Am I the only one who finds the D2 cinematics substantially darker than even their new grotesque cinematic of Nayrelle having her arms torn inside her imagination? I don't know how to describe it but I feel like it's something akin to "show don't tell", like the D4 cinematics are trying to show you grotesque scenes while the D2 cinematics makes you think of the darkness that looms in the background (what brought you to this scene) and the consequence of the scene
D4 goes for shock factor and in the end it's only as good as your willingness to let them shock you with gore. While leaving nothing for your own imagination to assume. D2 shows the stakes and allows you to understand for yourself what is happening and what is being unleashed. The limits of your own imagination will always be more terrifying than any horror scene painted for you.
No, not the only one, thou I love D4 cinematics, D2 was more psychological, TRUE terror, no gore but more about consequences, and that shit sticks with you, also the VA even back then was INCREDIBLE
There is no skill tree, it funnels you into a few preselected build that is determined not by you but your equipment , no meme builds or magic find builds
Clearly have not played game . Aspects and uniques and Mythics now allow ANYTHING to be viable up till highest pit stuff that less than 5% of players even reach , so you can do anything practically, Barb this season is worst class but people running around enjoying it.
I've got 12k hours in POE since Ritual league so you could say I'm a pretty hardcore POE player, but I thoroughly enjoy Diablo 4 for what it is. It's going in the right direction. ARPG's are basically just gear chases and the gear chase in Diablo is just that - a chase. You don't HAVE to play the meta builds in D4, I didn't, I played Rock Splitter thorns and I've had 100 hours of fun in the Spiritborn DLC already. I guess I'm too old now for all the drama and can finally just sit and enjoy games for what they are, if I didn't like a game, I wouldn't play it and be content that I tried it without complaining about them 'forcing' me to buy anything. It's just a nice ARPG to chill out to after an intense Path of Exile league, a good inbetweener, it was never going to be anything more than that for me anyway.
Its NOT just about the "Gear Choice" its about the ARPG mechanics, gameplay loop, end game, gear, level design, boss mechanics, etc. EVERYTHING in D4 is hur dur brain dead smash button be done. Can you supposedly do your "own" build sure, but you sure shiet aint doing end game content, and THAT IS the ISSUE. When the game entirely forces you to do a "meta" build thats an issue.

I completely agree with you big dawg. Weirdly it's kind of brave for you to take this stance. Feels like a lot of other creators are pretending like it's good for some reason. It quite literally puts myself and my girl to sleep. We still play because it's coop and fun to arpg together, but she starts yawning about an hour in and I was struggling to keep my eyes open. There's just no exciting random stuff that can happen. D4s awful release drove me to PoE in Oct of last year and since I've dropped over 1000 hours in it. What's crazy is I can run the same exact map with the same exact atlas and scarabs HUNDREDS of times back to back and it never gets boring. It's the variety and the randomness that diablo just lacks. Everything in d4 just feels like the same hawg with different lipstick on it. There's just no variety or excitement. I'm rambling now but thanks for being honest.
For me the most unfortunate design decision in D4 is tying build abilities to item slots in the form of legendary affixes. The problem with this is when you find a new piece of gear you can't just equip it, you have to massage it into a copy of the item you already have in that slot in order to preserve your build. Interestingly, PoE2 is moving away from that model by separating skill gems from gear sockets, suggesting that the PoE devs realized that forcing people to have to replicate their old gear before using new gear was a problem with PoE1.
Nice to see some content creators speaking truth, I’m a diablo fan, primarily d2 lod . I got excited when they mentioned stat squishing, bringing numbers down, makes by the game a bit harder, items dropping g less frequent. I played the beta test and in 3 days, uninstalled the game realizing they didn’t change anything that I actually didn’t like. Though they definitely teased that they were. In the end, too much dmg bloat from every angle, nothibg is balanced, legendaries have no excitement. D2r still has me hooked and enjoying the game far more than d4 ever will. Which is bad when you think of the graphics and how old the game is. Makes me think of new Disney Star Wars, hype tye nostalgia and flatten it like a bug under a foot.. it’s crazy how simple but fun d2 is, they would have won the hearts if they built on this and changed what didn’t work in todays standards

