Glad you posted an update on your grafted citrus. From all the citrus I own, New Zealand lemonade is my favourite. It has so much to offer. Prolific producer, it’s constantly flowering and setting fruit while existing fruit continue to size up. It also seems to do well indoor under less than ideal light conditions.

To be honest that looks like a reasonable success rate Peter although its it's scary how long they can stay dormant for before they show signs of life. I've not had any success with bud grafts yet although i only tried a couple lol. Shame the meiwa haven't done anything yet. Is that your roseapple still alive in the camera shot behind the lemonade lemon ?
Thanks, Brett! Of course, many of the buds I grafted failed. For most of the ones I cleft grafted, I attempted chip budding to also. I also didn’t show all the Poncirus rootstocks which I have failed to graft successfully to lol. Although at least I can use them again. Yeah, some citrus grafts seem to take forever to start growing. Yeah, that was the rose apple that Sham gave me in the background. Don’t think it’s grown at all yet, but still seems healthy at least lol 😂
@@PeterEntwistle ah yes I was thinking that was your original Canarius roseapple lol, I forgot Sham had sent you one 🤣. In fact that might be a wax apple / wax jambu which are a bit more tender than roseapples. To be honest Nirmala might have the right idea in taking a mature grafted citrus from You Garden like her lemon and converting it to a pomelo. The difference in vigour when you convert a mature established plant is incredible BUT of course you don't get that super hardy rootstock you are aiming for.

You've taken to citrus grafting remarkably well, Peter. I love your Satsuma grafts and New Zealand Lemonade. The NZL does seem to take a while to get going from young graft, this has been my experience also .... Cleft grafts and chip bud grafts are my favourite also.
Thanks, Dom! Yeah, I've been having fun grafting some of the citrus, especially when it's a new variety I otherwise wouldn't have been able to purchase a tree of. Yeah NZL is one I've been really excited to try growing. I really hope this little grafted tree makes it through the winter and continues to grow next year 🤞
You are getting quite proficient at grafting, Peter. Soon you'll be able to graft with your eyes closed 😂 It is reassuring that the scions survived that long journey to England. How long did they take to arrive? Did they defoliate at all en-route?
Haha, I don't think I'd ever be able to graft with my eyes closed, unless I want to lose a finger lol 😂 So the NZ Lemonade lemon and Valencia seedless orange scions that came from Australia, did take 2 or 3 weeks to arrive. I was quite surprised that they could last that long, to be honest. I think the seller had dipped them in some beeswax to try to stop them from drying out too much. They came with the leaves removed which I guess also helps reduce moisture loss also. The ones I got from the Czech Republic didn't take too long to arrive, less than a week from memory. They were also shipped without any leaves.

RE; my previous comment; of course, if one intends to bud graft, it does not really matter if the budwood defoliates on its journey to the UK (or does not have leaves attached in the first place). I was thinking of bringing in scions for rooting as cuttings, as I do not have any rootstocks for grafting at the moment.
Yeah, I think most sellers that sell scions intended for grafting will remove the leaves before shipping as they aren't necessary if you're going to be grafting them anyway. But I'd imagine most sellers would accommodate a request to send scions with the leaves still on. Of course, there is an increased risk of the scions deteriorating during shipping as the leaves will continue to transpire water and could dry out the scion faster. So I wouldn't bother with any seller that isn't either going to send the scion with an express shipping option or isn't based in the UK. But if you require a place to get some rootstocks for grafting I would recommend Victoriana Nursery's Poncirus trifoliata plants, they list them as "Japanese Bitter Orange Plant".

The only company that has them at times here is the Citrus Centre but don't go by their website as they don't normally list them when they are back in stock as they generally only have one or two specimens in stock at any one time. Make sure you are sitting down when you ask the price 😂😂
Hey Stephen, yeah like Brett mentioned the citrus centre is the only UK nursery that I'm aware of that sells Meiwa Kumquat trees occasionally. Of course, it was Brett that I got my scions from 😄. When I contacted the citrus centre about the Meiwa, they talked me out of buying one because they were saying you need to keep it in a greenhouse all year (even in summer), but the greenhouse would have to be shaded to stop it from overheating. The price would also be very steep lol 😂

Thanks for sharing Peter. I still have 6 Poncirus Trifoliata rootstock slowly growing in my garden for any unusual scions that might come my way.
