And now we know why the US is only getting the LWB (likely needed for the bigger battery option) - however for European urban travel, this is more than fine, don’t you think?

No its not. 250 km is by far not enough. That will not sell as good as VW hopes. The battery is too small. In high winter its max. 150km with reserves on snowy roads. That may even be tight to reach the next charger outside of the big cities.

same result as Bjorn's. For camper/road tripping, Europeans too would prefer the large battery LWB variant. Otherwise, for all the rest it is fine (it took just 10min longer than MX raven, etron55 in Bjorn's 1000km challenge), considering the fast charging, .... for Muricans too!

As a current id4 owner in upstate NY, that range seems accurate for the temps during your test. In winter I see about 1.9 mi/kWh. In summer I see about 3.6 mi/kWh. VW batteries hate the cold.

When you get v2.4, the winter range goes up quite a bit. It reduces battery heating. This will affect the top performance since battery stays cold.

Interesting stat. I bet it is the same for most EV's in upstate NY because that is often a cold place in winter. I don't think VW batteries are particularly allergic to the cold. And 3.6 mi/kWh for a car the size of an ID4 is quite good really.

I'm in the UK. Currently have a model X. I wanted an ID Buzz until I realised the range was only 160miles at the speeds we travel. Yes it charges fast but our infrastructure isn't good enough
Most of our DC chargers are 50kw. There are still very few 150kw+ chargers and if you have children and travel in school holidays and weekends then you will find they all have big queues (except for the Tesla superchargers, but only 15 of the UK sites have been open to other cars so not that useful). Our main issue is we travel 110 miles each way to visit relatives 12-15 times per year. There is no charger at our destination (as our relatives do not have off road parking, and there is no public charging in the village of 5000. The only chargers above 50kw enroute have massive queues (usually 20 mins), the only chargers near the destination are 20 mins away and only 50kw). So we either charge slowly/with big queues enroute or have 1.5hrs less with relatives and drive to a charger. These are not acceptable options for spending over £50,000 on a vehicle and that's why we won't get an ID buzz. Cars of this price need a realistic 250 mile range at 75mph!

I have a similar situation in the Midwest US…. No infrastructure. 12 hour trip to visit relatives and we have to drive ICE because no chargers. Our Mach E has 250-300 miles of range, but there aren’t chargers in route or in the town we visit (population of 100k and no non-Tesla chargers)

That's crazy to hear. I understand the issues with American infrastructure, but in Europe? I live in an smallish town in Northern Europe, and one crossing has 10+ 150kw chargers. On the other side of the city there are more. Couple of more downtown and more are being built. Same goes for the whole country, and supercharger network here is meaningless. Theres' so many other options that work and are much cheaper than Tesla chargers. Even if I drove a Tesla, I would charge somewhere else. And so do many Tesla drivers as well.

@@scdi12 we enjoy the Model X. The interior is great looking with its white seats, and carbon fiber, and love the user interface and minimalism. Its downfall is it is too long and too wide, and too nice for transporting our muddy children and there bikes. Its had its fair share of issues too. 2nd only to the 2011 VW Golf estate we once owned. Also FSD on UK roads is somewhere between suicidal and useless. Still it handles nicely and I personally never get bored of hammering the accelerator (gas) pedal, even if my family are long past it.

@@lp3860 interesting. We have Tesla, Ionity (usually 4 chargers) and Gridserve (have very few sites but have taken over many motorway service station sites so hopefully they will be great in 5 years time). Aside from that 95%+ of all rapid chargers are 50/60kwh with a 2 or fewer chargers. The town my wife grew up in (Barnard Castle) got 6 new Fastned rapid chargers earlier this year. All were 50kwh. Absolutely useless if you want to charge quickly but fine if you are want to spend 2 hour on an out of town retail park on your trip.

I'm just experiencing winter conditions for the first time here in Europe with my Polestar SR SM, with "nothing" added. So no heat pump either. We've been having -5°C during the day, and as always, lots of short trips. Sometimes I've managed to pre-heat the car, sometimes not. But the initial few kms are horrendous, then everything settles down. I think it'll manage 23-25 kWh/100km at 110-120 kph, on a longer autobahn trip. That's actually fine by me. In warmer weather, it was noticeable that the winter wheels/tyres had almost no effect at all on consumption. Temps > 10°C with our normal daily use, the car does 16.5 kWh / 100km. Since the cold weather, the current long term average (what we happen to have stored on the long term trip meter) has crept up to 17.5 kWh / 100km. The temps I am experiencing are a few degrees lower than the ID Buzz test you did. I am a bit surprised about the ID Buzz consumption, because the ID 3 at least seemed to be a very efficient car. Still wondering how much advantage a heat pump brings? As you may know, to get rear heated seats in a Polestar, costs €4K because there are 2 options packages, and only 2. The one with the heated seats also includes a glass roof, heat pump and super-duper stereo, and a luggage space divider integrated into the boot floor!! Well. My conclusion with -5°C is we need heated seats and I'm getting some sort of 12V heated seat cushions for my poor kids. The thing I've learned about EV's in general and winter weather is, heated seats essential. VW have rather more flexible options lists. You can get some things without having to order a massively expensive package. Tesla just have everything as standard (this is the correct solution). Polestar have a pretty terrible combination of neither. Polestar need to add heated rear seats and a heat pump as standard in all models. If it adds 1500 € to the price, so be it.

