right but it works lol I overlapped them a ton but theyre all staked very flush. Hammer works if you dont have a mallot but it will rough up the piece you are putting in a little. My landscape turned out pretty dang good for no experience. Id recommend this to everyone
Hi Tony, thanks for your demo. One problem I came across was hammering the stake into a rock that made the stake bend. Best to test with a screw driver where you stake is going to make sure no hard rocks there to bend or block the stake.
lol...well, I'm josh ...you do need to check for rocks...and if ya hit one ya might need to reposition and try again
What happens of you come to the end and only need, say 2' more, not an entire piece?
then you need another piece...same as if you were putting a floor in your house and you got to the end and needed 1/2 piece or painting a room...and ya run out of paint on the last stroke...bummer huh
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Thanks. Yes you are right, and at about $30 a pop for one strip it could get pricey, but I do believe it is good edging.
You forget to show the installation of the additional stakes you promised!🙄
it would have been nice to see the finished edge after line trimming. Thanks for the video.
hmmm...you mean after cutting ?
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I mean it appears to be good quality product and the grass was a little long next to the edging. In my opinion it would be nice to see the grass line trimmed up next to the edging. Everyone has there own taste and I'm expressing mine. After all the effort to install it and show it I would have grabbed the weed whacker and line trimmed to make it pop.
Take care.
helping neighbor, how nice is that!
Hi..... Thank you 🎥👍👍👍
The hardest part for me, a 63 yr old lady, was separating the stakes from the metal edging. I was able to by using a sparkle tool & hammer to separate one welded area and then bend back & forth. Nice video. Thanks!
supposed to sink it in the ground so only 1/2 inch sticks above ground level.
How do you handle a slope?
Looking great.. very educational.. Every time you said tap it the movie happy Gilmore came to mind when he was talking to the golf ball..
That metal landscaper is expensive, like $30 for 8 feet at Lowes
It needs to be buried 2 inches in the ground according to Colmets instructions.
I switched from mulch to river rock check it out looks so much better than the mulch the weeds have a hard time getting through you can also get recycled glass it looks good in the beds mixed with the river rock
I would love to see a pic of the river rock with recycled glass.
Thanks man! I got a tool to make it go a little more in the ground. I appreciate it. Such a helpful video for a first timer
Where did you get this stuff? I was at Home Depot and didn't see any!! And what's it called?
Lowes
Great video but I didn't see you explain what the sawzall is for. Or, did I just miss it?
If I had to guess, the sawzall (or hacksaw) would be used to trim down the final piece if it's longer than you need
Wooooo! Your song is genius, you just need more cow bell, lol! Great channel👍🏾
LOL
7:04 - "and you put this little ridge to the inside" ... NOPE: At least not according to the detailed instructions from Col-Met (the manufacturer) They clearly state the ridge or bump on the stake is supposed to face out or away from the inside or flower garden area. That said I'm not sure how much difference it really makes
well...the instructions also tell you to burry it....this is real world my brotha and this has held up awesome for years now
You wear the best truck going, but you own a Dodge…what’s up with that?
Hi Josh i like the edging but wouldn't it have been easyer to edge and clean out the beds first
Yeah, I’m surprised he’s not sinking it in two inches.
Why use metal and not rubber? Good video thank you!
Josh D
Looking awesome man. I always give you a thumbs up. The question I can't understand is who is giving you thumbs down bunch of idiots.
Keep up the good work looking great nice property can't wait to you get some cows . Then the fun begins where do you see the size of those landmines. My neighbor has a dairy farm. I live out in the country and I like it that way country Song ya know.
General repair
Haters will hate!
More great info!
And Swooper ain't lying!👇 river rock looks awesome as bedding!
I just bought a new house and spent days taking that rusted junk out of the ground.
Just edge your beds it's free all you need is a good spade
I like these ...what ur forgetting is that we live in a mobile home..so we can't really do what we should do....that's edge with a shovel and throw the dirt back against the house so water flows away from the foundation. I agree a spade does the job for a conventional home
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Good point. Thank you for the response.
What is the manufacturer's name of this edging
What is the brand name of this edging and where did you buy it?
Not impressed. I would have thought you would lose the edge pretty quickly with grass roots and weeds growing under the metal as it has not been sunk at all into the edge of the border. Would have dug over the edges of the border too to save disturbing the lawn edge. Good illustration of how not to do it. Heh ho, I shall look elsewhere.
just fine with me buddy...glass kinda half empty on your side of the screen it seems. So...this has been up for 3 or more years now...still looks as good as new..perfect for containing the mulch and flower and so easy to weed whack. I think you should consider my way....eventually it will be buried up....cm by cm year after year.
