If this is a new Overwatch game they won't stop updating Overwatch 2 which is why they're hiring a whole new team for the new project. Current team would work on Overwatch PvP and nothing else. New team would work on this new IP and nothing else.

They literally had people with skills, experience, and familiar with business process at the company to start developing a new game. Doesn't matter if it's existing or new IP. Blizzard almost always copies ideas from other companies. Think about what game was recently successful? It's Helldiverse 2. In my opinion, Blizzard is designing a game of this type. I think it will be something like Helldivers with a Starcraft skin.

Enemies are all either human or omnic. The only 'monsters' in the game appear during non-cannon holiday events like Junkenstein's Revenge as new player skins and not as a unique model to fight on its own.
The problem that made developing a solid PvE experience for OW2 was that they tried to integrate the experience into the spaghetti code mess of the PvP game. And what's crazier to think about is that they rewrote all the code for OW2's updated engine, which was why some systems from OW1 don't exist in OW2, but didn't use the chance to make some of the code interactions less buggy.
Maybe Microsoft is using this as a response to Helldivers 2, a super popular and trending PvE game, being ONLY on PS and PC. So Microsoft could say, "here's a competitor to Helldivers 2... but you'll need an XBOX or PC to play it. No PS players allowed thank you"

When starcraft was mentioned my first thought was: are they thinking of doing what arrowhead did? do they intend to do fps game of starcraft now? I've lost faith in this indie game dev company. I'll be there to see how low can they fall now.
Im not so sure it's Overwatch but if it is, a big reason they'd move to making a new game is they can release it with a smaller base cast of characters and add more later.
It should have been a separate game from the beginning and a lot of their problems wouldn't have been problems. I am not going to get all pissy about it all over again because it doesn't serve any purpose. They basically have new management, or probably more accurately, can manage themselves now so maybe that was the impetus they needed to start it as its own project. It's just really unfortunate it couldn't have come when Overwatch had massive traction behind it as one of the biggest IPs in the world. Better late than never, I guess? 🤷♂🤷♂
Overwatch 3: Team of 4 you travel to different areas on the west side you have talon, on the east side you have Omnics. On the south side you have blizzard. Everyone can choose a hero that changes your appearance, armor, health, stamina. You can change your primary weapon with cosmetics some shoot explosives. We give all secondary weapons. Objective of the game is push talon and null sector off the main map. It’s going to be helldivers 2 but in overwatch setting
Not sure why everyone is thinking it's related to OW when they have even bigger, older franchises. Could also be a new franchise. Certainly isn't OW related because of the layoffs, denied bonuses, and the OW team saying they're only focusing on PVP OW2.
Honestly they should have hired a 2nd team to make the story overwatch 2 back in 2017 instead of splitting it between 1 team. I've always wanted more pve and I still think it would do really well. They must have a massive chunk of it done if this new game is overwatch pve
Overwatch 1 was meant to be mainly story-driven, PvE with a PvP side mode that Blizzard pushed too hard and then made a competitive league out of the game. The original idea was thee was supposed to be a story mode in Overwatch 1, but the entire team wanting to make a story mode, was constantly put down or forced to work on the PvP side of things, doing random balances and making things "fair" for competitive play. So, after being railroaded so hard, any attempt to make a story mode quashed, only allowing us to get things like the Blackwatch event and the Junkensteins Revenge story mode, they started to work on Overwatch 2. Which was supposed to be the story mode game, but Blizzard kept pushing them to do all sorts of stuff delaying the game, and just meddling endlessly until the entire creative team wanting to make a story mode left. Blizzard knew from the start that OW2 wouldn't be able to have a story mode, as the promises made, were ones made when they had a full team working on that side of the game with a passion for the idea. When everyone left, all they had was a skeleton crew of people who weren't established enough to do anything like find new jobs or be able to quit. So we ended up with all of them eventually quitting/being "let go" anyway and the Story mode cancelled. Unless they bring back Jeff Kaplan and the rest of the team that wanted to make a story mode for Overwatch, it will be trash. On one hand, I would say "no, blizzard isn't going to make another Overwatch, they have milked that cow enough, it's probably another game franchise." but on the other, I can see Blizzard being so money grubbing and greedy enough to try milk Overwatch more to extort money from people with lootboxes.
If they ain't getting Kaplan and the original staff back on boat I won't have any fate in this project. Call me cynical but; In my books I secretly hoped for them to lay off the replacement team in hopes to recruit the original team with it's original vision once again. I was huffing hard on copium and almost turned of the machine but thie news once again sparked by copium tank to pump in full capacity again! Tho it's highly unlikely that any of the ex devs would return or that blizzard would try the to take risk with this move but they were lately unpredictable so who knows what thex might be cookin like madscientists in their kitchen.
If they made opening cutscenes (for each season) that expanded certain areas of the story and the theme of each season, they could satisfy that connected storyline itch that people have.
All I can say is even if its not confirmed or announced at all yet... I hope its an Overwatch game THAT FOCUSES ON PVE AND NOTHING ELSE SO THAT NONE OF THE PVP PLAYERS CAN COMPLAIN ABOUT PVE WORK/RESOURCES SLOWING DOWN PVP CONTENT RELEASES. what's happening in the gaming industry at the moment when it comes to layoffs is the result of the pandemic when gaming heavily exploded with a lot of players and anything gaming was profitable which resulted in dev salaries to be heavily inflated. and now as things came back to normal but devs are still getting 2020 salaries, so now most companies are firing devs who got inflated salaries and rehiring other devs with the same job but offering much less salaries, this will most likely continue to happen for some time then in about a year or two everything will hopefully come back to normal

