Great point, guys! Totally agree 💯 I haven't really noticed that much myself because I bought a lot of Sandtroopers back when they first came out. I haven't been convinced to get any more troops because I already had plenty. I do have the Target Exclusive Garbage Shoot Luke Stormtrooper because he's extra shiny and I wanted the "wet hair" Luke. Luke's my favorite character, so I pick up almost every Luke, but that's the first thing I thought about Luke when I got it, that it looks like poop!! Same with Rex. Lol
Couldn’t agree more guys. The old methods of weathering just looked better. I especially think army building is hurt when every figure has the exact same wear pattern. There’s not the natural variations that hand weathering gives. Thanks and keep up the good work.
I also agree with the hate for the weathering on the aforementioned figures… that’s why I’m honestly happy when Hasbro doesn’t weather figures anymore because they just don’t look great. I miss the earlier weathering in the line where it actually looked realistic
the remnant stormtrooper is one of my favorites. simply adding a dark wash over the crevices of the figure will make it look absolutely incredible. I really think hasbro did an amazing job with it, but I feel the opposite with most releases and prefer no weathering at all because I do a better job at weathering my own figures.

All that is to say, let Hasbro make factory pristine Stormtroopers and leave the weathering part to me. Or, as you said, give it the personal touch and not digital. Good video, as always!
Yep I actually prefer clean than the photo-real weathering for the most part. Especially for things like Clone Troopers. Just release them clean! -Justin
I totally hear what you're saying. I didn't realise the 'weathering' on Migs was 3D printed. I painted out the stripe on his arm and then did the rest of the armour so the colour matched. So glad they didn't put any on the 'Appo' trooper, I bought 3 and want them all to look different. I'm doing all the weathering on them myself and painting the entire armour wouldn't have been much fun!
Doesn't bother me too awful much. My eyesight is slowly deteriorating as I get older so the perfectly pixelated patterns simulating weathering and dirt, usually only on the front of the figure and not the back, bothers me less than how short they made the Baylan Skoll figure. Ray Stevenson 6'3", Ivanna Sakhno 5'8" not the same height.
Damn the close up shots of our boy Wolfe hurts the soul Definitely prefer having no "weathering" over this bantha poodoo style they are doing! Solid Video guys 💯
I understand why they do it this way, it's to make sure all the figures come out the same, like with the hand painting you could have one figure that has great paint apps and another of the same figure that could end up with crappy paint apps, and when they were doing the plastic-free packaging you couldn't see if the figure had good or bad paint apps.
I like consistency figure to figure even though it's not ideal for troops. Don't have any digi weathered figures, but seems like toning down the colors seems would help.
The problem is, if Hasbro doesn't use the ink-jet printer to apply the "weathering", their only other option is to utilize a warehouse full of underpaid Chinese workers to apply it by hand (the infamous "paint apps") which will give you a much better result, but at a much higher per-unit cost. I think a possible middle-ground would be to print the weathering using more than one color, which would allow them to anti-alias the "dirt" somewhat and so it blends into the underlying color. But I agree completely--the one-color weathering just doesn't work.
@@OutOfTheBasement Hasbro has shown us in the past that they're capable of doing quality weathering without raising the price point, so who knows? Pick your battles, I say. Character height/likeness is much more important than deco apps; in my humble opinion.

