He should've filed a complaint with the Dept of Labor for his state for all his unpaid, stolen wages. I wish more people did. Then these shady businesses wouldn't be in operation.
The interpretation I had of his comments is that they probably have him working on an independent contractor basis or some kind of commission arrangement. If so, the state labor department isn't going to help him much. The franchise owner is likely gouging the installers by charging them for extras. Things such as low balling the estimated supplies allowed for an installation, then charging him at premium prices for any supplies he needs that are over the owner's low ball estimate. His gross is probably calculated correctly and he is being nickled and dimed to death for the supposed work related back charges.
When we tell people they "should've done this or that" , we are assuming that they are aware of the options/actions that they can take to help and protect themselves. Telling some one to "do something" after the fact doesn't help, they need to know ahead of time. It's important to get the information out there for the public to be aware but businesses will conceal, even government , the information we need to know to protect ourselves.

From what I understand, the only real way to get that compensation back is to get a lawyer. If you can’t afford a lawyer, then maybe get a contingency based one. I’ve been in the blue collar work force all my life. I’ve seen so much shit I should write a book. There is no such thing as an honest or good employer. What gets me is when I’m applying for a job and I’m given a test- asking questions about my honesty & integrity with “what would you do?” scenarios. I think employers should be given those tests, too. I’ve had employers who’ve cheated me out of wages, OT, vacation time, and holiday pay. I’ve had jobs where I’ve had to buy my own supplies, even toilet paper & soap & paper towels for the bathroom. I’ve had to pay $75 non refundable fees for background checks for jobs that only paid $8 hr, plus I had to purchase uniforms. The working class has been getting stiffed for over 30 years now. Barbara Ehrenreich, who recently passed away, authored the book “Nickel & Dimed… On (Not) Getting By in America”. It was published over a decade ago, but employers abusing their employees has been going on for years.
I’m sad to learn of her passing in a random comment section on the internet. I had to read that book in freshman English in college and finally felt heard. That is the “liberalism” they are teaching in schools that conservatives and corporations hate. Hard to take advantage of well educated people.
I like how the president is like "we can't fix something we don't know about". And that's the problem with corporations is there are almost too many levels of management. I've worked for several corporations where employers are frustrated and vocal for a long time. They fall on deaf ears and rarely get up to the person who will fix it.

It's because of shit like this, I like to use small local places around here. When I needed some plumbing work, I put a feeler out on facebook. I got a strong recommendation for the same person over and over. When he came by and crawled under the house, he came back and asked if I would be willing to crawl under the house. Since I don't mind, I changed, went under the house, and he showed me the issue. I approved the work, he got paid and we were both happy. He didn't try and screw me over and he even let me check the work that he did. A few months down the line I decided to replace my kitchen sink. I gave him a call and got the same top tier service that I got before.
Horrible company! I used their services to install new water lines. Then, we noticed our sump pump was running when it wasn’t raining. Come to discover the technician had cut through to washing machine discharge line. They took no responsibility and refused to come back out.
It's really sad that nothing gets done about stuff like this until someone higher up in the company finds out about it. The local office was (apparently) ok with messing-up people's payroll on a regular basis with intention of figuring out why it was messed-up or even fixing the issue. And then they make phone calls and cry on tv about it like it's news to them. If you don't know how your company runs and regularly make sure that people are treated properly, do you really deserve to own a company where you're responsible for other people's livelihood?
I found out a couple years ago that Roto Rooter, that many of them are not actually plumbers. So I had a guy come over to fix our kitchen sick. I was told we need a new garbage disposal but he couldn't replace it for us because he wasn't a plumber. The only thing he could do was clear the clog in the sink but warned it will keep happening with the rusted out garbage disposal. So then he gave me a contact but I still had to pay him like 300 dollars. Then having to call an actual plumbing company ran another 500 dollars. So in total a sink clog turned out to be 800 dollars to totally fix it. Meanwhile before that a few years ago I had Roto Rooter come out to unclog our toilet/bathtub. It was working but then the next day it was clogged again. So they didn't remove the entire clog. They had to bring another person out and while I didn't have to pay a fee for service for the second visit, I still had to pay for them again to unclog the toilet/bathtub which should have been fixed the first time. So a bill from 300 became about 450 dollars. I don't plan to use Roto Rooter again. I only used them because it was the first name I could come up with to call as I was thinking about this undercover boss episode.