Kyle, really enjoyed watching this as I loved the Buzz right from the concept. I’m thinking maybe it could be my ideal car at aged 63. I watched the charging performance and that significantly changes my views on range. I occasionally do road trips of circa 400-500 miles. I’d start my trip with a cheap overnight charge to 100%, then with a charging curve like this I could stop for 20-30 minutes and make a longer trip feasible and stress free. To help matters, I drive around at 55-60mph. If I swap out the 21 inch wheels for 19, do you think I could improve the range from 190 to 230 at my kind of speeds? Cheers Geoff

Thinking about my own experience and reading comments below too, this suggests the ID Buzz 77 kWh is generally range limited. You can subtract 25% - 30% range for "proper" winter weather for pretty much any EV afaik. On that basis, the ID Buzz is going to struggle to ever get much more than 300 km on a motorway run, even in great weather. That's really limiting. The big battery one will make a lot more sense. However, these are really expensive cars in the first place. They may make up for this a bit by charging really quickly. Obviously, the practicality of the interior, especially the LWB is a real selling point for many. Swings and roundabouts.

Björn Nyland did a test at 90km/h and got 225 miles at ~10 degrees. That's not bad at all, 115km/h is too fast and too inefficient for such a car. If you want to drive long distances with it you should rather go for 100km/h or you will have to charge more often.
In any case, it's not the efficiency of the powertrain that's to blame, it's identical to the ID models and they're all pretty efficient.

Now, I have a question for you regarding the steering wheel material. It isn't made of leather like the ID4 wheel is. But, rather a rubber-like material. I have a feeling that after a few years of 110F/33.3C cabin heat cycles (Typical So Cal summers). That the rubber like material will degrade and detach from the internal steering wheel frame. My sister's Ford 150 has a similar rubber material on her steering wheel and after 1 year of hot summer driving. The material twisted off the internal frame. I fear that the same thing could happen. Sorry for the long winded post. If you drive past Grimstad, Norway. Stop by Nogneo Brewery. My Cousins make great beer and Sake over there. CHeers

What was the temperature outside? High speed at very cold temperatures is the worst case almost besides going maximum speed. The cold air is denser and so reduces the range inversely proportionally to the density

Just a thought some people will customize the back half of the van, did VW think about that by creating mounting points to the floor or will we hear of people piercing the battery pack from the inside floor.

    • @abraxastulammo9940

I think the floor is elevated already (see production videos) and the second cargo floor/bench is screwed down, so there are some mount points.

Here in Northern Virginia last winter, a crazy traffic jam stranded thousands of vehicles on commuter highways for more than 24 hours in the cold. At least some electric vehicles ran out of battery and needed to be towed. A tow truck can bring an ICE vehicle a small can of gas to get them to the gas station. Is there an equivalent short-term solution for EVs? I’m thinking of a large portable battery. Would it be hard to charge from such a device?

  • @unclej3910

Norway's EV charging is way ahead of what we have in the USA. I just bought a 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV and drove it ~155 miles home. I estimate i only saw a few EV's, mostly Tesla's, out of hundreds of cars. I would say 98-99% were ICE vehicles.

Itd be interesting if you could do the same with 18" wheels and note the difference. I dont think thats terrible. What concerns me is that Canadian winters average temps much colder than this video has so how much more range would I lose? On the flip side, 90% of my driving is usually only 55mph.

    • @charliewhittuck
      @charliewhittuck Рік тому +1

Hey Robbie, Same here. we live in Norway, cold winters. Like he says, most roads here on long trips you bearly go over 50mph. There is no highway on the way to my inlaws (a 7 hour drive). Just ordered a buzz, but was going to get a model Y... Most of our daily driving isn't over 20km, and we have home charging etc. Tempted to cancel the order and get a Y for awhile. Wait for the 4wd and a bigger battery...

My first reaction was not too bad considering it has to heat that volume at 36 degrees. But then I have tons of questions. Is this using heat pump or conventional? Be keen to see the difference with smaller tires. But my bigger though is that US model with larger battery and longer WB can’t be expected to do that much better considering the extra weight. Based on ratio and proportion its about 200 in this test. But that doesn’t account for the extra weight. If I’m a betting man I’d peg the LWB larger battery at 180ish miles in this same test.
