@@bradydunn5910 alcohol is a drug by definition. just because its legal in most countries of the world it doesnt mean that it does different things to the brain and your health. lol.
So glad you're doing this one. It is probably my favorite and I don't think it got the credit it deserved. It's more stripped down and really showcases Chris's voice.
This song hits me differently. O remember having a tough day in college about 15 years ago. I went out to my car and put on a rock station. This song came on, i maxed out the volume and my day was fine after that. I battled drug addiction and alcoholism for many years.
Ahhhh, that VOICE!! Fuckin miss that... Chris was one of a kind! RIP Another one of those almost happy sounding songs, that holds such a deeper, darker subtext... This is one of my favorite Soundgarden tracks.
Brad: Gives a passionate speech about the topic of this song, exploring the possibilities of it being about murder, a brain tumor, or maybe even suicide. Lex: It's about drugs 😐 Brad: Oh. That's much simpler. 😂🤣😂
When Lex says "Pop? Uggh No!" That warmed my heart. She likes her music real! You're a lucky man Brad, she's a keeper! Any woman who has a such a passion for real music and loves to debate it is one to hold on to. You guys make me smile every day. I love how you approach songs and delve into them without taking things overly seriously. Cheers me up when I get home from work and want to chill on youtube. Rest in peace Chris Cornell, one of Soundgarden's best from the days just before they originally split up. Miss you Chris x
I think the line that hits me most is "follow me into the desert, as desperate as you are" meaning you want so badly to have parts of me that I can't give...so if we go out here, and I lose my head, would you lie for me? So you can keep me or so I won't have to face myself. Along with "out in the sunshine. The sun is mine" ,you want the happy good part of me...can you handle the dark. And a burden in my hand because he now feels responsible for someone else's happiness when he doesn't have his own
Pretty sure this song is about heroin addiction…”I shot my love today” is shooting heroin, “I lost my head again” is about relapsing, and the needle is the “burden in his hand”…at least that’s how I always interpreted it
The lyrics of "Burden in My Hand" suggest the song is about a man who murders a woman he is in a relationship with and leaves her in the desert, not without regret. Some fans believe the lyrics are 'deeper' than the surface and indicative of something such as drug abuse or an abusive relationship; however, the guitarist Kim Thayil called the song "the "Hey Joe" of the '90s."[1]
I absolutely LOVE your reactions to Chris Cornell/Soundgarden/Audioslave songs. You both have very different reactions to them. Brad seems to try to make sense of the lyrics, while Lex listens, gets her ideas and vibes with it. These are songs I love listening to and it's awesome seeing you guys reacting to them ❤
Great driving song😀 Cornell does so much metaphorical language that sometimes you just gotta assume he's doing the tortured soul thing, and just appreciate the music and his goosebumps voice. Try "Like Suicide", and don't find out what it's about until after a reaction. Epic song, probably my fav.
Lex smacking down the idea of being in a pop band made my day. Brad, buddy, she just said she wanted to be in a grunge band. Grunge artists were pretty much anti-pop in everything they did!! I could definitely see Lex in a grunge band. And I'd buy her band's album in instant!
Like many of your viewers, I love Soundgarden / grunge also. Your willingness to listen to grunge & metal with an open mind is one of the reasons i was initially drawn to your platform. Soundgarden has some great songs from early in their recording careers that often get overlooked. Some great early ones are - Gun; Beyond The Wheel; I Awake; and Loud Love. Thanks for your reactions and i hope you do more Soundgarden.
"Close your eyes and bow your head, I need a little sympathy. For the fear is strong and love is for everyone who isn't me" -- One of the best lines ever written.
This is my new favorite addiction 😁 Love seeing you guys experience hearing some of the soundtrack of my life thus far for the first time, and me riding along, getting to remember what it was like and revisiting memories. You guys rock 🤘
This was so good because the two of you showed the process of being a fan of this music. She was grooving to the performance and groove of the music, without a ton of thought to the lyrical content. He is sitting there reading the lyrics and probably thinking the song is really messed up. Yep, that’s 90’s Seattle rock for you in a nutshell.