My family has build a company from scratch that provides a service. We roughly knew how other companies payed their technicians, but we set the pay up the way we (the owners) wanted to get payed. After a few years we started hiring and soon found out how other companies payed, and we were appalled. Technicians in other companies had to face the possibility of having negative pay checks, and as soon as we heard that we knew that we never would let that happen. And PERIOD every employee should be able to count on a bare minimum being in their checks, every pay period, guaranteed. If unreliable paychecks, breeds unreliable work, and a bad customer experiences, and the fastest way to bankruptcy.
As a 25+ year HVAC tech a lot of companies are doin this shit of paying you only when you sell. Years ago you were judged on work quality and reliability- not anymore. Your a number at the end of every quarter that’s it. I’ve seen complete hacks target old people and people who just don’t know anything about heating and a/c and lie and up sell and then considered top techs cause of the numbers. Absolute joke what this is becoming.
I agree there’s two big companies in New Jersey that it’s incredible what they go into a house and try to sell someone a system that we put in for roughly $9000 I’ve seen some estimates $21,000 it’s just all up selling and we always end up going back to all their jobs
That company is super shady. I had them come out for a clogged toilet years ago after my wife and I bought our first house (first plumber I googled…I figured it was a stopped toilet and it shouldn’t be a big deal to clear). Fast forward to GALLONS UPON GALLONS of water that had somehow made it into our bedroom in the carpet. It was ruined. The guy had let the toilet overflow, then spilled a full 5 gallon bucket on the floor. They tried to blame it on me. I’ve never yelled at anyone over the phone but o SCREAMED at the guy who was accusing me of lying and saying it was like that when they got there. It doesn’t shock me that such a terrible company doesn’t pay its workers.
Waters moving & storage in Martinez CA was like that. Had every different thing you did on a different time card, pretrip inspection, loading truck at warehouse, driving out, unloading furniture at the home, loading at the home, driving to the next job, driving back to the warehouse, unloading at the warehouse, and every day a few of those time cards were not counted. The worst was one month after working 240 hours one month there was 50 hours missing, (12 hour days were common and so were a few 18 hour days) and at the end of the month (you were only allowed 1 time a month to have the office deal with a payroll issue) it took 8 hours of searching all the paperwork to find it all, and it was all double overtime, then I was let go for taking up too much of the office staffs time for "trivial matters". He would also "do you a favor" by paying you cash some days so you can "save on not paying the tax money", but what it really did was prevented you from racking up the double overtime!!!
If you want to keep good people, keep them happy, explain everything about their compensation, deduction taxes etc and make sure there are no surprises. Payroll has to be very transparent and easily auditable not some secret place that paychecks come from. Employees should know how much is expected on their checks and if they don't or feel they are getting ripped off then something shady might be going on. If you ask around this might be a recurring problem with other employees and may lead to someone doing actual shady things.
You may be right! If she really cared, she would've gasped, at the pathetic amount of money the tech was making! I don't care where that guy lives - If he is productive, he should be pulling down $1000.00/week after taxes!
How was this even possible? "We'll take care of these compensation issues" sure is a nice way of saying "sorry we got caught skimming your paychecks, we didn't know you knew. Please don't press charges." This sounds like straight up criminal activity.
My son just quit a similar plumbing job where he was paying for parts and supplies and running the jobs like an independent contractor. Money divided by hours was less than minimum wage with tons of stress. Basically full commissioned sales with the responsibility of running the job while looking for more sales and the company took most of the money.
She didn't even refund him the 8 weeks when they only paid him half.... He is worth more and should move on to another company... Hope this guy is doing well now ♥
Unless it was written in the contract that certain deductions,i.e fuel costs, would be made then not paying the correct amount is theft. Owners should have been arrested. I wonder what the customer was being charged

You might be wrong. Do you think that maybe they are OVER paid. I am willing to bet that in some of these Franchised Shops, there are family members working say in the office as an Office Manager that are not needed AT All. Kick them out for a month and see how things go. If smoothly, they were worthless. If not, revaluate their pay with the market rate for the same responsibilities. Adjust accordingly. More like, cut their pay to within range for their knowledge, skills and experience. It is a dream of mine to study a company and advise on how they can increase profits without raising prices to the customer. It would not be pretty. It would not be free.

