Okay so UA-cam removed the dislike button. So here is a comment to interact with for you to post your grievances and dislikes. I believe in being as clear to everyone as possible
Yeah I have a feeling someone will take advantage of this situation and just make some very Negative based content that will put the lack of a Dislike button to question, heck just anything really that bad will likely make UA-cam reverse their bad decision.
When I was a kid and I first went from jak 1 to jak 2, I honestly didn't notice the change in gameplay. I felt as if the story was kinda logical. I mean, think about it. The past is supposed to be pure and more in tune with nature, which means people would naturally have a higher affinity for wielding eco, so when Praxis learned that Jak, who was from the past would appear, he wanted to test on him. Him being so angry, is NOT a result of being an "angsty" teenager, and I'm a bit upset you said that. It's more, the fact that he, a quiet innocent kid was thrown into a prison, to get experimented on with a highly destructive substance, and turn into a dark eco monster. The torture adds to some PTSD and would make anyone resentful, but the dark eco again being high destructive, would make him even more pissed off during its influence, not to mention in 3 when he gets the light eco, says that the pain feels, "far away" indicating that he was in pain the entire time. I mean, he set out to do what he wanted to do, his first words were, "I'm gonna kill, Praxis!" And well, it... kinda happened. But that still didn't help him. Jak 2 also had him grow up, just like the audience, as I'm sure they were more used to guns and torture and stuff, and while they could make Jak 2 all happy and colorful, it might not sit well with other more adult audiences. Plus, I always felt that while you could tell a good story with Rated E stuff, you could potentially tell a deeper more impactful story with rated T or Rated M stuff, with more adult problems that adults need to face. I mean, the moment when Jak and Daxter realize they're in the future, a dystopian future that was once there home, blew my mind! I mean, how could such a peaceful village turn into... such a dark place? Jak 2 to 3 was also pretty good. I really liked the open world of the wasteland, and as a child, would often make my own stories. I didn't like how the marauders would attack you all the time, but ignoring that. I loved how it built onto the story, now with jak in a way, dealing with his trauma in maybe not a realistic way, with Light Eco being his saving grace. As will a lot of pain, you often need someone, or something, to help you in a healthy way. if they do end up doing a reboot, which, a part of me hopes they don't, as I want a much better conclusion to Jak 3. If they are to reboot it, I would like the guns, the racing, the great exploration, and a good story. If I have to bring it up, Jak the Lost Frontier had aerial battles, which I did enjoy, and I really enjoyed the expansion of eco powers. I would have never thought that green eco which is used for healing could be made as a crystal. Nor could Blue Eco be used as a shield, since Light Eco already had it.
I throughly enjoyed reading your perspective of the Jak and Daxter series. Reminiscing the fun times I've played through with this dynamic duo has always been an experience I will never forget.
Honestly, CGE. I have to disagree with you on Jak and Daxtar having an identity issue because while it is true that Jak and Daxtar (as a series) went from a bright and cheerful to dark and brooding to being more realistic in terms of having duality yet that was always in the series in the guise of missions (objectives). The first game did have missions and even racing-esque missions, just like the future two games, and had Light Eco and Dark Eco in the very same game. Plus there was a bit of foreshadowing if the Spider Cave is used as an example.
In the Spider Cave, you (as in the player) can see the Precursor Robot being transformed into something far more sinister compared to the Oracles that you see throughout the first game and some Oracles actually foreshadow upcoming events. Even playing through the first game the tone actually shifts between the hub worlds (if you count Gol and Maia's Citadel as a hub world) from bright and cheerful to dark and brooding to being in duality.
@@BMCBroManClash I would argument Gol and Maia's Citadel is no different that Crash 1 and Crash 2 setup. You start off in the jungles and go through various areas in the natural world, but slowly get more and more closer to the modern industrial world (the factory and labs in Crash 1 and the space station in Crash 2)
The problem is that grown ass people see the series as a platformer. Me as a kid, i saw this series as an adventure. And that's what every kid did. And that adventure was incredible.
Honestly, I prefer the sequels over the first one, but I do agree that a reboot that has the elements of all 3 would be great! I would definitely preorder that!
Honestly, I agree. I spent last year playing the first one on my gaming YT, and I just wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible. But I love the second two games, even if I hate a lot of their missions. If I were to make a reboot, perhaps the reboot would already have a mix of the sequels with the first.
Nowdays we have dozens of open world games with mish-mash of stealth, RPG elements, crafting, collecting ect. ect. Jak & Daxter sequels were ahead of their time! I just replayed the trilogy and Jak 2 holds up WAY better than GTA3!
I actually feel like Jak 2 was more comedic than 3. I don’t really think there was an identity crisis. After the first game, they went a different direction and stuck with it. Jak 2 and beyond (including the spin-offs) have the same type of style. Jak 1 is the only outlier. This would be more a case of early installment weirdness, not an identity crisis.
Yeah I found Jak 3 to be the darkest EASILY. Between the destruction of the palace killin’ thousands of the civilians in the process & Damas dyin’ in Jak’s arm without knowin’ the familial bond they have & Jak jus pickin’ up on it at the very end……just……damn
@The Juicy Jedi jester I wouldn’t say that. The base gameplay is the same, but everything from the dialogue style, story, locations, colors used, music, and designs is different in 1 compared to the other games.
@The Juicy Jedi jester I just recently replayed them as well. The changes from 1 to 2 aren’t “minor”. Not even the developers would describe them like that.
