I to am a little curious about Doddy… but glad you’re here answering questions and talking tech… great answer to the upside derailleur, you understand the logic in bikes, awareness and appreciation comes from experience. Great video of course so thanks for keeping gmbn tech going🤘😍
Remember that the sweep and angle of the handlebars mean that the angle of your grip changes as you rotate the bars, whereas stem and spacers do not. Changing the angle of the bars can have a huge effect on comfort and control as well as position.
#whereisdoddy not that the show isn't still good but I originally came here after years of reading his work in the magazines, as I imagine others have. It's a shame we're not getting an answer.
#AskGMBNtech March 20 was the last time a video featuring Andrew Dodd (aka Doddy) was uploaded. That's almost a month ago. Since then hundreds of subscribers have asked the same question. But you have not provided any answer whatsoever. That's a serious lack of respect for your subscribers. Until you provide an answer about Doddy's whereabouts, my subscription to the channel is off. #WhereIsDoddy?
I ride with my bars as high as I can get them to compensate for my back and spinal issues. Except for climbing, the ride improved in all other areas of trail and downhill.
Hey GMBN Tech Fans! As a lot of you may have caught onto, Doddy hasn’t been featured on the channel for a while. We are stoked to announce that Doddy will be returning to your screens in the near future. We apologise for the radio silence on this matter and hope it hasn’t caused any upset or confusion. Stay tuned for upcoming videos from Anna & Doddy! All the best and safe riding! The GMBN Tech Team
You do a fantastic job, But you're even better together with Doddy. I see many others asking without any replies from GBMN. However he's still active on his own socials, I hope everything is alright? I think some clarity is fair ☺ We love you all, but many are followers of Andrews work too for sure.
I disagree with the stem/handlebar answer! Correct me if i'm wrong, but handlebars have a rising plane that should be aligned with the headtube angle. If that is properly setup, having a higher rise bar or more spacers will shorten reach more. Obviously, if that handlebar plane is vertically alligned, reach won't change as much as height does.
How many weeks and episodes has Doddy been missing from now ? There is definitely something that has happened now, it’s too long to be away for a minor illness…. Maybe he has parted way with GMBN ? The quality of shows is suffering and the presenters are not even close in terms of knowledge and understanding of the topics covered!
Increases your bike’s travel has a negligible effect in bringing your handlebar closer. I’ve calculated it on my bike and a 10mm increment in travel means the handlebar is 0.21 mm closer so the effect can essentially be ignored.
Actual Bike Reach = Nominal Bike Reach - spacer height * COS(HA). For example: if you have a reach of 470mm as per the bike datasheet, a head angle of (63’), and 40mm of spacers under the stem: 470 -(40xCOS(63)) = 451.84 mm
It did seem like this subject could be covered more in detail and with different real world examples. Also, I'd like to see a shop that takes your measurements, as at a tailor's, and have an exact custom demo bike produced to try out as a start.
@@Happy_Biker I agree.... As in .. what effect does going from a 15mm rise bar to a 25mm rise bar, vs adding 10mm of spacers, or flipping the stem... Would be good to illustrate all of those "similar" changes and show the actual effect.. and more importantly, would most people notice the reach change?
Hi, the last question re damage to carbon. An inspection inside of the tube would be a good idea. This usually requies a borescope or snake camera. If the impact was significant it could cause delamination damage on the back face. Water can damage carbon composite because it is a composite. Water could have water capiliary along the fibres and possibly lead to delamination damage. Best to get an expert to check it over.
Doddy is definitely still with GMBN as he’s been tagging them in his recent posts he also put a new helmet day post up with his new smith lid and goggles, he also commented he had just been having time off on insta, so guessing he will be back soon Anna is doing an amazing job as well!
