Thanks, Louis! Your Instagram videos have inspired me to have a go at protecting it in the ground. I'm hoping I can keep it protected from the worst of the cold. I have the lights, but now just need to wait for the extension lead to come so I can get that set up. But I think the bucket of water has helped a bit and I'm sure the wall helps a lot too 👍
@@PeterEntwistle It’s looking good! As it grows into the next season as well it’ll get tougher🙌🏾🙌🏾 The wall is definitely a bonus of the spot you planted it in and will definitely help out a lot!

I just popped outside and found it to be rather mild, and I could sense the humidity in the air (where I am it is overcast and drizzly, with cloud moving from West to East direction). I felt comfortable in just my hoodie. Which is in stark contrast to last night, which was several degrees below freezing and you can feel the rawness of the cold against the face. The sky conditions were crystal clear, then a very thin layer of cirrus cloud arrived, which caused an amazing and rather rare effect called a moon halo. I managed to take a photo of the moon halo, complete with planet Saturn.
Thanks! Yeah, I'm glad I managed to get them all tucked away for the winter. I just hope we don't have a repeat of last December now 🤞. I'm also glad the protection I gave the Clementine seemed to work well too. I don't think it would work below -3°C but I'm hoping with some lights I can keep it frost free 🤞
It's a good set-up Peter, that little heater will be ideal for temperatures around freezing but I'm sure you'll need the bigger one temporarily for sharp temperature drops. I think the bubble wrap insulation will make a big difference
Thanks, Brett! Yeah, you are right the small one probably will be fine for dips down to around -3°C any lower than that then I'll probably put the other heater on too. It struggled below -4°C last year in that smaller greenhouse, so I imagine in this size it will need help before that. I could always move the small one nearer to the shelf on very cold nights to keep the plants over there a little warmer. But the new heater does get very warm when on full power. In fact, I might have to move a few plants further away from it as I wouldn't want them getting burnt or the dry heat dehydrating the leaves.
@@PeterEntwistle I'd aim for a minimum of zero, I think any embryo fruits you've got will spoil below zero and abort or be dried out inside if they stay on due to the cellular damage. Although electric heaters are normally thermostatic they are generally very vague without accurate temperatures marked on them. They generally just have a silly snowflake on the dial that's meant to represent freezing point. I'd recommend an electronic thermostat with a built in plug socket. You simply set the thermostat to say 0 or -1 and plug the heater into it ( set at a higher temperature ). The thermostat then turns the heater on and off much more accurately and saves electricity. You also can't be caught out by a sudden cold snap

Yeah my heater doesn’t have any values on it it’s just a dial that says min and you turn it up until it clicks on and it turns on when it goes below that current temperature. I did look at one of those thermostatic plugs, but it said they aren’t accurate when used with a fan heater, although it didn’t elaborate on why.
Thanks, I've already had to use the new heater as we've been getting lows of -3°C the last couple of nights. I was hoping to not have to use it until late December, but at least I know the setup seems to work for cold spells. Should be going milder again next week 🤞
@@PeterEntwistle do you use smart wifi switches to control your heater? I have few smart switches to control the fans, lights, heaters…. They are very useful. You can setup rules if X then Y…. I monitor humidity and temp. I even get alerts based on certain condtions.
@@samMTL514 I would like to automate it to some extent, although I don't think the wifi signal reaches the bottom of the garden, so I'll probably have to look at boosting the signal before getting any smart devices set up. But it would be handy knowing what the temperature is inside it without having to go outside in the middle of the night and melt the ice on the zip so I can open it up haha. What devices do you use for temperature and humidity monitoring?
@@PeterEntwistle I use SONOFF devices, low cost Chinese product. They have basic model (on/off only no sensor) and TH model (on/off with sensor). The basic model good for fan, lights, etc. TH model good for heaters. The app lets you set rules based on temp, humidity, time, sunset, sunrise, etc. One TH sensor can be linked to many basic model. Sonoff just introduced soil moisture sensor. I have not tested it.
@@samMTL514 Oh yeah, I have heard of that brand. Great to hear they work well for you. I might have a look at them 👍. Do you know if any of them are rated for outdoor use? It can get quite damp in the greenhouse.
Awesome setup! I'd think that 2kw heater would heat the space up pretty quickly, so you'd probably only need to put it on for 5 minutes an hour or something, to keep it above 0C.
