The best part of this backrooms level is the use of the color yellow. I did a paper on the psychological effects of yellow (along with the irony of yellow being used in some of the most scary horror movies) and it is psychologically proven that too much yellow can cause anxiety and fear.

    • @Tasteful_Milk

So the backrooms itself originated like 1 or 2+ years ago and has an ENTIRE connected cosmology and an entire area that creates new rooms, entities, communities, security levels, etc. (A lot like SCP files) While Kane’s videos are taking the original level (level 0) and is creating his own connected world around that one specific level. Both are insanely well made and can get you caught up in the lore and it’s all so interesting
If you want to learn more about the original backrooms and it’s lore then I recommend checking out either “Backrooms Explained” or “Broogli” as they both make videos dedicated to specific levels and entities in the backrooms that are very in depth and well made

Also, Kane's gonna be directing a Backrooms movie about his own UA-cam series, developed by A24, the studio that made the amazing film "Everything Everywhere All At Once". Something the Backrooms really remind of is a pitcher plant - it's a passive carnivorous plant that has naturally smooth sides, so when a bug attracted by the sweet smell it emits slips and falls into the water/digestive juices inside it, the bug can't climb out until it drowns or is dissolved. The damp floors and the rooms' nature of trapping people who aren't careful enough really remind me of it.
Plus, several types of critters that can't be trapped by pitcher plants will check out pitch plants while foraging and steal a free meal from what gets trapped in them. The monsters could either be part of the pitcher plant or these opportunistic animals that steal from pitcher plants.

"Clipping" in video games is when two objects in the game collide in a faulty way. Clipping through things is abusing the faulty collision to push yourself into areas that you shouldn't be able to access that way. No-Clip mode is a debug mode that stops clipping from happening by turning off all collision detection, letting you walk through walls.

The monster took the tripod and constructed it's body with it. It then used the camera as it's head to spot people with it. That's the reason why there is written on the wall 'don't move. Stay still.' because the monster uses the camera to spot you.

I wonder if they saw the most recent episode! My very unnecessary interpretation of this series is about its focus on ‘commercial spaces’. Nowadays we often ascribe value to places and that’s what Async tried to do by taking over the back rooms and transforming them into a commercial space. But when places that we deem “commercial” are empty they no longer serve their purpose and feel almost wrong- that’s why they seem so creepy. I like Chelsea’s idea that the monster is made up of the tripods and the time distortion theory because it would mean that in trying to create more commercial spaces (space with VALUE), they accidentally created something dreadful that essentially renders the back rooms useless (like climate change). I also thought the weird tree room sort of reminded me of deforestation? The imagery of a frontier home with axes and wheelbarrows denotes colonization etc. Anyway, beyond all that the videos were just creepy in general! Kane really nailed the aesthetic of liminal spaces.

I think if you keep doing this type of horror “Mandela Catalog” is an amazing analog horror that the creator of is Alex Kister made on his phone.
The story is about a random “alien” taking the place of a angle and can adjust to how humans move, interact, speaking, etc.

A short and very over-essentializing TLDR of the New Weird James talked about for whoever is interested.
It's essentially the 21st century version of the Weird (Lovecraft) which uses the monstrous and weird nature to explore and discuss contemporary issues such as climate change. Things like Annihiliation, and actually most of Jeff Vandermeers work. It differentiates itself from lovecraft/old weird by embracing the monstrous and weird.
I'm by no means an expert and it's a very complicated part of narrative studies but I did use it in some research last year

Liminal spaces are so casually prominent in horror to the point where you don't really think about them. Some examples off the top of my head are the house in the middle of the night in Sinister, the cabin in The Lodge, the store in Bad Man by Dathan Auerbach, and the entirety of I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid. But when you wanna focus specifically on a liminal location, more often than not it falls flat -- speaking as someone who reads more horror literature than watches horror movies. But Kane has been consistently incredible and he deserves every bit of praise that you and everyone else is giving him.
I'm sure Pitfalls played around with the other existing Backrooms levels -- last I checked there were over 4000 -- but the blue room with the street signs reminded me of dreamcore stuff, which is kind of like an equally weird but less intentionally scary liminal space offshoot. Whatever his intention, I'm looking forward to seeing Kane expand on this lore and all these weirdass places lol
