"Creative" male artists with their egos are toxic. Ever been around successful male artists? Many times - same story. Male teachers - my kids called one quarter pockets because his pants were so tight the students could get a good look at his junk. They were in middle school. Male classmates in teacher education school... showing nude women in paintings yammering away about form and gesture. Barf. This kind of male behavior is everywhere. Not all men act like this, but the ones who do are never called out - then and there. Many women students are uncomfortable but they never give push back then and there. They talk about it privately after class, after they are abused or raped. Wake up young women, our silence allows this BS to continue.

The Nigerian girl speaks so eloquently about how if you're young and get into the industry it can take your innocence away. I just watched 60 minutes and they had child UA-cam stars and eventually asked the question about taking advantage of children. Now I understand why my mother wouldn't take me to an agency when I asked at age14 or 15.
My friend got drugged by her previous agent as a “revenge,, for leaving his agency. She was 15 at the time and he just left here there in the middle of a huge event with strangers while she was unconcious. Lots of people take advantage of these girls, thank you Vouge for shining a light on this issue
I believe it. It’s all about money and power. I’m a self taught fashion photographer but will never make it big because i don’t have the self centered attitude that most do in this industry.
@@terrahwonneh Because there are so many young girls that want to be models like they see on tv. Their mother ‘s want them to be models too. I’ve been a photographer for over 25 years and I would NEVER would want my daughter pursuing modeling if i had one.
That doesn't solve the problem. That's just more victim blaming. No one over the age of 18 would want to deal with that behaviour either. Agencies and photographers should be held legally accountable for their actions and how they treat models.
Wow, I never would have known models go through things like this. I'm glad they shared these experiences for the young ladies who only see the glamorous side.
My dream is to become a fashion designer and when I achieve that dream, I will make sure that everyone who is working with me is safe and respected. I don’t care what happens but one thing I am sure of is that I will put humanity over everything else.

There are a few exceptions
Imagine how many girls this happens to - girls that never have the opportunity to speak about it. The power imbalance is too severe when you are a young model.
What glitters ain’t gold. I feel bad for them especially when they’re touched. Regardless of how professional the setting may be it’s still your personal space that’s invaded.
Sometimes it is very conflicting, because at some point the designer or photographer really has to adjust and touch the model in some ways. It is really hard to tell the line because it is a job and the designer would expect the model to be ok with these touch ups.
So true. And they can't even say anything or speak up, because ppl will say, "Well yeah, you were posing nude in the first place, so you kinda brought this on yourself".
Xinyue Li It’s called boundaries & they need to be set & adhered to especially young girls! So wrong & justice should be brought to girls wronged by disgusting agencies.
sweetpeace5 I think it is so hard to set a boundary. I have met girls who are very comfortable being touched. I think we should let people know that models mean that you would be touched. Those who are not comfortable being touched in the simplest ways should know that and chose not to enter. But there are indeed people who are taking advantage of models. This makes the situation very complicated.
It’s a reflection of our superficial world..without consumers of this realm, it wouldn’t be an industry. Many models are quite smart (despite what stereotypes would lead you to believe)...and instead of them modeling maybe they could be using their other skills to do things like solve world hunger, medical research etc :) Win, win!!
I swear I was just thinking the same thing. The industry takes a toll on older models, how do you think a 13yo will respond? I would not let my kid do this- too many Harvey Weinsteins out there.
I don't think that any parents should trust any agency with their 13 years old child being in workplace like that.a 13 years old should be in school not in the industry.you can't justify it with anything unless you want them to be there.
I’m so glad that Vogue is actually raising awareness about modeling industry. Instead of being a magazine just about what dress you should wear or the colors of the season, it tries to build a content which opens a lot of hidden doors of the industry, and talks about some important stuff of our culture.
They're fcking hypocrits tho, they've been supporting and nursing this whole fcked up system for literal *decades* Just because it's on trend to care about stuff now, doesn't mean they're genuine about it....

Well, girls. We need to get to it and start talking business. Also, it is not necessary to have a Photography degree to be a good/great photographer. Lots of practice, doing an internship for a fellow photographer and attending workshop/ online classes can take you a long way.
WHOA WHOA WHOA! Wait just a f***ing second! Why are you JUST NOW calling attention to this! What took you so long, and what's in it for you?!
I dabbled in modeling around 18-19. It was like this everywhere all the time, and it seemed like the closer you get to "making it," the more you had to do. sometimes, on some struggling/broke days, I ask myself, "Should i have just done it?" And then something like this video pops up, and I'm ok with my decision
Thank you so much for this series- I use to want to be a model and I am so glad you showed the entire world for what it is. I am also glad I went into science!

When will ppl realize theres a vast majority of “artists” or “photographers” that are legit major perverts but then pretend to make “art”. Saying Letting it all hang to a 13 yr old girl for “art” is disgusting!
As a male photographer, I COULD NOT IMAGINE doing something like that to girls or people generally... I dont understand how desperate or self centered someone could be to scar someone like that... Just awful
I love fashion with all my heart, so much that at the age of 18 I opened my first boutique even though all odds were against me. However, over the years I’m often perplex at how vicious this industry is. One can only imagine what some of these girls go through. May God help them.
I hope Vogue or any other entities would support and defend these models for speaking up. Their first hand testimonies changes the game forever. Props to my favorite models I followed throughout their high fashion journeys - Patricia van der Vliet, Carolyn Murphy, and Hailey Clauson.

