I didn't think Timelash was that bad to be fair. Warriors of the deep however ... That said even warriors had potential as a fair to middling base under siege story, but arguably has the worst ever monster in the Myrka; a monster so feeble that slowly ambling away would be enough to escape
Troughton had his fair share of bad stories, but a lot of them are rather forgettable- they badly overused the "isolated base under siege" plot and some were just ridiculous (e.g The Underwater Menace). People don't tend to remember the First and Second Doctor serials unless they were really good, though, so they don't tend to wind up on "Worst" lists like this, unlike poor Colin Baker's tenure.
It was an absolutely brilliant idea in concept and Colin's monologue on the Timelords' corruption and abuse of power was beautifully written and equally beautifully performed. It would have been Robert Holmes' crowning achievement in Doctor Who, had he not tragically died before finishing it causing the ending to be utterly ruined, and also had the individual stories which he did not write had been better. I would have preferred starting the season off with the Trial, but then getting on to the regular adventures and not mentioning the trial again until the season finale, at which point the trial would draw evidence from various things in the previous stories both from this season and throughout the show's history.
I also love the idea of the Valeyard, and I really wish David Tennant could return to play the DoctorDonna gone rogue as a sort of prequel to becoming the Valeyard.
Trial was not perfect but was hardly one of the worst stories overall. I a disagree with the criticism about the changing of the charge made against the Doctor at the end of part 12. This is an alien race after all and not human, so their laws and practices are different. They perhaps could change the charge made if due cause was found to do so.
SamyulDavis I want them to return, Big Finish has done some brilliant pure historicals like The Marian Conspiracy, The Peterloo Massacre and Wrath Of The Iceni
Wow. Black Orchid is literally my favourite Peter Davison story and one of the best Doctor Who episodes of all time. It just has such a great, simple, slightly cheesy atmosphere but in my opinion that was the biggest charm of this story! You'd expect there to be some alien threat, or the Master appearing after being mentioned in the beginning of the episode, but it was just a simple down-to-Earth drama and I loved that plot twist! Every time I watch it I get such a kick out of the quirky cricket scene (I'm not from an Anglophone country so I had never seen cricket before) and just... EVERYTHING looks fantastically appealing, homey and nostalgic in that episode. But that's just me. Yeah, I'd agree with most of the Day of the Daleks arguments, but I thought that the Special Effects were pretty good for the time. Then again, I'm easily impressed with that kind of stuff. Yeah, the Silver Nemesis was a bit jumbled up and it felt awkward how they left so many loose threads. Also the Cybermen felt overly comical in this episode, which doesn't work in this particular instance. "Is this human madness?" Leisure Hive - yeah, it was boring and not the best. You forgot to mention the fact that K-9 got wrecked in the beginning in the most brutally and emotionally crushing way possible. I was so mad then. Thank God he came back in the very next episode. Timelash - I actually find it pretty enjoyable. I'd say that it's way better than the Revelation of the Daleks. Timelash isn't great by any stretch of the imagination, but I myself would never say that it's bad. But I really can't say what it is that I think is good in this story. Timeflight - Yeah, it was really underwhelming. Also it was an Arabian fat guy. I wouldn't say it was racist, cause his skin was literally made out of blue clay. The Time Monster - Totally agree. The only point to this episode is to provide us with the Brigadier saying "tit". Underworld - Again, I concur 100%. That was one forgettable story. K-9 was cute when he piloted the ship, though. Then again, it's K-9, you can't expect less from him. Trial of the Timelord - I think it was quite a brave experiment for the time because it steered away from a changed format of Season 22 to another format that's closer to the original, but still different. I felt that it was great and loved the court stuff, and even though a lot of stuff was left unexplained and the Valeyard hasn't come back yet, I still really enjoy it, particularly the Terror of the Vervoids and the Ultimate Foe. I only wish that Mel didn't exist and that the Ultimate Foe was longer. Warriors of the Deep - it's a really weird story. Honestly can't quite wrap my mind around it :P Again, not shitting on your opinions, just letting out mine.
One thing I WILL say for Black Orchid. When Tegan leaves at the end of that foul Dalek Story, she says "It's stopped being fun". WHEN WAS IT EVER FUN??? Black Orchid at least shows us the characters having fun in episode one. Cricket, dancing, playing with your double (who's called a Child despite being a fiance, disturbingly) and eating piles of food. This is the only time we see them having fun. Ever. It's the one thing in Black Orchid's favour to my eyes.
Alun Rundle I agree. What I enjoyed most about Black Orcid was just seeing the team have fun. So rarely do we ever get to see the Doctor and his companions just simply having fun. Most episodes start with them saying they are going to do something fun, and then... "Doctor, this doesn't look like [insert fun location here]"
@ Alun, Child like a lot of words changes meaning over time. It once could refer to a person below the age of majority, which in 1920s UK was 21. Not sure if Ann's age is given in the story but she looked about 20. The same reason Hartnell's doctor used to refer to Susan and Vicki as child. And yes, Black Orchid is a good story.
