  • Firefighters are known for running toward danger when most run away from it.
They see people in their darkest moments. They help people who have no one and nowhere to go. They see the things most people never have -- or will.
Many firefighters live daily with post-traumatic stress disorder -- and many don't talk about it, often with deadly consequences. Post-traumatic stress disorder develops in some people who have experienced shocking or dangerous events.
More firefighters died by suicide than in the line of duty last year, according to a study released this past April by the Ruderman Family Foundation. The foundation is a private, philanthropic foundation started in 2002.
Little has been done to address the problem, despite the fact that firefighters are five times more likely than the average person to suffer from PTSD and depression, according to the Ruderman Family Foundation's study.

I was that tough firefighter in my department. 30 years on the job seeing things I will never forget. My family would tell me that I had changed in my personality but I could never see it. My marriage began to fall apart to the point my wife moved out. Before she left she suggested I seek help. So I did and boy am I glad I took her advice. The guys and gals at work stated they had noticed a difference in my attitude but were afraid to say anything. Since going to therapy they now say I am almost back to my normal self. Yes I still struggle at times but therapy does help. The best advice I gave my coworkers and will give anyone in the fire service is, yes we are the big bad firefighters but even the big bad firefighter needs help sometimes. I have now learned that several of my coworkers have since went to counseling. If I helped to save one life it was all worth it

I have been a firefighter for 50 years and was a former fire captain.I have seen a lot within those 50 years.Today I am working in the capacity as an incident safety officer. Our fire dept also responds to suicides. One of the most unpleasent suicides we responded to was for a teenage girl that hanged herself

You are not a coward if you go for help when you are feeling PTSD symtoms. You are not under General George Patton with his hard boiled attitude when he slapped that soldier who may have been dealing with PTSD
