  • Why do we hoard so much film? Have you ever not enough film with you for a shoot? What gives with the current state of photographic chemistry production and WTF is there a chicken in this video!

This is a terrific and existential topic for film photographers. I think your tone is spot on - not paranoid or doomsday, but asking questions the answers to which are key.
B&W has always had the edge in many ways over color. So many chemicals could be created from readily available formulas. I have used Photographer’s Formulary to purchase bulk chemicals, with recipes and a triple beam scale to recreate historical photo chemicals.
As for travel, I leave on Saturday for a two week trip to Japan with my Polaroid I-2 as my only camera. I am bringing enough film for 2 packs (16 shots) per day. Polaroid has no official vendors in Japan (!!). I’ve been in touch with both Polaroid USA and Polaroid EU, who have been very responsive and helpful. I hope to be able to find a pack of three while there (Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Yokohama), but decided bringing a Pelican case of film (hand inspected!) is my best option.
    Wish me luck!
Thanks for another great video! 👍🏼

I’ve just gotten into this art. My stockpile isn’t the largest but half of my mini fridge is indeed dedicated to Polaroid. Personally I like to store the special edition packs, I’m saving B&Y Duochrome for Christmas, retinex for parties and now the basquait for when I go to NYC. Besides that yeah I just buy from Walmart when I need it.

It is indeed great that Polaroid is more readily available -- always having to ship was a pain.

I never used to be a film hoarder, but when all the local grocery stores in the region started liquidating their films, I filled-up the freezer! And strangest thing is it wasn't by fear of running out. It was just because I couldn't let the deal pass me by. When will anyone ever find an 8 pack of in date Kodak Gold 100 for just 1$ ? Right now I have about 200 rolls left. As for chemistry, I decided to settle on Rodinal and HC-110 because of their exceptionally long life. So no worries there. But I do have a book I compiled of just about every chemical formula that has ever been produced. That way, I can always get out of a rut if the market goes bad. And in the end, I can always Caffenol my way out of a shortage.

In grad school. I under estimated my film budget. And with the tail end of my thesis in sight, i had to use a dslr and color match it to ektar. It did ok! But i wont go through that again.

The question is out of place, but … why “gentle” agitation sometimes… and “vigorous” other times? .. Kodak recommends 7 vigorous inversions in 5 seconds for tri-x … why? … is it a contrast issue or about disrupting a laminar boundary?

It’s about ensuring that a particular film developer combo gets proper development and a set CI-- BUT it is very different for scanning vs darkroom and there are other considerations regarding tonality that are user specific- being consistent is the key.

So, these 3 refrigerators are just for the next 3 months? Seems like a roll per day? Or more?

Only the "new" 3D-scanners ruin your Polaroid film when you're going through security. I have sent my film through multiple times on the same trip without any issues over the past few years. In Amsterdam however, they lied about the new machines and it cost me two or three packs. You live and you learn >-) I think i'll stick to the hand check from here on out as well.

I’ve been see in the new 3D scanners more and more and at this point I’m not risking it - so far the TSA has been great.

That's good to hear. Do you find them to be amenable and helpful? I've read on various forums that it's usually not a problem, but it differs quite a lot from airport to airport. Lisbon is supposedly one of the few airports where they flat out refuse to hand check film. There are a couple of others but I forget where. @@FIGITALREVOLUTION

So far so good- recently JFK, LaGuardia, Phoenix and Albany were spot on.