Despite the identity crisis the games themselves are still good aside from a few flaws they've fun to play most of the time, I totally agree that it desperately needs a reboot because this series should have more consistency.
sadly if they gonna do a jak and daxter comeback is gonna be a reboot Jak 2-3 are some of the best games of all time and such a brave decision to change the classic collectathon formula
@@evansvisual Yep I do think the change up was fun but even if they did we would always still have the original set around to go back to but I do understand what you are saying those were some fun times playing those games
Hard disagree. The Jak trilogy was created by a relentless drive for innovation. Naughty Dog wanted to break new ground and move away from the cute, colorful world of Crash and do something more mature and dark while giving Sony a new franchise. Jak 3 might be the only one I’ll agree with you one as it was rushed out after Jak II, but it’s also my favorited the three so…
I wanted a unique insight and you just kept calling everything edgy and angsty or "angy" with little leeway for genuine critiques. Also Naughty Dog isn't not making Jak games because of how the games shifted genre. It's because they're a completely different studio now that no longer makes lighthearted platformers anymore. They only make borderline interactive movies like Uncharted or The Last of Us. They already were making a Jak 4 but it ended up deviating so drastically in the early stages that it just ended up becoming TLoU.
A big hard disagree from me. I love the direction they took with Jak II, I love the darker tone, I love the characters it introduced and I absolutely adored the story. Saying stuff like Jak II is a mishmash of what was popular back then is wrong, sure it took inspiration from other games that were popular at the time but it combined all of that into one incredible game that still holds up to this day, in fact I would say Jak II holds up better than GTA 3. Imo the odd game in the trilogy is TPL because Jak 2 and 3 are very similar.
Well angsty EMO kids probably did find Jak 2 and 3 better. Story was good in Jak 2 at least but the gameplay tried too much to be everything popular at the time at once. Also the checkpoint system was god awful. Even if they wanted to do a bit more seroius tone on the series (Repeat : Love the story as i was an angsty emo kid) but the gameplay itself is maybe the worst i have ever played on any console.
I don’t think the series really has that big of an identity crisis. 2 and 3 both play similarly and are thematically similar. The odd one out is the first game, but I feel that was just Naughty Dog wanting to go in a different direction for the sequels, not them simply chasing trends. All in all, I think the massive shift in tone with 2 and 3 as compared with the first game only makes this franchise more interesting, in my opinion. I think the only reason it hasn’t come back is because Naughty Dog has become best known for these realistic, highly cinematic experiences, and probably aren’t willing to stray too far away from that at this time. If Resistance became a massive, genre defining franchise, do you think Insomniac would still be making Ratchet, or just primarily focusing on first person shooters? It’s an interesting thing to think about.
Personally, about resistance, I feel that if the 3rd one was successful, because the psn hack killed it since it came out right before it, they would have been going back and forth between resistance and ratchet still as they were at that time. Resistance: fall of man Tools of destruction Resistance 2 Quest for booty and a Crack in time Resistance 3 All 4 one That was how they did things for awhile and if resistance 3 had not been butchered by the psn hack, there probably would have been a resistance 4 after all 4 one, but since that main part of the series ended, they probably had to do damage control and do a bunch of projects to save themselves, like into the nexus, full frontal assault, fuse, song of the deep, and sunset overdrive. I think, personally, that ratchet and clank 2016 saved the studio and Marvel's Spiderman got them back into their groove, since we know those 2 games sold ridiculously well versus all those other games released after resistance 3 at the earliest, which didn't.
@@arkdetective Completely agree. I was just using Insomniac and Resistance as an example. I do think it’s something to think about though, because I feel like Insomniac didn’t really make a series that rivaled the success of Ratchet and Clank before Spider-Man. If Resistance was that series, I wonder if they would have eventually started focusing on making other FPSs over platformers, like how Naughty Dog has completely focused on making cinematic, third person action games after the success of Uncharted. However, at this point, even though Spider-Man is a huge success for Insomniac, and they have a good thing going with Marvel properties, I don’t think they’ll ever move away from Ratchet. Like you said, R&C 2016 kinda put Insomniac back on the map. I don’t think the games they made after Resistance 3 were bad, but none came close to matching the back to back success of Ratchet 2016 and Spider-Man. Now, because of those two IPs, I think Insomniac is, hands down, the greatest studio purchase Sony has ever made, and is one of the best developers under the PlayStation Studios umbrella. They’ve really turned things around since Resistance 3.
Except they ND said thats why they changed the second and third game to be how it was. They were looking at what was popular at the time and saw GTA and mission based games were spiking in popularity
@@MelancholyJoker19 There’s clear inspiration taken from GTA in a few aspects but Jak 2 and 3 never feel like they’re just trying to chase the trends of the time. Both of those games have a very unique feel that allows them to really stand on their own.
I used to hate Jak 2 when it came out because the precursor legacy was my favorite game of all time but I’ve grown to love it for what it is instead of comparing It to the first game and hating it because of its darker tone and because it’s not a pure 3d platformer
I don't think there was an issue eith how the games played out. They had a cohesive story and gave the characters growth and development. Every action had a reaction. Sure there was a melding of influences for each game but they still stand strong as their own entity and played off of each other. The single person zoomed race in TPL paved the way for the racing seen in Jak II. The dark and light eco were both introduced in the first game. Dark eco's corruption of the mind as seen in Jak was also shown with Gol and Maia. The Jak series knew what it was, a series that grew and matured along with the audience that played it.
I disagree. Jak II and 3 work, sales numbers seem reflective of games at the time (Japan's sales numbers being low for example). Even today, if Jak was to reboot to a Precursor Legacy type game it would loose what made the trilogy as a whole Jak. Jak's identity crisis, if it has one started at Jak X but even so that is objectively still a good and tightly controlled racing game.
As a fan of pure platforming I love the first game but I also throughly enjoyed Jak 2 & 3. On release I was not a massive fan of the darker, grittier envionments and darker gameplay but ultimately the Jak franchise had the better story arc when compared to Ratchet and Clank/ Sly Cooper and was a 'precursor' to the great narrative in the Uncharted games. Looking back I think it is a positive that each game had it's own unique identity. With Ratchet and Clank, once you've played one of the main line titiles you have effectively played them all.