@@user-sd7qo7qe4v It could have been but the money obviously wasn't there for special effects and it was a story reliant on special effects. The station's 'POW' guns, the Dalek Helmets, the cheap sets.... Incidentally, watch the scene with the Dalek mutant in the warehouse again. Note that, whilst the Doctor has a pistol in hand, he NEVER FIRES.
I just love that my guiltiest Of pleasures, “The Gunfighters”, wasn’t mentioned here or on any other worst lists I’ve seen lately. Haha Great video mate!
Patrick Hughes......... J N T was around for Tom Baker's tail end Peter Davison, Colin Baker, n Sylvester McCoy some of my most popular doctors. But then again I'm a child of the 8o's
scott--vs-the-world Well... Underworld still exists. Also Mark of the Rani was WAY worse than Time. Bad, over the top acting, ludicrous action scenes and it feels like the writer here is a physical humor wannabe.
@@alexzander4426 I got the DVD for Mark along with 8 or 9 more and it the only one I havent watched the special features for.... top contender for the worst episode ever
7:32 Even though Tom Baker is my favourite Doctor, I didn't really care much for his costume in Season 18. While I would have preferred to have seen the originally planned Season 23 before Doctor Who was put on a hiatus in 1985, I actually didn't mind "The Trial of a Time Lord". But that's just my opinion.
Well, it appears you and I have very different tastes... Particularly, "The Trial of a Time Lord", for it is my 7th favourite story of all time. Good video though.
If you want an episode that's hurt by it's budget then look no further than Destiny of the Daleks. Holy crap, that episode looks like it was made on a budget of 10p! If you want some indication as to how bad the production values are, look no further than Davros. They used the same mask that they did for Michael Wisher but they put it on David Gooderson and it clearly didn't fit him. That and it has major continuity issues such as Romana's regeneration and making the Daleks robots (which is doubly insulting when you realise that Terry Nation himself wrote this). Seriously, this episode makes Day of the Daleks look expensive
Look closely when Davros is moving in some shots, you can clearly see David Gooderson moving his legs so fast and his torso shaking like crazy. Hell in one shot a Dalek lifts its upper casing before moving. Like you could see the actor lifting it up and then quickly putting it back down. It’s like an after school doctor who play.
Actually the fault of the writing for destiny is not Terry Nations. It was Douglas Adams. He almost completely re-wrote Nations original script for the story to the point where it shouldn’t even say written by Terry Nation. So it’s actually his fault for causing the continuity issues. It’s also the BBCs fault for not getting several more editors to check the script. Xx
What about stories like "Paradise Towers" and "The Happiness Patrol" when Doctor Who had essentially become a parody of itself? They were absolutely friggin' awful!
It is delightfully kitsch, in my opinion. Ben has chemistry with the Moth Queen! How fun is that! One of the enemies is woodlice that shoot laser beams that sound like the opening to Chesney Hawke's I Am the One And Only. The costumes are great for the time, and the caveman caterpillars were great, thematically speaking. The villain SPOILERS turns out to be using a bright light, making the internet gag decades older than I anticipated. In short, it's great, with some of the only flaws I'll agree to being it's a bit too long, and the party being split makes for too many plotlines to be resolved. (Although it gets my respect for ending in a satisfying way.) ~ TDG
10. The Horns of Nimon 9. Four to Doomsday 8. invasion of the Dinosaurs 7. The King's Demons 6. Dragonfire 5. Warriors of the Deep 4. Time-Flight 3. The Twin Dilemma 2. Time and the Rani 1. Timelash 40 of the bottom 100 are classic serials. Your presentation was distressing to watch. To quote you - "painful, borning and ridiculous".
Invasion Of The Dinosaurs is a decent story sabotaged by terrible special effects. Horns Of The Nimon is top entertainment with one of teh greatest ham performances by a guest actor in the history of Dr Who. Otherwise hard to disagree with your list.
Have to disagree over the Leisure Hive. First time I hated it, second time I liked it and third time I loved it. I think it definitely feels like a necessary breath of fresh air that the show needed as the second half of the Tom Baker era seemed to run out of steam for me, verging into silliness in series 17.
17:37 I was crying! Great list, I am really happy Day of the Daleks is on this list, it is so overrated and I dont know why. One thing I do disagree with is The Trial of a Time Lord, I do agree with your points, but I think it's a big chunk of fun, but that's your opinion. Great list, I think you are so funny! :)
Its my 3rd favorite out of all his stories, followed by the Terror of the Vervoids segment of The Trial of a Time Lord (not sure if thats bad or not, probably is)
I have a soft spot for The Time Monster, if only for Pertwee's Daisiest Daisy speech, as it's my favorite performance of his and probably one of my favorite Doctor Who moments ever.
