  • Are Fighting Games Decaying into Drama, Twitch Highlights, And Hype Reaction Videos? A discussion with ‪@RedLineFGC‬ . I have been actively involved with the fighting game scene (attending locals, watching majors, etc) since 2012 and over the past ten years it feels like there has definitely been a big shift in tone where the passion for the games have cooled, despite there being more fighting games being produced than ever, and the passion for the internet sub culture, especially drama, has grown. I'm not an arcade purist or anything like that, but I do think there is a balancing point in terms of the type of content being made and the tone of the content. I would argue that since the esports shift, the tone of the content has become more generic, bland, and more geared towards filler and there also now exists a thriving subculture of pure drama. Also the rate of turnover between games has become so fast that it's essentially impossible to keep up with as a fan, as a player, and as a video maker / youtuber. On top of this, it is a bit of a shame the so many channels that I have enjoyed over the years like Avoiding the Puddle and The Main Man SWE are more on the side of stream highlights than making dedicated videos and podcasts (especially ATP), but I also do understand why this shift has occured. This all being said, keep in mind that I am much less invested in what goes on with fighting games and am perfectly willing to now retire to playing locals and less popular fighting games online :-) I am interested to see what happens with Tekken 8, Street Fighter 6, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear, Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter, and many other upcoming fighting games, but I'm not holding my breath for a healthy shift in quality and engagement around the games. You never know though!

I'm a bit torn apart when it comes to current state of fighting games. Sure it's cool that this genre try to stay relevant but on the other hand this huge turnover when it comes to the games which are considered "hot new thing" is real deal breaker. Just like you I bought into Melty Blood hype and was really shocked how fast this game stopped being relevant. This is real issue (especially for new people into the genre) because nowadays learning how to play fighting game takes a lot more time than in the past due the fact that genre is way more complicated when it comes to the gameplay. Not to mention that this gives me some flashbacks of the late 90s when there was evident oversaturation of the fighting game market which lead (together with other factors) to post 00s fighting games dark ages. Sure nowadays we have online play, focus on eSports and market looks totally different so I doubt that we will return to the state from the early 00s but you can still feel this uncanny feeling that something is not right.
Also this focus on the hype generally mirrors overall overproduction of popculture that we have nowadays. People mainly look at what's relevant at this moment and expect to be hyped all the time, that want high rotation of news, drama etc. This is super devastating for people who want not only play these games but also produce content so I'm glad that you mentioned this in your talk. Entry barrier for someone who comes from the outside is super high and simply may be seen as not worth the hassle. End result of this is homogenization of content and fanbase opinions. This is of course something not exclusive to the fighters but to the games in general and IMO is one of the reasons why modern day mainstream game journalism is in dire state. Sorry for such long rant, anyways great video as always.

Don't agree at all that it takes longer to learn fighting games now. There's so many resources available you can level up way faster. But everyone else also has those tools to learn.

@@steeplewiththesnakes Yes I agree that tools, tutorials and overall ability to easy exchange information with other people over the web helps a lot. Still there is execution barrier that was part of fighting games from always. I think that modern games which have a lot more gameplay mechanics than in the 90s and the sole fact that it's more easy to get better for a lot more people than in the 90s makes modern fighting games harder to learn. This is a bit of paradox and I would personally say that modern games have a lot bigger potential to be easier than in the past because entry level in less higher due available tools, resources and because of in game accessability options, but still execution barrier is still there so in the end there is a lot work to do while learning how to play these games.

@@lofilife9523 I think you're confusing the idea of you and your local arcade not understanding all the mechanics with there not being mechanics. Most modern fighting games are a lot simpler than old arcade releases, and many of the new mechanics are really just accessibility features. There are also games now that do limit the execution barrier (including the upcoming League of Legends fighter), it just so happens a lot of people like that execution.

I think we shouldn't forget about people who love fighting games but are not interested in competitive or online play. Like myself, for instance. I have a big fighting games collection and occasionally play a lot of them. And I think there are not so few people like myself and its a pretty significant part of the fighting games comunity. In many fighting games that I play on PlayStation only 10-20% of players have the achievment - "played an online match".

