this guy is what pc channels should be, no publicity, no bullshit, straight to the point and an exact tutorial
Unbelievable, 25 years in IT industry and that never crossed my mind. You learn some new every day, Thanks Carey.
That sad
All those years of academy training wasted!

More sad the motherboard designers changed the design to relying on the a battery. Old motherboards don't have this problem, will boot even without the battery.
Haha I was thinking the exact same thing! This must have been fixed tho I assume on newer mobo's? @CareyHolzman
25 Years? i know right man, Memory's a Bitch
My PC died a couple of days ago, but had power to USB outlets, but no power on pressing the power button. I searched on Google and this video came up on you tube.. it has only gone and worked a peach!!! Many thanks Carey, you have saved me a trip to PC fixer and lots of down time.. keep safe and sincere thanks once again...
Was about to strip out my tower a couple years back when I discovered it was an issue with the battery. Thank you Carey, you are the first person on you tube I have run across that has brought this to our attention.
You are an angel! I was really on the verge of crying because my pc wouldn't turn on, I took it out and reassembled it piece by piece and nothing, never in a million years I would've thought of replacing the battery. You really made my day
Carey has really stepped up his editing and video quality. Good job!
Very interesting. When I have had issues with an old computer no longer turning on and the fans don't spin, it has been the power supply. I assumed the system would boot if the power was plugged because that would supply the necessary power. The system would then lose the date and time each time the system was shut down. Always learning something new from you...thanks for the video.
Great video, love the close-up shots of taking battery out and installing new one. Especially nice giving the battery name, detailed oriented as always # banCarey
Carey, I just spent two days tearing down my PC and re-assembling it trying to fix this very same problem! Swapped CPUs, PSUs, RAM, naked boot, to no avail. Was just about to buy a new MB as that was the only thing I didn't have extra but decided to do one last look and I came across your video. Bloody hell!!! Of all the things to cause a dead PC! Bloody CMOS battery! Thanks a million for sharing this info. Needless to say, this fix or troubleshoot is not mentioned anywhere in the MB manual.....
Holy crap man, straight forward and simple, and no confusion. I appreciate the help
This is why I tell people to look you up -- Thanks Again
My desktop PC failed to power-up after a violent electrical storm...assumed to my horror it was fried. After watching your short video...went to Batteries +, bought and replaced the CR2032 battery ($6) on the motherboard...and wallah..PC booted-up just fine. Thank you a bunch for saving me $, time, and frustration.
Carey,
Gotta let you know I saved myself lots of uncertainty. My oldest win 7 pc usually on 24/7 which I'd just shut down for a dusting totally refused to do ANYTHING. I already replaced the PSU with a Seasonic 620W 80 Bronze bout 5 yrs ago when I was plagued with unending boot/reboot and inexplicable failures & file corruption. So while I did keep telling myself that it could'nt be the same problem, I just couldnt help thinking ... THAT dang PSU AGAIN!!! Then, I recalled seeing something on your channel some years ago bout a ridiculously quick & simple fix.
AND indeed, it was exactly the m/b button battery .... been in use for ages and forgotten.... until now.
Thanks much.
Ian.
You learn something every day, I almost threw away a whole system, before changing the BIOS battery! I have been building PCs for over 25 year, but never new that a dead BIOS battery will prevent the whole system from starting, thank you sir!
Gosh... I thought the problem with my computer was something very serious like CPU or PSU issue. I started to watch your video with very little hope, but still I replaced the battery as you demonstrated. That did the trick! Thank you very much, with all respect!
Another excellent video by Mr. Holzman. My Carey Holzman inspired computer was built back in Dec 2013. My mobo is the Intel DH87MC. I got one of the last remaining Intel boards before they quit the motherboard business. The BIOS on mine is set at default with the only setting change is to recognize a faster RAM speed. So, when it's time to change a battery, hopefully, it will be quick and painless.
I can't believe a 69 year old women just fixed her old computer thanks to you! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Hi..... great shows you produce, I'm loving every show, I could watch them for hours...and why not I'm retired now.......
Interesting, thanks for the video, I have never seen this before that the CMOS battery being dead would cause the system not to turn on...
Exactly. In my experience, a dead battery just means that I have to manually input the date and time, at which point the machine then boots as usual. This is new to me.
Very informative I have viewed your previous tutorials and bought a USB IDA + Sata however as you have said be systematic in fault finding and I've definitely learned this from watching your tutorials brilliant for someone like me Thanks Carey
Clear, concise, and strait to the heart of the matter. Just the way I like it. Thanks.
great vid Carey as usual, I had this exact problem the other day
You just saved my life man, $5000 racing simulator PC and my 50 cent battery was dead. Thank God!!! I love you bro!!!! It was working perfect last night.
