  • I talk to Jake Shannon who is the founder of Scientific Wrestling and The King of Catch Wrestling Tournaments. We discuss how the history of submission grappling can trace its roots back to bored English miners who loved to gamble, how Japanese MMA emerged out of the theatrical and entertainment-driven world of professional Wrestling. The moment a quirky, professional wrestler bested the most famous grappling dynasty in all of fight sports and how that professional wrestling training helped him do it and could still even be used today in your own training practice.
    Jake has also authored the best selling book 'Say, Uncle!: Catch-As-Catch-Can Wrestling and the Roots of Ultimate Fighting, Pro-Wrestling, & Modern Grappling' and ghostwrote Billy Robinson's memoir titled 'Physical Chess: My Life in Catch-As-Catch-Can Wrestling" and was also the assistant coach to Billy Robinson, 2007 - 2014 and now has two instructions out on BJJ Fanatics covering catch wrestling submissions and takedowns.

    The Americana name was coined by the late great Rolls Gracie (rolls died in a hang gliding accident,he was the best gracie,he did jui jitsu & wrestled for brazil olympic team while bieng full juijitsu practitioner in the 60'&70's Way ahead of his time) Rolls started wrestling in brazil and learned the move from a american wrestling coach called Bob Anderson. So then Gracie named it the "americana" because he's Brazilian and an american taught it to him.

      Cool history. Thanks for sharing. I've heard it called a "Top Double Wristlock" or "Top Wristlock" for short as well as a "V Arm Lock" in Submission Wrestling circles. This has always been a favorite in Wrestling, specially from the standing position to disarm, takedown or submit someone. You can find old European wrestling paintings of this move done going back 500 years or so.

    Great interview! Jakes a great follow on Instagram, and I can personally vouch for things I’ve learned from his videos working on both the gym and competitive mats. Love to have him down in Australia sometime

    His history is not all right, just a bit of correction right from the top of the broadcast, the first modern Olympic games did not include freestyle wrestling, many wanted CACC but the Olympics committee thought submissions were too dangerous, so only a softened version of Greco-roman was included in the games. The next time they held the games there had been a new variation on CACC that had been developed that didn't allow chokes, joint-locks, of holding the head without an arm, which became known as freestyle and was included in the second modern Olympics.

      "the Olympics committee thought submissions were too dangerous"
      And judo training prohibits ne-waza submissions for child students, on the grounds of safety.
      Whereas BJJ child students are allowed to use submissions.

    Does Catch Wrestling have the intricate positional hierarchy that BJJ has?
    In BJJ there is no pinning, so being in the guard is not considered disadvantageous or losing. The guard blends in with the positional hierarchy of BJJ.
    Catch Wrestling allows winning by pinning, like judo, sambo, freestyle wrestling, and Greco Roman wrestling.

    Between Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, Judo, Sambo, and BJJ - BJJ is the “oddball”, because there is no pinning.

    Why do you think they call the key lock an “Americana”?
    It came from American catch wrestlers

    • @towardstar
      @towardstar 2 роки тому

      are you sure about that? In a latin american context "America" is used to refer to what North Americans call "The Americas." So you could say America and really mean Brazil. For America the country you would say United States or North America

    The BJJ “No-Gi” Division in tournaments - and the BJJ “No-Gi Class” - are effectively Catch Wrestling.

  • @perfectsplit5515
    @perfectsplit5515 8 місяців тому

    From a purely tactical standpoint, it seems that Catch Wrestling has an advantage over BJJ in that it has submissions that are illegal in BJJ.
    Just as BJJ has an advantage over judo in that it has submissions that are illegal in judo.
    Just as kickboxing has an advantage over boxing in that it has strikes that are illegal in boxing.

      Everybody is using. They just called it grappling. Wrestling + Submissions = Catch wrestling.
      Let's be honest, even the jiu-jitsu guys have turned Catch, with physical training, stand-up wrestling, bodyweight pressure, neck locks, bent arm locks, leg locks, spine locks, and all the other non-traditional locks which they used to despise as "dirty", as well as theatrics to bring in crowd, etc. Nobody does neat sweet Gracie jiu-jitsu anymore. They just called it bjj because of marketing.

      Might Mouse has been using Catch Wrestling for ages in the UFC and now One FC. His coach is Matt The Wizard Hume, he even has videos of him showing us cacc holds. Also Meisha Tate and a fair few others are well versed is Cacc, they don't talk about it ,much as it's their advantage against bjj.