Just stop talking about fighting games. I know this sounds counter-productive and indeed it presents a weird paradox for us gamers but the problem with most communities is they talk about the game more than playing it. Imagine if every single FGC player and influencer just ripped the ethernet cord out for a week and labbed or played solo matches, the entire community would literally change in that span of time and inarguably for the better. But because social media necessitates constant engagement and click, this inflammatory, reactionary and ultimately pointless discourse continues to propagate to the point it usurps the mechanics and becomes the focal point of that game's legacy. You think Melty Blood had it rough? How about Fighting EX Layer, Bloody Roar, Killer Instinct? Self-fulfilling prophecy, no one wants to genuinely support the game they just want to yap about it and ask the community WHY IS THIS DEAD, then when it truly does die they hop trends and the cycle continues. Oops, there goes Strive. Oops, there goes DNF Duel. What's that about KOF XV? Huh, never heard of it. No, let's just keep talking about Street Fighter 6 for the next five months, complaining about player counts and rollback netcode and tier lists, and then once that well dries up go to the next one. Literal tunnel vision. The entire legacy of Granblue Fantasy Versus is Rule 34 art. The entire legacy of Kill La Kill IF is "but THIS anime arena fighter is based, bro." The entire legacy of Dead Or Alive is clickbait articles about MTX like that has anything to do with the core gameplay. It's all so tiresome.

Honestly the extreme churn and burn with fighting games is what pushed me away from the genre and into shmups. In shmups I can play whatever I want, it doesn't need to be "the new hotness" it can be played simply because its a quality game. In the FGC whether a game is good or not doesn't matter. If it did, TLB2 would have a killer online community.
It's really frustrating because I heard so much talk about how many Darkstalkers fans there are, but CFC came out and nobody showed up! I can find dozens of matches instantly in KoF 02UM but CFC is beyond dead. I can't find a match in any of the included games any time I've tried, and it's the best Capcom fighting release in decades. It's beyond frustrating.
I still play casually with friends, but I haven't touched a fighting game properly in ages. Maybe I'll give SF6 a go when it comes out, but I'm pretty disappointed with how transient the community for most games is.

Hi Alex, exactly my feelings as well. I really enjoy playing a number of older fighting games but the only one that is remotely viable to continue playing on a competitive level is 3rd strike, and even 3rd strikes competition is mostly just a few niche events.

Yes. Whenever I look at fighting game content now they’re always talking about the topics in the thumbnail or the character design/lore. Which is cool and all but none of those things are a fighting game exclusive thing, the gameplay is. Nobody seems to care and I’ve seen some UA-cam polls ask what the most important part of a fighting game is and people say the characters instead of gameplay. Which is important because we don’t want the game to look like crap but most important? No

Most people "into video games" don't really like video games. That's what I believe, and I'm sure that it's a hot take. The same applies to every hobby these days. They are just addicted to consooming new coontent, regardless of the quality. They don't actually care about any of it, to them it's all disposable, and their very existence has dumbed down pretty much every hobby in existence. Because they are lazy and just want things with no real depth, that they can passively absorb and pretend to be into because they were told that it's the thing they should like at the moment, and then when it's no longer trendy they just forget about it. They have turned every hobby into the garbage that is TV.
It's very strange, but these days, I actually hate most of the people that are into all of my hobbies. I only regularly talk about them with one person, that isn't even into the things that I'm into, for the most part. Hell, most of the gaming videos that I (re)watch are old, with the exception of the few people that I actually respect, that are mostly into arcade games, like people here. Why is that an exception? Because you can't be the kind of person that I'm describing AND also be into those games. If you're not passionate about games, you're never getting even close to beating them. And it's not a trendy thing that people get into because the TV said that now they are allowed to.