I'm really excited because you included two of my Classic Series guilty pleasures on this list: Underworld and my guiltiest pleasure of them all, The time monster. I've got some friends who like low budget crappy-ish scifi and I've talked to them a lot about Kronos, prfo. Thaskalos and TOMTIT jaja. And there are a few memorable moments, such as the first mention to K'anpo Rimpoche, some Jo Grant and Master scenes and naked Benton to name a few. I'd liked you included some First and Second Doctor (The Gunfighters or The Dominators?) stories since I haven't watched 5, 6 and 7 eras yet.
I agree with a lot of what you say. In particular I agree about the brightness of the lighting in the 80's. If your production values aren't too great then bright lighting is your enemy. Also, if your production values aren't too great, then full-shot, brightly lit depictions of monsters isn't going to work. Imagine if the Merka (spelling?) had just been a tentacle winding around a throat in dimly-lit close-up
The Time Monster isn't great over all, but it has some really good moments. Namely, when the Doctor and Jo are captured and the Doctor tells her about the worst day of his life, and then the climax with the time ram.
Discovered you today. You're funny and you talk about my favorite thing ever, Classic Who. I own it all on DVD. I started collecting back in 2012. I pick a story from time to time and rewatch it. I've probably seen Genesis of the Daleks the most. Followed by Pyramids of Mars.
The Ambassadors Of Death, Ghost Light, The Mind Of Evil, The Awakening, The Mutants, The Horns Of The Nimon, The Creature From The Pit, Planet Of The Giants, The Krotons & The Gunfighters.
If, when watching any 7th Doctor story, you think "This needed another episode" odds are they were forced to cut about an episodes worth of material. When asked about the literal cliff hanger at the end of Dragonfire, the writer said that it made sense in the script he wrote. Apparently, a scene that explained everything was cut...
1. Black Orchid. 2. Day of the Daleks. 3. Silver Nemesis. 4. The Leisure Hive. 5. Timelash. 6. Time Flight. 7. The Time Monster. 8. Underworld. 9. The Trial of a Timelord (all of it). 10.Warriors of the Deep.
Great video. I agree with your choices, with maybe the exception of day of the Daleks. though that's because of the remastered version on the DVD which has Nick Briggs voicing the Daleks and the effects updated, making the story more watchable. Since you didn't mention it, have you seen it?
Brandon Hudson I have seen it yeah, got the DVD. It's definitely better than the standard version visually but the story itself is still a let down to me
Never understood the argument about there "only" being 3 Daleks at the end of Day of the Daleks. They're only going to kill one man, 3 Daleks is more than enough. It's not an invasion.
I liked Black Orchid. It was one of the classic Peter Davidson stories. He has a time machine. Not every story has to revolve around aliens. The format of the show lends itself to change styles and stories which keeps it fresh.
The worst with these serials really has to go to the ones that just bore. A terrible costume or alien can be endearing whilst the greatest 8 parter is not. I oddly really dislike Robot, bad start to a great tenure. Also Attack of the Cybermen and early 7 more out of resentment for how badly they were wasting their lead actors. (As proven by Big Finish)
I have to admit up front that I haven't watched most of classic Who for about twenty years, but the lack of mention of one particular story in the video or in any of the comments surprises me. Did The Horns of Nimon get a pass as a "so bad, it's good" entry? Or was it better than I remember?
Did you just give a free pass to the entire Hartnell & Troughton eras?! 'The Gunfighters' is by far the very worst story of the entire Classic Who. I dare you to defend it!
I love the Courtroom scenes on Trial of a Timelord. Yes, they bring down the pace and are not that great but I'm a sucker for people shouting legal jargon in courtrooms, specially if it involves space politics.
While I can totally see why you and others dislike it, I really enjoyed Trial of a Timelord and it is one of my favourite seasons of Classic Doctor Who. My least favourite classic series episode would probably either be The Armageddon Factor or Attack of the Cybermen.
Apologies if this point was made, but I believe that The Twin Dilemma was actually the final story of Davidson last season... ruining the effect of what should have been the perfect end of his season AND era: Caves of Androzanni. So Colin Baker actually had 2 seasons + one story.
The underlying fact that runs throughout this Top (bottom) 10 video, is the show suffered enormously with John Nathan-Turners interference with an established format that was working fairly well. He reminds me of Andy from Toy Story playing with his toys, and making up little scenarios for them. Sadly, Andy had a far more fertile and creative mind.
It really depends on your age and weather or not you were actually alive and watching in the 70s and 80s as to what you feel the worst would be. For instance, you mention the bad effects on "Timelash" that you could do yourself. Back when that first aired in the mid 80's, if you had been around then like me, you would have thought it was awesome. Not to mention, you wouldn't have been able to do it yourself. No PC's and software for home use existed back then. As someone who grew up in the 70s and 80s watching back then, I do agree with maybe half your list though.