Love you Chris. To all my brothers who have battled with these struggles with addiction and generally living in this world. Blessings on you and your family ❤
As someone who grew up immersed in grunge and the grunge scene at its peek I love to see how much Lex loves it! Makes me happy! Keep up the great videos!
One of my best memories to this song was going sand boarding with the folks in 2011 and I was standing on top of this dune looking out the view of other sand dunes while having my ear buds in listening to this song.
Just discovered your channel and have been watching tons of the videos. I haven't listened to many of these songs in years and its a reminder that I need to revisit them! I love Lex's spirit. You guys are great!
Cornell's voice allowed for such cool song arrangements because he could sing to any style of music. Just sooooooo much passion in his delivery on this one.
saw them 2x. .once I worked security backstage and front of the stage at lollapalooza(1996) when they played with metallica, the ramones, and the wu tang clan....it was right when this song was on the radio.....I then saw them again in 2013....my friend and I went to the top of an outside theater to smoke. well at the outer/upper reach of the outdoor theater his voice literally was as powerful as you hear in this video...always loved his voice when I was young and they were out, but that show in 2013 showed me how he is an alltime great vocalist...one of the best ever
This came out when I was a teenager and was one of the first actual albums I ever got into (my big brother bought the CD). I always wanted to have this track playing in the opening cinematics of a tank game or tank movie at the time. Now I want to start a road trip in the summer with this on the stereo, car windows open, sunglasses, driving into the sun.
Usually Lex hits the meaning of songs but this time Brad nailed it "Self Deletion" is the perfect way to describe the meaning of this song. Right on Bro.
Rain When I Die is such a dope song. The melody when they go into the hook is so catchy, almost like an unexpected bit of beauty in a morass of angsty noise. Just drags you in.
I think this song is the "Hey Joe" of the 90s in more ways than one. It's about shooting your lover (but in this case the "love" is addiction). The dessert the writer finds himself in is the wasteland of drug withdrawal. A world where the colors are less colorful, nothing tastes or feels as good. He bemoans his lost love saying "it's just a burden in my hand, an anchor in my heart, a TUMOR in my head" (it's escalating to worse and worse things and he needed to get rid of "her"). It's a very cynical song though. He isn't heading to a better place without "her". He's headed to a lie. He's going to try to live in a place where "a moon is painted on a picture of heaven and all the little pigs have God" (yikes). I think it's a song about killing the thing that loves and sustains you, for your own good, and then realizing that it's...not worth it. For anyone who has left drugs behind, you'll understand exactly what he means. Sometimes, even years later, the colors don't look as colorful and the tastes don't taste quite as good. Leaving drugs behind is soooo necessary, but, sometimes it feels like we never quite leave that desert.
Somehow this song is the one I like the most. And feel it the deepest since I heard it for first around 97-98. It’s just the song I want in my funeral at the end. 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹
People saying it's about drug addiction, well they're wrong. It's about how a man shot his wife or lover. Kim Thayil said it was this generations Hey Joe.
i’ve never used drugs and yet this is still one of my favorites from Chris. his voice is amazing in this song, and i love the music in it. Chris my heart is still broken you left this world.
The song is about Chris' battle with drug addiction-burden in my hand. He was very open about his struggles with both addiction and depression.
After digging into the lyrics of their songs, I must agree...THE DAY I TRIED TO LIVE was another example
He was an alcoholic not a drug addict, it was alcohol

In 97, Soundgarden personally closed out the grunge era with this masterpiece of an album.
You can tell Lex is grunge by her response to Brad saying she's a pop chick lol
I know, right! It was a perfect response to that suggestion.
Right, I felt that too.
She's a metal chick!
To answer Chris's question in this song.... yes, I have cried for him. Many times. He was such an amazing talent and is sorely missed.

The guilt, mostly… Sadly..