I uninstalled D4 after work tonight. The expansion didn't do anything to bring me back. Like you said at the start of the vid: it just seemed like same old same old. I tried at least.
I pre paid for the xpack and wish I didn't. Before I played POE I didn't realize what a good game was. Now I'm just trying to suffer on and see the end game of D4. Not sure how long I can take it though.
i’m actually enjoying it more than season 2 (the last time i played) i feel that there setting up the next expansion and most likely final to be absolutely big and mind blowing story finale
I'm way more interested in the story than anything else. I liked D4 story on release. This expansion just didn't do it. It didn't make sense, it was underwhelming, the betrayal didn't even hit home cause it didn't even make sense. Urivar was introduced as this great villain, then disappears for the whole campaign until you kill him near the end. Mephisto wasn't even there at the end. Just his pet dog. I feel like they could've played this whole story out with more detail throughout the previous seasons, and then the expansion could've focused on killing a more fleshed out Urivar character, and killing Mephisto (or whatever they have planned next). All the gibberish talk felt like just that: gibberish. There was way too much of it and it didn't even flow together right. Usually made up languages are slightly based on real languages. This sounded like a toddler trying to say a tongue twister.
Thank you for calling out how terrible the quests are in this game. I don't think nearly enough people have been talking about but it's been a problem since before the game came out. I remember playing through the act one Beta with a friend and less than an hour in we were both shocked that any game would be released in 2023 with quest design that terrible. "Walk to this person, stand still while they talk, walk to this other person and stand still while they talk, now walk to a circle on the world map where you talk to the first person again and stand still while they talk, and then you fight a boss that falls over in five seconds" isn't just unacceptable quest design, it's EMBARRASSING.

My breaking point was was having to farm resources in order to keep rerolling masterwork. It seemed like only the shit attributes were leveled up in the final masterwork, forcing me to start over again
Man, D2 is just goated for cinematics! You might get this reference, but for me it's like being a Shimano guy. Even if they aren't making the best reel's anymore, I am still going to want the new one. That said, there are some things better, but a lot that isn't yet. The evade build is actually super fun, reminds me of some build's we make in POE, but it's the rest of the game that is kind of just ok and they are already nerfing evade anyway. It still can do the dps, but the point was the zoomies. Speaking of POE, my problem with POE2 is they are releasing it smack dab in the middle of the rut. I won't be able to hit it on launch :(
I was curious enough to check out the season but not curious enough to buy the expansion. It felt like they overtuned Spiritborn just to twist arms to make the purchase.

I will say that I didn't even realize I had finished the campaign. I also started a new spirit born, when I realized quill volley was everyone else too and people ruining is with bugs..... so started a gorilla focused build and 6 hours later goblin inc uploaded a gorilla build that was broken....making it seem like I was copying his idea again....I liked offline D2 where I had no idea what other people were doing.
Recently had a choice of spending some side money on this expansion or giving cyberpunk a chance. I choose cyberpunk. Upon my first playthu I realized what a actual skilltree is and how it affects actual build diversity. I use to play necro and my two options were bonespear or kinda minion build .. but that was it. If you're telling me this expansion is more of the same, glad I passed.

The cherry on top of everything, the best builds for the Spiritborn are all based on bugs. The most popular build is getting nerfed today so even the best gameplay builds of this game aren't intentional by the devs lol
Fwiw, I preorded D4 a mile out. By the time I played the beta, I refunded. Then, a friend and I had days off during release and we rebought it knowing it was gonna disappoint. It did. I imagine this is how you felt buying the expansion. It honestly makes me sad, because Diablo quite possibly my favorite IP. Hate to see it in this state. Edit: We refuse to buy the expansion and are looking forwars to PoE2. Youre not alone at all, brother.
Diablo 2 was like a super scary R rated horror movie and Diablo 4 is like a PG-13 generic action movie for kids. Think of it like this. Diablo 2 is like Friday the 13th movies and Diablo 4 is like Shark Boy and Lava Girl.

