I loved the 5th doctors original TARDIS Team. Adric being blown up as great as it was definitely left a different dynamic afterwards. 1st time I've also discovered your channel. Subbed. 😊
Thanks for interviewing Mr. Waterhouse and posting this video. I enjoyed watching and listening to it. This happens to be the first of your videos that I've watched. I am subscribing to your channel. Thanks again!
This was great. Adric needs a come back with a real Doctor Who tv series (not the current). He's on my top 3 all time companions of the series. Excellent actor and companion!
@@sg-zd8eb they could wangle an explanation, maybe the Doctor find a way to pluck him of the ship and flings him back to Alzarius a second or so before it hits, some sort of super teleport system as a way to at least save his life in some way😉 and the Doctor land back there through a stray CVE, finding Adric as a high up leader ...
I never liked Adric much as a character and a companion, but Matthew Waterhouse seems really cool and could only work with the material which he was given... Which he did well enough for a young lad who was doing one of his first acting roles, so fair play to him
Another great interview. I was fascinated by Matthew's theory about the BBC production office being the constant throughout the life of the classic series, and so being the core that unified it. Laughed out loud at the "One day you shall subscribe ..." intro.
Great video, guys. I have always been impressed by Matthew Waterhouse in that despite the nastiness associated with the character of Adric he has always been gracious and generous. At around the 60 minute mark they speak about Dark Shadows, and say it wasn't seen in Australia. In fact it was televised in Melbourne at least by HSV7 at 3:30-4:00pm each weekday afternoon to the best of my recollection in 1970 (or perhaps '71).
As a American Doctor Who fan from the 1980s. The Adric character was pretty cool and impressive! As well as such a breath of fresh air compared to previous (or future) companions of the Doctor. Adric was basically a Time Lord in training under the Doctor. A Junior Time Lord. Where other companions could not make heads or tails of the Tardis. Adric was already getting under the hood and tweaking it! The critics of the character just don't get the Adric character and why he was so appealing as character! And sadly BBC returned to old companion format. Of just standing around and saying "Oh my god we're going to crash land." or "What's this planet?" or the tried and true "Doctor your SO brilliant you saved the world again." lol Blessings to you and yours Matthew. And thanks for giving us one of best rememberences of Classic Doctor Who. PS Matthew has without a doubt one of best British accent I've heard in 57 of my life. So clean, sharp, refined and with class! Very cool indeed.
What a lovely, insightful interview. I think the best 1980s seasons are 18 and 19, in which Matthew is indispensable. I loved his performance- and I still do! 👌😁
He's older than me and doing well for a 63 year old. I never got the hate for Adric -- Bonnie Langford I can understand! -- as he seemed to do a good job for a newbie actor. Wonder if he asked to be killed off?
@PaIaeoCIive1684 he didn't ask.. he found out he was leaving after reading a script Peter Davison had or some such thing. He didn't speak to JNT as a result of it... think he also didn't mind leaving per se..just didn't want to be killed off
@@DarrenMHembrowCoach I did read Matthew's autobiography (Blue Box Boy) years ago but had forgotten that. He was an obsessive fan or DW before landing the role, so I'll bet he wanted to be in it for ever. Briefly met him at a convention and we chatted briefly about Adric. Nice guy I recall -- more friendly than Tom Baker who I bumped into as a boy! Thanks.
He was my first Companion when I got into Doctor Who. As a pre teen, I was a great nerd and loved the Space Cadet and Adric looked like it. A lot of hardcore Who Fans HATES Adric but he is my favorite companion. His story of how he got the role of Adric is a story of its own!!! He won’t admit to it nor go in full detail. JNT gave him the job as Adric is because he had the hots for Matthew who was 16-18 years of age. What happened between the two is a big ❓
Wow what an interesting ' chat ' but one thing we never got was Matthew himself you know his ' personal life ' is he married does he have Kids how are they doing Etc etc etc 😢😢
Yes, he has a similar voice and delivery. The interviewer suggested he may have 'lost' a regional accent but Matthew's got a standard southern English middle-class one. Working-class people from down there in Sussex do have a 'country' accent though.
I felt that the Earthshock drama between the 5th Doctor and Adric helped to make up for that. It made their parting for the last time and shaking hands before Adric died alone on the freighter consequently even sadder.
He always comes across with having plenty of insight and enthusiasm and could talk for England! He was let down as he joined in an era that saw the decline of the series with disagreeable JNT decisions; poor scripts; tiny budgets (not the producers fault); flat/basic studio lighting; two story episodes having to be stretched into three and four episodes to save on set building etc. Those were the days of three tv channels and so actors had to take anything; just as well those days are over and there's a greater expanse for not only actors but writers, directors today.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the sub.
Great interview, and great seeing and hearing Matthew. Very interesting stuff. He looks good too. Adric with gray hair. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks. Yes, he is looking great these days.
Adric's death was a most profound sign of how deep the classic Doctor Who in the 80s was prepared to go with its drama.

Bit difficult to do considering he’s dead.

Yeah Matthew does seem very cool.
I like Adric even more after listening to Matthew talk in such a considered manner.
Met him briefly at a Sci Fi convention in London and he's a very pleasant chap. Not a trace of 'affected luvvie' in him.
Glad you enjoyed the interview!

I appreciate how deeply Matthew thinks about any subject, especially his insights into Adric and his backstory

Glad you enjoyed it. Now all we need is the access to the Noonan tapes. One of the most ellusive collections in the history of podcasting. ;)

I thought I heard that you were recording with him in the next couple of weeks… 🤔
Absolutely amazing
Been a big fan of Mr W since a kid.. and could listen to him.talk all day.
Hasn't aged at all (apart from grey hair) lucky guy

Fascinating interview, thankyou very much
Adric was my favourite companion growing up.
cool
Oh Adric, you were my first boyfriend when I was a youngling. Would love to see you return!
Matthew's memoir 'Blue Box Boy' is a fantastic book: funny, candid and a strong contender for greatest non-fiction 'Who' book ever
The clips on youtube of him reading it in a sultry voice give the impression he was groomed by JNT.
I saw him while watching Dr Who on GPB Channel 8.
❤❤❤❤❤ love from Australia.Clay ❤❤ long time ❤ Matthew ❤❤❤❤ but not Canberra sorry Australia
Glad you enjoyed the episode.
I can imagine Matthew Waterhouse is no doubt a fan of classic sci-fi series, Blakes 7 and I suspect he might have got the B7 dvds.
ok
@@AudioSirens Matthew is from what I know a big sci-fi fan

I think it's quite well known that he is married. There is a full documentary on him on the season 19 blueray set.
Mathew kind of sounds like Miles Jupp.

You're right. He does sound similar.
Perhaps Philip was hearing an accent closer to middle class Australian. It's a little more flat and generic to the Aussie ear.
Perhaps I’ll never know…
Booooooom!
Adric lookalike
huh?
Mathew was great with Tom.
Didn't work with Peter

I don't think it was as black and white as that. But yeah, he was definitely better with the fourth Doctor.
Agreed
@@AudioSirens I think that the 4th Doctor somehow had a better understanding of Adric.
But Adric wiped out the Dinosaurs.
As long as he got the job done right.
Even as a child i cheered when he died as i found him whiney and annoying.
Harsh

I don't think quantity necessarily equals quality. I tend to prefer television from the 80s over today any day.
