I am just wanted to state how much (a lot much) I appreciate your lack of sponsored host ad reads... I'm always impressed by the genuine, honest work you put into keeping it fair and consistent - and I routinely crack a smile upon hearing the newest video's choice of musical score, too. I am excited to see your upcoming addition to the collective knowledge (as well as to your considerable personal collection of data), by essentially establishing some oxidation testing benchmarks with modern carbon steels.
But no pressure, Pete - we both know how expectations can sap the enjoyability from once-beloved activities. If it's next year - or never - I'm good with it. I enjoy what's here, and I try not to fall into the habit of focusing instead on what's just around the corner. I'm just happy with whatever you decide to share, whenever you're inspired to create.
We love you, buddy - and congrats, by the way, on being noticed so favorably by Sal Glesser himself!
... Maybe put a word in with him about making more 15V knives - so we aren't stuck with the scalpers if we aren't lucky enough to score one during the minutes of availability before they're all snapped up?

@@jameshealy4594 yeah, bm is still the king of overpricing but spyderco is getting really close.
especially their seki made knives; some of the grivory / vg-10 models are in the ~200 range, meanwhile i can get a us-made hogue rsk1 in g10 and 20cv for $170.
benchmade and spyderco are the apple and samsung of the knife world, you simply pay 30% more for the name.
the only reasons why i prefer spydie over bm are 1: spyderco does a lot of crazy & cool steels and 2: their knives come without bad grinds and funky fit'n'finish (at least those from the us and taichung plants).
speaking of overpriced: the s35vn models from cold steel are ridiculous too since the company was bought by gsm.

@@UA-cam-Censorship-Police -- Yes, it's really the range of steels, their close ties to the community that I like them for. I agree that they're massively overpriced now -- especially outside the USA. If you think they're expensive, try buying one on the UK or Australia. I keep wanting to pick up a Delica in K390, but here in the UK they sell for about $200 -- for a plastic handled knife? GTFO!

Haha! All good Pete! I made those kinda goofy scales myself (so as not to kill your hand)!
It turned out my first batch of mules I sent you had a bad wire edge (lack of sharpening knowledge at that time) and no hand-destruction happened.
I should have put those scales on the MagnaCut Mule of recent, probably would have hurt your hand less than that janky paracord wrap. I just had no idea it was gonna cut 1500 times.

Love the green background, it works really goes really with you white tshirt Pete, 👌🏻👍🏻!
Great test and a very relaxing video review to watch.
I recently purchased a Magnacut bladed knife. On the factory edge it developed one micro chip after whittling Oak for approximately 25 minutes, no rolls, just the tiniest chip, virtually invisible.
M390 on the other hand chipped out a little worse, a larger chip, no rolls, and this was after approximately whittling the same Oak chair leg! lol!
Well I felt that I might not removing the right angles from the chair leg might be in contravention of the Geneva convention even though I agree with your " Tactical " advice about getting a few good hits in the old angles!
Great vid, well done, and keep that unevenly over developed right arm of yours in optimum condition with regular maintenance mate!

So. The hardness of the carbides isn't going to be what would cause toughness issues at the edge. The volume of the carbides (the ammount a given steel has), and the size of the carbides (like d2, vs cpm d2), are going to be the real factors that play into the toughness.
Which is why the non stainless (or semistainless, as i like to call them) tool steels are the overall best performers with a toughness/wear resistance balance.
And its the reason magnacut is such a big deal, it was able to get an only mc type carbide microstructure, while also being a stainless steel. Therefore having a lower carbide volume, and raising the toughness. But still having good wear resistance because the carbides are harder.

I've been impressed with m398. Got a custom in it at 64hrc and ground to 0.007 and it's performed better than any stainless steel I've tried yet in holding an edge without needing a touch up. It even beat out Elmax at 64-65 by Cultrotech though some of that might be to blade shape. I still haven't used s125v yet (sold the only knife I had in it before much use but it was the hardest knife ever to sharpen) or s90v (my favorite high carbide stainless) with a custom heat treatment to see where it ranks. Going of tests it's about the same as s125v at the same hardness but slightly different feeling.
Will be interested to see how it does with Gabe. M398 and magnacut are both pretty new to me but I've been enjoying both and they're really moving up my favorite steels lists.

Wait until you try Spyderco Golden USA 61-62rc m390/20cv or Reate 61rc secondary hardening m390. They should be in the 800-1000 range give or take.
Everyone is doing m398 a bit soft, not sure what the mules are at.
In anycase, Reate uses liquid nitrogen and 3 tempers in the 500c range. This basically takes the chromium and instead of using it all for stainlessness, converts them into larger and harder carbides. This allows them to be in the 60-61 range and still get high performance at a lower rc.
Where as Spyderco is most likely using a different austenitizing temp and most likely a shorter soak time, plate quench, then Ln2 and low heat temper(s). Aim for a higher rc than the other brands, as they are aiming for 62 average.
So Spyderco will range from 60-62. 60 being better than other brands 60rc but not really that good for m390. 61-62 are really where the golden protocol shines in testing. The other factories Spyderco uses, Taiwan, Japan, Italy etc are not using the same protocol as Golden USA factory. So performance is lower in comparison, even if they are at the same rc. For example Japanese m390 is often around 62-63rc and its performance is lower than that of the golden m390. Perhaps this is due to grain growth from longer soak times? Hard to say because Spyderco doesnt usually disclose their protocols.

Yeah. With proper heat treat it should perform close to s125v at the same hardness. Seen test of Cultrotech m398 at 65hrc and custom heat treatment by Denis Florov and it performed incredible. Then again all their steels do way better than production and you pay for the results. But their m390 does 2 to 4 times better than anyone else. I've been really impressed with their Elmax.

@@D00MTR33 Cultrotech do an amazing job, Denis does the custom heat treatments for them in Rus and does an amazing job. And I remembered seeing the cut tests your referencing! Their n690 does as good as most of the mass production m390 on the market (most m390 on the market sucks btw).
But yeah a custom heat treat will do way better than mass production. But Spyderco and reate show that it can be done good if companies care. Its sad most companies want to charge more but not heat treat them correctly.
Peters best m390 is a 60rc mule from Taiwan and a 61rc bestech m390. Both perform pretty low for what m390 is capable of. Funny how the bestech at their best can't even out perform Spyderco at 60rc. And they charge like 300-400 for most of their m390 and 20cv. People are getting ripped off.

@@tacticalcenter8658 yeah, a quality heat treatment makes more difference than the steel choice. In the test I'm talking about (done by ruskan kiyasov, a Russian knife chanel) the best m390/20cv results were zt456 (because of small blade length) and CKF with Protect Malibu doing pretty well as well. But they all got beat by Cultrotech s45vn, n690 and even Damasteel.
The best stainless steels edge retention wise I've experienced so far are m398 at 64hrc from Assassin's Knives custom (he buys his steel from professional Russian heat treaters), Elmax from Cultrotech and magnacut on a DCC Pryguy at 64-65hrc. But that's kinda of a given for being custom. I haven't tried Reate m390 but I've always liked my para 2s in m390 and in Elmax with a Krein regrind to 0.005. They perform great and being so thin they cut like lasers and are easy to touch up or resharpen.
Spyderco has been stepping up lately and doing even better heat treat protocols by working with Triple B on magnacut and 15v. I hope he helps them improve a few other steels.
