Everyone is over here praising how Gimberly has a voice now (as am I, of course) but I also want to point out how nice it is you went out of your way to make a lovely little doodle of your fiancée in the same style as your own little stand in guy. It kinda makes me think of a cute lil bedsheet ghost or something. I wish the two of ya only the best in the future!

Watching this whole video through I nodded at everything you said about the current state of the industry. I have so much respect for your journey, how you’re branding your channel, and the soul that you pour into what you teach. I also work in mobile gaming (sorry about you being laid off, but you’re gonna rock this channel full-time guaranteed!) and I do a little bit of everything for 2D, but you’re one of my favourite sources for 3D learning, and I hope you expand more on tutorials and analysis videos because your content is so digestible and easy to watch. 7:23 Holy shit. I do this but I never even thought about it as part of the workflow. I did it thinking it was a lazy way to format the video before it's animated.
Calling these "placeholder character stills" sounds like it's actually part of the process.
Ha. I couldn't think of any better way to do it -- it's not too different from a layout stage in animation, really.
I really enjoy the thought of Clementine being Doodley's theme, as that character is more playful and laid-back, but Cranberry is the theme of David Oneacre himself, as it feels more real, calm and down-to-earth, much like the face reveal in this video.

The segment at 11:02 describes your whole channel. Before discovering your channel, I had not given much consideration into 3D animation or modeling. But, your ability to talk about 3d software/modeling/animation is so easy to understand that it made me interested to learn more within 3D art. Especially your video comparing FK and IK techniques, I had no idea what either of those were then first watching the video but your way of teaching is so easy to understand that I stayed for the whole video!
As a 3D animator myself, I just wanted to say that you are my favourite UA-cam chanel now

i wanted to ask two things:
1: how are (or were) you able to balance your 8 hour a day job with animation? i'm interested in leraning animation myself, but i often come back home from work too tired to do anything, let alone do something as mentally taxing as learning animation
2: what are your opinions on online animation schools like AnimSchool or animation mentor?

1.) Balancing a full-time job with a big personal project like animation is very tough. I went a few years where I didn't really work on any personal projects, and I think that was because those jobs were very taxing and took a lot of my energy, like you said. My last job, however, was fulfilling enough to make it work, so the end of the day left me with enough energy to work on my own stuff again! (That said, I still sacrificed almost all of my free time for Doodley, so just watch out for that.)
2.) They seem legit. I've never signed up for one so don't take it as a straight recommendation from me, but I've seen a lot of animators on projects like Spiderverse list AnimSchool and other online schools as their education, and I have friends who were in it and loved it. I believe Animation Mentor also hires legit, seasoned industry pros as teachers, since it acts as a secondary income for those pros. You're *only* learning animation though, which can be a bit limiting career-wise.
And thank you!! I figured people would like the Jotaro figure, he kinda stands out there, hahaha.
I'd really like to see him talk about the changes in street fighter's artstyles with each game. Going from SF4 to SFxT, to SF5, to SF6 has been a really wild ride.

There’s a animation guild that trying to start establishing itself at my college and these type of videos are exactly what beginners and those interested in animation who aren’t animators would watch. Your answer is exactly what I experienced when I found your channel and watched your videos! I'm a huge fan of animation, and understanding animation fundamentals has greatly increased my appreciation and enjoyment of animation. It also allows me to identify what I don't like when I see an animation that feels "off"

Definitely keep doing what you do, I just recently started actually working on animations practicing them even though I’ve wanted to actually do it for a really long time, I just felt it was inaccessible. Your videos are super helpful and really interesting and fun.
I have a couple questions: How were you able to land jobs or work in animation, did you need to relocate or anything of that nature? Also how did you, if you were able to, rise the ranks in the industry?

My career so far has been remote, except for one internship early on in a Boston studio called Planet Nutshell. (Great guys!) I flew in a few times for meetings and get-togethers, but otherwise I worked from home entirely. Part of that is because some of it has been freelance (which is almost always remote) and some of it was because of the pandemic.
Honestly the career climbing comes naturally as you either change jobs, or be willing to take on responsibilities you weren't assigned but are capable of doing. It's difficult to put it down to a science, but if you are happy where you work and feel like it'd be worth it, try to be as self-motivated as possible and willing to arise to challenges. Don't put yourself in harms way for a job, i.e. don't crunch if you don't have to, it's just a job at the end of the day, but be willing to say "I can do that" if someone says they have an issue you know how to fix. Supervisors in general like self-motivation.

I tried Blender a long time ago. Used it to fix character models that were exported from console games.
Fixed a few Ratchet and Clank models and then imported them into VRChat.
Turned out great! However, I lost touch with Blender and that was the only thing I did with it.

11:56 There's a guy on UA-cam, Mr. Illustrated (Formerly SCP Illustrated, but he's dipping into more horror niches), and he does this a lot. His art is top notch quality, and he does this in his more modern videos. Very cool to see, I definitely recommend this channel if you want a great example of this in action.