Here are my 10 worst Doctor Who Stories The Dominators (So boring and so stupid) The Space Pirates (The fact that episodes 1 and 3-6 are missing really hurt this) Underworld (The blue screen was so bad it gave me a headache) Time-Flight (I have no idea what was even happening for half the episode) The Twin Dilemma (Do I even need to explain this one?) Attack of the Cybermen (This episode was a mess) Timelash (Terrible) Time and the Rani (The worst one, IMO) Paradise Towers (An alright story with awful acting) Delta and the Bannermen (The Bannermen are the worst antagonists in Doctor Who, IMO)
It was like a weird dream but it wasn't bad at all. It was quite strange and probably required two or three rewatches but it was weirdly good if you know what i mean.
Dishonorable mentions: The Web Planet Four to Doomsday Underworld The Dominators Meglos The Twin Dilemma The Underwater Menace The Invisible Enemy Mark of the Rani Time and the Rani
Honestly, I enjoyed Time-Flight. My mum had the novelisation, which I read over and over when I was a kid and loved. This did mean I had to consciously delete the grandiose images in my head of the story before watching it, but it looked worse than I had imagined. I did really enjoy it though - I guess I just love watching the show camp it up (especially Ainley's spectacular scenery chewing in this story. He's not my favourite Master, but Ainley was my first Master so I still love watching him camp it up). If only they had just a little bit more money... Oh, and I believe _Resurrection of the Daleks_ has passed on into being iconic, if only because of its gratuitous violence for the time.
I absolutely love "Warriors Of The Deep" - genuinely one of my favourite episodes ever. I also really like "Trial Of A Timelord" and "Timelash"... I'm fully aware they're total shit - but for some reason I find myself watching them over and over again! Anyway, love love love your style of video! Great to see a Who fan not biased towards the new or classic series, but treating it all as the same canon :) My worst classic episodes would be: 10. Dragonfire 9. An Unearthly Child (except for part 1, obviously) 8. Revenge Of The Cybermen 7. Four To Doomsday 6. Paradise Towers 5. Death To The Daleks 4. The Web Planet 3. The TV Movie 2. The Dominators (jesus christ, make it stop!) 1. Delta & The Bannermen (genuinely can't believe this wasn't on your list!)
It's like I said in the video, some of my choices aren't just flat out shit but just massive let downs. I was well aware McCoys first season wasn't highly rated before I saw it so that's why I didn't include any of it. It is crap though on the whole. I quite like a few of the ones you chose but then again, the world would be boring if everyone agreed on everything!
Precisely! My favourite episode of all time is "The Moonbase". Variety is the spice of life eh? Anyway, you've gained yourself a subscriber, sir! Now excuse me whilst I binge all your videos! XD
Lawrence STALBOW-BEST I remember being quite moved by the end of Warriors of the Deep when they try to save at least one sea devil or silurian but everybody dead. I also think the cliffhanger to episode 1 is pretty good. Shame about Dobbin
I'm surprised by the exclusion of Invasion of Time. It has some moments, but the highlight is still a Sontaran being eaten by a plant. The monsters are set up in a mysterious way, with the backs of some chairs, but having the main monsters stay as "shimmering shapes" (ie, plastic wrap being wiggled when they are supposed to talk) for the first few episodes was a huge disappointment, and when they finally appeared they're just some dudes in jumpsuits. They are defeated easily, and then the Sontarans come in. They're not much better, Stor in particular being very nonthreatening at all. The last few episodes turn into a giant chase through the TARDIS corridors that looked like disused stairwells in an elementary school. And then the Doctor puts a key in a gun an blows them all to hell. And then Leela just suddenly falls in love with a Time Lord who tried to kill the Doctor in the last 5 minutes and stays on Gallifrey, K-9 staying with. It's just boring. P.S.: Why do all the bad classic stories have the word "Time" in their name? P.P.S. :Why is it called the Invasion of Time. Gallifrey was invaded. The TARDIS was invaded. Time wasn't.
I found that Black Orchid taught me (as a child) a valuable life lesson. One that anyone could do worse than to learn. Namely, that there can be smoke without fire.
Let down is a good description for Warrior's. Do you think for the Blu-ray release, they might upgrade the CGI for the Myrka, reduce the lighting, or maybe just edit the whole story to make it work better?
One of my biggest mistakes was choosing Warriors of the Deep as my first Fifth Doctor story. Thankfully, Four to Doomsday and The Visitation got the bad taste out of my mouth. Anyway, here's my list: 10. The Web Planet 9. Planet of the Daleks 8. The Monster of Peladon 7. Revenge of the Cybermen 6. Time and the Rani 5. The Twin Dilemma 4. The Ribos Operation 3. The Claws of Axos 2. Warriors of the Deep 1. The Time Monster
Space Museum, Time Monster, Monster of Peladon, Underworld, Armageddon Factor, Leisure Hive, Warriors Gate, Castrovalva, Warriors of the Deep, Twin Dilemma. And Day of the Daleks is very good; excellent first episode. In fact perhaps my 3rd favourite first episode in all of classic Who, right behind Invasion of the Dinosaurs and Death to the Daleks.