Hey just wanted to say I could've spent a lot of money on a repair for my computer. Instead I spent next to nothing on a battery and this fixed my issue. Thanks a bunch for making the vid :)
My PC has been switching off and yesterday it wouldn't start at all. I've cleaned it, changed the CPU fan for a spare which did nothing, (I was thinking it was overheating)then priced a new power supply, CPU and mother board. And it turned to be that battery!! It never even crossed my mind. I'm so glad I seen this video before I spent a fortune 👌🏻👍🏻😀
Wish i knew this 10 years ago!!! Thanks again Carey.
Awesome - I didn't even think of this until I saw your video. You hit the nail on the head!
Sir I Know it's pretty late but I just want to say thank you so much!! I was thinking I will bring my system to the repairs but after I watch this, I didn't hesitate to buy this battery. Guess what, it actually works!!! THANK You so much ! you deserve likes and I will sub to you too
Thanks so much. Was up most of last night after computer stopped running after a power outage. Gave it one last try this morning and was going to take it to a computer repair facility, but then I found your video. Changed the CMOS battery and it started right up. THANKS!!!!!!
Dang! Wished I had thought of changeing out that battery back in 2009, my dad owned the same computer and ended up getting a new one after it died.
Thanks very much Carey Holzman. Really appreciate this & other videos, really instructive.
So... my pc wasn't turning on and so I went to the makers of the motherboard to see if they knew how to fix this, and they said to clean the cpu and memory connection points. I did this and nothing happened, and so I thought lets start from the beginning and I searched up "computer isn't turning on". The first video came up (this one) and so I clicked on it, and it worked. I was sooooo happy, because I had given up since it had been broken for like a month and a half. Thank you soo much this was so easy and so underrated.
Thanks for the tip, I wondered what the battery on my motherboard was for, now I know.
Finally found a decent pc fixing channel. Subscribed.
I never knew this. I thought that the battery just provided power to store BIOS information and time when the system was unplugged. Never saw this before. All I ever saw from a bad bios battery was date, bios settings and time resetting or a message that says something like battery voltage low. Thanks for the great tip.
This helped me out so much. Now I'm back streaming, and NOT having to go to an over-priced PC Repair store. Subscribed!
A real life saver... Thanks a TON Carey, You are Breathing 😊
Thanks for the video, it was really helpful for me. 🙏🏻
You saved my life! I almost bought a new PSU. You're a legend
I was frustrated from the morning as my pc was not powering up. At first I thought that my spike buster was at fault, so I went to the electrical store and bought a socket to see if it powers on through the board directly but to no avail. I was thinking of giving up and then I searched for "how to fix a computer which is not powering on?" and google showed the result, thankfully I watched your video. My PC has powered on, all thanx to you.
So, Thank you you so much! 🍫
Awesome fix, short & straight to the point
Hi Carey, watched your video and changed the battery. My computer is working again. Many thanks!
Thanks Carey googled my problem and you showed and fixed it. Never knew there was a battery
Can I tell you HOW AMAZING YOU are?,!!! It worked for me!!!!!
Your videos are always so helpful. Glad I subscribed.
this guy carey, produces the best pc related content on youtube, if only those with the sponsored videos and free products actualy knew anything about pcs - other then building them, welcome to his channel
True. I just recently started watching his videos.
Thanks :)
Quickly swapped to back-up PC, so will check out your advice today!
Reading the comments It's interesting to see what everyone's first thought would be, probably based off user experience on what they see the most, A PSU, the power switch,, I myself have often seen a system not power because someone had broken off part of a usb port so one of the pin's was grounding out the board.
I thought the issue was a loose power switch connector myself.
you are my great inspiration to work with computers thanks for that
Thank you, Carey!
Wow thank you , you solved the problem for me -- biggggg thumbs up 👍😍
I just got a new gaming PC and my 9 year old son began to desperately want a computer! Any computer! So I went in the garage and found our old PC. Guess what? This saved me a headache and after swapping out the battery on the motherboard, it worked!!!
Thank you!
Holy crap! So easy, so simple. Damn, thanks Carey.
Worked great, thanks dude! You're a gentleman and a scholar!
Great one, thanks Carey!
Awesome Video Carey Good tip
I just changed my battery! That was very helpful! Thank you!
I love your videos, your the first person who I have come across that says changing the CMOS battery could be a possible problem with a computer not starting.... I have a computer exhibiting the same issues, I will be pulling out my Multimeter and checking the volts on it. I will let you know what happens thanks again even if this does not fix my computer its one less possible thing that could be wrong.
I wish every tutorial on the net was this good, straight and helpful...
I've been repairing computers for 28 years and I've never run into this, and probably never will, but interesting video. Just a lesson to never rule anything out, and I now have another thing to eliminate in the process of elimination with a "no-power-on" situation, after the power supply has been eliminated.
