      I’ve been to multiple physiatrists multiple times, and I can assure you, they do not diagnose anything in that manner. The psychiatrist’s job is to tone in on specific issues with mental health and prescribe medicine to help with said problems. They also are supposed to monitor you medicine and what it does for you, whether you have side effects or if it works or not. They don’t often diagnose things. You usually go through specific tests to get diagnosed with most things. Bi polar and schizophrenia are usually not diagnosed through tests but through psychiatrists. Autism is the same way.

      Yeah, I mean, she was thinking about cutting off her finger, I think that calls for a bit of concern. Sounds a bit like OCD and intrusive thoughts to me (However, OCD and intrusive thoughts are typically more like "If you don't do x, y bad thing will happen." so I'm not sure. A lot of these sound like they could be connected to real neurotypes and mental illnesses/disorders like autism)

    Mark in my opinion you should really pay attention to what the people say before and during the scanning. Because the machine you use is given by the structure, the same ones who are keeping your daughter without even explain why exactly. Is kinda obvious that this structure doesn't care about sick people, and it's only interest is to make everyone very submissive and to follow the same mindset, so it's easier to keep them all under your thumb. So basically what I'm trying to say is: do NOT always believe in the machine, but listen to the people, because the machine will always warp the reality and their words to make it seems that these people are all bloodthirsty maniacs

      While this makes logical sense it turns out that the girl who was acting like she was a cyborg rights activist actually has one prompt on the mind reader thingy were she shows disgust for non-cyborgs. So the reading is correct. I think the statement is meant to be made by the player, the only thing the machine is doing is showing the patients visions.
      So basically. You can trust the statements at the end of a mindscan, it's just not always you see all the different prompts which can explain it.

    As someone who actually suffers from mental health issues, this game is absolutely terrifying, because even though it's clearly science fiction, the things it makes you do are in fact based around misconceptions people have about mental health.
    Edit: To clarify, because some people are arguing about it in the comments, I'm not trashing the game. I mean that I'm thinking of it as a very effective horror game.

      Same, and not only is the game terrifying, but personally the fairly nonchalant way Mark is playing it (to be fair I don't think he was expecting it to be serious/thought provoking like this) is actually super triggering to me. I'm hoping that now that he knows what the game is actually about he will approach it with a different mindset and take it a little more seriously, but I'll just have to wait and see.

      I'm pretty sure that's kinda the point of the game though. This game, like Papers, Please, seems in no way in favour of the dystopia it presents. And perhaps those misconceptions are the point. See how by erasing the "mental illnesses" it actually also drains their personality out? Which could mean the corrupt government of the game is searching for imperfections in the wrong places due to their own misconceptions of mental illness, treating mental illness as an evil thing. It's SUPPOSED to make you think "wait that's not at all how that works, that's EVIL" because yes, it IS evil.

    The fact that some autistic people are treated like these patients is terrifying. Having to meet a social quota, being considered insane for doing or saying things that aren't "normal", having a disconnect with your body, not causing any harm but people insisting you're bring harmful, the "treatments" being questionable and causing long term damage? Like idk, electric shock? Forcing kids and adults to do things that harm themselves for the sake of looking normal.

      I have schytzotypal and i relate to this a lot. A lot of my disorder is social/mood, and many people in my life have been very policing of my behavior and I’ve developed a lot of coping mechanisms that maybe arent the best to try and appear normal, or to try and not think about how different i am. My husband is one of the few people who has made an attempt to understand me, and he gets how and when i get irritable, when i need to be alone, and what social situations trigger me. Im so grateful for him, but i dealt with a lot of feelings of loneliness and isolation before we met. Im on the way to accepting that im not broken, im just different. But it’s hard. We need more education and acceptance of mental struggles.

      I have both, although the ADHD is more impactful in my case… Yeah, it’s a struggle to unlearn the idea that not rocking the boat/other people’s convenience is more important than your own well-being! Especially when a lot of the tricks I’ve found that help me are… pretty simple and obvious?? So then I feel stupid for not doing them sooner. All because I thought I had to push myself to do things the “normal” way.
      (I mean obviously my meds are the biggest help, but like… I used to not be able to do laundry. Basically ever. Then I realized that my brain was getting overwhelmed with the number of “steps” in the process, so I simplified it to basically “clean basket, dirty basket.” So I can physically *see* the baskets empty and fill and when the clean one’s start running low, the dirty basket just gets dumped into the wash. When everything’s clean and dry it gets dumped back in a basket and brought back to my bedroom floor. *Done.* Lazy and slobbish? Perhaps. But clean wrinkled clothes are better than dirty, *still* wrinkled clothes!! And I’ve worked out how to stack them into a tower where I can reach into any basket without moving the ones above it, so… apparently I just needed a completely transparent dresser with deep drawers that are always open??)