I was disappointed with the lack of campaign content in VoH. The expansion cost as much as the base game and as Hawg said, we didn't even get to see the ACTUAL Mephisto. I didn't even realize the campaign was finished. I was like ok why are they having us run through tutorials of stuff we've already done as part of the campaign? Where's the true Mephisto? Once I got Torment unlocked, that's when I realized "Oh, that's it?"
It did not cost as much. The base game was $70, plus an extra 25 or 30 for the first season and early access that almost everyone fell for. This expansion was $40. You could have spent the price of the base game for pre-order just for a pair of cosmetic wings, one outfit for the new class, and a cat mount and armor. Stop getting suckered on cosmetics etc and paying 75% more for them. The campaign did suck. But you can't be serious you didn't realize it was over when you get a challenge pop up that says completed vessel of hatred campaign.
@@legi0n47x I never seen a challenge pop up. I'm not saying it didn't, I could easily have missed it because I ignore most of them as they really don't mean anything for the most part. I may have exaggerated on the actual price. I bought the top package on both, having played every one of the Diablo games on original release being the main reason, and if I remember correctly those prices were almost the same. Doesn't change the fact we didn't get our money's worth in my opinion is basically what I meant.
So 90% of the blizz "partner" content creators who had early access all said this expansion "was worth$" - and that it was a good to great upgrade/QoL/story to the game. I guess we got duped by the so called Diablo Partner Content Creators. At least we have hawg to keep it real.
My 2 biggest things i cant stand with diablo is the builder/spender and enemy level scaling with the player. Not to be that guy that compares PoE and Diablo, but it feel good once you been grinding gear in poe, you can go back and do some white/yellow maps to farm essences and you feel godly. I never had that with diablo or any game with level scaling
It's because modern Blizzard doesn't understand the sub-genre. For example, game design like generators/spenders, main stat, coefficients of a unified damage source, etc... are all meant as a means of homogenizing item and skill power to simplify balance especially in the cases of role based MMOs. In other words the design is directly antithetical to character building and customization, which is really what Diablo is suppose to be about.
I can’t wait until you try LE. It’s got so many way you can set up your builds. The game is still new so it has so much potential for unknown builds. It’s a different game then POE.
this game might tempt D4 fans who can't play PoE. But if you are comfortable in PoE, then what is the point in LE? The plot is worse. Building is worse. Content is worse. From the stylistic point of view - to each his own, but LE is much closer to D3 than to D2.
Im 100% with hawg. I havent played the game since season 1. I caved and bought the expansion expecting to fight meph and keep up with the story line but of course we get let down again. This will be the last one i buy im done with blizzards shit
I don't think it's really the content creators fault. I mean it won't ever stop that they make content on the games. It's more that the game doesn't have enough depth to feel like your figuring anything out. Like Diablo 3.5 doesn't really have build diversity because their goal was cast a large net for money rather than focusing on the core audience and realizing that audience does like some puzzle tinkering
level 25 and you complained? thats litterally 1 hour. and D2 you run out of resource instantly until like nightmare where you fix it w leach....no builds? I found the evade on my own just like you. its fixed though and WAS fun for a week, now its on to something else (overpower gorilla is taking a while to get to and its been fun) its fine to play it a few weeks and be done. Did you do the tower? undercity?
My only problem i can't do the dark citadel because I am part of no clan. The game is a little better with more to do... but it still feels boring... I feel it needs an end game story to follow from the beginning to endgame til you have completed all the journey n what not... idk
Dude they got me too, and I completely relate to this whole ass video. I been playing some kind of Ale & Tavern game, Gas Station Simulator, and Robocop and been having a better time. It just sucks because back in the day the end goal seemed different... the games were made for the player, and now it seems as though they are made for how long they can keep pumping out money.

the whole lore never actually continues past d2, it went in a whole different direction and introduced many ideas that shouldn't exist while removing proper items and stat allocations, in total d2 had more affixes than d4 has affixes and legendary powers combined x2, gear has 16 affixes it can roll, late game farming is killing a boss who drops nothing but unique items, its hardly RNG to get a build going, swap builds, no important decisions to make that affects gameplay, its felt like a spin off to me ever since d2 lod ended, felt more like a mobile version.. when D2 devs made their game they designed the game as to want to keep you in the game, where d3/d4 gave so many options to get you off the game quicker.

Tried D4 beta, understood then it was gonna be very similar to D3 but with better graphics. Haven't bought it, not gonna. Id rather give my money to Grinding Gears, where they still have a soul and care about creating fun games for gamers.
I was super excited to play vessel of hatred for the story and expecting to see some nostalgic return to diablo 2's jungle map ending with ofc an epic fight vs mephisto that ultimately led to the prime evils escaping somehow as a buildup for the next expansion. What we actually got was a 6 hour therapy session for Neyrelle with absolutely no cinematic, epic moments, no ending to the story, no epic boss fights. Just washed out, soft modern lazy writing about the spiritual realm and our feelings. This is the worst diablo campaign I have ever played, but I like the rest of the expansion, spiritborn is really cool and fun and the new zone is awesome. Now about the build variety and stuff: I don't really care about finding a new build or discovering something new because whenever I try that I end up doing no dmg and having no fun, but it really sucks that each class in D4 only has 1 good build to play and everyone plays the same thing.

The space bar build is stupid, it actualy ruins a lot of the online part of the game. I did all 3 of the raid wings, and I was bored out of my fucking mind, why you ask? Because I went with 3 spirit born with that build. I had to do nothing besides mechanics for doors and bosses. I couldn't kill anything if I wanted to, it was already dead. 1000000% boring and brain dead.
Please, write out your exhaustive list of permissible games so that everyone can agree with you and stop wasting their lives. The more condescending the list, the better. That'll really pack the morality into video game choices to hang our lives on.
I play D4 when Im time constrained and have fun doing that. I can't do that in POE. I play POE when I have more spare time to burn and I also have fun I cant do that in D4. I think depending on your playstyle you can enjoy any or both.
It's not bad for someone that plays casually, definitely isn't something you're gonna sit and no life for thousands of hours. I do agree with the whole thing of the partnered streamers that shits gotten old
Ya this summed up my opinion pretty well. Diablo has been going down hill in almost all respects since D2:LOD. Graphics (not style) are about the only upgrade. Oh maybe UI? Even then that's not a sure bet.

I also noticed the ridiculousness of the argument about guides. In poe, even without guides, without reaching ubers and similar content (where guides play a role), you will have much more activities and fun. I am also amused by how two arguments coexist: 1. We are parents with 7 children and 5 jobs 2. Why limit yourself to one rpg? You can play all of them. Damn, even without children and working from home, I can't find enough time and desire to play even the best representatives of genres, and here people are ready to spend a couple of weeks on Diablo...
I haven't bought VOH and haven't played D4 since the start of season 1, they lost me back then. I'm looking forward to play Farming Simulator 25 with my dad. Besides that, I'm having much more fun with $10 games for almost 10 years. The last AAA I bought was Starfield and that's shit too.