Thank you for making this video
Seems like if you were starting from scratch, you would do edging first, then add mulch after the edging is installed.
yep...but I'm not my friend
The guys at Home Depot tell me that I could break those inns open and I never could I’m gonna have to take them back tomorrow
get a pair of pliers and getr done....ask a neighbor to help ya out..you can do it!
That’s great it’s really nice , never used it before but I might now it looks good and easy!!
Can I double stack those? Thanks
Good Info, but how do you cut the edging? For example I want to edge a flower mound, but not sure how to cut it if I have too much length.
Take a hack saw and cut it my friend
So glad I ran across your video... hubby and I looked at these last weekend... definitely buying some and getting my flowerbeds done this coming weekend! Thanks for sharing!!!!👍
Awesome Jennifer...get ready to pile in the much afterward...but you'll really like the look and low maintenance
What a great video :) thank you for not swearing at all, we greatly appreciate it and your kindness.
Yessmam.....I might have one curse word in all 500 of my vids...I hope you subscribed to see our farm adventure!
Hi what did you do at the downspout?, the edge is blocking? Thanks
put an extension on it
Why the saw? I did not see you use it.
Nice work man! And nice Happy Gilmore reference. “Just tap it in.”
I was already trying to work out what that quote was from. Thanks for saving me being kept awake by it. Ha.
How much would you charge for that?
good demo but I have 90 degree (i.e. square) areas I'm working with. A demo on how to bend 90 degrees would be helpful to include. Otherwise, great show.
Great video but you never told us what to do with the Reciprocating saw. Is that to cut into the grass roots?
The saw is to trim any pieces of the edging that are too long.
OMG, all I wanted was to see edging installed. Instead I got blah blah blah
Blah blah blah is his specialty. King of the bullshitters.
Where do I buy or order? WhT is the brand?
Thank you! I’ve had the supplies for a month.
not a bad job ....just takes a little head scratching
"be ashamed of it and fix it later",...yeah, I identify with that comment. Thanks for the tips. I'm installing this type of border, and yes, it comes in black (too).
What do you do at a 90° angle?
What is the name of the edging and where can I buy it?
got that exact material at Home Depot yesterday
"I've been meaning to do this for at least 2 years" is what my wife would say is my motto? LOL I will neither confirm nor deny this accusation!
What's the name of the trim please? I'm looking for some but only plastic & cheap stuff available.
"Just tap it in. Just tap it in. Give it a little tappy. Tap Tap Taparoo."
I went straight to the comments as soon as he said that to see if anybody would say anything about that...and I wasn't disappointed 😂😂😂👏
Where did you find this? Great video!!
Lowes
What brand is the edging so I can look for it? Great vid! Thanks
it's the only edging they sell at lowes my friend
Thanks!
Looks good man ! Nice job !
I am still watching the video so he may have mentioned the price but I only need a few pieces and it will run me $600+ dollars compared to $40 for the weak plastic stuff. My last house came with it and I thought it was cheap until now. Maybe it used to be a lot cheaper.
Seems like you can’t do 90 degree angles...
They sell the 90 Degree angle mounts
I wonder if the coating contains lead. It's a big problem with products like this. Test kits are not expensive.
I've never used that before. So I thought I'd look up a tutorial. Thank you for your information. I have to do my neighbors today. I'll let you know how it goes.
Anyone have any experience cutting this stuff? I did see using a hack saw or reciprocating saw, but am just concerned that the ends will be sharp/dangerous.
The sooner you get to it the sooner we get through it!
Great video, wish I could see how to bend into a right angle and also how to cut or "break" by fatiguing without a saw...wish in one hand and spit in the other, as the old saying goes. Wife wants an absolute square so bought corner squares, but am going to need to make right angle bends and cut a few....will figure it out. Great Personality in your video and will watch your videos for my next projects...very helpful overall! Thanks!!!
Looks cheap sticking up out of the ground. Needs to only stick up slightly, the point is to keep grass roots from creeping to the other side.
Was thinking about trying this out this weekend, and now you have this gal convinced! Thanks for such a great video. I love when people truly want to help others and are just genuine and authentic. And funny! Great personality and easy-to-follow steps!
thanks Amy
Great DYI video and I didn't know about the spikes already on the sections!!
Block of wood and small Sledge works better. I use a 4 in handheld cutoff to cut mine.
Nice seiko !
had it for about 6 years now....best darn watch I've ever owned! Just had it serviced and new crystal put in...what a great watch!
What's the brand and where to buy
lowes or home depot in garden center my friend...not sure brand
Who is the manufacture of the product and where can you buy it?
Lowes has it and probably Home Depot as well.
