Its one of the original Soundgardens last song before the long breakup. And its one of their best by far. They are fully matured as songwriters, musicians and a group at this point. Its brilliant.
Chris Cornell is one of the greatest lyricists ever, any genre. No fat, no wasted words. He was also big into allegory and metaphors so he may have been referring to his soul or self or spirit... or another word that maybe starts with a different letter.

Chris has been vague about the lyrics but said it was more imagery of destitute guy. Maybe ‘love ’ is a drug (shot up) or his heart (ability to love is dead). Burdon in my hand....By "I left my love today" I believe he means the bottle or needle, particularly where he mentions in the sand. The song is about drug / alcohol dependance and falling off the wagon hence ' would you cry for me'.
Chris did an album with Timbaland called “Scream.” It’s a very different sound for Chris, but it works like a charm. Check out “Part Of Me” as an appetizer.

@@brandonstandberry8236 I think you’re right. Grief can eat you alive. He lost too many young friends so early on. He said in an interview (I am paraphrasing here, don’t come for me) that it’s nearly impossible to get over the loss of someone close especially when that person dies so young. I believe that a big part of his struggle was unresolved grief. I can’t imagine being in my 20’s and having so many young people die around me. Even though he wasn’t close with Kurt Cobain he certainly knew him, Layne Staley’s death was tough on him as well and Andrew Wood was his roommate for almost a year. I know that when Chris performed alone he always had a red telephone on the stage with him that had belonged to Jeff Buckley. Certainly he was a big influence.

It's a really interesting idea, everyone sees something like this in simple black & white, but reality is so much more complex. Mistakes can be extreme but they can still be mistakes, that doesn't take them away but, whether or not anyone wants to acknowledge that side of the story, that can be a HELL of a burden to carry, to live with. Just another side of humanity that society ignores. Kind of like how we want 'bad people' to be locked up, then expect them to just reintegrate into society after serving time, and any trouble they have is "well, they only have themselves to blame" - yea, but that's still a burden holding them back regardless of it being 'their fault' or whatever, and this is how the cycle of criminals falling back to crime when they have nothing else continues. Society wants to ignore this though, just "don't think about it and it isn't a real problem..."
The song is a spinoff of Neil Young's Down by the River where he sings (Neil) "Down by the River, I shot my Baby...Shot her dead...". Chris loved that song and this is his homage to it

I don't think it's just about literally shooting someone though, I think it's also a metaphor for drug addiction. Take the chorus for example, what I think when he says "I shot my love today, would you cry for me?" is someone shooting heroin or something into their veins, and wishing someone would feel sorry for them when really all they see from others is judgement. Same with the "I left her in the sand, just a burden in my hand" bit I imagine he's eluding to like he left the needle lying there and all he has now is a burden to carry.