I actually like all of these except day of the daleks, and warriors of the deep, those two aren't very good, but the rest I liked, my list would be very different (they are in order from watchable to plain awful) 10: the king's demons 9: colony in space 8: underworld 7: the Dominators 6: the smugglers 5: the power of kroll 4: the awakening 3: the mutants 2: the twin dilemma 1: paradise towers
Season 23 was originally composed of standalone stories that would have seen the return of the Autons and Ice Warriors. Plus it would have had a story set in Hong Kong. However, the BBC received too many complaints regarding the violence of the previous series, and so discarded the scripts in favour of Trial of a Timelord story arc, and opted to focus on light humour. Also the model of the space station in the opening was sadly lost in a fire.
On a side note, look - it's not ILM level special effects, but if you buy the Day of the Daleks DVD, there's a redoing that is awesome! First off, they digitally redid a bunch of the special effects, and they did a halfway decent job. Better yet, the modern guy who does the dalek voices (who I totally know, but am just blanking on right now), has redone all the Dalek voices in the epp. Seriously, the epp is much better with all these fixes. By the way, Silver Nemesis is, indeed, god awful
Nope. Nope. You are right. Warriors of the Deep. I forgot Warriors of the deep. To add a few things that you didn't have time to mention: THE LIGHTING IS HORRIFIC!!!! Worst lighting ever. And then, um, that one chick literally tries to karate chop the shit Merka! What????? It is awful. I agree with everything you siad about it.
I think that the "Mindwarp" part of Trial could have done really well as a stand alone story. Especially if Peri still died at the end. It would have set up a very nasty reunion with the Doctor and Sil in a later story as well. And it could have gone down as one of the greatest episodes in Doctor Who history.
I'm so glad that Nicholas Briggs provided the Dalek voices in the special edition of 'Day of the Daleks'. I agree that they really didn't need to be in it though.
leisure hive had some really good moments example: "arrest the scarf then" and the moment when the doctor says "there are two unauthorised visitors on the premise's..." and it may just be me but I'm never bored watching it
I have just started watching classic Doctor who and have had trouble staying awake watching the 6 episodes of the web planet! I hope no other is like this!!!
there are a few, 2nds final story is 10 parts, I personally think they could have lost 4 of them. Most are 4-6 parts and most of the time they breeze through. Web planet was NOT a good choice though there are far better
Edge of Destruction was just really unsatisfying. Throughout the whole thing it's ramping up the tension, keeping you guessing about why the Tardis is off-course and thinking over the possibility of some sort of entity having infected one of the companions. But then it turns out that it was all because of a loose spring behind one of the buttons on the control panel. I honestly laughed out loud when I first saw it, it was as if the writer couldn't think of any cool sci-fi explanation so he just wrote that in so he could be done with it and collect his paycheck.
WoTD is fine with me. That ending was sad and so Davison . Yes it could have been great but it is still a good yarn. Twin Dilemma however is atrocious. The rest of the season was too notch esp. Frontios and The Awakening and Planet of Fire.
all the doctors have post regeneration confusion, C Bakers was the worst of the classic doctors considering the fact 5th didnt think he was going to make it this time, much like 11th to 12th and how violent HIS regeneration was
Great list alex! I have a question for you. What do you think of Kinda? Personally, I really like it but I hear some people saying it's mediocre at best. What do you think?
Wingy Media you should do a top 5 best stories for each doctor. For example you do a top 5 for william hartnell, then one for Troughton, then one for pertwee. So on so fourth
That's why I much prefer the recut of Day of the Daleks from the second disc of that set, as their recut extended/special edition makes it a much more fun story. (Plus they got Nick Briggs in to redub those AWFUL Dalek voices from the broadcast version and that alone makes it a TON better right off the bat!)
Yep mostly agree although Trial should be seen as separate stories. Each segment had different writers, directors, music, etc. I do think Time and the Rani should be on the list too and what about one or two from Season 17?
Wingy: “Number Ten Black Orchid”

Yeah, the Silver Nemesis was a bit jumbled up and it felt awkward how they left so many loose threads. Also the Cybermen felt overly comical in this episode, which doesn't work in this particular instance. "Is this human madness?"
Leisure Hive - yeah, it was boring and not the best.
Honestly can't quite wrap my mind around it :P
Again, not shitting on your opinions, just letting out mine.
Resurrection of the Daleks was great!
Nah.
A good half of Trial is great, and it never really dips below mediocrity.
And Day, in bottom 10? Whatever.
I agree
I just love that my guiltiest Of pleasures, “The Gunfighters”, wasn’t mentioned here or on any other worst lists I’ve seen lately. Haha
Great video mate!
I can't believe "The Twin Dilemma" isn't on this list, especially with the choking scene..."
