BUICK E-JOB: The Art of Cutting & Hand-Forming a Traditional Kustom '49 Buick Sedanette | EP30
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 гру 2023
- He cut up his wife's 1949 Buick with one directive: "Don't make it look stupid." Sectioned, chopped and pancaked, the Buick E-Job, crowned 2023 Custom of the Year and winner of multiple show awards, is nothing short of rolling art, a masterpiece in metal hand-crafted over six and a half years in his spare time. Cody Walls brings his traditional kustom with its 408 Buick Nailhead V8 to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas then meets up with Nicole to explain the details of the stunning show car and cruise the sleek sled across the desert.
MORE ABOUT CODY WALLS:
Owners of Traditional MetalCraft, Cody and wife Erin reside in Delaware. As a third generation hot rodder, Cody knew he wanted to build hot rods and customs from the time he was six years old. He built his first custom at 15-a '64 Chevy Impala-then went on to earn a scholarship to WyoTech where he specialized in rod and custom fabrication. Since then he's worked as a freelance fabricator for some of the East Coast's top hot rod and custom shops, earning a reputation as the go-to fabricator for complex metalshaping. With 17 years of experience, he founded Traditional MetalCraft in 2016.

Just want to take a minute to acknowledge how well shot this is. The attention to detail in lighting and sound is first class. Thanks again for all the effort - it doesn't go unnoticed.
Thank you!! It's a team effort here at Detour and we appreciate the comment!!
There the best