They ruined a lot of the fun aspects of vanilla. Season 4 onwards they made yellows trash (from four affixes to 2; 4 actually made yellows meaningful compared to D3; I thought they would keep it now we can temper and have aspect entries saved on salvage to the codex) and now it's all about greater affix items (with multiple greater affixes). Also, when they reworked the resistances a 2nd time to be reduced along with armor per difficulty it made it so much more grindy. Now you need to grind 300 paragon levels separately (I thought we weren't copying D3?; same for the damage power creep from D3 which they promised we were not going to get). Also, why item power 750 anything gear wise in Torment 1? It should always be tier 800 item power items in Torment 1-4 onwards (or whatever the max tier for item power is). Making T3 or T4 defacto better is just their way to slow progression down to get you playing more. By making lvl60 the new max getting us to play multiple characters a season should be the objective to keep us on. The game was altered to be for the streamers that play for well over 10 hours a day. I am enjoying the game, but they soured it for me progression and item hunt wise.
I played all of em. I abandoned d3 before reaper because im a druid and necro lover, came back for a bit for necro and left again after I realized they hated real minions. I like the game. It's been fun, every season I've played. Disliked some, but completed the season journey each time. I enjoyed VOH story for the most part. I dislike all the "my friends" talk though. These NPCs aren't my friends and I couldn't care less if they killed them all. Sorry you disliked it man. TBH I'm not sure what it is you are looking for. I don't feel you are being honest in your perception of it, and if you are I don't think you would be easily pleased with any game out there. I get that it's not a 10/10 game but you seem to be absolutely trashing on just because it's not.
POE makes D3 and D4 feel like babies first ARPG with their lack of depth or variety when it comes to your character development and endgame activities, it's just the same thing every season with no wiggle room, hopefully it will one day build into something more as it just isn't worth investing any time in at the minute sadly.
I'm honestly glad I didn't spend money for VoH. After hearing the story was pretty trash and that gameplay only slightly improved it made me feel good. Now I've got an extra $40 to spend on a supporter pack for poe2
I'm with you mostly on the game, Hawg. It is a strange thing that you start out in the game with the generator/spender thing, which I hate... But as you get further down the road, the generator becomes much less. It makes the most of the run like a slog, and I don't think it helps the game enjoyment. Would have loved mana potions instead of the crude way of generating mana. I think Blizzard, and in particular, Diablo has no soul anymore... it's an empty vessel of what it used to be.
The fact that there is a PTR and the meta is pretty much solved before the season starts is super demotivating. I think D4 is much better game than before, but I cannot F play the same sh*t that was solved by no-lifers 1 week ago.
If they went open source with D4 and let all the modders and players create content for it, it would become a good game. But as long as blizzard is developing, it will always be trash.
Raxx convinced me there was $40 worth of fun to be had so I bought it. I think I got $15 worth of fun before I started to realize that I was just fighting the same "goop nasty" monsters over and over with the most broken build in the game ($piritborn), and it is a sad sad sad Diablo game. They introduced Runewords only to fuck it up. I feel like I am just fighting hordes of the same bullshit monsters over and over. I saw that Llama guy say he simply ran through the expansion without fighting anything, so I tried that for a while just to get through the story, but the story is absolute boring trash, and I began to ask myself why I was speedrunning my $40? This is pablum and I should have known better. I think Raxx would play anything with the name Diablo on it now.
The game is a Cluster-F because they, Blizzard, don't know what they are doing. They build something and it's horrible when they release it and they have to go back and re-work it completely. I like Rax and a lot of the other folks content but Blizzard only listens to them so the end product is kinda catered towards that type of player. XP is so fast now you can't even enjoy the main campaign at a proper pace anymore, not that it was that enjoyable to begin with. The main boss in Scosglen... at launch that fight was pretty 'tough'. It's the only fight that sticks out in my mind as something that was enjoyable about the campaign. The dude on the mount traveling through the city. In season 5 I fired up the campaign again just to do it and the boss was instantly nuked. They changed everything about the game so far, except the base campaign. Had they 'released' this as 'early access' I wouldn't have been so annoyed but it is what it is. The only good thing about D4 is the quality of graphics, and a few of the voice actors, most of them are actually pretty bad, or had bad direction. Let's be honest, graphics quality doesn't make a game. I've had more fun in Dwarf Fortress 8 or so years ago than almost any triple A game. It's truly a shame what the activists have done to entertainment over the last decade or so.
I think it is unfair to suggest that the streamers that play D4 are doing it for other reasons. I always hate that attitude that if you like something then maybe there's something off with you. People like Raxx and DM already showed they DGAF about Blizzard's sponsorship. Raxx burned Diablo Immortal to the ground and DM would constantly trash D4 when he felt like it. Also there are people that are old D2 players that still play D4 like Kripp, who also quits on games when he doesn't like them. I think sometimes you just have to accept things might not be for you, it doesn't make those guys lesser Diablo players. I think what is appealing about D4 is it is like WoW, you can turn your mind off most of the time and just enjoy it. It's not really competing with PoE and nor is it trying to, just like Runescape is not competing with WoW or Smash Bros is not competing with Tekken. At the end of the day though Blizzard sought to make a more accessible game (that actually does get harder the more you climb) that will have more players because of that. Your point about POEs guides is alright but most casual player pull up POE guides and are overwhelmed by the guide. It's just not a simple game and that will always scare some people away because some folk just want to come home from work and turn their minds off and watch demons explode on the screen and pick up rare loot. That's why the game is making billions of dollars and people will keep coming back to it.
People who get special privileges and incentives from game studios such as being flown out to play the game or simply getting early access to it are going to have favourable reviews, or at the very least watered down and sugar-coated criticisms. This applies to people who were flown out to Path of Exile's studio as well. Their opinions should be taken with a grain of salt even if the game does actually end up being good. Even if you think they are nice guys, losing those privileges affects their income as content creators.