@@TheElectricUnderground That specifically I think is connected to the trend of people only watching others play games instead of playing the games themselves. It kinda began with let's plays (though I watched a lot of those and still ended up playing all the games anyway, and the more insane ones really inspired me to try hard stuff and to get better at games), but I think it definitely got a lot worse with streaming becoming a big thing. I never got into streaming myself, I'm the kind of guy that almost never catches them live and that just watches clips that look particularly interesting, but streams are so time-consuming that my guess is that a lot of people that are really addicted to them have little time left to actually play the games. Seems very unhealthy to me, only experiencing things vicariously by watching other people do it.
And streams in general are a lot more disposable than even let's plays were. There are so damn many of them and most of the time nothing interesting is going on, to the point that you're really better off putting it on another monitor and playing a game and only looking at it a little bit. Like, they are simply not made for people to go back to the old ones, they are made to be watched live and maybe shortly afterwards, and then to be thrown away and forgotten. Maybe that has affected people's attitudes towards the actual games themselves. They see a streamer play a game and then play it for a few hours, and when the streamer does something else they just move on to that and forget about the game. Just a guess, I am a hermit, I am isolated myself from the masses so much that I frequently don't know the details of what they do. Someone more in touch with the current culture could make a less speculative analysis of this. Though not too in touch to be able to think clearly.

GuileWinQuote is a non-Brit that I'll recommend though. JMCrofts is good for covering a range of games and blending them with stream highlights - he holds regular tournaments in unknown games as well.

Preface: did not watch the whole video... but Here's an interesting question: since you didn't discuss any specific strats in this video, or specifically talk through any fighting games - could this video be considered another reaction in the chain of reactions?! 🤣
That funny thought aside, Blasted Salami and MainMan were two people I really liked watching while learning Tekken but overall I think fighting games continually changing and being patched (something that I know you don't love) - has helped create this kind of content, and in the case of MainManSwe and Arslan, the "reactions" was simply the new way of publically conversing on UA-cam haha and continuing a conversation. Everyone's "reacting" instead of writing a comment for a few reasons: videos are impactful and harder to argue with, comments don't have time and seem lost to time afterwards, and there's always that chance that people might enjoy your style and words and you make it big ... And I DONT think this is inherently a FGC thing personally. I just think because the FGC is big, this is easier to see.

Post all the wife beating concerns. So this vid is officially cleared as not misinformation :-) also on the topic of this vid sort of being another factor in the problem, I honestly don t think so. The problem we discuss is not that people make vids on topics but that the vids being made are filler highlights or drama for the sake of drama. My complaints do come from a genuine place so I do think there is a substantive difference. In online communication there is a rhetorical trap you don't want to fall into where everything is the same so you can start classifying different messages as equivalent. This is how stuff like valid critique can start getting lumped into "drama." When there is a difference in tone and message.

I had fun in my Tekken 7 days a few years ago but I wouldnt classify the FGC as anything but toxic the entire time that I've been a part of anything related to the FGC. the only thing non-toxic has been specific locals or friends groups. so I dont see a whole lot of change, it feels the same to me as it was back then, so the video probably just isnt for me, since I'm not engaging with the content being critqued.

I got into fighting games as recently as 2019 and it was because of remnants of the old school arcade culture that made its way onto my feeds and appealed to me. Yipes, Santhrax, Justin… but now that I’m in it I don’t relate with the vast majority of “FGC people.” The vibe doesn’t feel as organic, grimy or underground as I hoped. Too much politics, cutesy esthetics, poor communication skills (I’m thinking mainly of fans here and not developers), immaturity

I think the cycle of consume product fast, throw it away as fast, has to do with the fact that most purchases are from people who don't care to play fighting games against other people. They like watching content, but that's about it. They don't want to see 20 years worth of incremental changes to a game's competitive state after 15 or 20 years of playing the same version by the same people.
They view it as a form of entertainment to purely watch fighting games. This means balance changes for the sake of meta shift, regardless of the actual need for it. New characters that bloat the roster. The ones that have the most control over what happens to fighting games are the overwhelming majority who fund their existence, and it just happens that those people don't actually play the games at all. It's not gatekeeping, or hating on anybody. It's how it is and will probably continue to be. The shift of content creators to be more "inclusive" and less edgy about being OG wasn't some change of heart because they've become wiser with age. There's more money in it. More than the fake grudge/money matches Marvel 3/SF 4 had.
Volume means value now. You pump out a modern MUGEN and get claps for the large roster and variety. You also conveniently can't practice against that character in training mode before buying.
The reason the odd "retro" tournament now and again gathers attention, and old heads start huffing that hopium their favorite game really was that great all along, and they are showing it to people, is owed solely to the fact that those events are rare. You will get people to watch a Third Strike event once in a year. No way are they going to open a stream, or even video of a weekly, or even monthly of it. People love saying how much they love CVS2 and how amazing it was. They woul die of boredom if recent events didn't try to force roster handicaps. They love the idea of liking it, not the actual thing.