I bought the five doctors today, and watched it and it turns out someone had put The Lesiure Hive into the wrong box. Gutted
So you dodged a bullet but then got hit by a train.
nearly all these stories have one thing in common, J. N. T.
Rossm3838 Don’t say that JNT was an awesome show runner
Patrick Hughes......... J N T was around for Tom Baker's tail end Peter Davison, Colin Baker, n Sylvester McCoy some of my most popular doctors. But then again I'm a child of the 8o's
Yea, JNT really fucked up the show.
Something fierce - Not really , he was behind 3 of the great Doctors and producer over some awesome stories of the 80's
Let's be honest, all the doctors were "the great Doctors"
4 words. Time and the Rani. Worst doctor who story ever.
scott--vs-the-world Well...
The Kandyman Really? Ouch. I liked the vibe it gave and I don’t think anything is worse than “Underworld.”
@@alexzander4426 yeah it's pretty bad, got it over a year ago and still haven't re-watched it
The Kandyman I wish I could re-watch it. Remember seeing it during one of the DW live streams on Twitch and loved the 80’s vibe and charm.
Yeah I agree with you I liked the Nightmare of eden version of Tom's costume
Big Finish remade them into audios
Well, it appears you and I have very different tastes... Particularly, "The Trial of a Time Lord", for it is my 7th favourite story of all time. Good video though.
Day of the Daleks? For worst stories? It's one of the best Pertwee stories.
ADarthTokuDalek Its like Terminator...in a way
The remastered version is good. The original...ehhh. Those Dalek voices.
day of the daleks is absolute wank!
I agree the Special is a bit better
I really like it as well.
I agree making the Daleks robots in this story was a huge mistake and one they promptly forgot about in later Dalek stories thank God!!
Well the daleks were in a very long war. So their battered look kind of works.
but the Movellans are cool tho
Actually the fault of the writing for destiny is not Terry Nations.
It was Douglas Adams.
He almost completely re-wrote Nations original script for the story to the point where it shouldn’t even say written by Terry Nation.
So it’s actually his fault for causing the continuity issues.
It’s also the BBCs fault for not getting several more editors to check the script. Xx
The dalek from the day of the daleks sounds like my principal lol
Wingy, I really love your turn of phrase. I was laughing my head off towards the end.
What about stories like "Paradise Towers" and "The Happiness Patrol" when Doctor Who had essentially become a parody of itself? They were absolutely friggin' awful!
Yeah... McCoy's 1st season was bed except for Time & the Rani, which is saying something. It became a true kids show.
My Bottom 10 would include Inferno, Happiness Patrol, Planet of the Giants,
The Web Planet should have been on here
6 episodes of BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ
How Do I Make A Username? Love the Web Planet :O
How Do I Make A Username? I agree, I think it is the worst episode of the Hartnell era, it is kind of boring which isn't good
only good thing was zarpi
(Although it gets my respect for ending in a satisfying way.)
~ TDG
*THUD* (Zarbi Hits Camera) I still haven't seen it and I'm going to hold out on getting the DVD for a while
"It wouldn't be a worst Doctor Who list without a Colin Baker story, would it?" That hurts, man. That hurts.
10. The Horns of Nimon
9. Four to Doomsday
8. invasion of the Dinosaurs
7. The King's Demons
6. Dragonfire
5. Warriors of the Deep
4. Time-Flight
3. The Twin Dilemma
2. Time and the Rani
1. Timelash
40 of the bottom 100 are classic serials.
Your presentation was distressing to watch. To quote you - "painful, borning and ridiculous".
Agree on most of these, but would replace 5 and 6 with Battlefield and Delta and the Bannermen.
@@TheZodiacz fair call, sir. Fair call.
Invasion Of The Dinosaurs is a decent story sabotaged by terrible special effects. Horns Of The Nimon is top entertainment with one of teh greatest ham performances by a guest actor in the history of Dr Who. Otherwise hard to disagree with your list.
Wow, a bit harsh
Tom Tit, Tom Thumb's drunk, unsuccessful brother who lives with his parents even though he is 39 years old ;)
You put Day of the Daleks and The Trial of a Time Lord on this list and left out The Gunfighters and Twin Dilemma? What is this heresy?
IKR?!
I quite enjoyed “Revenge of the Cybermen!”
Same, it was my first Tom Baker story
I actually enjoy Black Orchid. But I can see why people don't.
Black orchad is the definition of my guilty pleasure. i don't know why ut I love it so much. but for a lot of the others I agree
Have to disagree over the Leisure Hive. First time I hated it, second time I liked it and third time I loved it. I think it definitely feels like a necessary breath of fresh air that the show needed as the second half of the Tom Baker era seemed to run out of steam for me, verging into silliness in series 17.
Agreed. T Baker's latter half seasons were ok, seemed like he was phoning it in. His last season he didn't want to be there it seems.
The commentary of Time-Flight is absolutely brilliant. You can feel the pain of Peter Davison when he's talking about this disaster of a story.
