Do You Have IRON or TANNINS in Your WATER?

  • Is your well or lake water brown? You know like a weak tea color? Tired of complaints and comments from your children and guests about the color of your water? If you fill a bathtub does the color just keep getting darker? So how does a Tannin Filter work to get rid of that color anyway? I’m going to explain it all to you starting right now!
    Typically color in your water can be caused by a few things but if the color is brown or a rusty brown it can be either tannins or iron. How do you know which one? You could have the water sent to a lab for testing which is expensive, mail your water sample to us for testing, which is free but takes a while or you can do a couple of simple tests yourself.
    Get some white styro-foam cups, run some water and check to see if there is any color in the water immediately as the water flows from the faucet into the cup if there’s no color, it’s not tannins. If it turns brown when you let it sit, it’s not tannins, the color is being caused by iron. If there is color in the water immediately when it flows from the faucet it could be either tannins or iron and you need to move on to the second test.
    The next test, to determine if your water with color in it is tannins or iron is to add about ½ teaspoon of iron out, waterestore.ca/products/pro-r... stir it up and if after the water clears, all of the color is gone, it is iron and you need an iron filter. If the color remains you have tannins in your water.
    So you now know you have tannins, how do we get rid of it? If you use very little water you might consider a cartridge type filter like one of these waterestore.ca/products/aries... for your home, but be careful, that filter will only remove tannins from about 300 gallons of water and at only .5 gpm. So this will only work for a cabin or cottage where there is very little use or for a single faucet at the kitchen sink.
    For a whole house application you would need one of these waterestore.ca/products/hum-t...
    If you think that it looks exactly like a water softener to you, you’re correct! They look like and work exactly like a water softener.
    Tannin filters have two tanks, one with a control valve at the top, which is called the media tank. The other tank (that looks like a garbage can) with a lid that you open, holding the salt, is called the brine tank.
    All of the water in the house runs through a bed of specialty purpose ion exchange resin. This resin fills most of the media tank. As water passes over the beads, the tannins stick to the beads and are removed from your water.
    Eventually, the resin gets covered with tannins and those tannins need to be removed from the media so they can continue to remove the tannins from your water. The tannin filter regenerates every 3 days, or sooner if the capacity has been used up, which typically is programmed to happen at night, or anytime there is very little water usage in the home. By the way a tannin filter uses about 12 lbs of salt per regeneration.
    Another way to remove tannins from your water is with Reverse Osmosis systems. I don’t recommend RO for tannin removal for the whole house, cabin or cottage but if all you want to do is remove tannins from your drinking water, you can use our HUM Water Saver 75 for tannin removal. waterestore.ca/products/hum-w...
    Tannin filters install exactly the same as a water softener. If you have multiple pieces of water filtration equipment for your well water, the tannin filter goes after your iron filter and water softener but before the pre filtration for your UV Light.

    Gary , I love your videos... I do have a question for you.. My friend is using a softener head to treat iron and of course he is using a chemical. What media should I purchase to replace the one he currently has that will work with the system he has ? He cannot afford the air injection system you offer.

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  3 роки тому +1

      This depends on many variables. What chemical is he using? How much iron? What drain line flow control is he using? The system would need to be totally engineered.

    Hello Gary & thanks for posting these videos. We live in Ontario & the water in our tanin buster brine tank was initially clear however it has been extremely yellow and appears stagnant for weeks now. Is this normal or should we have it checked? Thanks again for your feedback.

      I have seen that happen with tannin filters. Try manually regenerating it to see if it sucks all of the brine out during the brine cycle. If it does it’s ok

    We are on a class B community well with 12 hookups available 6 homes using it at this time. There is a media filter system in the well house but that does not take care of tannins. Is it possible to take care of tannins at the well house instead of at each home. Also is is possible to use just a media tank without the salt brine tank ? Thank you

      No, for 6 homes the system would need to gigantic. You would need one of these for each home waterestore.com/products/hum-tannin-water-filter-removes-colour. Any they all use brine tanks

    Hi Gary… great video but it raises a question.
    So my house currently has a sulpher filter (carbon) with air intake for regen. i was told the bed suppose to last years but after 2 years it’s like a rebed required. It seems i have tannin or someone else told me the slim inside tank (on control unit input) is sulpher bacteria. So if I’m to add a tannin filter after the current old filter, this filter will always have a media issue after 2 years, therefore a no way out on having a piece of mind for at least 5 years since everyone seems to claim sukfer filter should last that long.
    PS. can the rust out be used to clean the media so it’s like new again or a rebed is required.

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  2 роки тому +2

      If you suspect that you might have iron bacteria, I would have it tested by a lab to confirm. Iron bacteria cannot be treated with air, you would need a chemical injection system which I do not work with.

    • @zigarooSJunk
      @zigarooSJunk Рік тому

      @@GarytheWaterGuyWell it’s been a while (with all Covid my project was put aside). So it’s not sulpher bacteria and it’s tannin. So i already have a sulpher filter (carbon - centaur NDS), would i put the tannin before or after the my sulphur filter? Any reason why it could not be before…. as install space would have to be redone.

    Also consider, tannin removal softeners use an organic scavenging resin that targets anions in the water. You should expect a drop in pH after the system as well as an increase in chloride concentration. These systems, when applied incorrectly can create or exacerbate existing corrosion issues

    So is it safe to have an iron filter and a tannins filter? And the iron filter has to be set up before the tannins filter?
    The systems look exactly the same. And I just had my media replaced in my iron filter with a 700 dollar medium recently.... now with my water test coming back with high tannins...
    Could I just not add a salt tube to my existing iron filter because it has a strong medium in it?