Indeed. This is a crime.
What shocks me is that a competent plumber is only making 500-600 weekly 😱. He could become independent and make that in a day or two.
He might not have his ticket yet.
There is way more liability as an independent plumber. Working for a company takes most of the liability off the employee if something goes wrong.
@@TheDiverseShot Yeah, but busting your rear 5-6 days a week 10+ hours a day for 500-600 a week is stupidity on steroids..... A water heater install, new faucet install, and unclog a drain in a day could match his weeks pay.
@@michaelh7527 that amount of money is definetly low for sure, but just in general most people do not wanna go independent because of the liability factors.
@@TheDiverseShot Believe me, I know about that 😁. My brother started off as a laborer and became an apprentice. Worked all through his 20s and into his 30s. He got tired of low pay and constantly hearing the owner biotch about overhead and blah blah blah all while his wife drove an expensive SUV and he drove a Ford Raptor and stored his triple motor contender boat at the back of the shop. He said the dudes wife worked there at the front office and had more silicone than the paint department at home Depot 😂 😂. She would flirt with the guys and pretty much do nothing all day.
But he decided to go out on his own. Business picked up quick as people want their drain unclogged right now lol. But he picks and chooses what he wants.

And that's the problem with corporations is there are almost too many levels of management. I've worked for several corporations where employers are frustrated and vocal for a long time. They fall on deaf ears and rarely get up to the person who will fix it.
This channel always posts just enough to make you have to look up the episode to find out what you really want to know

@J/M Berrington I’m aware. That was my point
Let me just say they aren't leading me to pay a platform to let me watch full episodes of Undercover Boss. They just push me to seek out other UA-cam channels
"Shady" is probably the most accurate description of that company!
These companies need to prosecuted, someone needs to go to jail.
Need to meet the boss down a dark alley

I agree, as soon as we start prosecuting employees for theft when they are on their phone while on the clock. It goes both ways.
@@kesselrunheroj8497 Employees are arrested for stealing from their job all the time, but being on their phones isnt illegal, and you can fire them. Stealing the paychecks of your employees is illegal, but low wage earners dont have the resources to take appropriate recourse. If you want the big bucks as an owner then you you rightfully have more responsibility and should be held to a higher standard. But of course you would deflect from owners ripping off their employees paychecks with "but their on their phones while on the clock" as if thats in any way equivalent to stealing hard workers paychecks. gtfoh
I’m a semi retired cook. I ensure payroll closeout is valid every week. It’s the most important task, but under the radar. Every cook, needs to be paid his/her hours. I’ve only processed maybe 10 payroll discrepancies in 16 years. Our retention rate has moved up significantly. Keeping great people is really an art. Making sure they are paid properly is mandatory.
I could have sworn I read, "I'm a semi retired crook," and was very confused/concerned.

Love that little tear wipe she has at 2:57. Almost makes you think she gives a shit about that guy.
That end part had me lol'ing. Not at the gentleman's problem...but just reality smacking this fairy tale in the dirt. The owner tells you that the problems are going to be taken care of...but the man has had them so long that he's like "We'll see...." I hope he gets what he's earned.
The fact that there wasn't a resolution on air tells me it never was seriously handled .
First, not paying your employee what you contractually hired him for is criminal. Not an "Oversite". Those accounting people need to be criminally charged and then sued in civil court.
My job wasn’t paying me the right rate for over a decade. When the correction was made I asked for back pay. They told me sorry too bad and my union went along with it.