Ehh nah I don't agree with the story arc aspect since if we're comparing trilogies sly had much more satisfactory conclusion with sly 3 and even though RaC wasn't that story focused at this point UYA gave proper character arc for an initial antagonist like qwark and giving ratchet and clank progression as heroes with a shift in chemistry and goals in a natural way while everything else felt organic and reasonable like the formation of the purpose of Q-Force being comprised of mostly NPC characters from the original game and the introduction of Nefarious as a character/villain. Jak 3 on the other hand with the exception of Damas and Jaks relation ship has a *lot* of aspects that weren't well thought out for what it was trying to be like constantly swapping villains without build up or proper pacing, factions like the dark makers being integrated in a very lazy way, most other characters not really doing anything being underwhelming (especially keira), Jak and ashelins relationship being questionable at best and then this whole mar shit at the end which didn't add anything besides confusion and endless debate.
I just think a proper Jak 4 needs to happen to clarify the lore around Mar, the Precursors and the ancient fight between the humans and Hora-quan. Still a lot of open pieces. If done right, it can revitalise the whole franchise.
I've learned that I have a tendency of loving stuff that for most people is too much of a mish-mash or a mixed bag and then seeing stuff that they like as too one note for me.
Yeah, me too. Crash 3, Spyro 3, Jak 3, Banjo Tooie, Ratchet And Clank 3, some games with a lot of variety that i love in every aspect but few people dont seem to like its new aspects of the gameplay.
I don't think the muddled tone of the series is that much of a problem honestly. For example, I wouldn't say that the Three Colours movie trilogy has an identity crisis simply because each installment has different concepts and themes that it wants to focus on, in fact (for me personally, although I can certainly see why others are turned off) it adds to it. I remember enjoying the first game fine when I played it, but Jak II added SO much on top of game 1, in directions I was never anticipating, that I ended up loving the first game even more because of it. The series was pulling from so many different things that, ironically, it felt even more original than it did before. I get why other people struggle with it, but for me it just makes the series' identity all the more clear and lucid. That's almost certainly why no Jak IV has been forthcoming for almost two decades now. Who would be the audience for it? Do you want to make it like the first game (still the most successful)? That would be ignoring Jak II and Jak 3. So do you do it in the style of the sequels? But then you've alienated people who only like the first game. Naughty Dog would be between a rock and a hard place with that one.
So, Jak II may be in my top 3 favorite video games of all time with the series as a whole being my favorite franchise. That said, I do not want any truly new games. I want true remasters of the originals. Not the ports they have been putting out every so often on each counsel. I want a ground up remaster like what spyro got.
@@bamban_garcia5562 While I do generally agree with that definition, a remake typically changes some things up as well. A remaster can be close to a remake if the enhancements are plentiful as well. Plus, Toys for Bob themselves have said they consider the Crash and Spyro trilogies more so as remaster+s, as they felt they didn't really change enough to consider them as remakes. So, while I do generally agree with where you are coming from, I do think the original poster used the terms in a correct manner.
@@bamban_garcia5562 That's fair, though I wouldn't say the remake of Demons' Souls necessarily blows the original out of the water, as it is still largely using the same code, or at least similar code.
Jak doesn't have an "identity crisis," Naughty Dog knew full well what they were doing when making the games. The reason Ratchet survives (because it's had its fair share of bad titles) and Sly might be coming back before Jak has nothing to do with "confusion in the franchise." It's because Insomniac values their properties, and Sucker Punch seems to as well. ND has moved on to their realism-based titles, and most of the people who worked on the Jak games are now gone. Plus, the last time a developer that wasn't ND made a Jak game, we got The Lost Frontier. I pretty much wholeheartedly disagree with you on this one, for many reasons. Once you said it needed a reboot, I knew there was no hope for me to agree with you. I respect your opinion, but I personally find it completely wrong.
It’s not really an identity crisis imo. Jak II, III, X, and Daxter psp all consistently follow the new tone established by II. TPL is the only outlier, and it’s used to contrast the new style in a very clever way.
In some aspects jak 3 felt a bit comedic at all. You can kind of tell the writers were running out of ideas when daxter mentions “underpants.” I mean I still love it overall but the second game will always be my favourite as I really loved the vibe it was going for and new characters introduced too.
I wouldn't say its an identity crisis seems more like natural evolution and to be honest I really liked what jak's II and III were doing better then one at nothing else don't ramp up the difficulty so high that the casual gamer who dosent get to play that often can't win
There doesn't need to be a reboot at all. Ratchet, story wise at least, is nothing like it was before, and while I haven't played Sly yet, I've heard Sly 4 isn't that great of a continuation. Jak existed and is well loved amongst many people and looked back on fondly. I don't have much faith in some other company to try and capture the magic of the original games.
Hey there it's been so long! I gotta disagree as well. I enjoyed the transition tbh and felt it was purposeful, even as a kid. It was fun to play the dystopian style game and just kinda shows how life can be cheerful one moment and change drastically. Change isn't bad, but it's how we approach it and jak 2 onward showed that well.
I don't think many game company's would be able to change a game series so much and have it still be really good like naughty dog did. Yeah the big change in tone between the first and second game is a little bit weird, but they did a great job at doing it.
it's really more the series evolved fast, they just gotta pick up where the story left off and fill in the gaps if any instead of rebooting it from what I can tell
The series is perfect because they had drastic change in the years but the soul remained intact, this is the power of this series, lot of variety, people is not used to this nowadays
💎I always Love Jak and Daxter so much. mostly I love Jak and Daxter the Precursor Legacy because it's more colorful peaceful and Nature it's all about Collecting Orbs, Scout Flies, and Power cells. Jak 2 & 3 dose not have power cells and scout flies like it was in Jak one. I wish in my heart they should REMAKE Jak and Daxter in the FUTURE just like they REMAKE Crash and Spyro Trilogy. Like I said Jak one is my Favorite💎
If you look the differences totally without context then for sure first game is different when compared to the first one. But when you take the context of the story and Naughty Dog's vision the trilogy is fine as it is. Also for many younger people at that time (me included) moving from Jak 1 to 2 and 3 was a good introduction to more seriously toned games without actually playing +18 rated games.
