A Daytrip To Forget? Pathfinder Railtours To Skegness With 40145 & 37706 On The Jolly Whistler

- A railtour on a summer Saturday to the seaside, sounds good in practice but we took 8.5 hours to get there (we went the long way) and as the tour featured Mk2 coaches it wasn’t as much fun as usual (no opening windows so no locomotive noise) we were scheduled 2.5 hours in Skegness (I personally didn’t think much of the town but each to their own) we then ended up being stuck on the station over an hour after our departure time due to points failure at Skegness, I ended up ending the tour 1.5 hours late and after locomotive and time issues the tour was capped at Crewe not Manchester meaning some people had to get home on service trains.
Why do I do this to myself?
Because I love it!
Memories of my teenage years and it’s one of the few things me and Liam do together.
Much beer was drunk and much fun was had.
Looking forward to the next one.
Wow they really went out of their way to give you the genuine British rail experience by being 45 minutes late lol. At least you had a couple of drinks.
Definitely a lot of drinks 🤣 fun day tho!
@@rodneyperkins1057 Not the full BR experience without warm and limp Cheese & Tomato sandwiches wrapped in cellophane 😂
Even more of a farce as East Midlands Railway refused access to the water supply on the platform. So it was arranged to bring some by road in the hope the hosepipe would be long enough to reach from the road to the Carriage Sidings (it wasn't). So truck went off with water and any litter on the train, as EMR also refused to allow them to use the bins at the station!
The points failure was probably down to lack if maintenance - the sidings rarely being used, and it was almost a year since anything was last down there (another Railtour).
After the 40 and 37 were repositioned, it was intended to be backed into the station after the 1722 local service departed. In the event this ran 20 minutes late. Then when finally backing into the station from the sidings, there was a signal issue. Luckily that was sorted relatively quickly!
How very odd! Why were EMR so unhelpful? I did see the kitchen coach leaving loads of bags of rubbish on the platform though so they definitely got rid of some.
@@AgathaAndAnything EMR have a rather negative attitude to Charters. There was a problem when the Northern Belle ran a charter from here a couple of years ago. Staff normally stay on board overnight, but EMR refused permission to allow this at Skegness (was never a problem before).
The bags of rubbish were collected and taken away by the van which brought the water supply.
@peterskegness3204 thanks for clearing that up. 👍
Fair comments, but this was a very disappointing day for me, only saved by the great company I was with. No loco noise at all (I was in coach E) and I only heard the 40 working on Sunday when I watched videos of our train. "Luxury" 1970s stock with dicky a/c, which was just horrible. Disappointed to find out to how much shoving the 37 had done. Being on the train, I had no idea that was happening. Station staff at Skegness were a disgrace, especially the para-military toy soldiers. This was my last railtour with Mk2D/E/F stock, I'll save my money, stay at home and watch the videos instead.
Agreed, we had an entertaining coach C but yes coffins are definitely no fun on tours!
Another good vid Ricky, wow those coaches really took me back to my teen years, a proper old BR style day out.
I’ve been to Skegness, not my kind of place really, smell of doughnuts, burgers, grease, cheesy seaside music and screaming kids, a bit like Blackpool and Rhyl.
Enjoyable vid though mate, thanks.
Yeah they were my era of coach too but no fun to be in with no opening windows
“Well, may I ask what you expected to see in Skegness?
Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically?”
Funny enough I sent my Mrs a pic of the beach and put “you can see the sea, it’s over there between the land and the wind farm” (referring to how far out the tide was!
I enjoyed the bits of the tour where we were moving, but quite glad to be away from Skegness, and the station staff there were most unfriendly. For all the apparent loco problems, arrival in Skegness was on time, and time was maintained once free of the single track congestion in Lincs. Never seen so much of myself in a youtube video!
@@kiles99 I think you’re bang on, the coffins weren’t exactly a highlight either…
I take your point about the lack of engine noise ambience. These tours will attract less and less gricers and bashers, but based on our neighbours across the aisle...............😂
We had much entertainment from the coach itself 🤣
If you dont like Skeg why go?
For the train trip, it was from my local station and I enjoy trains, the destination was irrelevant to me 👍
2 1/2 hours in Skeggy is absolute pergatory imho😂Dedication indeed.
2.5 plus 45 minutes on the platform 🤣 it’s a good job I was half cut
@@andyblake1849 Even worse living in Skegmess, I can tell you 🙈😂 The overgrown platforms are a good clue as to what to expect, lol
@@peterskegness3204 Lol. I live not too far away & worked there for a while.
Did the people who had to get themselves back get any money refunded.
The tour company organised free onwards travel on a normal service train
Presumably this was British Rail's dress rehearsal for their upcoming return...?
Haha yeah probably 🤣
Wrong coaching stock...to much sound insulation no open windows...good honest opinion...tour companies need to listen
Yep have to agree it spoiled it but unfortunately the mk1 stock seems to be on borrowed time I guess
Rancid coffins
Absolutely
Maybe you could do something else instead of drinking don’t you think you have a problem???
Nah it’s ok I had a KFC too 🤣