I don't know how to describe it but I feel like it's something akin to "show don't tell", like the D4 cinematics are trying to show you grotesque scenes while the D2 cinematics makes you think of the darkness that looms in the background (what brought you to this scene) and the consequence of the scene
D4 goes for shock factor and in the end it's only as good as your willingness to let them shock you with gore. While leaving nothing for your own imagination to assume.
D2 shows the stakes and allows you to understand for yourself what is happening and what is being unleashed.
The limits of your own imagination will always be more terrifying than any horror scene painted for you.

I've got 12k hours in POE since Ritual league so you could say I'm a pretty hardcore POE player, but I thoroughly enjoy Diablo 4 for what it is. It's going in the right direction. ARPG's are basically just gear chases and the gear chase in Diablo is just that - a chase. You don't HAVE to play the meta builds in D4, I didn't, I played Rock Splitter thorns and I've had 100 hours of fun in the Spiritborn DLC already. I guess I'm too old now for all the drama and can finally just sit and enjoy games for what they are, if I didn't like a game, I wouldn't play it and be content that I tried it without complaining about them 'forcing' me to buy anything. It's just a nice ARPG to chill out to after an intense Path of Exile league, a good inbetweener, it was never going to be anything more than that for me anyway.
Its NOT just about the "Gear Choice" its about the ARPG mechanics, gameplay loop, end game, gear, level design, boss mechanics, etc. EVERYTHING in D4 is hur dur brain dead smash button be done. Can you supposedly do your "own" build sure, but you sure shiet aint doing end game content, and THAT IS the ISSUE. When the game entirely forces you to do a "meta" build thats an issue.

I uninstalled D4 last night. The DLC was a solid 2.4 out of 5. I've moved back over to POE.

I completely agree with you big dawg. Weirdly it's kind of brave for you to take this stance. Feels like a lot of other creators are pretending like it's good for some reason. It quite literally puts myself and my girl to sleep. We still play because it's coop and fun to arpg together, but she starts yawning about an hour in and I was struggling to keep my eyes open. There's just no exciting random stuff that can happen. D4s awful release drove me to PoE in Oct of last year and since I've dropped over 1000 hours in it. What's crazy is I can run the same exact map with the same exact atlas and scarabs HUNDREDS of times back to back and it never gets boring. It's the variety and the randomness that diablo just lacks. Everything in d4 just feels like the same hawg with different lipstick on it. There's just no variety or excitement. I'm rambling now but thanks for being honest.
For me the most unfortunate design decision in D4 is tying build abilities to item slots in the form of legendary affixes. The problem with this is when you find a new piece of gear you can't just equip it, you have to massage it into a copy of the item you already have in that slot in order to preserve your build.
Interestingly, PoE2 is moving away from that model by separating skill gems from gear sockets, suggesting that the PoE devs realized that forcing people to have to replicate their old gear before using new gear was a problem with PoE1.

Nice to see some content creators speaking truth, I’m a diablo fan, primarily d2 lod . I got excited when they mentioned stat squishing, bringing numbers down, makes by the game a bit harder, items dropping g less frequent. I played the beta test and in 3 days, uninstalled the game realizing they didn’t change anything that I actually didn’t like. Though they definitely teased that they were. In the end, too much dmg bloat from every angle, nothibg is balanced, legendaries have no excitement. D2r still has me hooked and enjoying the game far more than d4 ever will. Which is bad when you think of the graphics and how old the game is. Makes me think of new Disney Star Wars, hype tye nostalgia and flatten it like a bug under a foot.. it’s crazy how simple but fun d2 is, they would have won the hearts if they built on this and changed what didn’t work in todays standards

i’m actually enjoying it more than season 2 (the last time i played) i feel that there setting up the next expansion and most likely final to be absolutely big and mind blowing story finale
I'm way more interested in the story than anything else. I liked D4 story on release. This expansion just didn't do it. It didn't make sense, it was underwhelming, the betrayal didn't even hit home cause it didn't even make sense. Urivar was introduced as this great villain, then disappears for the whole campaign until you kill him near the end. Mephisto wasn't even there at the end. Just his pet dog. I feel like they could've played this whole story out with more detail throughout the previous seasons, and then the expansion could've focused on killing a more fleshed out Urivar character, and killing Mephisto (or whatever they have planned next). All the gibberish talk felt like just that: gibberish. There was way too much of it and it didn't even flow together right. Usually made up languages are slightly based on real languages. This sounded like a toddler trying to say a tongue twister.