I really couldn’t agree with the idea that these games have an identity crisis. Jak and Daxter grow and change. The games do too. If any of these games felt like the other, they would be too similar. In terms of gameplay and aesthetics, Jak II was a perfect decision for the series.
If you follow the cycle of Naughtydogs career, it actually makes sense: Crash Bandicoot: Childhood, Blissful Ignorance Jake and Daxter: Awkward Teens, Self Discovery Uncharted: Settling into Adulthood, and sticking to your strengths. The Last of Us: Midlife Crisis, chasing Oscar Bait. So yeah, the Jak Trilogy is the Awkward Teen phase of Naughtydogs career, which definitely reflects in the franchise itself. That said, it's for these reasons Jak, in many way, is one of the most fascinating and intriguing set of games they have made. Maybe I'm just weird, but I love how each Jak game feels distinct from the other. I appreciate that Naughtydog was willing to experiment with different game mechanics. I enjoy how the story has various tones and keeps me guessing at every turn. Some of the story twists ended up being very clever and I genuinely didn't see comming. Now, not all developers could get away with making a franchises this eclectic and have it hold together. But I felt like Jason Ruben, Andy Gavin, Evan Wells, and the rest of the team were competent enough at their jobs that they could take those risks, and despite any shortcomings, still release a fun set of games that captures the appeal of their fans. Given that this franchise still has a cult following that's curious about it's future. It's safe to say they did just that.
I think the reason why Naughty Dog isn't working on a new Jak & Daxter is less because of the reasons you've said and more because... well... none of the people still there worked on it. They're too busy making movies with gameplay to care about it, and honestly I don't want them to touch it with a 10 foot pole.
I used to watch my brother play jak 3 and I totally had a crush on jak😂 I jus started playing jak 3 again today and I still love it!! I haven’t even tried the first two but if I can find em and afford em I’m gonna!
Well, I always wanted a brand new Jak and Daxter game for years, but I wouldn't mind for a reboot game of Jak and Daxter franchise with ONLY cartoonish animation styles from some new game developer of Sony Interactive Entertainment company. NOT a realistic animation style for Jak and Daxter reboot game just like that Naughty Dog Games made the realistic animation style of cancelled Jak 4 with a concept art in my opinion. Just saying though.
I disagree. The tonal shift from 1 to 2 was big, but they pulled it off. Where the Jak trilogy differs from Ratchet and Sly is that it reflects the transition that people make from their adolescence to early adult years. You talk about Jak being an angsty teen in 2, but with his goatee I felt that Jak was 17 at minimum, but likely closer to 20. Jak is rightfully upset at being tortured for 2 years at the start of Jak 2. Also, the gritty aspects of the sequels were hinted at -- albeit unintentionally -- in the original. Starting off at Sandover Village and going to Misty Island, the swamp and the Spider Caves did hint at something bigger. Gol and Maia's Citadel being futuristic also works well with what we got in the sequels, especially 3. The original also had moments where you did things that were unrelated to platforming like herding cows and collecting fish. There was a bit of a mission structure to the Precursor's Legacy. I will say that I wish the series as a whole had more challenging platforming segments. I think Jak 3 was the weakest as its story felt rushed. I wouldn't want a reboot, though; a sequel explaining the House of Mar and possibly reviving Gol and Maia could be nice. The Lost Frontier sucked, but I liked the idea of Keira becoming an Eco Sage, and Jak using a staff, akin to a mage.
Jak now saying "hell" isn't 'a teen who's allowed to cuss' it makes sense he'd be more aggressive and use strong language to express how he feels as a result of being tortured or whatever happened it was that happened to him
I dont necessarily think it was a bad move to have a change in tone from the 1st game. I found this charcter's dramatic change very intriguing. In fact, I personally encourage more games to take some creative freedoms Naughty Dog took with this trilogy. I do agree that the game is a mixed bag going from Crash Bandicoot, to GTA, to Mad Max. And while it may serve as a great trilogy with variety and color to some, the thematic potpourri simply splits the audience. If they were to do a reboot, they should focus on an alternate ending to the 1st and simply make a 'Jak and Daxter 2 and 3' keeping it the family friendly platformer they started with. From a business standpoint, this will also be a good move to return the interest from Eastern customers
I wonder if it the Mad Max-esque worlds in CTR Nitro Fueled and Crash 4: It's About Time were really subtle nods to Jak 3. Taking inspiration from what Naughty Dog eventually took inspiration from.
I totally agree with you when you said that if they changed the characters and make some small changes to the story people wouldn't think it was a Jak and Daxter sequel. I'm not saying Jak 2 and the games after was bad, but it didn't felt like Jak and daxter at all. No one can say that Naughty dog planned Jak 2 to be like how it turned out. In Jak 1, Jak actually has an uncle and that just shows that Naughty dog didn't think that Jak 2 was going to be in the future because Jak wouldn't have a uncle if he was from the future. That or the uncle should had came with the group back to the future. But I'm fine with Jak 2 having a darker tone and became more mature with a more serious story. I'm even fine with the guns. But the biggest change that Naughty dog made that really made Jak 2 and 3 feel like different games is the fact that they changed the game from a collection game, to a mission base game like GTA. That is the main problem I have with the rest of the Jak games. I replay Jak 1 all the time but I never replayed Jak 2 and 3. Once I 100% Jak 2 and 3 I never once replayed the game. I only game back just to mess around for a little bit killing guards, driving and destorying other vehicles in the desert, that sort of thing. I really do think Jak 2 and everything else after it should had just became a new series. They could had easily made some small changes to Jak 2 to make it into a whole different series with new characters. The gameplay for Jak 2 and 3 is not bad, but its not really like how the first game was that much.