@@TheElectricUnderground Studying the FGC's growth struggles is a science of its own. The change of FG's being viewed and (self)marketed as these exclusive, very tight knit, small local community games, as opposed to big bad eSports. Complaining people don't play because the genre is "too real" for the normies. Arguing what an 09'er really means and that it's a mindset, and not just about when you started. To then a complete 180 to even if you buy KoF 15, spend a few hours only in training mode (like Aris did), you too are "part of the community." The guy who randomly thought about Mai Shiranui and looked up some rule 34 of her, he's part of the community. Everyone gets in. Anything as long as you can't call my game dead. We can't be the unpopular ones anymore.
I think Majin Obama's covered the whole topic in disconnected rants, but I look forward to a full structured exposition on all of it at once. He has a 20 minute rant just on why Strive sold well.

If you want a good range of casual modes, here's hoping SF6 saves us but you could probably play an older game whether that's SoulCalibur, any Smash or Rival Schools.

I don't entirely agree with the takes here on fighting game content, and to the extent that it's true it's more due to the UA-cam algorithm than the FGC itself. A lot of the informational content has moved to discords, and tutorial videos are always going to perform less for more effort since they won't attract clicks from viewers and casual players. Not to mention the fgc is sort of in limbo waiting for the next gen of games, which I think accelerates your perception of there being a new game every week.
The initial release of SFV also of course harmed that game, and that has hurt some of the content youre talking about. It's not necessarily that the playerbase is less engaged, it's that the casual audience has no interest since they were burned by the vanilla version. This video as well falls victim to that (eg rootkit, Lupe match) -- how can a meme channel take off if that's the view of the people outside the SFV community?
Stream highlights isn't a new style of fgc content, it's the content meta in general. Ludwig has a video outlining this as his strategy to blow up. As an audience this isn't ideal, but it's what happens when people are focused on making this their career rather than just some hobby.

    • @steeplewiththesnakes
      @steeplewiththesnakes 2 роки тому

Core A gaming as well has had to turn to making videos as contract work or something through his company to get the bills paid. I don't think this reflects the FGC, it reflects the economy of content creation.
Anyway this is just my perspective as someone who's been into fighting games and only very recently started with shmups while fgc things are slowing down building up to SF6 etc.

Not trying to be snarky, but sincerely I think you should be the change you want to see to some extent. I know some of the curmudgeonly hard-asses on system11 feel like *your* channel borders on "trailer reaction" at times
I still really enjoy watching your videos because you actually talk about gameplay fundamentals, but I think it might be worth delaying your reactions to new games a bit (like TMNT, Sol Cresta, etc...), or release follow-up content that has more comprehensive frame data breakdowns, input from other top players of the game or genre (like STG Weekly), etc...
I always have to go to Discord or wikis now for precise technical info on games, and it feels like a regression to the GameFAQ days compared to the golden age of street fighter 4 video tutorials :')

    • @TheElectricUnderground

This is because critique is not valued or respected anymore. You ll notice in places like system 11 they will speak out of both sides of their mouth. Whereas my channel strives to further dig into topics and foster discussion rather than being dismissive. System 11 has failed the genre in every aspect and the times it is the most active are during drama threads and flame threads ha. To classify my content as trailer reactions is such a huge categorical error that I think it s self evident that they lack any intellectual credibility. So you would like me to change my channel to what style exactly, nintendo life? It s funny people complain and complain about there not being alternatives to cooperate press, but then when one comes around many will find that they really did like the warm fuzzy all along

Fighting games Along fighting sports are increasingly giving importance to Trash talk, social media trends , etc to hype the Crowd.people love soap opera and wrestling promos. It is all a cycle, in the end everybody profits. There is no thing as bad publicity. The important Is that people get attention. Look to MG Gregor and mayweather .