They are . . . ✌️😎
Awesome car Cody and Erin! Great metal work! Funny how Nicole probably thought that a Monster Truck was easier to drive than the Buick Boat. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching!!!
This Buick is a Piece of Art almost to goood to drive it outside on the road.
Yes..we agree!! Thank you for watching!
Sectioning this car over a weekend is pretty nuts. The firewall, the inner fender wells, the radiator shroud.... This guy is a master metal worker.
We couldn't agree more!!! We're so glad you appreciate it!! Thanks for watching!
So many show cars fall into being a bit overdone on the styling, but the proportions and overall effect on this one easily show why it wins everywhere it I shown.
I really appreciated the skill displayed in the video.
We agree!! Glad you enjoyed watching!!
That is one sweet looking and sounding 49' Buick sedanette. It's flat out amazing to me too that Cody had all that sectioning done and the body put back in place in one weekend. I can't imagine what it must have felt like when the president saw the car and said that it had to be in SEMA central. Thank you so much Nicole and Cody for sharing that Beauty with rest of the UA-cam world. May y'all have a good one have fun take care.
P.s. I'll be showing this one to my Dad tonight. He too is a 49' model human haha
I'm watched this up near Corvallis, Or.
Thank you so much for the comment!! We're glad you enjoyed watching!! Happy New Year to you in Corvallis, Oregon!!
I kept stopping the video so I could just sit here and take it all in. Cody, that car truly, truly is a work of art - thank you for sharing it with us (and your wife!). Nicole - again, we live vicariously through your enthusiasm and I'm looking forward to the next drive! Your buddy in Wisconsin...
Thank you..we're so glad you like it!! We appreciate you watching!!
Thank you
That craftsmanship in that car is insane.
Yes...we agree!! Thanks for watching!
This automobile is light years ahead of the Y job. Superb metal work and jewel like mechanicals. His invovations with the headlight, gas cap and tai;l lights it's masterful.
I would have swapped the engine and suspension to make it more road worthy but it's his art - Beautiful automobile and deserving of the prizes he received for it. Thanks Nicole -
Thank you for watching!!
18:50 The sound of the exhaust shook my desk. Yes, that car commands respect 1500 miles away at my house in Chicago.
I love seeing the custom work that guys like Martin Bros, Chip Foose, and Gene Winfield make, but even those guys turn out a flop now and then. THIS IS MAGNIFICENT! And Cody did it mostly by himself in only 6 years? Mad respect for Cody and his friends. I'm not sure how Cody will out do this masterpiece, but I can imagine more great cars will come out of his shop.
This morning I was watching a Dennis Collins video of some super cool Pantera's and thought to myself, 'Nicole should be presenting this Pantera'. Minutes later, BAM!, Nicole is on-point with something infinitely more cool and interesting.
Paying attention to the editing of this episode and how it really showcases Cody's work proves what an great team Nicole works with. As usual, I can't wait to see another Detour. Thanks Nicole for sharing the awesomeness you find in the car world. 🤗
Thank you so much!! This really means a lot to all of us here at Detour! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
Thank you for the kind words
This is why I love this channel. Nicole’s attention to what the car owners say and her true appreciation of what goes into making these cars. Merry Christmas and a happy peaceful New Year. Watching from Pennsylvania.
Thank you so much...we appreciate that!! Thank you for watching from Pennsylvania!!
OMG - this is a fantastic episode! The car is a work of art and truly displays Cody's passion for cars, creativity, and talent working with metal. I love the chop and pancake - true art. The sound of the car is music. I hope your wife loved her new car and actually gets to drive it. Thank you for sharing this Nicole and Cody for creating this!
Sno Dawg
BTW - this car reminds me a bit of what the Tucker Torpedo's cool cousin would look like!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching and for the nice comment!!
I can't believe the paint all came out the same. I have some experience with metallics and pearls and I wouldn't have risked it. Great job on everything! Amazing work.
Thank you for the comment!! Glad you enjoyed watching!
When you're over a barrel, I guess it's all or nothing. Doesn't sound like he had many choices to weigh out. Just had to do it, come what may. And the gods smiled upon him!
Trust me it was nerve racking
@@EastCoastChannelJob My daughter & I wrapped up a project at 6am this morning. She's at photgrapher with it now--10am. It's not 100%, but good enough for pictures. Sounded like you were in similar situation.
@EastCoastChannelJob all that cutting, grinding and welding must've given you nerves of steel man! 🙂
Having some small experience with metallic paint on one of my vans, I have to say that the level of skill on display in that paintwork is mind blowing.
My compliments from here in SW UK 🤙
Looking forward to seeing more of your work in the future 🫡
You're so good at this, Nicole! I just love how star struck you look to begin with! So genuine and enthusiastic! There's just nobody else who does a car show like yours.
Thank you...I appreciate that!! So glad you enjoyed watching!
Sooooooo old school cool! The man has metal skill! The car is pure art. I don't follow the show car circuit, so I was not aware of this car. Thanks Nicole for enlightening us all.
We're so glad you enjoyed watching!! Thank you!
What a beautiful build! Erin needs to take Nicole for a ride in her car. I really would love to see a second channel of spouses driving with Nicole, the stories in parallel or series would be amazing counterpoint to the main video. Much love for all!!
We're glad you like it!! We appreciate the comment!!
This made me smile so much! Awesome car! When Erin popped up from the backseat, I busted out laughing. Nice work!
We appreciate you watching...glad you enjoyed it!!
For me this episode confirms my opinion that these type of vehicles are more than just automobiles. They are a form of artwork and creativity that just goes unnoticed and under appreciated by the general public. Thanks for bringing these pieces of artwork to us.
Our pleasure!!! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!
This guy is insane. Amazing talent. This thing is incredible. WOW!
We're glad you enjoyed watching!!
Thank you
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour It was very good find. This show was really cool. I love that you’re genuinely interested in these cars and the stories around them. We’d never see them like this if it wasn’t for you…, your show is really good, I really like it. Every car is incredible. But then again, you could make a show about a toy pedal car and we’d all still watch it just to see you. You looked incredible as usual, loved the kicker bit, I couldn’t believe what it did to your hair…. you’re still the coolest girl on UA-cam. Thanks for your response.
Be well Nicole.
@@EastCoastChannelJob Oh hey! That car is incredible! You’re a master with metal. Everything is so perfect. That car is a work of art. Well done!
Thank you for the kind words I greatly appreciate it
This guy is winning in spades. He takes the phrase "built not bought" to a whole new level. Awesome car.
Yes...we agree!! Thank you for watching!!
Love the car. You have been baiting us for a while, well worth the wait. Loved his wife popping up at the end, that was awesome.
Yes...she was such a good sport!! Thank you for watching!
Happy New Year Nicole🎉 Great work Cody on this car! You definitely deserve all the awards. Thanks again Nicole for showcasing this car on your UA-cam channel.
We're so glad you enjoyed watching!! Happy New Year!!
Wow--what a masterpiece that car is! And Cody is such a humble and unassuming guy. Really love it that you went through what all the bodywork process were and showed how they were done.
We're so glad you enjoyed watching...thank you!!
Amazing amount of detail in the modifications. Beautiful creation👍🏻👍🏻
Yes...we agree!! Thank you for watching!!!
First car I saw at SEMA and it brought the crowd. Unbelievable!
Thank you for the comment!!
This is so way cool! I can appreciate all he has done to this beautiful ride. Glad this video was on the UA-cam stream today.
Us too! We appreciate you watching...glad you like it!!
Not only is every detail this car impeccably done, this is the best presentation I've had the pleasure to see.
Wow, thanks! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
It’s beautiful to know that there are still craftsman like this in the world. Wonderful video.
Thank you for watching...glad you enjoyed it!
What an incredible interview with such enthusiasm, I loved it, and this man’s work is second to none. His father would be very proudand of course Erin😁God bless.👍💪
Thank you for the kind words
Thank you!! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!
Being from the UK, and an MG fan, I can't say I crazy love this car. But the workmanship is stupendous, the way he has captured the curves but reduced the visual bulk; genius. A pure work of art, a labour of love, an expression of skill. Wow.
We're so glad you appreciate the workmanship!! Thanks for watching
That colour is BOSS! I'll bet it looks alive in real life. I really appreciate how you choose and treat your guests. It seems to be as much about the owner as the car. It's inspiring to see and hear these craftsman talk about their creations. You do wonderful job of not focusing on the technical and getting right into the vision. I love personal expression!
Thank you so much for your kind words. We're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
Love it when the girl rose on the backseat. And asks "How do you like my car". That was awesome. Go watch it. It is amazing.
Haha...that was great!! Thanks for watching!!
Well I for one am completely impressed by the entire program. Car, builder, host, and production quality. Magnificent vehicle.
Thank you...we're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
Thank you Erin for letting Nicole drive your very very beautiful car hats off to your husband for doing this for you!!!
Love this comment!! Thank you for watching!!
Sir, you get a A+++ from me. My first custom was a 50' chev that I still miss today. Unfortunately no pictures. Now-a-days at 81yrs I appreciate your work. I'm watching from Rio Vista, CA