So like, a separate Overwatch PvE game could actually be the best way to go about it. They wouldn't need to worry about matching the balancing of the base game's PvP standards, and could change up how the abilities work without it being super complicated
We’ve seen them able to alter abilities without effecting game balance already tho with no effect on the competitive balance. Battle for Olympus, Mirror Watch, Hell the custom games have done that for a while now. This shows they still have the perk system in some form behinds the scene allowing them to alter powers relatively easily. Personally they just need to stop they already lost a lot of player good will and burned the player base. Just focus on Overwatch 2.
Yeah, almost like people warned them about this with OW2 and they decided to play coy with the public and be vague about the wording on whether or not it's a separate game (excluding the few times they lied to us and said it'd be a separate game), and fuck us over for years on OW1 development, and then they pull the switcheroo and delete OW1, while simultaneously not apparently developing OW2's PVE this whole time.
If this is for an existing IP, we can only hope it's not Overwatch. As much as I'd love to see it, it seems a terrible idea after how badly they've handled initial attempts at PvE Overwatch content. New Starcraft content would be far better received, or even something completely new.

I dont know how Stylosa does not understand the simple concept of firing incompetent people and hiring new ones.(If this is actually about OW) Based on how PvE ever felt in Overwatch, it was pointless to continue with the same people. You could argue that they should have done the same with virtually everyone related to OW and just outsource the whole IP to someone who can actually do it justice. Will see what happens, but i wont be surprised if the PvP department will be next to take a hit.
I'm not sure this game will be in the Overwatch IP. Any PvE game in any (new) IP would be described in the same way. They will all have seasons and group play of some sort; that Blizz' approach to all new games. For all we know they could pull another Titan and reuse the work of the cancelled survival game for a new IP here.