What's funny is that the PSP game Daxter has the solution to the problem by combining TPL's platforming focus with Jak 2's structure and weapon based combat. It's linear but it's a platformer through and through. There are a few mini-games and vehicle levels but unlike Jak 3, there are way more levels than random variety stuff. The visuals are also more vibrant and colorful, almost fantasy-like despite taking place during Jak 2. The collect-a-thon aspect, while optional, is more relevant than the collectibles in 2 and 3. I wouldn't call it the best Jak game, I still prefer 1, 2 and X but it had the right ideas and a solid formular for a future game.
I feel that Jak II was not a solemn/grim game. I have plenty of o be verall/positive memories of this title, including plush jungle/beach levels. This video feels like you didn’t give Jak Ii, my arguably favorite entry, a fair chance. I have more opinions about the franchise, but I’ll leave it at that.
I really wish in Jak 4 that gol would come back :) Also if we could travel setting up the events for the previous 3 games! Also how cool would it be to visit sand over village and as you travel between worlds you can see the destructing and aging of areas. But anyway the reason why gol comes back is because like a game we will not speak of haha! The world is running out of dark eco and so Torn sends a scouting party out who comes across an old eco silo from the precursor days! They open it and see a large precursor robot but no dark eco! they enter the robot and find a big crystal dark eco gem thing. They extract the eco and boom a hand grabs one of the extracotrs and the dark eco starts melting and the return of GOL! Now Jak is not even here so he would not even be aware of Gols return~
If they ever did a reboot, I feel like it would definitely need to get the best aspects of all the main games for it: the collectibles and level variety of 1, the darker tone, character variety and story layout of 2, as well as the weapon/gameplay variety in 3.
So like everyone else here, which I don’t think I need to make any more points than what’s been already said, I personally believe Jak 2 & 3 weren’t games that were trying to keep up with the times. To me anyways, they were more of the characters progression within all 3 games. In Jak and Daxter we witnessed the story of two kids who were being kids in a colorful world. Then decide to go to misty island which was this dark, scary and dangerous place that Samos the green sage warn the main characters to never go to. Typical kid doesn’t listen to adult’s warnings and goes anyways. Daxter turns into an ottsel and now they need to find Gol the dark eco sage to fix him. Only problem is, he kidnaps the other sages and is the main antagonist trying to kill Jak in the first place. Brings a precursor robot back to life, Jak defeats them and they find a portal that begins the second game. In Jak 2, Praxis abducts Jak and pumps him with dark eco and this is where I have to disagree with you here. He’s not angry cus he’s an “angsty teen with a hot temper “ he’s angry cus the rest of his childhood has been stripped from him by a psycho. Wouldn’t you be that way too if you were Jak? To continue that point, there are moments in Jak 2 where he shows more emotion than just anger. He shows sarcasm when around torn and even the shadow, sorrow when they realize when they’re in the future, even cracks a smile every now and again. So just saying he’s an angst teenager isn’t exactly accurate. Anyways, Jak finds out Kor is the bad later on in the game and also finds out that the boy is actually Jak from that past. In Jak 3, Jak finds out who his father his and Dax finds out he’s a precursor. I don’t think I need to explain the rest of the story here as I think my points been made. As far as the gameplay goes, I loved it. Hover bike races, dark eco monsters and all
As some1 who grew up along side these games wen they came out, i was surprised by the tone shift originally. But also felt like the games matured with their players. The kids that played the original were older and thus were interested in more mature offerings. Gotta remember, gaming has become much more accepted by the mainstream and older people now then they were back then. Mostly kids and teens were playing, now 60++ year olds regularly play
Jak and Daxter MUST HAVE A REBOOT‼️‼️‼️‼️ Naughty Dog must be told on mass that what they have is raw products for a unified epic game (or trilogy)❗️Me and my older brother say it for more than a decade 🙌🏻💯 Please, pressure ND to make a consistent logic story timeline and scenarios where you must use all powers, a medium difficulty that everyone can play (I never dared to play Jak 2), cut out stupid missions, make the places we hate going to, lovable and interesting, and make ruined places accessible in Jak 3 (without any invisible wall), to immerse the player into the destruction that the metal heads and Errol's robots did. Jak&Daxter trilogy are a raw material for an epic adventure, open world of exploration, tension and even esoteric experience.
If there’s ever a remake of this trilogy, I only want three things 1- Outfit selection. Jak 2 outfit in Jak 1 pls 2- No cyber eroll 2- I wish they would keep a bit more of Jak 1’s visual style. Why do they never actually outright call the red, yellow, and blue guns “Blue eco” and “Yellow eco” and all? Its like they wiped the coloured ecos from the lore, aside from a single mission in Jak 3 where you spread what is explicitly called green eco over the dark eco plants. Why don’t the precursor temple floors make those awesome echoey footstep sounds anymore? I dunno man. Just a bit more of that old classic Jak 1 flavour would be a nice touch for a hypothetical remake
Sorry canadian guy eh ima have to respectfully disagree. The world building has been there since the first game… like if you talk to the precursor oracle statue that gives you the power cell it dead ass tells you prophetic hints and statements that’ll unfold in the next two games… 🙃 naughty dog had insane story telling... even with the chance there wouldn’t be sequels or guaranteed sequels. they took the risk to still put those things in. there wasn't ever any identify crisis naughty dog did what they wanted originally with the series.
