The Volkswagen Type 2 minibus is perhaps one of the most iconic vehicles ever built, and now VW has brought it back for the electric age in the form of the ID. Buzz. With a seven-seater version coming later on, the spacious ID. Buzz is a left-field alternative to plug-in SUVs. With very few people carriers left on sale, has the ID. Buzz finally made a case for MPVs in the modern family-car market? Rich finds out

You didn’t mention tested efficiency. Car’s winter test had the Buzz as worst on test at 2m/kWh dropping winter range to 150 miles, god knows what the GTX will be like. Great looking car but wish it had the Korean underpinnings with 800v architecture and V2L for camping/bbqs etc.
Not at any price, i think the time has come for legislation to make manufacturers provide actual buttons and knobs for all basic car controls. Using a touchscreen whilst driving is no different than using a mobile phone. All you are supposed to do behind the wheel is drive and concentrate on driving, not scrolling through menus trying to turn the heating up or down and taking your eyes off the road. Well thats the days rant over
What most reviewers miss on these EV reviews is the max loading weights of some of these cars. Big electric cars that can only carry 3-400kg as a lot of them do are useless when their petrol equivalents carry 6-800kg. I’m 6’2. My lads are even taller. We exceed weight limits for a lot of these cars once we add my wife let alone some luggage etc. Where as the petrol or diesel equivalent of some of the Mercedes for examples still have 1-200kg of loading weight above our body weight
Because it’s a useless statistic. Nobody shops cars based on their maximum weight capacity. Nobody except you maybe.
@@masterofwhales what are you on about? It wasn’t relevant previously because it wasn’t a factor but if you buy a Mercedes EQB 7 seater for example and find out it can only carry 400kg I think you’d find it an issue if it can’t carry your family wouldn’t you? It wasn’t something to look at previously because they all carried 5-700kg.
If you also have an accident over weight you’ll quickly find out how relevant it is and saying I didn’t care when I purchased it won’t cut it.
I’ve completely fallen in love with this car, I’ve never tried so hard to check my affordability for one before haha.
I passed my test now two weeks ago and I’ve been spending a lot of time searching for my car. My budget is around £10k max so that gives me options but as a result I’m struggling to narrow it down. I was very keen on Mini hatches but even the newer ones (post 2014) seem so condensed and the front windscreen looks tiny and the view constricted. Any reocmmendations? My second choice would be the Renault Clio. Anyway, more to the point I feel like I do need to start driving again very soon as I sense my confidence would take a hit if I leave it too long. Could you do a video on this at some point? Say, how long after your test should you wait to drive? The problem is I don’t have family/friends who have a car that I can use and be insured on, even hire car companies require you to have your license at least a year, so what options does that give you? Literally the only one is to buy your own car.
Get a Golf GtI
Great review. Would love to see more videos with Richard presenting. :)
Just bought my first SUV last year, 2nd hand diesel. Absolutely love it, the only people I hear giving out about SUVs are car reviewers.
Yes there's some snobbery amongst reviewers about SUVs
Because they are vehicles that are not used for their purpose or even are made to be used as an utility vehicle. It is like using a tank to pull a waggon, instead of a horse. Big, heavy, overpriced, bad fuel economy, expensive to repair and 99% not nearly used for its full potential.
Removal of the wind screen wiper stork is another idiotic decision from VW. It seems they still have in change of UI the same idiot who decided that touch buttons are a good idea. Probably some bean counter from financial department.
Stupid price but i love the funky looks
Carbuyer plzzzzz post more. I miss u 😢
A great overview Richard showing the good and could do better aspects of the car. There are too many niggles for me though and that infotainment system is my biggest gripe. The cost for me is over the top however the practicality is a big plus. I'm not that bothered about the performance but I agree it could/should be better. I think it looks great but I can't shake off the feeling that it has an air of new fashion about it just like the early SUV's did. I hate to say it but at the asking price initially its home territory is likely to be on the driveway of the more affluent areas and that's totally fine. I think it's also likely to be seen on the school run given the practicality. Load this car with a bunch of school children in the colder wet weather it will steam up the windows like a kettle on full boil so those fixed rear door windows will not help clearing the mist. If VW bring down the price, fix, no replace that infotainment system and add some clip open rear windows it may tempt more potential drivers. A performance and range boost would be nice as well. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Anthony. Agree with your concerns re the infotainment system and those rear windows. Small fixes that could make a good car great!