Thank you for calling out how terrible the quests are in this game. I don't think nearly enough people have been talking about but it's been a problem since before the game came out. I remember playing through the act one Beta with a friend and less than an hour in we were both shocked that any game would be released in 2023 with quest design that terrible. "Walk to this person, stand still while they talk, walk to this other person and stand still while they talk, now walk to a circle on the world map where you talk to the first person again and stand still while they talk, and then you fight a boss that falls over in five seconds" isn't just unacceptable quest design, it's EMBARRASSING.

My breaking point was was having to farm resources in order to keep rerolling masterwork. It seemed like only the shit attributes were leveled up in the final masterwork, forcing me to start over again

Man, D2 is just goated for cinematics! You might get this reference, but for me it's like being a Shimano guy. Even if they aren't making the best reel's anymore, I am still going to want the new one. That said, there are some things better, but a lot that isn't yet. The evade build is actually super fun, reminds me of some build's we make in POE, but it's the rest of the game that is kind of just ok and they are already nerfing evade anyway. It still can do the dps, but the point was the zoomies. Speaking of POE, my problem with POE2 is they are releasing it smack dab in the middle of the rut. I won't be able to hit it on launch :(

I will say that I didn't even realize I had finished the campaign. I also started a new spirit born, when I realized quill volley was everyone else too and people ruining is with bugs..... so started a gorilla focused build and 6 hours later goblin inc uploaded a gorilla build that was broken....making it seem like I was copying his idea again....I liked offline D2 where I had no idea what other people were doing.

Upon my first playthu I realized what a actual skilltree is and how it affects actual build diversity. I use to play necro and my two options were bonespear or kinda minion build .. but that was it. If you're telling me this expansion is more of the same, glad I passed.

Fwiw, I preorded D4 a mile out. By the time I played the beta, I refunded. Then, a friend and I had days off during release and we rebought it knowing it was gonna disappoint. It did.

Diablo 2 was like a super scary R rated horror movie and Diablo 4 is like a PG-13 generic action movie for kids. Think of it like this. Diablo 2 is like Friday the 13th movies and Diablo 4 is like Shark Boy and Lava Girl.

I was disappointed with the lack of campaign content in VoH. The expansion cost as much as the base game and as Hawg said, we didn't even get to see the ACTUAL Mephisto. I didn't even realize the campaign was finished. I was like ok why are they having us run through tutorials of stuff we've already done as part of the campaign? Where's the true Mephisto? Once I got Torment unlocked, that's when I realized "Oh, that's it?"
It did not cost as much. The base game was $70, plus an extra 25 or 30 for the first season and early access that almost everyone fell for. This expansion was $40. You could have spent the price of the base game for pre-order just for a pair of cosmetic wings, one outfit for the new class, and a cat mount and armor. Stop getting suckered on cosmetics etc and paying 75% more for them.
The campaign did suck. But you can't be serious you didn't realize it was over when you get a challenge pop up that says completed vessel of hatred campaign.

I may have exaggerated on the actual price. I bought the top package on both, having played every one of the Diablo games on original release being the main reason, and if I remember correctly those prices were almost the same. Doesn't change the fact we didn't get our money's worth in my opinion is basically what I meant.

So 90% of the blizz "partner" content creators who had early access all said this expansion "was worth$" - and that it was a good to great upgrade/QoL/story to the game. I guess we got duped by the so called Diablo Partner Content Creators. At least we have hawg to keep it real.
My 2 biggest things i cant stand with diablo is the builder/spender and enemy level scaling with the player. Not to be that guy that compares PoE and Diablo, but it feel good once you been grinding gear in poe, you can go back and do some white/yellow maps to farm essences and you feel godly. I never had that with diablo or any game with level scaling
It's because modern Blizzard doesn't understand the sub-genre. For example, game design like generators/spenders, main stat, coefficients of a unified damage source, etc... are all meant as a means of homogenizing item and skill power to simplify balance especially in the cases of role based MMOs. In other words the design is directly antithetical to character building and customization, which is really what Diablo is suppose to be about.