What an amazing car. Cody, you absolutely deserve all the accolades you've been awarded for this masterpiece. Thank you for this experience. Thank you for letting Nicole show this vehicle. I will be looking forward to your future endeavors...
Thank you for watching!!
OMG....WOW this is so beautiful. I would be terrified to take it out on a public street, because some idiot would run into it. Cody did awesome job customizing this Buick. Great job this this video Nicole. My hat is off to you, well done.
We're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
The best episode with the coolest car you've done yet. Outstanding!!
Thank you...we appreciate that!
A master of metal forming... What a ride!

If there was a Nobel prize for custom cars, Cody wins it. Genius meets absolute art. Once again Nicole I don’t know how you do it, but wow perfect presentation. Running out of words to say thank you for such great work.
The Erin cameo at the end was priceless 😂.
Thank you for the kind words
That's very nice! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
Your reaction when you turned the key on the first time is a classic, lol.
Thank you!! We appreciate you watching!
Cody is so tallented, I follow his builds on the HAMB. Everything he does is just beautyful.
Thank you for watching!! We agree...Cody is extremely talented!!
One of my favorite car channels! Love Nicole's enthusiasm. Would be a dream to be featured on this show one day! Although my fabrication skills are no where near the talented people Nicole finds, but hopefully my 66 mustang with a supra engine will be shown to the world when it's perfect!
Thank you...we appreciate that!! Good luck with your mustang!!
Nicole's constant comment of " WOW" completely sums up one of the most beautiful custom cars to date! This car is just amazing, "WOW"watching from the UK
"Wow" thank you for watching from the UK!! We're so glad you like it!
Nicole, you have one of the best channels ever! The variety is insane and how you shoot your videos is top notch. Cody is a true master of his craft. Very old school and that is great. So many want to take short cuts and while the technology is great there's just nothing wrong with doing the body old school.
Yes...we agree!! We're so glad you enjoyed watching...we appreciate the comment!!
Cody is a very talented man. All the small details make it such an amazing final product. He deserves all the accolades. Beautiful custom.
We agree!! Thank you for the nice comment!!
Amazing Talent.
You always find the most interesting cars and car builders , your enthusiasm always, a winner
We appreciate that!! Glad you enjoyed watching!
Thank u Nicole for this fabulous moment with this humble man ....u re the best big up
Thank you so much for watching!!
Anyone who has tried to do metalwork like this has to appreciate the talent Cody Walls has. He put in the extra effort, instead of taking the easy way out and using lots of body filler. I'm glad to see he used a Buick Nailhead instead of the usual Chevy LS motor. Congrats to him for winning so many well-deserved awards. 🏆🏆 I'm not a fan of 'trailer queens', so it was great seeing Nicole getting the chance to cruise (muscle) it around before his wife had gotten to drive it. Once again Nicole, you and your team put out some quality entertainment THANK YOU!! 💯
Thank you for the kind words
Love this comment!! Thank you so much for watching!!

Sorry Billy. I love Cadzilla, but this is my new #1 favorite show car.
Absolutely stunning lines - so clean!
Awesome!! Thank for watching
This car is better than cadzilla by far,, 1 man built it ,,instead of boyds crew,,,,, this car is comfortably driveable , and better proportioned,, it is an ART to reproportion something this well....
What an amazing piece of automotive art. Great video and the cherry on top of the episode was his wife popping up unannounced 😂

...that car is the most subtle, insane thing I've ever seen! Cody, I bow deeply in honor on respect of your talent! Nicole--thank you for showing this masterpiece off!!!
Thank you for the kind words
Thank you for watching!! We're so glad you like it!
The original designers of the cars of the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s deserve a lot of respect for giving us these metal beauties to cut and rework into what we see in kustoms, rods, etc. Using an older engine like the Buick Nailhead is cooler than modern engine transplants, too. Dropping a crate LS or big block Chevy would not have done this car justice, but a lot of guys would go that route. Hats off to all the visualization and work that went into this auto.
Well said!!! Thank you so much for watching!!
second this comment. same respect to the creative manufacturer.
Watching from The Netherlands, this guy is an artist! I have a few mild customs myself but compared to this they don’t hold a candle.
Thank you for watching us from The Netherlands...we appreciate it!