Lolz.. Bike specific brake cleaner. Forget that. Everything auto is half the price of bike specific products that are the exact same thing. Look at dot fluid and brake cleaner. It's all the same stuff. You just pay twice as much of it says bike. Don't do it!
#askgmbntech can I add spacers to the steerer tube under the stem if it’s higher than the steerer tube so causes a slight gap at the top for the stem cap , in that the stem cap will no longer be flush with the steerer tube but instead flush with a spacer ….?
I have a 2022 canyon strive (headtube angle is 63), can I steepen then headtube angle at 64 degrees to make my bike more agile and responsive? #AskGMBNTech
#AskGMBNTech I currently have shock stroke of 60mm and I am thinking of going to a 62.5 or 65 mm shock stroke, I have herd overstroking a bike isn't good but it hasn't really been said why so I am wondering what the downsides are of overstocking a bike is?
Easiest answer is that your tire might rub at bottom out...more complicated answer involves the kinematics of the frame pivot/arcs may not function optimally with a longer stroke.
Where the hell is Doddy? I appreciate everyone has their own opinions and tastes, but I personally only tune in to watch Doddy explain this stuff, where has he gone? I truly hope everything is ok with him and his family, the show need to get him back asap
What would you suggest to cover the rotors with? All I use is dawn dish soap or dawn power wash and never had a problem with contaminating my rotors I'm just curious thank you
#AskGMBNTech Hi there, I have a 2014 Specialized Demo and I was wondering what kind of chain guide goes with that frame (like ISCG 05 or any other kind) and if the BB affects anything on the guide. Thanks, love the show.
#aksgmbntech Hi, what are you thinking of hot waxing your chain. I see a lot of video's of hot waxing chains but they are always speaking about road bikes. Dont you this there's a advantage compared to normal lubricants on mountain bikes. No dust or mud sticking to the chain.
I have a suspicion that you did and are unaware of it. Contaminated rotors will LITERALLY NEVER feel the same. Inexperienced this first hand recently and it's both wild and annoyng AF that the 65 bucks my avid rotor cost technically already went down the drain.
I figured its the same when building my last bike and went with more spacers and flat bars. Feel like an idiot that the reach thing never occurred to me. Since I run a shorter stem then the bike would have came with as well I probably moved my bars quite a bit closer, maybe I should get some riser bars and slam the stem. Interesting...
#askgmbntech Hi Anna, Doddy, love gmbn tech! My question is about centerlock rotor. Is it normal to have a front and rear play (few radius) once discs are bolted to the good torque?
@Jonamail no it's a reel centerlock disc, it's sram hs2 CL with the "cassette" nut. And it's not a sleeping of the pad in the caliper. It a move from the center lock disc. If I do the same with my 6bolt wheels, no play at all. If it was a pad play, you will see the disc moving, if you paid attention, only the rim is moving in my video, in fact the entrie wheel is moving when the disc is fully lock in the caliper. I had the same problem with a adaptor on my old bike. It's probably more easy to see: ua-cam.com/video/AMEMWbseWjg/v-deo.html
Been riding high rise bars my whole Iife, and I have never cut down a steer tube to be "flush" with the stubby small stem, looks crap! Feels crap! Don't care what the current trend is. Trends are for the weak

How many millimeters are the rise of your handlebars? I'm thinking about getting some 35 or 40 mm rise handlebars? I'm 5'9 with a medium size frame

What happened to Doddy?
Posibly contaminating rotors while washing your bike - I always finish off by cleaning my rotors with alcohol as a routine precaution

Regarding high rise vs low rise handlebar, saying it doesn't affect reach, but would it affect the amount of pressure on the hands?
Thank you that was very helpful
The auto focus is quite distracting
Lol I didn’t notice until I read your comment

Just built a brand new Demo for a customer at the shop I work for. Twas quite the machine!
So the easiest solution to the techical problems caused by the derailleur on top would be to just pedal backwards?
Dawn Dish soap is an excellent degreaser and leaves rotors, cassette, ect squeaky clean with no residue. REAL cheap 👍
