  • We have a few cold nights to come here in the UK in mid-September, which is quite unusual so early in Autumn. In this video, I discuss what I'll be doing with my plants. I also recommend everyone checks the forecast in their area and see what plants they currently have outside to see if they need to take any precautions.

    Its certainly an unusually cold spell for early September Peter, more like something I'd expect in late October to be honest. I do have some very tender tropicals outside but as they are sickly anyway I've decided not to bother about them. The subtropicals should be fine although their leaves might suffer a bit if its windy as that really brings a chill factor 😱

      Yeah, for September it is very cold 🥶. I refuse to put the heating on yet though or move all the citrus lol 😂. Good point about the cold wind causing issues with the leaves 😬

      @@PeterEntwistle I am still going out and about in a T shirt. While everyone else are wearing coats and jackets! Since I've made major changes to my diet (high omega 3, low omega 6 to maximize blood circulation) I really do not feel uncomfortable when it is cold. I only really feel the cold when temperatures are below freezing.

      @@garycard1456 Lol, I felt very cold today, I was sat inside with a hoodie on. Usually, I go around the house in a T-shirt and shorts even in winter lol 😂. It was only around 15°C in my office. Yet if it was 15°C outside I would have been fine in my T-shirt. I guess because I am sat still all day I feel the cold more than when I'm outside and moving about.

      @@PeterEntwistle True, you generate heat when moving around. But try maxing your omega 3 and taking ginkgo biloba, iron and B vitamin supplements. They really do help with circulation.

    The weather people ( Bee Bee Sea weather) are chopping and changing the predicted overnight temperatures every few hours: in my area, one minute they say it will be 2 degrees C on Friday night. Now they are saying it will be 4 degrees C. Tonight it will be 5 degrees C.
    One thing to note is that if skies are clear overnight and you live out of major urban areas, there is none of the heat island effect, and it is possible that the temperatures overnight can fall a few degrees below what is predicted.
    I hope there is no frost, but I doubt there will be. Although overnight temperatures will come very close to enable a grass frost. Anyhow, for a single night I simply can't be bothered to move or cover my large plants such as my brugmansias, which are now blooming. If need be I might venture out at night to spray my plants with warm water. This does work to prevent freezing on leaves if temperatures are suitable for a mild grass frost.
    I think I will bring in a few select smaller plants, such as my Acerolas. My Acerolas have spent the entire summer totally leafless, but very much alive, following last year's aphid attack. It has only been since I've moved them outdoors that they have only just started to bud out with new leaves. I suspect that microscopic indoor mites, which like the drier indoor air, were preventing the new leaf buds from forming, and since moving my Acerolas outdoors, the humidity, rain, overnight water condensation and drizzle have made conditions unbearable for these microscopic mites, so the Acerolas have finally been able to leaf out.

      Lol, yeah the forecast keeps changing here too. It was showing a low of 4°C on Friday morning earlier on, but now it's showing 2°C, but only briefly. But if that is accurate then a ground frost is definitely quite probable. Yeah, there's no heat island effect here lol. I've often seen the thermometer in my car display a slightly lower temperature than the weather app. But yeah for 1 night I don't think it's worth moving everything, even if I had the space to move them in. The temperature dip is right as the sun starts to rise, so it should quickly start to warm up again 🤞
      By the way, your parcel should be on its way to you containing the Sunrise lime cuttings and Ice cream bean seeds. The seeds have started to germinate, so I've wrapped them in a piece of damp kitchen paper. I've also put a couple of cuttings under my grow light as I was interested to see if they would root as easily as the Yuzu I managed to get to root.

      @@PeterEntwistle Many thanks, Peter. I hope the Sunrise lime cuttings prove to be as easy as my Faustrime, given that they are both derived from Australian microcitrus. I look forward to growing the Inga seeds (presumably edulis). Yeah, now that the summer is over I think that placing under a growlight is the best option. Although, the sun is still strong even to help on clear cloudless days.
      Best of luck with the Opuntias, by the way. If they fail, however, I can always send more in future.

    What would you do with olive trees?

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Місяць тому +1

      I don't bother protecting my olive trees. I find they can handle the negative temps in winter here just fine. The only possible exception might be if you have fruits on the tree. This year mine have been about a month behind usual so the fruits are tiny and won't have any chance of getting big enough to use anyway. But even with the lows of between 3°C and 5°C they will be absolutely fine this week.

    4⁰ from now is really tough.
    It's going to be a very difficult winter.
    I think 4⁰ is lower than my average lowest, even though I had frost once, usually my lowest is 8⁰C.
    I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to keep up with tropicals in such whether.

    • @PeterEntwistle
      @PeterEntwistle  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah, 4°C is very low even for here at this time in September. I hope winter doesn't turn out too bad, but we can easily get down to -4°C or -5°C briefly over winter and occasionally we get lower than that. Generally, the average low is about 2° or 3°C in Jan/Feb. Basically, any true tropicals will have to come inside here. Some subtropicals can do ok outside, but the more tender ones have to go in the greenhouse.

      It felt really cold today Peter, 11°C here. i've brought my musa collection closer to the house, i might bring the Papaya indoors now until next spring. The newer Musa Siam ruby already has a damaged leaf looks like cold damage last night, so I will bring that in might separate a pup out in case. The grand Nain will bring that indoors too as its not had time to adjust, as it probably came fresh from a greenhouse and straight into cold Manchester weather. The other Musas ill keep them in the porch area maybe get a fleece on them. The Ensete I don't have room for ill let them die back naturally.