OOO I love the e46 sport touring, @0:19,
I saw you filming this. Why do you film in the exact same location as Auto Car.
Nice review.
But that car is just not what it should be for the best family electric mini van, cruiser.
It does nit have 3 Isofix points for the 2nd row seats, and that is because its not wide enough. Well pretty much every stupid SUV has the same issues but that should not be an excuse. It has a stupid parcel shelf in the boot. The folding seats do not pull up like in a Cady. The range is ... not enough. Try having a couple of kids in and a range of 200+ miles only. And you have to loose time every time on a long family trip.
Make it wider for a 3 Isofix chairs in the back, make it more efficient, or put more batteries, or both. And it might be worth the price.
Wish there was a hybrid model.
The Citroën e-Spacetourer comes with 9 seats at a cheaper cost. This 60 grand BUZZ only comes with 5 seats.
Don’t need an overpriced milk float either. Just buy a fast estate and save yourself 50%, get better handling and looks and similar if not more boot space. No brainer.
Similar boot space to an ID. Buzz? Good luck!
@@carbuyer again what all you reviewers miss is max loading weights on electric cars. It’s 490kg on this so the boot space is useless if you have a few good sized people in it. A good estate car like a Skoda superb has a huge boot, loads of leg room and 670kg of loading weight.
It's overpriced end of discussion. That's the Executives you'd want to watch out for.
Good luck with that, Estates are being discontinued by a lot of manufacturers.
This has 647kg loading weight?@@stevenham1937
Put a proper engine in it and get some control knobs going........dump the milk float bits.
So infuriating?
I have driven well over 10,000 miles in my ID.3 and think the infotainment system is terrific.
I have no problems with the heater controls whatsoever; indeed they work flawlessly.
I think you Motoring Journalists jump on a bandwagon.
Rear picture windows on a 60 grand car? You're have a laugh VW...
That's the difficulty with sliding doors...
Pop out or sliding are options VW could have pursued...
Where’s the model with the Porsche boxer six behind the back wheels?
Now that I’d pay that much for.
Since Tesla started all cars should hit 60 mph in 5 seconds. Why?
In daily driving, you don't need that, it consumes to much energy (while EV's are about efficiency) and is bad for wear on brakes and tires..
I'm happy to see a car that makes sense, a shame it's that expensive and it's a VW 😂
Nice VW advert!!
They got the perfect trip and holiday car, with the wrong propulsion. Imagine getting a 2L petrol or diesel in this baby, I will buy one immediately. But with only 200+ miles range....no, thanks.
200 minus range more like, on a cold day, large family with luggage, motorway journey. 160 miles?
Car Magazine did a multi EV range test a couple of months ago......this managed a paltry 166 miles on a charge, and it wasn't even loaded up.
@@malph9216 thanks for the information, I was being too kind obviously. But then it's only £60k, you have to accept a few compromises,,😃
Welcome to our Brave New World where those of average or below average means will be confined to "15 minutes cities" for the sake of the environment
Why won't any reviewers talk about the lack of places for rear passengers to rest their arms? The entire point of this vehicle is nulled. If four of you go for a long trip, the two in the back are going to be extremely fatigued by the time you get there and be uncomfortable the entire way. Nothing comfortable on door for outer arm and no centre armrest for inner arm. Ridiculous.
Why this over say…a Tiguan R?
The 3rd generation of this might be worth it.
I only wish Toyota bring back Estima as hybrid or full electric, or honda bring their MPV like the odyssey to Europe.I am a Fan of MPV.
EVOLUTION OF A FRIDGE.