It's pretty sad the boss didn't know this already.
I worked for a Mr. Rooter in Oregon City, Or. 11 year's ago, everything you just heard is and has been happening for a very long time . I remember that it was like a revolving door of plumber's & drain technicians with this issue being the number one complaint. Each Mr Rooter is a franchise, therefore I'm at a loss as to what the president can do. The Mr Rooter I worked for is or was owned by a retired McDonald's corporate suite who likes flying planes for fun. ( I know my last statement has nothing to do with the topic, but couldn't resist )
Roto-rooter is the same exact way.
Wayne is so cool, I hope things work out for him
This happens in a lot of businesses. I worked in one place where the GM was changing the time clock when we would clock out ( example .. we clock out at 5:30pm she would change it to 5:10pm this went on for at least a year that I know of ) She ended up getting fired and the company had to pay us what she stole from us .. it cost the company well over $35 thousand dollars.
Why would the GM even care? I mean, I see the owner having a reason but what does a GM gain?
@@chrisvinciguerra4128 .. let me see if I can make this any more clear for you since you failed to understand why she was FIRED. The company didn't know she was doing that ... understand now ?
@@vulcan2882 That wasn't my question and I didn't say that the owner or anyone else knew. I wondered what purpose the GM has in reducing people's hours. I don't see how it would benefit her.
@@chrisvinciguerra4128 .. she was cheating the company as well as the employees. She was caught and the proof was in black & white ( time slips clock / in clock out never matched )

In 2012, total robberies in America amounted around $341 million in property. Wage theft was around $933 million.
When you are working for a company and things are not adding up, never be afraid to speak to the powers that be, of your concerns. A decent company will listen to you and work towards resolving your issue. If the head of a company is not listening, then you know they are just in it for what they can get from you. Shame on them.
I got a feeling she knows what's going on and acting like she cares
I got that feeling too.
She didn't seem that surprised and the phone call never mention 8 weeks short pay- so she knew.
Of course. This is all just marketing.
2:08 that smirk, he knew she was the boss. Handled that like a CHAMP.
A follow up about this would be nice. Where was that money going? My bet is the manager, accountant, HR person or whatever was stealing it from the company and ripping off employees to cover their tracks. Seen it before.
What would be nice is a follow up episode to see if the undercover bosses actually made things better or if it’s all just a bunch of bullshit!
Yes your perfectly right ì think it unreal that so called boss meets him to work a few hours and they give there hole life story in those few hours a load of bullshit what boss listens to all that all for a tv/ UA-cam
It's bs. He gets a couple of correct paychecks, and then it's back to stealing his money again
I would drag up over getting only half my check. It would only happen once and then I would be working for their competition.
Horrible company! I used their services to install new water lines. Then, we noticed our sump pump was running when it wasn’t raining. Come to discover the technician had cut through to washing machine discharge line. They took no responsibility and refused to come back out.
"Can you excuse me, I need to go to the bathroom." *Goes to the middle of the street to make a phone call! 🤦🏻♂️😅😅
She heard about how much he was owed and said “we’ll get this figured out” and not “we’re getting you your money right away” he knows he’s gonna get the run around. Poor guy
This is NOT ACCEPTABLE. If they are doing this to their employees at ANY location, maybe the public needs to reassess using them!! I don't want someone coming to my house, doing a fair job with something I can't do, and I suspect he won't be paid for it.
Needs to be a follow-up to this.
Calm down

I work for a company that rips my pay off as well. There’s been several days they told me to stay late for work and never paid me even though they kept saying over and over I will get paid. After 3 times and not getting paid, I refuse to stay late and I will never trust them again. Luckily I haven’t had much issues with my regular pay.
I work at a hospital with electronic time clocks that you have to swipe in and out…HR continually changes the swipes and if you don’t check your direct deposit you don’t get what you earned
That BS corporate excuse, "We can't fix what we don't know about" is sickening. They can hire as many inspectors as they need to oversee their franchisees.
Yep!!!
I always thought a company would get lots of value from a liaison. Someone who would just go around talking to ppl about issues. But, if you only care about Max profits and people aren't quitting, why try?

Wow 😮, $600 a week for all the hours he’s working is unthinkable for me coming from Australia 🇦🇺, that’s almost poverty line wages, I wouldn’t even get out of bed for that amount of money, I understand everything is more expensive here in Australia 🇦🇺 and our wages are much higher than that, I guess that’s why many move to Australia 🇦🇺 from overseas, even though our cost of living is higher, I was hoping that she’d do more for this gentleman, he seemed nice and committed to the company. Depends on where you live. I live in Oklahoma, where my mortgage is less than $1,000 for 3 bed, 3 bath house. The same house in California would be $3500+. Cost of living varies greatly here, state to state.