I don't think it's really the content creators fault. I mean it won't ever stop that they make content on the games. It's more that the game doesn't have enough depth to feel like your figuring anything out. Like Diablo 3.5 doesn't really have build diversity because their goal was cast a large net for money rather than focusing on the core audience and realizing that audience does like some puzzle tinkering

My only problem i can't do the dark citadel because I am part of no clan. The game is a little better with more to do... but it still feels boring... I feel it needs an end game story to follow from the beginning to endgame til you have completed all the journey n what not... idk
Dude they got me too, and I completely relate to this whole ass video. I been playing some kind of Ale & Tavern game, Gas Station Simulator, and Robocop and been having a better time. It just sucks because back in the day the end goal seemed different... the games were made for the player, and now it seems as though they are made for how long they can keep pumping out money.

Poe 1 isn't perfect, GGG is trying to fix it, but at least it is still playable than diablo 3, which blizzard stopped/slowed down updates, I never thought diablo 3 was the successor to diablo 2

the whole lore never actually continues past d2, it went in a whole different direction and introduced many ideas that shouldn't exist while removing proper items and stat allocations, in total d2 had more affixes than d4 has affixes and legendary powers combined x2, gear has 16 affixes it can roll, late game farming is killing a boss who drops nothing but unique items, its hardly RNG to get a build going, swap builds, no important decisions to make that affects gameplay, its felt like a spin off to me ever since d2 lod ended, felt more like a mobile version.. when D2 devs made their game they designed the game as to want to keep you in the game, where d3/d4 gave so many options to get you off the game quicker.

Tried D4 beta, understood then it was gonna be very similar to D3 but with better graphics. Haven't bought it, not gonna. Id rather give my money to Grinding Gears, where they still have a soul and care about creating fun games for gamers.

I was super excited to play vessel of hatred for the story and expecting to see some nostalgic return to diablo 2's jungle map ending with ofc an epic fight vs mephisto that ultimately led to the prime evils escaping somehow as a buildup for the next expansion.
What we actually got was a 6 hour therapy session for Neyrelle with absolutely no cinematic, epic moments, no ending to the story, no epic boss fights. Just washed out, soft modern lazy writing about the spiritual realm and our feelings.
This is the worst diablo campaign I have ever played, but I like the rest of the expansion, spiritborn is really cool and fun and the new zone is awesome.
Now about the build variety and stuff: I don't really care about finding a new build or discovering something new because whenever I try that I end up doing no dmg and having no fun, but it really sucks that each class in D4 only has 1 good build to play and everyone plays the same thing.

Because I went with 3 spirit born with that build. I had to do nothing besides mechanics for doors and bosses. I couldn't kill anything if I wanted to, it was already dead. 1000000% boring and brain dead.

I play D4 when Im time constrained and have fun doing that. I can't do that in POE. I play POE when I have more spare time to burn and I also have fun I cant do that in D4. I think depending on your playstyle you can enjoy any or both.
It's not bad for someone that plays casually, definitely isn't something you're gonna sit and no life for thousands of hours. I do agree with the whole thing of the partnered streamers that shits gotten old
Ya this summed up my opinion pretty well. Diablo has been going down hill in almost all respects since D2:LOD. Graphics (not style) are about the only upgrade. Oh maybe UI? Even then that's not a sure bet.

I also noticed the ridiculousness of the argument about guides. In poe, even without guides, without reaching ubers and similar content (where guides play a role), you will have much more activities and fun.
I am also amused by how two arguments coexist:
1. We are parents with 7 children and 5 jobs
2. Why limit yourself to one rpg? You can play all of them.

I haven't bought VOH and haven't played D4 since the start of season 1, they lost me back then.
I'm looking forward to play Farming Simulator 25 with my dad.
Besides that, I'm having much more fun with $10 games for almost 10 years. The last AAA I bought was Starfield and that's shit too.

They ruined a lot of the fun aspects of vanilla. Season 4 onwards they made yellows trash (from four affixes to 2; 4 actually made yellows meaningful compared to D3; I thought they would keep it now we can temper and have aspect entries saved on salvage to the codex) and now it's all about greater affix items (with multiple greater affixes). Also, when they reworked the resistances a 2nd time to be reduced along with armor per difficulty it made it so much more grindy. Now you need to grind 300 paragon levels separately (I thought we weren't copying D3?; same for the damage power creep from D3 which they promised we were not going to get). Also, why item power 750 anything gear wise in Torment 1? It should always be tier 800 item power items in Torment 1-4 onwards (or whatever the max tier for item power is). Making T3 or T4 defacto better is just their way to slow progression down to get you playing more. By making lvl60 the new max getting us to play multiple characters a season should be the objective to keep us on.
The game was altered to be for the streamers that play for well over 10 hours a day. I am enjoying the game, but they soured it for me progression and item hunt wise.
I played all of em. I abandoned d3 before reaper because im a druid and necro lover, came back for a bit for necro and left again after I realized they hated real minions.
I like the game. It's been fun, every season I've played. Disliked some, but completed the season journey each time. I enjoyed VOH story for the most part. I dislike all the "my friends" talk though. These NPCs aren't my friends and I couldn't care less if they killed them all. Sorry you disliked it man. TBH I'm not sure what it is you are looking for. I don't feel you are being honest in your perception of it, and if you are I don't think you would be easily pleased with any game out there. I get that it's not a 10/10 game but you seem to be absolutely trashing on just because it's not.
Also how is this a money farm? 10 dollars every three months and 50 a year for expac? That's absolutely nothing compared to some games.
POE makes D3 and D4 feel like babies first ARPG with their lack of depth or variety when it comes to your character development and endgame activities, it's just the same thing every season with no wiggle room, hopefully it will one day build into something more as it just isn't worth investing any time in at the minute sadly.