I remember playing the first one on play station 2 and I loved it. To have it be updated with better graphics so I could play it on my play station 4 would be awesome. I never played the second or third ones but I do think that they should be made almost to be like the first one. It was so bright and colorful and I loved doing the missions and trying to collect everything.
I OFTEN think of scripts and concepts of different sequels for the original Jak and Daxter. No guns, double-down on the eco powers and be able to mix the different ecos in different combinations, and have Gol survive being buried in a Dark Eco silo and come back as the main villain, as a huge Dark Eco beast corrupting the lands and transforming enemies into harder Dark Eco minions as you progress.
What the series needs most is to find a way to in jak 2 incorporate the story of daxer trying to find Jak and having flashes of what's happening to Jak be shown to daxter. Another thing that needs to be added is within the story Jak and Dexter when they get to the more gritty part the adds more to the the world is the the world which I think was well developed it just missed components like actually showing jak's torment of the dark eagle and how it's affecting him. If the story was to reflect in an actual meaningful way that Jak has actually been turned more dark and more tormented than by the 3rd game when they do with the actual light Eco and more light hearted tone again perfectly balances out with the story because Jak is being balanced back to himself I think that certain aspects yet like the the cars that were weaponized for weaponized for races was not very well done but every game has a bad idea.
In all honesty, and I've expressed this a number of times on my channel. But I think if a reboot for the series were to ever happen, the series can find new life in a TV show. Where if the stories of the games were adapted, they could better balance things when transitioning between the 1st & 2nd games stories. 1st game a bit darker, 2nd game not as dark. Now of course, this could work with a reboot game as well, it's just if Sony can't find a developer to do said reboot or continuation. Then they could go this route.
Honestly I don't think a reboot is necessary. I think they should just quadruple down and say "F*** it! We're going to space after all!" and finally throw Sly Cooper and Rachet & Clank into into the series' batter. I'm talking the full epic space opera. Like Keira and Samos get in contact with the Precursors and theres an intergalactic threat. The Precursors just vaguely say they're going to pimp Jak's ride and they magic a key shaped object into existence. Hilarity ensues involving Dexter attempting to do multiple modern dances with the key as his partner until he accidentally drops it down a hole and it lands in an ancient Precursor ignition and the entirety of Haven City transforms into a star ship. That level of crazy is what we need next.
Currently running a play through of the trilogy on my other YT channel, but I've had the idea to try working on either a reboot or a better concluding game to the series rather than Lost Frontier. I haven't planned anything besides character designs for Jak and Daxter, but if anyone wants to help me brainstorm, let me know!
If they ever reboot it, they should just place it in a Cyberpunk setting as Haven City was clearly based on that. With a story about pollution and enviormentalism(eco). It would be a perfect contrast of settings and themes for the story to develop in.
I think you're right in that the only good way for J&D to come back would be with a reboot. However, I think it's ok to let some franchises rest in peace. J&D feels like one of them.
I feel like the only issue between the three main games is the transition like form Jak 1 to 2 you find the device that brings you to the future in the first game but they cut out all the in-between stuff then suddenly you are bound to a table getting tortured with dark eco Then again from 2 to 3 you become a hero a hailing victory over the metal head to the people convict you to exile the transitional choices never got flushed out enough through the story I also yet to play the Dexter games so it explained there then instead of a partial reboot (what I'm in favor for) then a collection of remaster with the Dexter games included
Daxter is my personal favorite video game companion/sidekick. If it weren't for his commentary/jokes in the 1st game I probably wouldn't have enjoyed playing it since Jak didn't talk. His spin off game actually shows that he is capable of being a hero in his own right and a comic relief character can have dramatic moments. In the 2nd game we actually got to see his and Jak's relationship develop and we actually see why they are such good friends/heroic duo. And the 3rd game brought their friendship to the test when Daxter stood by Jak when no one else would and he got his happy ending getting his glory, girl, and pants. Oh, and let's just all agree that the last 2 games aren't relevant to their story!
Oh btw I also wrote a very ambitious plot/premise for Jak 4 and posted it in the comments of another Jak 4 video. I think that video got deleted but if anyone is interested I’ll gladly share!
Considering your previous Jak and Daxter videos are precisely what got me to subscribe in the first place, this is awesome! And I think you make an excellent point. I adore these games (at least the first two), but they're a weird sell. I think the major change in tone and complexity of story is what drew me to Jak II in the first place, to the point that I've made more fanart and written more fanfic for it than any other video game. However, there is a lot of sloppy plotting, and the Capital E Edginess hasn't all aged well. Jak 3 didn't do great in the story or character department, so I deeply resented it as a teenager and haven't played it in a decade. Anyway, I love what a grab bag of genres and influences Jak and Daxter is, but I definitely understand why that hobbles it moving forward.
Honestly, I never thought of Jak as a 3D Crash Bandicoot, given they have different goals and setups. To me it just feels like an expanded Banjo-Tooie. I can't really blame Naughty Dog for wanting to chase trends, because as a business, you want to know what people are interested in so your own product doesn't suffer. Tons of developers have done that (i.e. Rare with Battletoads and wanting a piece of the Ninja Turtles pie in its initial heyday, Killer Instinct for fighting games, etc.). Still, Jak came out as a bit of a mess, and I'm not sure what you do with a franchise that, to the uninitiated, seemed to be afraid what it was in its previous guise. Pretty sure that's why Naughty Dog decided to start fresh with Uncharted for PS3 and nixed Jak 4, which was even more radically different than everything that came before it. I think whether it's rebooted or remade, if someone has enough passion for the series, I don't see why it couldn't work. And hey, if they make Jak 2 better, I'm all for it.