Thanks for the info. Very useful.
My PC is literally about to be 7 years old. Nothing new changed, and its been that way for 7 years.
This helped alot.
Thank God I found you, I was lost without you.....
OMG I wish I saw this video before I figured out myself! Spent nearly 2 hrs troubleshooting!
Worked for me today, thank you so much!
Very nice video sir thankful to you for this information
You don't know how long I been Searching for answer😭 thank you so muchhh
Another great video!
Yep! Add me to the list of people with 25+ years in IT and I never ran into the "PC won't boot due to the 'CMOS' battery" trick.
Thanks!
I once had the same problem with a friends' PC, she didn't have a spare battery so I used the one from my wrist watch! Yup, it worked, and she bought a pack of two batteries the next day and gave me back my battery plus a new one as a spare! I am not a PC expert, but spent 35 yrs as an auto-truck mechanic, and I always follow the golden rule: Start at the beginning, that means with the battery, when diagnosing electrical problems.
wow I didn't know that about Compaq/HP computer's. Good option to try if I run into a PC That Won't turn on!
a while back I had the battery die in my main PC. only 2.5 years old at the time, which I found weird.
Thanks champ. you saved me during the Covid-19 quarantine
Great visuals and explanation. Thanks!
Thanks Carey! Very accurate step- changed the 2032 battery on HP desktop, it starts up again. We had power outages, 3 year old desktop wouldn't start!
Memories of my second PC... The SR 1210NX What a piece of crap it was lol.. Helped me get comfortable working with hardware and was a step into eventually building my first PC in 2009.
It is now 4 years later and very strange to see Carey without his turntable for the PC.
Thank you for this! So simple even I can do it (I think).
Thank you for this video! I have a server that is under 2 years old. The other day I shut it down to install a new hard drive and now it it wont turn on. Same as in the video. I checked all cables and changed the power supply and still nothing. I'm going to try the battery trick tonight. I sure hope this is it because otherwise I am taking the whole thing apart this weekend to test.
Nice video. I really found it very helpful.
GREAT video!!!! simple easy fix.hundred thumbs up!
wow I never knew a dead battery could cause that, my first thought would have been the power supply. I guess that's why I'm not a tech XD
Nice job. Always try the Basic's and easiest possible fixes first.
these videos always helpful
Is that an old school compaq with the Intel Alhena board made by ECS? I have the guts for one of those sitting on my floor. I did a retro build in it for the kids minecraft and homework pc.
Oh Thank you so much! your amazing ❤❤❤
Managed to pick up a Z77 Mini ITX board on eBay for £23 which was listed as faulty. New CR2032 and it was working just fine. :)
I've had to change those batteries out on a few friends computers ive worked on as well for similar reasons. Its not always the most obvious thing when it comes to power issues but usually on older computers this is the case.
dude, thank you so much. you saved my ass just now. i came home and turned on my pc and it wasn't working and i needed it to work. good thing i had a spare unit lying around so i just took that and pulled out the battery from that and viola! thank you so much!
Thank you so much! It was so easy and simple. I didn't have to spend too much money thinking I had to replace the power supply!
I experienced this situation with a two year old Dell XPS 8700 computer. My computer has a switch in the back of the unit which you push and hold to test the power supply unit. If the light came on green, the PSU was good. If the light didn’t come on, the PSU was bad. My power supply was good, so today after blowing out the dust from inside the computer with a garden blower (in my backyard), I replaced the CR2032 battery. Thanks to your unselfish contributions, you just saved me $1000.00.
Once again, thank you so much sir! When it comes to computers, you ARE the man!
Your amazing I've been troubleshooting for my pc since it wouldnt turn on and I only thought it was my power supply but after buying a new one and it not working I looked and found your video which saved my pc although my motherboard is only like 6 months old so I dont know how this battery was ruined
Seeing the Presario brings back memory of supporting Compaq computers.
Perfect video, solved my problem. Thanks very much!
You legend, thank you. Thought it was my 10 year old power supply but changing the CMOS battery did the trick
You just saved my life ... i cant thank u enoughhj
My PC doesn't want to turn on too, So I'll try this right when I get home, Thanks for the tip never knew whats the battery on Motherboard for
I've been working on PC's since I was old enough to hold a screwdriver and I would've NEVER thought the BIOS battery could cause a motherboard not to start. Insane that a company with the reputation like Compaq (we all know it's absolutely wonderful - lol) would use a board with that "feature." Also, how many people watching this video remember pci dial-up modems?
Thanks for sharing Carey.
Never knew you were the one who's going to save my ass, i took my one off and put it back ans everything work!! Ty
Thanks for the information and what a great tutorial