The layoffs are part of seizing the most out of quartely profits. For megacorporations in almost all industries, its not good enough to get record profits. You need to also get rid of as much expense (aka employees) as possible to make it even MORE profit, and then more and more and more forever and ever with no end in sight.
In my line of work, if there had been problems for 3 or 4 years, I'd be in the line of fire for it. It is not surprising in the slightest that they fired the overwatch pve crew. It's also completely unsurprising that the Activision side had less of a target on them. Sad, but true.
Business manager take here that's slightly harsh but goes back to my initial reaction with many of the layoffs: I honestly think they needed a clean slate because they were getting zero value out of their pve team (their fault). If you look at the portfolios most people posted they were genuinely pathetic for full time professional positions. Worked on once scene for years? Then you were not managed well and they wanted money on you.
i think theyre going to create a brand new world that exists within the overwatch world, but is adjacent to the current iteration. possibly alternate dimension or another timeline. that way they can have full creative freedom and not have the limitations put forth from overwatch.
The thing I don't get about the cancellation of PvE is the argument that the dev team couldn't come up with enough talents. Not every hero needs to have the same amount of talents. Just create what you can, listen to feedback and implement good ideas. It's PvE; there does not need to be balance. As long as every hero has a fair amount of unique talents; it'd be fine.
To be fair about them firing all the pve experience at blizzard and rehiring new people for a different game. can you blame them? Do you want the people who were releasing ow pve working on a new project like that. even the stuff we did get was.....underwhelming. So if this is just a return to Overwatch 2 PvE, they're taking two unnecessary steps: Firing OW2 PvE people and hiring new ones. Of course the latter could be done in a smaller scale, if they just didn't fire the previous ones.
They probably had people they wanted to axe, but did not know which people to keep. So they fired everyone. Now they can rehire people they like, or newer people for cheap.
We all of us haven't heard from devs talking about pve when they fired employees when they rehired the employees back this year, like season 10, I'm out.

I think it's Plunderstorm, an easy to port to console WoW experience, along the lines of Minecraft Story Mode. The Twitch numbers went crazy and it's the big Blizz money maker. It would make no sense to try Overwatch again after the hate and player loss the pve cancelation brought. Would be nice if it were for OW though.

Well, blizzard was under Bobby Cotick, firing of pve team happend under his management. Now blizzard was acquired by Microsoft and it seems that they are trying to fix this situation and deliver a better game. Still very sceptical, but I'm willing to give it another chance.

If this is a new Overwatch game they won't stop updating Overwatch 2 which is why they're hiring a whole new team for the new project. Current team would work on Overwatch PvP and nothing else. New team would work on this new IP and nothing else.

The fact they’re hiring for a PvE game doesn’t mean it’s an Overwatch PvE game
I doesn't matter, tbh. Skills are transferable. If you can make a fried egg, then pretty sure you can make an omelette. They literally had people with skills, experience, and familiar with business process at the company to start developing a new game. Doesn't matter if it's existing or new IP. Now they need to hire and onboard multiple people. IDK, but when I was studying strategic management, that was called a "fuck up". And even if they starting OW PvE all over again, they didn't need to replace ALL the team, they need to scratch previous project and start with new management. Artists and developers may stay the same, as it was management and creative vision problem with development hell that were in place.

The whole point from overwatch 1 to 2 is its own precautionary tale.
You know what game a company MUST make an mmorpg? BORDERLANDS... and i mean the entire freaking series, not only one or 2 games. Think about it, Borderlands by now is a big game series with a lot of storyline. If you ask about how we can get from one planet to another, well remember there is the Sanctuary spaceship from one of the games. And the solar map or galactic map could work in similar way to Mass Effects galactic map with zoom ins and zoom outs. Why no company takes the Borderlands game series and make an mmorpg out of it?

Blizzard almost always copies ideas from other companies. Think about what game was recently successful? It's Helldiverse 2. In my opinion, Blizzard is designing a game of this type. I think it will be something like Helldivers with a Starcraft skin.

Enemies are all either human or omnic. The problem that made developing a solid PvE experience for OW2 was that they tried to integrate the experience into the spaghetti code mess of the PvP game.
And what's crazier to think about is that they rewrote all the code for OW2's updated engine, which was why some systems from OW1 don't exist in OW2, but didn't use the chance to make some of the code interactions less buggy.
Maybe Microsoft is using this as a response to Helldivers 2, a super popular and trending PvE game, being ONLY on PS and PC. So Microsoft could say, "here's a competitor to Helldivers 2... but you'll need an XBOX or PC to play it. No PS players allowed thank you"

