I sat down meaning to just play through the first level and wound up beating the whole damn thing. It's the first game in a while that immediately pulled me in like that.
Can someone enlighten me. Every possible Google result says "Cultic available on Steam, PS4 and Switch in 2022." But Cultic is not on the Nintendo of PlayStation eShops. Googling "release date" just results in another loop of "releasing in 2022". Anyone know when it's available on Switch or PS4? Thanks!
I loved Blood as a kid. Been hoping for a remake of sorts. Blowing up enemies by sticking dynamite in them as they run around screaming for help before exploding was satisfying. Not to mention their heads falling off and you can kick them around
Cultic is cool as fu***, but yeah, the Blood universe and weapons are better, more original, artistically speaking. The perfect game is probably a mix between the fantastic gunplay of Cultic (that lever action rifle... 🥰 ), and the Blood level design, universe and freakingly original weapons set.
@@rpemulis Interestingly, the dev didnt actually wanted to just remake BLOOD. He said his major inspiration were old horror game such as Silent Hill, RE4 and Dark Forces. Wow, probably the most comprehensive and engaging review I've ever seen in a long time. When I watch other reviews I find myself closing the tab due to lack of interest. Thank you. Subbed.
@@jarg8 Not necessarily, no. But, if the game developers are going to dm depict a pretty accurate weapon, then a reviewer can at least call it the accurate name.
To my knowledge, you play as one of the many PIs that get hired to find people's missing loved ones. Which is why we find journals of another investigator that came before you.
I'm on the second area and I gotta say, that abandoned ship puzzle mini quest was so damn good. Talk about expert level design and great messed up scenarios. This game rocks, plain and simple, lots of secrets.
Wow those environments look absolutely stunning. I grew up playing on the PS1, so games like Spyro, Spider-Man and the like. I really missed the era of gaming that looked like this. But I’m so glad it’s coming back now so I can experience it. What I was able to play on my PS one was quite similar, but this is something else entirely
Would love a Fallout style action RPG in this style. We don't need cutting edge graphics, although these are nice in their style. Need great content and gameplay.
For these games I specially like how it looks that aspect of "seeing the pixels" and the pixels moving in moments of high movement gives the impression of being in some sort of Dream-Nightmare state, something that older games had as an accidental collateral component of them... That's why I also try to play most of my games in x480 resolutions, when they are available. Give me BIG huds and pixels moving... 🤘
Now for the more controversial topic, I see it's yet another game among the dozens of new games that are coming out that don't seem to have a focus when it comes to Lighting and the use of Darkness as a gameplay element. You see these beautifully crafted environments but Lighting remains mostly homogeneous across them, ever noticed? And dark areas don't really look "dark" as in pitch black, they look like more like dim grayed-out. Not the "True Darkness" I used to see in older games when technology was much more limited, such as Thief, System Shock 2, even Quake 1 and 2, Hexen 2... Games pre 2004 or some shit...
For whatever reason (DirectX ? OpenGL ?) games stopped having "true darkness" after the market became dominated by GPU's as the new standard... something to do with renderers I guess...
Blood is one of my favorite games along with Quake, Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D, No One Lives Forever 2. I absolutely love old school, atmospheric, intense fps games. Is Cultic chapter 1 worth picking up? When do you think chapter 2 could release?
I can personally say this review is ON point, Cultic has been all I've thought about since I got it, it has this magic to it, grimy, yet beautiful, with solid tight gunplay, its a gem! Definitely pick it up!
"The game is set around the mid 1950s, although that's a total guess..." accompanied by several screenshots that clearly show dates that set the game in the mid 60s... Minor gaff, and editing and audio recording usually take place at different times, but kind of funny to see anyway. I'd also posit that a thing that makes Cultic stand out as a not quite "sequel" to Blood is the easier difficulty. Cultic is by no means "easy", but it's not Blood either. If anything it is a good primer for Blood, with it being a sort of stepping stone that gets players used to some of the mechanics and tactics of that game making it a more surmountable challenge to go into it after this. Also, the skeletons are just reskinned cultists. Thematically and tonally it makes perfect sense and is not a bad thing, but I wouldn't call them "different" enemies as they behave the exact same way. There is plenty of enemy variation here, but it seemed odd to highlight the skeletons as a juxtaposition for the cultists as the video does. Finally, I had no issues with the platforming. There were a grand total of two I resorted to quicksaving and quickloading to complete, and both were completely doable without it, and I was just being lazy so I didn't have to take an easy to navigate but tedious winding path to get back to where I needed to be to make a single tricky jump to complete them. I missed one secret in the entire game on my first playthrough, and left maybe a dozen enemies alive total. One of those two I shamefully savescummed is the one shown in the video, and only because you need to carry an object with you so you can hop on top of it at the end to get to the reward. I did that a lot more often in Ion Fury than I did in Cultic, and I'm not an amazing player. I still haven't beaten Blood on Extra Crispy, and usually go for an "Ultra Violence" equivalent level of difficulty for most FPS games and am satisfied with getting far above "Par" times. Mostly agree with the review though, Cultic is great, and a lot more accessible than Blood, without being so easy it turns off fans of these kinds of games.
Yeah I realised while editing that the intro very clearly states the date, but had to leave it in due to time constraints haha. Thanks for sharing your wider thoughts, too!

Ok well let me try to make since of the story you're invatgating Disappearances judging by the newspapers and the badge on the table before the end of the intro shows a Detective badge and newspapers talking about Disappearances and that the detective in charge of the case was Relieved of duty meaning you What evidence you find leads you to the 1st level of the game and juging by the very early 60s Mustang it has to be the the 60s or 70s when this game is taking place.
"if I had to guess, the game takes place around the 1950s, though that is a total guess" immediate next frame shows someone who went missing Sept. 29 1963 lol, how could you guess so wrong?
Just a note: the old buildings depicted in Cultic don't use "drywall", they use wood boards and plaster. The word "drywall" comes from the old plaster walls that weren't "dry" when constructed. They were actually wet. Just to clarify. Great review!