I couldn't find a Remnant Trooper back in the day so I made my own...looks pretty good..I reckon alot of collectors tweak there figures for optimal greatness..cheers boys🍺🍺🍻
Personally i prefer a clean figure because i do the weathering myself, but if a figure is gonna be weathered, i think with some revision, digital weathering can look better than the older style of weathering. I think for characters in armor like stormtroopers and clones the digital works better, but for characters like baylan with natural materials it doesnt work as well I know alot of people love the rex figure, but on my copy because of the way he was weathered, his chest and lower body were basically stained yellow while his legs and arms were still primarily white. Ideally what id like to see would be army builders having some variant weathering patterns that can get printed on, and named characters like rex or cody would only need the specific weathering pattern.
I feel I should clarify a little. When doing specific characters from a specific scene, then I think the weathering is welcome. What I don't want is regular troopers or characters having weathering. A regular Stormtrooper or Clone shouldn't, but remenent troopers and Captain Rex should have weathering.
Agree that paint apps have declined significantly in the line. As much as engineering and articulation have improved, paint apps have declined. I think it’s labor costs in Asia where these things are painted that is driving a lot of it. Hand painting is driving up the toy companies manufacturing budgets per figure and reducing their profit margin. So they are looking at different ways to paint figs for less cost. Spector creative had a really good video awhile back about how paint apps have changed across mass produced figures in the last few years. It’s not surprising that a tiny figure like wicket got nicer paint on it. They could do that with that figure and still hit the overall budget per figure since it is so small and used less plastic, had fewer joints, etc. Krsaantaan came with a higher price point to get that paint. I actually really like the remnant trooper. I think the combo of what you guys call the toasted marshmallow effect together with all the flaked paint effect on that particular figure is pretty effective. But overall, I do agree the older hand painted weathering was much better. The question is, would you want to pay more to get that quality of paint? I personally would. I have been saying for awhile that I would like to see the black series jump up to a 35-40 per figure price point so we can get back to better paint apps and piece count and less unpainted plastic in a line that was conceived as “the ultimate version” of action figure for these characters. Sign me up.
Would the community as a whole be okay with the $35-$40 price point though? You gotta remember it's the Black Series community. I feel like price sticker-shock drives this community's overall opinions on everything. A lot of people aren't thinking about actual paint hits, piece count, etc. As always I appreciate you checking out the video and sharing your thoughts, Jhawk! -Justin
@@OutOfTheBasement no I think you’re totally right. most people complain about the price already. Of course they also complain about the lack of paint and lack of accessories. They just don’t want to pay more for quality. They expect more for nothing. I would gladly pay it, but I’m likely in the minority. I also don’t really collect any other lines, so My toy budget is completely dedicated to black series, so that certainly drives my perspective. Star Wars has always been special to me and I will gladly pay for the line to be top tier
I would mind less if it was a cleaner pad printing process like Lego. But digital printing is inherently the antithesis to weathering which is meant to recreate something natural.
On some like Miggs (in Imperial disguise) it does look pretty bad. Partly that's because the grime on his feet and legs is a different colour to that on his chest. Other figures I don't look as bad. I mean when they're on the shelf they look ok. I do agree that the painted not printed look is best. The slight variations are great. Oh and I love me a removable helmet when done right. Caps and hats too. Cad Bane is a good un. He can hold his hat in his hand or wear it at a jaunty angle. Now they're giving us clones with removable bucket. C'mon Hasbro do the same with the Stormies. Who's with me? 😀
We don't like the fact that the Clone Troopers have removable helmets. It makes for wonky proportions since they have to sculpt it to fit that head in there. Alt pegs would make for better proportions. -Justin
The digital printing is being used wrong, the little fine details on the figure like Mandos mini bombs should be digitally printed. Weathering and dirt should always be applied
Morak & Baylan have terrible looking weathering. Ohh that oxidation is just not good at all. Shin's weathering looks better , but not great. The P1 helmet from Dok Ondar is great weathering , need more like that. I believe they could still give us some good weathering. Thanks guys for the video.
I think Shin may have some actual dry-brushing on her, which is why it looks a bit more natural. That P1 helmet that comes with Dok is pretty nice! -Justin

Yeah the poop smear is real on that figure! -Justin
I legit LOVE the Remnant
🤷🏻♂️
But at least his hand grenade has the paint apps on it for the Remnant Stormtrooper.
I don’t think remnant trooper has a grenade accessory. -Nate
@@OutOfTheBasement The round canister on their belt at the back that’s the grenade. It was made that way as a visual cue to the German “stick” hand grenades of WW2.
@@nicholasdickens2801 Oh okay, I thought you meant he came with a separate one.
@@OutOfTheBasement Sorry I should have been specific.
We need some new tie fighter pilots and snowtroopers and a bantha for the tusken raiders keep collecting out of the basement 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That would be cool. -Justin
I liked my Mando jizzz fig ohh that was snow no lol I didn't know that was snow I thought he had been demoted from bounty hunter to jack booth cleaner naww this is lol but I bought it cause the onley actual Mando figure I've seen on the shelf I had a arms that onley up and downed the waist swiveled the legs don't move at all figure iam gen-×/D-x I was litterley about to risk sacrificing a Boba fett fig and repainting it my self just to have a Mando t.v. figure I've been touching up eye brows abd little paint flaws for years but never a hole figure not since the led figures / miniatures me and fellow needs painted back in the real D&D days before any wizard of the coast bullshit back when it was a now extinct company called t.s.r any way ive been tempted too exacto off the snow bull shit and get out the touch up paint and repair any thing I might have a discrepancy with but ide rather just buy one done right and I've seen all over the utube this new Mando with a cloth cape and now hasbro executive jizz allover his outfit but living in action figure hell indep. Missouri I doubt I'll ever see that one on the shelf it will be time too over pay so.e one with plastic money to go get one on the internet or to wait it out for its hundredth reboxing or tell the put more corporate jizz on it now thats a lol moment
Thanks for watching, Tommy! Appreciate you sharing your thoughts. -Justin
I thought wolf came out good I have no problem with the paint on him
That's fair! Just really gives me a "poop troop" vibe when the rest of his armor is completely clean. -Justin
@@OutOfTheBasement I think the could do a better bottom part of wolf boots and shin guards
True, especially for figs like clones really annoys me, JUST DO IT PROPER! P.S Fig came and I want to thank ye lads for it again, looks excellent signed by the boys on my shelf!-Tom
That's awesome that the package came all safe! -Justin
I must be in the minority., I don't mind the "marshmallow" trooper, but I can see the point. They look great on my shelf lol peace 😂
Thanks for checking out the video! -Justin
It looks like plastic decals not paint The “battle damage” on grievous looks like stickers 😂 really cheesy looking
