If your well or lake water at your home, cottage or cabin is brown, it could be tannins in your water! This video explains how you can tell if it's tannins and how to get rid of that tea colored water for your family.
Gary that was the most concise video I've watched on exactly what tannins are and how to install systems to remove them. I have searched through and watched about 20 videos on tannins, brown water, filters and installations. Yours touches on every aspect. Awesome reference video. Thank you.
Also consider, tannin removal softeners use an organic scavenging resin that targets anions in the water. You should expect a drop in pH after the system as well as an increase in chloride concentration. These systems, when applied incorrectly can create or exacerbate existing corrosion issues
Chlorides can only be removed through reverse osmosis. A complete water analysis before and after your current treatment is the first step you determine what’s most appropriate
Thanks Gary for your insight on tannins and the solutions available. I have been trying to find a system to remove the color from our well water. Your video gave me a path to determine the exact problem and then the available solutions. Your video/knowledge was very much appreciated.
Can the water softener tank and the tannin removal tank share the same brine tank? I only really need to remove the tannin when I fill my hot tub, once or twice a year. Thank you.
@@water_estore Thank you, Gary. The only problem is that the hose outlet that I use for the hot tub comes off the softener. So my hot tub water is part of the house system. I need something smaller to hook up to the outlet that I use the for the hot tub. I don't mind the tannin in the house. We have an reverse osmosis system for the drinking water. But for the hot tub, would like it clearer. Our outside hose is not connected to the softener, but has heavy iron. Thank you for the response.
We are on a class B community well with 12 hookups available 6 homes using it at this time. There is a media filter system in the well house but that does not take care of tannins. Is it possible to take care of tannins at the well house instead of at each home. Also is is possible to use just a media tank without the salt brine tank ? Thank you
No, for 6 homes the system would need to gigantic. You would need one of these for each home waterestore.com/products/hum-tannin-water-filter-removes-colour. Any they all use brine tanks
Hello Gary & thanks for posting these videos. We live in Ontario & the water in our tanin buster brine tank was initially clear however it has been extremely yellow and appears stagnant for weeks now. Is this normal or should we have it checked? Thanks again for your feedback.
I have seen that happen with tannin filters. Try manually regenerating it to see if it sucks all of the brine out during the brine cycle. If it does it’s ok
What if you need a bacterial filter too, because you have both yellow water ( not iron) and bacteria, what filter and where does it go in the process? Also, not much floorspace is available….
Is there anything else that would cause water to be yellow ( not iron, it tested low) because I’d hate to buy the HUM and salt tank and see yellow water still in the toilets and tub! Is there a specific test for tannins?
Yes, there is. You can take your water to a lab and have it tested for tannins or mail us about 16 ounces and we can test it for you. info@waterestore.com
No because we have two websites, a Canadian One and a USA one, different prices. Also, I never mention prices in my videos becasue prices tend to change in time so if some one watches the video a year from now the price likely will be different. You are best to email us for pricing at info@waterestore.com
I'm sure that at some point it will need replacement but after 20 years of tannin filter installations, I have never had to replace the media in any one of them.
Thanks for your knowledge sharing! I have a water softener system and recently my hot water only has been coming out yellowish brown. What can I do to determine if it's the water softener or my hot water heater that is the problem?
Hi Gary… great video but it raises a question. So my house currently has a sulpher filter (carbon) with air intake for regen. i was told the bed suppose to last years but after 2 years it’s like a rebed required. It seems i have tannin or someone else told me the slim inside tank (on control unit input) is sulpher bacteria. So if I’m to add a tannin filter after the current old filter, this filter will always have a media issue after 2 years, therefore a no way out on having a piece of mind for at least 5 years since everyone seems to claim sukfer filter should last that long. PS. can the rust out be used to clean the media so it’s like new again or a rebed is required.
If you suspect that you might have iron bacteria, I would have it tested by a lab to confirm. Iron bacteria cannot be treated with air, you would need a chemical injection system which I do not work with.
@@water_estoreWell it’s been a while (with all Covid my project was put aside). So it’s not sulpher bacteria and it’s tannin. So i already have a sulpher filter (carbon - centaur NDS), would i put the tannin before or after the my sulphur filter? Any reason why it could not be before…. as install space would have to be redone.
If the tannins are only present when there's a good rain, will the filter adjust for when we are not in the raining season and the filters isn't needed as much or will it still use the same amount of salt?
@@water_estore Thank you! Your channel is a wealth of good info. I am still trying to get things sorted out with my new home and well, and you have been super helpful. Wish you were here in Tennessee!!
Gary , I love your videos... I do have a question for you.. My friend is using a softener head to treat iron and of course he is using a chemical. What media should I purchase to replace the one he currently has that will work with the system he has ? He cannot afford the air injection system you offer.
This depends on many variables. What chemical is he using? How much iron? What drain line flow control is he using? The system would need to be totally engineered.
After the tannin filter the pH goes down slightly. A one cubic foot tannin filter like this one waterestore.com/products/hum-tannin-water-filter-removes-colour uses about 120 lbs of salt per month.
So is it safe to have an iron filter and a tannins filter? And the iron filter has to be set up before the tannins filter? The systems look exactly the same. And I just had my media replaced in my iron filter with a 700 dollar medium recently.... now with my water test coming back with high tannins... Could I just not add a salt tube to my existing iron filter because it has a strong medium in it?
My Toilet bowl is intermittently brown, sometimes it is, other times its not. The faucet and shower water appears clean. I am fed city water. I do have a water filter, tall one, so it seems to be working on shower and faucets, so why not toilet? Each toilet tank is Brown i.e. 2 accept the single toilet down stairs. Any tips?

Like all solutions, there are pros and cons to consider.
Any recommendations for then removing the chloride and rebalancing the water? We already have small amounts of corrosion on our stainless.

Hey Gary, are tannin filters effective at removing anything else from well water?
No, just tannins.
Does the salt end up in the water in the house, or is it just for back flushing purposes?
99% is backwashed out, there is avery low sodium residual.

What effect does chlorine or hydrogen peroxide have if injected prior to the tannin removal?
Don't know, never tried, but Tannin media is very expensive so I would not experiment.

How about zeta filters like the ones US filters offers?

Hi Gary,
What does H202 treat?
Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizer and can oxidize iron and sulphur out of water.and kill bacteria. Usually not effective for Tannin removal
Will this peroxide system take the yellow color out and the stinky smell?