When starcraft was mentioned my first thought was: are they thinking of doing what arrowhead did? do they intend to do fps game of starcraft now? I've lost faith in this indie game dev company. I'll be there to see how low can they fall now.
Im not so sure it's Overwatch but if it is, a big reason they'd move to making a new game is they can release it with a smaller base cast of characters and add more later.
It should have been a separate game from the beginning and a lot of their problems wouldn't have been problems. I am not going to get all pissy about it all over again because it doesn't serve any purpose. They basically have new management, or probably more accurately, can manage themselves now so maybe that was the impetus they needed to start it as its own project. It's just really unfortunate it couldn't have come when Overwatch had massive traction behind it as one of the biggest IPs in the world. Better late than never, I guess? 🤷♂🤷♂

Overwatch 3: Team of 4 you travel to different areas on the west side you have talon, on the east side you have Omnics. On the south side you have blizzard. Everyone can choose a hero that changes your appearance, armor, health, stamina. You can change your primary weapon with cosmetics some shoot explosives. We give all secondary weapons. Objective of the game is push talon and null sector off the main map. It’s going to be helldivers 2 but in overwatch setting
Not sure why everyone is thinking it's related to OW when they have even bigger, older franchises. Could also be a new franchise. Certainly isn't OW related because of the layoffs, denied bonuses, and the OW team saying they're only focusing on PVP OW2.

Honestly they should have hired a 2nd team to make the story overwatch 2 back in 2017 instead of splitting it between 1 team. I've always wanted more pve and I still think it would do really well. They must have a massive chunk of it done if this new game is overwatch pve
Overwatch 1 was meant to be mainly story-driven, PvE with a PvP side mode that Blizzard pushed too hard and then made a competitive league out of the game. The original idea was thee was supposed to be a story mode in Overwatch 1, but the entire team wanting to make a story mode, was constantly put down or forced to work on the PvP side of things, doing random balances and making things "fair" for competitive play.
So, after being railroaded so hard, any attempt to make a story mode quashed, only allowing us to get things like the Blackwatch event and the Junkensteins Revenge story mode, they started to work on Overwatch 2. Which was supposed to be the story mode game, but Blizzard kept pushing them to do all sorts of stuff delaying the game, and just meddling endlessly until the entire creative team wanting to make a story mode left.
Blizzard knew from the start that OW2 wouldn't be able to have a story mode, as the promises made, were ones made when they had a full team working on that side of the game with a passion for the idea. When everyone left, all they had was a skeleton crew of people who weren't established enough to do anything like find new jobs or be able to quit. So we ended up with all of them eventually quitting/being "let go" anyway and the Story mode cancelled.
Unless they bring back Jeff Kaplan and the rest of the team that wanted to make a story mode for Overwatch, it will be trash. On one hand, I would say "no, blizzard isn't going to make another Overwatch, they have milked that cow enough, it's probably another game franchise." but on the other, I can see Blizzard being so money grubbing and greedy enough to try milk Overwatch more to extort money from people with lootboxes.

In my books I secretly hoped for them to lay off the replacement team in hopes to recruit the original team with it's original vision once again.
I was huffing hard on copium and almost turned of the machine but thie news once again sparked by copium tank to pump in full capacity again!
Tho it's highly unlikely that any of the ex devs would return or that blizzard would try the to take risk with this move but they were lately unpredictable so who knows what thex might be cookin like madscientists in their kitchen.
If they made opening cutscenes (for each season) that expanded certain areas of the story and the theme of each season, they could satisfy that connected storyline itch that people have.
All I can say is even if its not confirmed or announced at all yet... I hope its an Overwatch game THAT FOCUSES ON PVE AND NOTHING ELSE SO THAT NONE OF THE PVP PLAYERS CAN COMPLAIN ABOUT PVE WORK/RESOURCES SLOWING DOWN PVP CONTENT RELEASES. Whole new team dedicated to nothing but PvE and Overwatch lore.

what's happening in the gaming industry at the moment when it comes to layoffs is the result of the pandemic when gaming heavily exploded with a lot of players and anything gaming was profitable which resulted in dev salaries to be heavily inflated. and now as things came back to normal but devs are still getting 2020 salaries, so now most companies are firing devs who got inflated salaries and rehiring other devs with the same job but offering much less salaries, this will most likely continue to happen for some time then in about a year or two everything will hopefully come back to normal