I'm honestly glad I didn't spend money for VoH. After hearing the story was pretty trash and that gameplay only slightly improved it made me feel good. Now I've got an extra $40 to spend on a supporter pack for poe2

I'm with you mostly on the game, Hawg. It is a strange thing that you start out in the game with the generator/spender thing, which I hate... But as you get further down the road, the generator becomes much less. It makes the most of the run like a slog, and I don't think it helps the game enjoyment. Would have loved mana potions instead of the crude way of generating mana. I think Blizzard, and in particular, Diablo has no soul anymore... it's an empty vessel of what it used to be.

The fact that there is a PTR and the meta is pretty much solved before the season starts is super demotivating. I think D4 is much better game than before, but I cannot F play the same sh*t that was solved by no-lifers 1 week ago.

If they went open source with D4 and let all the modders and players create content for it, it would become a good game. But as long as blizzard is developing, it will always be trash.
I uninstalled D4 about 6 weeks after I played it. A list of chores. The expansion doesn't seem any better.
Raxx convinced me there was $40 worth of fun to be had so I bought it. I think I got $15 worth of fun before I started to realize that I was just fighting the same "goop nasty" monsters over and over with the most broken build in the game ($piritborn), and it is a sad sad sad Diablo game. They introduced Runewords only to fuck it up. I feel like I am just fighting hordes of the same bullshit monsters over and over. I saw that Llama guy say he simply ran through the expansion without fighting anything, so I tried that for a while just to get through the story, but the story is absolute boring trash, and I began to ask myself why I was speedrunning my $40?
This is pablum and I should have known better. I think Raxx would play anything with the name Diablo on it now.
The game is a Cluster-F because they, Blizzard, don't know what they are doing. They build something and it's horrible when they release it and they have to go back and re-work it completely.
I like Rax and a lot of the other folks content but Blizzard only listens to them so the end product is kinda catered towards that type of player. XP is so fast now you can't even enjoy the main campaign at a proper pace anymore, not that it was that enjoyable to begin with. The main boss in Scosglen... at launch that fight was pretty 'tough'. It's the only fight that sticks out in my mind as something that was enjoyable about the campaign. The dude on the mount traveling through the city. In season 5 I fired up the campaign again just to do it and the boss was instantly nuked. They changed everything about the game so far, except the base campaign. Had they 'released' this as 'early access' I wouldn't have been so annoyed but it is what it is.
The only good thing about D4 is the quality of graphics, and a few of the voice actors, most of them are actually pretty bad, or had bad direction. Let's be honest, graphics quality doesn't make a game. I've had more fun in Dwarf Fortress 8 or so years ago than almost any triple A game.
It's truly a shame what the activists have done to entertainment over the last decade or so.
I think it is unfair to suggest that the streamers that play D4 are doing it for other reasons. I always hate that attitude that if you like something then maybe there's something off with you. People like Raxx and DM already showed they DGAF about Blizzard's sponsorship. Raxx burned Diablo Immortal to the ground and DM would constantly trash D4 when he felt like it. Also there are people that are old D2 players that still play D4 like Kripp, who also quits on games when he doesn't like them. I think sometimes you just have to accept things might not be for you, it doesn't make those guys lesser Diablo players.
I think what is appealing about D4 is it is like WoW, you can turn your mind off most of the time and just enjoy it. It's not really competing with PoE and nor is it trying to, just like Runescape is not competing with WoW or Smash Bros is not competing with Tekken.
At the end of the day though Blizzard sought to make a more accessible game (that actually does get harder the more you climb) that will have more players because of that. Your point about POEs guides is alright but most casual player pull up POE guides and are overwhelmed by the guide. It's just not a simple game and that will always scare some people away because some folk just want to come home from work and turn their minds off and watch demons explode on the screen and pick up rare loot. That's why the game is making billions of dollars and people will keep coming back to it.
People who get special privileges and incentives from game studios such as being flown out to play the game or simply getting early access to it are going to have favourable reviews, or at the very least watered down and sugar-coated criticisms.
This applies to people who were flown out to Path of Exile's studio as well. Their opinions should be taken with a grain of salt even if the game does actually end up being good. Even if you think they are nice guys, losing those privileges affects their income as content creators.
100% agree, well said. Im fully enjoying D4, but do i wish it had more D2 elements, hell yea but thats in the past and i accept that.
