As a new coder, how would I know to look up “hydronephrosis” instead of looking up the three codes? I honestly would have looked up all three and would have been under the impression that three codes would need to be assigned.

As you mentioned, you would have looked up all three codes, one of which includes hydronephrosis. When looking up your hydronephrosis code, since the patient also had a ureteral stone with obstruction and infection, pathway you would have followed would be main term "Hydronephrosis" followed by the subterm "with" then "obstruction" then "ureteral NEC" then calculus" and finally "with infection, landing on code N13.6. At this point even if you had already assigned the codes for the UTI and the ureteral calculus, you would have seen in looking up your hydronephrosis code that those two conditions were included in N13.6 and you could then remove them. Confusing I know! That is why coding clinic is so helpful in clearing up these types of issues. And the good news is although before watching this video you would have assigned all three codes, now you know only the one is needed when you come across this scenario.😊