So like, a separate Overwatch PvE game could actually be the best way to go about it. They wouldn't need to worry about matching the balancing of the base game's PvP standards, and could change up how the abilities work without it being super complicated
We’ve seen them able to alter abilities without effecting game balance already tho with no effect on the competitive balance. Battle for Olympus, Mirror Watch, Hell the custom games have done that for a while now. This shows they still have the perk system in some form behinds the scene allowing them to alter powers relatively easily. Personally they just need to stop they already lost a lot of player good will and burned the player base. Just focus on Overwatch 2.
Yeah, almost like people warned them about this with OW2 and they decided to play coy with the public and be vague about the wording on whether or not it's a separate game (excluding the few times they lied to us and said it'd be a separate game), and fuck us over for years on OW1 development, and then they pull the switcheroo and delete OW1, while simultaneously not apparently developing OW2's PVE this whole time.

You know OW2 was supposed to be for PvE while OW1 was supposed to be for PvP. But we all know what happened then.
If this is for an existing IP, we can only hope it's not Overwatch. As much as I'd love to see it, it seems a terrible idea after how badly they've handled initial attempts at PvE Overwatch content. New Starcraft content would be far better received, or even something completely new.

Based on how PvE ever felt in Overwatch, it was pointless to continue with the same people.
You could argue that they should have done the same with virtually everyone related to OW and just outsource the whole IP to someone who can actually do it justice.

I'm not sure this game will be in the Overwatch IP. Any PvE game in any (new) IP would be described in the same way. They will all have seasons and group play of some sort; that Blizz' approach to all new games.
For all we know they could pull another Titan and reuse the work of the cancelled survival game for a new IP here.

The layoffs are part of seizing the most out of quartely profits. For megacorporations in almost all industries, its not good enough to get record profits. You need to also get rid of as much expense (aka employees) as possible to make it even MORE profit, and then more and more and more forever and ever with no end in sight.
Will Story be continued with actual Talent System that was promised? Hmm unsure at the moment for the future of overwatch.
In my line of work, if there had been problems for 3 or 4 years, I'd be in the line of fire for it. It is not surprising in the slightest that they fired the overwatch pve crew. It's also completely unsurprising that the Activision side had less of a target on them. Sad, but true.
Business manager take here that's slightly harsh but goes back to my initial reaction with many of the layoffs: I honestly think they needed a clean slate because they were getting zero value out of their pve team (their fault). If you look at the portfolios most people posted they were genuinely pathetic for full time professional positions. Worked on once scene for years? Then you were not managed well and they wanted money on you.
i think theyre going to create a brand new world that exists within the overwatch world, but is adjacent to the current iteration. possibly alternate dimension or another timeline. that way they can have full creative freedom and not have the limitations put forth from overwatch.
The thing I don't get about the cancellation of PvE is the argument that the dev team couldn't come up with enough talents.
Not every hero needs to have the same amount of talents.
Just create what you can, listen to feedback and implement good ideas.
It's PvE; there does not need to be balance.

So if this is just a return to Overwatch 2 PvE, they're taking two unnecessary steps:
Firing OW2 PvE people and hiring new ones.
Of course the latter could be done in a smaller scale, if they just didn't fire the previous ones.
They probably had people they wanted to axe, but did not know which people to keep. So they fired everyone. Now they can rehire people they like, or newer people for cheap.
We all of us haven't heard from devs talking about pve when they fired employees when they rehired the employees back this year, like season 10, I'm out.

I think it's Plunderstorm, an easy to port to console WoW experience, along the lines of Minecraft Story Mode. The Twitch numbers went crazy and it's the big Blizz money maker. It would make no sense to try Overwatch again after the hate and player loss the pve cancelation brought. Would be nice if it were for OW though.
I think it'll just be slightly better missions than what we have right now. I'm not getting my hopes up after Overwatch 2, WOW Dragonflight, and D4.

Well, blizzard was under Bobby Cotick, firing of pve team happend under his management. Now blizzard was acquired by Microsoft and it seems that they are trying to fix this situation and deliver a better game. Still very sceptical, but I'm willing to give it another chance.