I think they are taking conversion into account and still saying that’s a low wage
This is what it means to do commission only work. There is no pay base. It’s solely based on how many customers you sell and how much service you can give and even then it only ranges from 4-7% of that ticket is your pay- but then you have to take your company sale base per month into consideration. If you earned less than what their prior year statistics show you should’ve sold- you won’t get shit. Mattress firm, certain real estate, in home remodel contractors, franchisee sales and third party contractors all pull this shit
I made a whopping $3,000 doing commission work for the entire time I worked for them during a year, and because I had to be licensed, I was considered "my own business". So when it came to tax time, I still somehow owed the government despite getting next to nothing for the entire year. We're talking 60 hour weeks. I busted my hump and did everything I could, but those senior agents were there to just reap the rewards.
I wish there was links to follow-ups on some of the videos to see if some of these investigations ever got taken care of it makes ya wonder.
I think there was and most of them quit because it was all for show.
"This is a great tech, we dont wanna lose him"
These are the words of a true leader. Respect to her for making it right when she found out about the pay issue
I am a disabled lady and I have learn that you can more things if you do it in a certain way. There is a museum in south Florida ( coral castle) He moved very incredibly heavy sculptures to decorate a beautiful place for a lady he loved. She refused to stay marry to him but he created this amazing place. And she never saw it she married someone else. But It’s like a museum you can visit. It’s amazing! people are blown away by these huge statues he moved and he was a tiny man. He did all of this moving in the night all by himself. So if done right you can move things. Always remember to protect your back though.
I went through something similar working for the Macy's department store. I had daily sales goals to meet which were based on the sales that day in the department from the previous year. If I didn't meet them, the balance I didn't make would go into something called deficit, so I rarely made any commission. I worked with a very nice lady who was in the mens department and she was so far behind in deficit that she'd never make any commission even after a good weekend. It was all such a racket.
How can you influence customers that much to make such a difference? Or even to enter the store or department for that matter.
100% agreed.
People cry when they are guilty. Innocents often express anger
That boss was also the same person who gave gave a young man a landscaping franchise and a new truck in a different episode of undercover boss. Lol
Ayup, a good boss recognizes and appreciates a good employee. btw, IMO this guy is gold!
She knew what her company was doing and now I know to never use them.
i have an update: the paychecks are still off consistently. have to stay on top of them or they’ll assume they got you
Crocodile tears 🐊 😢 only because she got called out in person by one of her employees that actually do the hard work to keep her in pearls
You may be right! If she really cared, she would've gasped, at the pathetic amount of money the tech was making! I don't care where that guy lives - If he is productive, he should be pulling down $1000.00/week after taxes!
I kind of thought that, if she really did care she was in a situ where she could have paid the disputed fees+compo WHILE it was being sorted out...
How was this even possible?
"We'll take care of these compensation issues" sure is a nice way of saying "sorry we got caught skimming your paychecks, we didn't know you knew. Please don't press charges." This sounds like straight up criminal activity.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see because this click bait isn't telling us anything.
My son just quit a similar plumbing job where he was paying for parts and supplies and running the jobs like an independent contractor. Money divided by hours was less than minimum wage with tons of stress. Basically full commissioned sales with the responsibility of running the job while looking for more sales and the company took most of the money.
Dude at the end 😅 keeping it real
It's is amazing to see when "some" employers really do care...
She doesn't care, it's all theater for the cameras.
I can’t believe she didn’t just outright give him 10k for troubles
Never phuck with your employee's pay! Always make sure they are well paid!
She didn't even refund him the 8 weeks when they only paid him half.... He is worth more and should move on to another company... Hope this guy is doing well now ♥
I find it hard to understand how an intelligent and perceptive man like this doesn't spot the undercover boss and the camera crew .
Unless it was written in the contract that certain deductions,i.e fuel costs, would be made then not paying the correct amount is theft. Owners should have been arrested.