The Time Travel paradox plot, it was the first time Doctor Who did something like that, and I personally think it's fantastic.
I love Day of The Daleks.... the new version with the added effects.
i live trial of a timelord
I might get some hate for this but i actually like Timelash.
plz dont kill me :'(
Turkey Sandwich - First Class Rebel I love it! Classic!!!!
It's the first classic story I ever bought, yeah it's bad and Colin's worst story, but it's not that bad
Galactic yo yo it's good in fact
I think it's alright. One thing I like is that H.G. Wells gets to be a one-off companion; he was really lovable to watch.
Its my 3rd favorite out of all his stories, followed by the Terror of the Vervoids segment of The Trial of a Time Lord (not sure if thats bad or not, probably is)
the gunfighters with Hartnell is pretty awful.
the story is okay but that f**king song!
Wait really? Shit I bought it yesterday!
I disagree, respectfully. it's great fun, in a Carry On sort of way.
the sensorites is trash
I’m gonna say it:
I LOVE WARRIORS OF THE DEEP
Me too
It's was my first non-pertwee story so I have a bit of a soft spot for it
I agree with a lot of what you say. In particular I agree about the brightness of the lighting in the 80's. If your production values aren't too great then bright lighting is your enemy. Also, if your production values aren't too great, then full-shot, brightly lit depictions of monsters isn't going to work. Imagine if the Merka (spelling?) had just been a tentacle winding around a throat in dimly-lit close-up
Exactly. Hoping the bluray for Season 21 can somehow fix the lighting & Myrka in Warriors story.
CONGRATS ON 1000 SUBS!!!!
Followed by Pyramids of Mars.
you cant actually own all of it unless you have the lost tales on audio, I know, I'm still trying to track a few of them down!
I prefer classic doctor who than the reboot
It isn't a reboot? New Who doesn't restart?
Me too
The Ambassadors Of Death, Ghost Light, The Mind Of Evil, The Awakening, The Mutants, The Horns Of The Nimon, The Creature From The Pit, Planet Of The Giants, The Krotons & The Gunfighters.
It's definitely better than the standard version visually but the story itself is still a let down to me
apparently the budget for warriors of the deep was heavily affected due to margaret thatcher I believe
Trial of a Timelord is 4 distinct stories
Or was it better than I remember?
siekensuu I watched it recently and it's by no means good but it's not terrible either
Keep in mind Colin Baker was a lawyer before he became an actor...
silver nemesis was terrific!!! the Nemesis coming alive is one of the iconic moments in the entire series.
While I can totally see why you and others dislike it, I really enjoyed Trial of a Timelord and it is one of my favourite seasons of Classic Doctor Who.
My least favourite classic series episode would probably either be The Armageddon Factor or Attack of the Cybermen.
MisterPAL Funnily enough that it is my favourite story too
If you don't mind me asking, why do you dislike Attack of the Cybermen
The Vault I could do a double exposure on my 127 brownie box camera. Inside the Timelash is a very detailed set that's filmed terribly.
Warriors Gate is even more confusing and dull than Leisure Hive.
Every cliff hanger of Trial of a Time Lord is just Colin Baker pulling a face.
Have you done a video showing your Doctor Who DVD collection?
Here are my 10 worst Doctor Who Stories
The Dominators (So boring and so stupid)
The Space Pirates (The fact that episodes 1 and 3-6 are missing really hurt this)
Underworld (The blue screen was so bad it gave me a headache)
Time-Flight (I have no idea what was even happening for half the episode)
The Twin Dilemma (Do I even need to explain this one?)
Attack of the Cybermen (This episode was a mess)
Timelash (Terrible)
Time and the Rani (The worst one, IMO)
Paradise Towers (An alright story with awful acting)
Delta and the Bannermen (The Bannermen are the worst antagonists in Doctor Who, IMO)
I didn't like ghost light, it was like a LSD seizure
I love that about it, it's so weird xD
ongodau Earadon I had to watch Ghost Light like a bunch of times before I vaguely knew what was going on , now I quite like it does that make me mad?
It was like a weird dream but it wasn't bad at all. It was quite strange and probably required two or three rewatches but it was weirdly good if you know what i mean.
Dishonorable mentions:
The Web Planet
Four to Doomsday
Underworld
The Dominators
Meglos
The Twin Dilemma
The Underwater Menace
The Invisible Enemy
Mark of the Rani
Time and the Rani
Aw man, I actually Liked Day of the Daleks, It was the Episode that got me into Doctor Who.
Oh, and I believe _Resurrection of the Daleks_ has passed on into being iconic, if only because of its gratuitous violence for the time.
>pure historicals
>trial of a time lord
>bad
wew
I absolutely love "Warriors Of The Deep" - genuinely one of my favourite episodes ever. I also really like "Trial Of A Timelord" and "Timelash"... I'm fully aware they're total shit - but for some reason I find myself watching them over and over again!