Dead on arrival given that price
I beg to differ with a 18-24 months waiting list
Doesn't convince me mostly due to the price. I'd expect 3 isofix points and a higher quality cabin for that price. And why is it 20,000 pounds more than the commercial version? Surely it can't cost that much for some seats! VAT is not that much. It looks cheap and cheerful and at 35k it would be tempting. Maybe even 40k given the size. It can't argue it's case as a more environmentally friendly SUV either as it's efficiency is woeful. Only just over half that of a Tesla.
Like most recent VWs, it seems overpriced and overhyped. I expect a Chinese manufacturer to wipe the floor with it in the not too distant future.
I must be the only person that doesn't like how this looks, and i don't think you'll feel "cool" when your fumbling about with faulty chargers on the woeful charging network.
The fact that the ID BUZZ is targeting SUV buyers is the biggest compliment it can be given.
But it's also a great shame. This might as well be a Mercedes. Chinese EVs are going to wreck and shake up western auto markets beyond recognition.
£60k for a recycled plastic interior? Yeah right no chance VW. Those suv's you say this replaces. Mazda CX-60 Takumi, Leather upholstery with Maple wood and chrome trim. All the luxury you could want plus the tech £10k cheaper.
Many eco-conscious buyers don't want leather these days, and recycled materials are growing in popularity - with very little tangible trade-off.
@carbuyer it seems my reply about recycled (PET) plastic ( a product of the oil industry) being harmful to human health ( google it) has disappeared ? Just my opinion, buyers decide for themselves?
@@carbuyer I think that’s disingenuous. VW are trading on the exterior looks and heritage. The interior does look cheap and nasty, but recycled materials does not have to mean cheap. They are desperately trying to drive up margins by lowering build quality. Luckily, I see the new boss of VW sounds like he will bring the company in a new direction. Sadly, consumers seem to be falling for the low quality, high price products. The “Tesla effect” of removing buttons to the detriment of usability while driving is also pervasive across a lot of OEMs. Will someone have to die whilst changing their fan speed for everyone to wake up?
@nickw9626 hi, nick. I think you have summed it up perfectly there. If I'm paying that much, I expect a decent quality interior and this isn't it. On the strength of that alone I would walk away as it doesn't say much for the build quality of the rest of the vehicle.
60 grand are you having laugh not for me thank you 😲
mountain gave birth to a mouse...
you don't need a suv? the quality of the inside is so pathetic on this car, even a dacia duster feels premium compared to that crap of a car.
Bit of a Buzz kill if you ask me.
Could have been a really good var, but there are so many stupid design choices. Maybe the next one...
Var! We like that.
So you’re falling for the hype as well. Inside is an ocean of plastic, with terrible instrument panel and back windows that don’t open. All style over substance. And it is massively over priced. No thanks.
Put a Japanese engine in this thing and I might be tempted. But with VW being so expensive and unreliable, it seems like this thing would be a short and long term problem. Life is too short to wait at a charging station for hours at a time.
SUVs are trash. THIS is what a family car should be.
So overrated. Naff interior and software. Cancelled my order and saved myself a fortune!
First
You'll NEVER get 200 miles of range from that. 150 maximum period!
Dodgy software, awful range & overpriced.
A prime example of form over function. Looks great inside and out, loads of space, but........poor performance, ridiculous coloured interior, practically unusable infotainment and climate controls, expensive......And, according to Car Magazine who did a did a multi EV winter range test a couple of months ago, this managed a paltry 166 miles on a charge, and it wasn't even loaded up. I'll pass thanks.
ideal camper van
It's on the way!
wait...wut?!
this thing is horrible!
puts every other ev suv to shame?
how?
it has NO SPACE!
that rear cargp area is the WORST design i have seen.. that storage floor is a gimmick and even with it gone, the area is a disaster!...the seat fold flat.......NOT!
no other in floor storage without those AKIA boxes.
The price is unattainable.
worste VW paid for review EVER
learn better from the Chinese...
That price is just stupid
Compared against similar electric SUVs? Not really...