Honestly, if they had did it from the beginning, I think the series would have been fine. But the issue with changing tones and gameplay styles, is you alienate a portion of your fans. There's a reason Jak & Daxter was the most successful of the three. 2 and 3 alienated the fans who loved the colorful fun worlds of the original
I completely I agree! This is one of my favourite games but honestly didn’t enjoy jak 2 or 3 as it just went way off topic. I feel it should have stayed on topic with the first and maybe played on some of the characters from the first and their stories or something rather than chasing popularity. A full reboot must happen!!!
Totally with you. I’m developing a fan game in my spare time actually that’s an alternate sequel to the first game but taking place in the original vibrant world
I agree with you on this! Precursor Legacy was (and still is) one of my favourite games of all time. As a kid, when I moved on to Jak 2 and 3 I was so disappointed. It wasn't the same game that I fell in love with. I feel like they were trying to make it more serious and geared towards older male players. Maybe this is just because I'm a girl, but I didn't want tech, guns, and cars in my Jak game. I love the Ratchet and Clank trilogy for the weapons, but that's not what I loved about Jak and Daxter. When thry moved on to 2 and 3, everything felt far more generic to me. Something I could even notice as a kid.
I'd be down with a reboot staying in the past and have Gol and Maia be reoccurring villains like Eggman. Maybe have a more serious story than any Eggman plot lol. There were tons of areas that didn't make it into the final version of Jak 1 so those could be added to it or even be used in subsequent games. The world in the first game was the most interesting to me, the dark, dirty vibe of Haven City got boring real quick. Plus we'd be able to have eco powers back. Imagine getting to maybe upgrade how Jak uses eco to the point where he becomes the sage of Light eco or he could be called "The Rainbow Sage" cause he can use all types of eco
I would like to see the series come back in general lol but a reboot would be cool to see I did enjoy playing all the games and do agree there is some stuff that could be worked on when it comes to the 2nd and 3rd games but still had fun for what they were hopefully we get something announced for this series one day.
I think Breadsword does a great job at explaining how all 3 games tie into each other. As if the direction it took was on purpose and how the sequels are just as great as the first. I disagree with your take, but you seem to be a great UA-camr so you've got my subscription :D
I don't know because i love Jack and Daxter how they are right know i would say a remake would be perfect like the same games better gráfics and they can change a litle some things in the game
Jak was my first favorite game series next to Ratchet and Sly Cooper when I got PS2s in the early 2000s. I still consider being a fan to Jak and Daxter, and will be for years to come. Jak 2 had harder difficulty compared to Jak TPL and 3, the 1st mar seal is an example, getting hit every few seconds by guards was the worst, but it was fine for me.
I disagree. The style change was mostly due to the typical 3d cartoon platformers losing popularity at the time while open world games with a darker tone were increasing in popularity. Jak and Daxter stopped being made because the last game was a total failure. The game wasn't even made by the same developers. I liked the story and I think it would have been a really good throwback to the roots had it been done correctly. The original developers wanted to focus on their realistic games and sadly don't want to go back to cartoony platformers.
I always feel like they saw Ratchet & Clank and wanted something similar but much bigger, which is why they went with the GTA style game, also doing a reboot can be risky as they need to change the first game completely to clearly connect to Jak 2 and 3.
Okay so UA-cam removed the dislike button. So here is a comment to interact with for you to post your grievances and dislikes. I believe in being as clear to everyone as possible
Thanks for doing that! Not that I dislike the video, but it's great to have the option. Very sad that YT did that.
Awesome review on Jak & Daxter
Yeah I have a feeling someone will take advantage of this situation and just make some very Negative based content that will put the lack of a Dislike button to question, heck just anything really that bad will likely make UA-cam reverse their bad decision.
Any leads on the New Spyro 4
If not it’s cool was only checking
You get a like from me just for being so open and honest. Great video!👍
How do you not have more likes? Everything you’ve said is so true.
@@MelancholyJoker19 I see your point. Do you mean you agree with me or are you refuting my points?
The problem is that grown ass people see the series as a platformer. Me as a kid, i saw this series as an adventure. And that's what every kid did. And that adventure was incredible.
I'm 30 and it's still an adventure to me, these games are top tier in my collection 💚🧡
"Jak 2 holds up WAY better than GTA3!"
I couldnt agree more :)
@The Juicy Jedi jester Slightly? Minor? I don’t think you remember the games as much as you think.
@The Juicy Jedi jester I just recently replayed them as well. The changes from 1 to 2 aren’t “minor”. Not even the developers would describe them like that.
Dude i loved jak and daxter games. It has no identity crisis, its innovation
Despite the identity crisis the games themselves are still good aside from a few flaws they've fun to play most of the time, I totally agree that it desperately needs a reboot because this series should have more consistency.
They were pretty fun and same I think it would be nice to see a reboot
sadly if they gonna do a jak and daxter comeback is gonna be a reboot Jak 2-3 are some of the best games of all time and such a brave decision to change the classic collectathon formula
@@evansvisual Yep I do think the change up was fun but even if they did we would always still have the original set around to go back to but I do understand what you are saying those were some fun times playing those games
I think keep them the mature gun platformer with gta elements is the best spot they could be.
@@whitecreamymilk8436 facts
100% agreed, can tell he low key doesn't fuck with jak 2 or 3
Jak II is a kickass game, and I will die on that hill.
Facts
No need to die for that. You ask pretty much everyone and they will agree with you. The game was also critically praised at that time.
@@LuffyxNamiisathing gameplay is good the checkpoint were terrible
Resistance: fall of man
Tools of destruction
Resistance 2
Quest for booty and a Crack in time
Resistance 3
All 4 one
That was how they did things for awhile and if resistance 3 had not been butchered by the psn hack, there probably would have been a resistance 4 after all 4 one, but since that main part of the series ended, they probably had to do damage control and do a bunch of projects to save themselves, like into the nexus, full frontal assault, fuse, song of the deep, and sunset overdrive.