Anyway, love love love your style of video! Great to see a Who fan not biased towards the new or classic series, but treating it all as the same canon :)
My worst classic episodes would be:
10. Dragonfire
9. An Unearthly Child (except for part 1, obviously)
8. Revenge Of The Cybermen
7. Four To Doomsday
6. Paradise Towers
5. Death To The Daleks
4. The Web Planet
3. The TV Movie
2. The Dominators (jesus christ, make it stop!)
I liked and subbed great show!
How could you forget the first Doctor in the old West the Ballad alone makes the story one of the very worst Dr. Who atrocities.
6:39
I never made that connection in my brain and was always puzzled as to why the 25th anniversary story was a cyberman story.
Great list! I'd add Twin Dilemma though.
When you did your Colin Baker impersonation from the Trial cliffhangers.....I laughed my ass off.
The Peladon stories have to be the worst. Along with Hartnell's "The Web Planet". "Time And The Rani" is a shocker as well.
One of my biggest mistakes was choosing Warriors of the Deep as my first Fifth Doctor story. Thankfully, Four to Doomsday and The Visitation got the bad taste out of my mouth.
Anyway, here's my list:
10. The Web Planet
9. Planet of the Daleks
8. The Monster of Peladon
7. Revenge of the Cybermen
6. Time and the Rani
5. The Twin Dilemma
4. The Ribos Operation
3. The Claws of Axos
2. Warriors of the Deep
1. The Time Monster
Disagree with Ribos being on any bottom 10 list. Expectation is nil going on because you know you're in for a long haul.
I do love the Time Monster, just for the characterisation. It's just so fun. Campy fun, but fun nevertheless. It always makes me grin.
I actually like all of these except day of the daleks, and warriors of the deep, those two aren't very good, but the rest I liked,
my list would be very different (they are in order from watchable to plain awful)
10: the king's demons
9: colony in space
8: underworld
7: the Dominators
6: the smugglers
5: the power of kroll
4: the awakening
3: the mutants
2: the twin dilemma
1: paradise towers
smugglers is one of the lost stories so I cant comment, otherwise, yeah
I Still haven't seen trial of a timelord to this Day
Day of the Daleks was the first classic story I watched with the Daleks. At that time I remember thinking what was up with their voices.
The cliffhanger in the third episode of Day of the Daleks was bollocks.
MaccamatBux1674 Why?
ADarthTokuDalek It was just an image of the ground, I understand what was intended but it doesn't work. I actually don't mind the story though.
MaccamatBux1674 The Daleks use the Mind Analisys Machine on the Doctor, I thought it worked.
ADarthTokuDalek He is walking with that fella and then spots a floor with checkered patterns and says "Stop! don't Move!" and it ends.
MaccamatBux1674 Uhm, you are thinking of Death to the Daleks.
leisure hive had some really good moments example: "arrest the scarf then" and the moment when the doctor says "there are two unauthorised visitors on the premise's..." and it may just be me but I'm never bored watching it
I have just started watching classic Doctor who and have had trouble staying awake watching the 6 episodes of the web planet! I hope no other is like this!!!
there are a few, 2nds final story is 10 parts, I personally think they could have lost 4 of them. Most are 4-6 parts and most of the time they breeze through. Web planet was NOT a good choice though there are far better
You really never touched on the B&W era. "Gunfighters" and "Edge of Destruction" were pretty awful.
CptColumbo I was expecting Gunfighters to be on here
CptColumbo I like edge of destruction
Edge of Destruction was just really unsatisfying. Throughout the whole thing it's ramping up the tension, keeping you guessing about why the Tardis is off-course and thinking over the possibility of some sort of entity having infected one of the companions. But then it turns out that it was all because of a loose spring behind one of the buttons on the control panel. I honestly laughed out loud when I first saw it, it was as if the writer couldn't think of any cool sci-fi explanation so he just wrote that in so he could be done with it and collect his paycheck.
Most of the Hartnell era was meh, a lot of it would drag on
I like the gunfighters and edge of destruction
Destiny of the Daleks is awful
WoTD is fine with me. That ending was sad and so Davison . Yes it could have been great but it is still a good yarn. Twin Dilemma however is atrocious.
The rest of the season was too notch esp. Frontios and The Awakening and Planet of Fire.
What our your thoughts on The Twin Dilemma, I think its bad but not as bad as people think.
all the doctors have post regeneration confusion, C Bakers was the worst of the classic doctors considering the fact 5th didnt think he was going to make it this time, much like 11th to 12th and how violent HIS regeneration was
Great list alex! I have a question for you. What do you think of Kinda? Personally, I really like it but I hear some people saying it's mediocre at best. What do you think?
George S Kinda is easily one of my favourite 5th Doctor stories!
Wingy Media you should do a top 5 best stories for each doctor. For example you do a top 5 for william hartnell, then one for Troughton, then one for pertwee. So on so fourth
Also I'm trying to watch as many classic who stories, I've just finished the time Warrior