    I feel like one major tip and life lesson this game is trying to promote is that if the person's mental disorder isn't harmful or dangerous to themselves or others, then why should we try to change them? Look at Bert Herbert, for example. He was a harmless man with an imaginary friend made from his constant loneliness and need of companionship. Finding that fine line of helping people and forcing people to be what you or society wants is often hard to find.

    • @aliceiscalling
      @aliceiscalling 3 роки тому +122

      Bert Herbert was showing signs of losing himself. He constantly talked about his Little Man and it became bad enough that his employer became concerned. I actually find his wife's message concerning. If a person married an untreated schizophrenic person because "I love their imagination" and was upset when they were treated, wouldn't most people find that fetishizing or at least morally questionable?
      Besides Bert Herbert's case, the game does cover what you talked about. That's the personality meter. Deplete it and you've removed the person's peesonality during treatment. It is a good message about treating mental health without getting rid of everything the person is.

One of the issues is that if a person is not aware of their delusions or hallucinations, they will push away their social structure or outright deny their support. It's why mentals disorders characterized by delusions and/or hallucinations are so important to treat early. She’s satisfied and happy being a cyborg, she isn’t harming anyone, it’s her body, and yet she is labeled as dangerous and mentally ill by the system when she’s clearly a very chill and reasonable person when you actually speak to her.

      Are you sure? As far as I could tell, the brain scanner didn't do the job all on its own, but also relied on the player to input the key words. • @thlayliroo
      @thlayliroo 3 роки тому +13

      @@dronnoh yeah crystiine was tricky for me. tone of voice is vital for context and tone is infamously difficult to read from text alone. her pamphlet sent mixed signals between coexistence and conversion, and we don't truly know what she meant by "interesting ideas" or the "plain-skin problem". it was vague enough that she could've meant something on a more individual level rather than "non-cyborgs are bad". the note from her follower made it hard to tell if 'plain-skin' is meant as a derogatory term for non-cyborgs, slang for anti-cyborgs (cyborgphobes?), or both. and like you said, she could very well be out to forcefully convert everyone into cyborgs and fully believe it's an act of "love and understanding", and for the greater good.
      also to me it seems like the machine gives readings for you to interpret and then outputs an informal diagnosis based on your interpretations, so overall you're doing the diagnosing. that said i have no clue if the diagnosis changes if you choose different things lol.

      Depends on how well you do during the curing! I see it as removing the small, maladaptive portion of their personality that represents self-destructive behaviors/attitudes/coping mechanisms… provided you’re careful to *only* remove the unhealthy portions. Then the patient can regain “personality” as they put their life back together and start regaining hobbies/friendships/etc. :) Mark’s right, though: the key while playing is to balance patient safety and income. There are ways to protect/restore their damaged personality, but it takes longer… and it doesn’t work if the personality is burnt out completely. But if you get exiled, you won’t be able to help ANY patients. And who knows if the scanner who replaces you will actually *care* about their well-being!
      (It’s actually pretty accurate to how real treatment and overall mental health works! Like… yes, helping others is good. But you put on your own oxygen mask/etc. first for a reason!! And yes, meds such as anti-depressants will “change” you, but they don’t brainwash you… they just give you the means/energy to break yourself free and regain the life mental illness has cost you. To separate pain from personality. At the same time, you can’t safely rely on pills to keep you functional without ever confronting the situation that pushed you to them in the first place. At best that’s just plucking weeds and leaving the roots behind to regrow! Assuming your condition isn’t permanent, obviously... My ADHD certainly isn’t going anywhere, so neither’s the Adderall!… Balance in all things. Plus… rushing a recovery of any kind usually just hurts you worse, doesn’t it?)

    This game kind of reminds me of this book I read called "The Program" its about a dystopian future where most of the population has been killed off from suicide. In the book, if you showed signs of depression, you would be taken to "the program" where they fixed you. It was a pretty good book, I know it's a series, but I never got around to reading the rest