@@MelancholyJoker19 Even then i would pick Jak over GTA any day.
I used to hate Jak 2 when it came out because the precursor legacy was my favorite game of all time but I’ve grown to love it for what it is instead of comparing
It to the first game and hating it because of its darker tone and because it’s not a pure 3d platformer
Personally, Jak 3 is my favorite.
x2
The Jak and Dafter series needs to make a comeback and it deserves that, despite that they're probably not going to do it.
But a reboot can make things right
Why wouldn’t you want a new game in the series? I loved the Spyro remakes but I would have preferred a new Spyro
I’m pretty sure they used the terms correctly.
It's impossible to disagree with the fact that Crash/Spyro & Ratchet/Jak are the Mount Rushmore of Playstation history.
I really liked every part of the Jak and Daxter Games.
And yes a reboot would be nice so long as it respects all 3
Yeah big disagree from me. I thought the series grew as it went on instead of staying stagnant. Definitely a big fan of all 3 personally
Jak 2 is my favorite in the franchise in fact i might do a jak marathon on my channel
I think Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (2001), Jak 2: Renegade (2003) and Jak 3 (2004) should come back for PlayStation because I love them all
Jak 4 (2022)
Hey there it's been so long! I gotta disagree as well. I enjoyed the transition tbh and felt it was purposeful, even as a kid. It was fun to play the dystopian style game and just kinda shows how life can be cheerful one moment and change drastically. Change isn't bad, but it's how we approach it and jak 2 onward showed that well.
Jak 2 is my favorite
Describing Jak's powers in Jak II as "Super Angy Powers" is quite frankly not only the most accurate, but the best thing I heard today LOL
That's nothing, Sparkster had the exact same situation even Crash and Spyro once had there own Indentiy crisis.
I don't think a reboot is necessary. Just a continuation from where Jak 3/Jak X left off. All they need to do is just streamline the game.
Lol you can tell he doesn't fuck with this series low key
I really couldn’t agree with the idea that these games have an identity crisis. Jak and Daxter grow and change. The games do too. If any of these games felt like the other, they would be too similar. In terms of gameplay and aesthetics, Jak II was a perfect decision for the series.
Yes I think Jak and daxter should be brought back yo
If you follow the cycle of Naughtydogs career, it actually makes sense:
Crash Bandicoot: Childhood, Blissful Ignorance
Jake and Daxter: Awkward Teens, Self Discovery
Uncharted: Settling into Adulthood, and sticking to your strengths.
I mean. They could make Jak a cinematic experience ngl. It would be pretty cool as Jak 3 was probably the most cinematic out of the 3
I used to watch my brother play jak 3 and I totally had a crush on jak😂 I jus started playing jak 3 again today and I still love it!!
@@mr.anonymous.2749 Yeah, it's just I like the cartoonish animation style of Jak and Daxter games way better. I'm just saying though.
If NaughtyDog has no interest on making another Jak game then pass it to another dev who is still into this pixar-game industry like Insomniac games.
They’re in desperate need of a comeback.
Just because the franchise evolved throughout each entry doesn’t mean it doesn’t know what it is. If anything it means that you don’t know what it is.
You have no understanding of what evolving a franchise actually is.
@@NateMakesMusic okay give me 1 example of an evolving franchise is besides the Jak games.
If there’s ever a remake of this trilogy, I only want three things
1- Outfit selection. Jak 2 outfit in Jak 1 pls
2- No cyber eroll
2- I wish they would keep a bit more of Jak 1’s visual style.
Hey CGE where did you get that smooth Crash Twinsanity cutscene at 1:55?
From crash twinsanity duh 🙄
@@Pwilliams4000 lol nono, i mean, they look REALLY hd, usually cutscenes on youtube from the game look bad or hq at best
@@PatoGuzmanAd oh
Not liking Jak 2's direction is a feminine trait. Also, remake/reboot? No fucking thanks, the series is great how it is. Leave it alone.
I would love a reboot a Jak and Daxter at the entire Jak series but more importantly I want naughty dog to finish the story of this series
Well naughty dog has to start from scratch by doing a reboot of Jak and Daxter
I feel like the only issue between the three main games is the transition like form Jak 1 to 2 you find the device that brings you to the future in the first game but they cut out all the in-between stuff then suddenly you are bound to a table getting tortured with dark eco
Then again from 2 to 3 you become a hero a hailing victory over the metal head to the people convict you to exile the transitional choices never got flushed out enough through the story
I also yet to play the Dexter games so it explained there then instead of a partial reboot (what I'm in favor for) then a collection of remaster with the Dexter games included
4:42 You broke my brain just by explaining that
I completely I agree!
Not gonna lie, this is a pretty bad take.
off topic but we need GEX to return!!!!
Dunkey would be happy!
I’ve never heard anyone ever call it “The Jak Series” before now.
They should make a come back
I would like to see the series come back in general lol but a reboot would be cool to see I did enjoy playing all the games and do agree there is some stuff that could be worked on when it comes to the 2nd and 3rd games but still had fun for what they were hopefully we get something announced for this series one day.
I think Breadsword does a great job at explaining how all 3 games tie into each other. As if the direction it took was on purpose and how the sequels are just as great as the first. I disagree with your take, but you seem to be a great UA-camr so you've got my subscription :D
I have wondered what the Jak & Daxter sequels would've looked like had Naughty Dog not chased the trends back in the day.
To each his own but I thought the first one is so weird. Good thing the sequels made the franchise stand out from Ratchet and Clank and Sly Cooper.
I think jak 4 go back in time just when the city was getting built. He becomes mar. The creator of the city