This video was an eye opener. All of these models had their own story to tell about what is was like for them to be treated in an uncomfortable way. All of you models are strong for telling your story while doing your job.
The fact that VOGUE is giving these voices a chance to come out in open through its big big big platform, it actually makes me so happy that for once I can actually go out and say this is 2019, this is revolutionary and we are changing for the better
When one woman said that her agent said one photographer was known to have this kind of behaviour!!!what the hell? Some laws have to be put in place to protect them
They send their models there, cause there is a ongoing competition between agencies. As disgusting as it sounds, but they dont want to lose their "good clients and contacts"
I don't think that she was under the same risk as ordinary girls. Her mother is too famous and probably has too many influential friends in the industry as for people to take advantage of her in the same way. If she'd speak out, people would listen and take notice, that would be too risky for them. It's all about power dynamics
I support these videos so heavily! Vogue has the power to provide a platform to shine light upon these kinds of derogatory experiences from vulnerable voices. So powerful.
This is so sadly true. It happened to me or my roommates many times during my modeling career and then continued in my corporate life. Slamming Vogue for posting this is clearly shortsighted because of its reach and vulnerability. The power dynamics of intimidation and bullying is pervasive no matter what industry. And I applaud the models here for their courage to speak out. And for those of us who kept quiet out of fear... explore the variety of healing modalities so that you can adjust your energetic broadcast to heal trauma that gets stored in the body mind and soul.
@@pam3528 I was a male model. The fashion world is mostly ruled by homosexuals trying to abuse the guys. And they earn next to nothing. It's way worse...
In NYC they have these model apartments all over the West Village and Meatpacking district... if anyone else charged $8000 for a 2 bedroom with 6 plus people in there, they would be so charged with a crime Of course the elite can do whatever they want.
Hypocrisy aside, it's good that these models are being allowed to express this side of the industry. It's far more insidious than most people are aware.
if the antm judges hear this, they will tell you not to blame the people around you and take responsibility for yourself, even though the people around you are already abusing you and crossing the line.
As dark as this is I really think it’s important that these models are explaining some of the horrible ways their treated or exploited, to warn other girls. I would personally love an entire documentary behind Gemma Wards story since she was once an “it girl”, left the industry and then returned. A sort of rise & fall story finishing off with her return and what appears to be her new found sense of self.
In these series, Vlada and Gemma deserved the recognition. I bet they have booked all the shows that every fashion models wanted except VS. Esp Gemma who has done all the Big 4 of Vogue

It's sad & unfortunate that there're a lot of young models under age surrounded w a lot of older sharks who sees no boundaries & dignity & most of all respect for the models spc if they're underaged. Just think of them if they're your children do you want any old sharks will do the same to your own children?? Think & have some decency & guilt. 😢
Happychicx These predators give respect and dignity to people who have as much power as they have. These young girls are NOTHING to them. They are objects, not human with dignity.
I remember that vogue cover! I obsessed over it as a young teenager. It's so wild to see Gemma and Vlada and all these women all grown up, talking about how they really feel about the industry.
As a former model with Elite who experienced much of this, I now say that this is the time for women to change the world. We have a platform, we have a voice, and people are listening. It is sad it took this long, but let's run with it.
I hope the modelling industry would get better.. 🙏🙏.. THANK YOU VOGUE FOR THIS VIDEO N THANK YOU TO MODELS WHO SHARED THEIR EXPERIENCES.. ❤❤.. Fighting!!
The saddest part is hearing how many women "couldn't say no". There should never be any reason why your job makes you feel obligated to give up your right to say no, especially when you feel unsafe.
2:21 i remember that photo of her. When my eating disorder was at its worst, I had a binder with it glue to it. I had a lot of pictures of models I wanted to look like back then. I also had Gemma's measurements. It's crazy how people blame the models for being so thin. Yet, they themselves suffered a lot because of it.
I’d really like to see this same video but with Male models instead, it’d be interesting to see the contrast between how the two genders are treated differently, especially in less and more sexualised photo shoots.
I think that it’s great that people are communicating this, because in my opinion what the rest of the world sees about modeling is this “perfect and cool world”. Thanks Vogue.

@@itha5363 You mean same as any entertainment facet and industry. Even same as finance, politics, ANY industry.
"after I told them, my agency told me yeah he's known to do that" that's so infuriating, why not tell her BEFORE the job? these agencies don't care at all for the models. if you know the guy is known to do that at least warn the girl so that she can be prepared for the situation or even refuse altogether.
Lila Hesse because they wanted to make a buck that’s why. Bottom line is the main concern. Gross
the exact same thing happend to me on one of my first shoots in Milan. The photographer touched my, i was super scared and couldnt even react.
When I told my agency, they reacted the same way as in this story.
"Yeah he is know for that". He could've raped me alone in his studio, but whatever.
I even uploaded a video on my YT channel and they took my out of their model board and kicked me out :)
An industry doesn't have to be corrupt for it to flourish.
Equivalent of the casting couch.
Michaela Weber good for you for speaking up👏🏻 im sorry you had to go through this but at least you've learned a lesson not to trust anyone in the industry ❤️

Isn't it their choice to be in the modeling industry though?
How is being a model and being respected not compatible?
Minx well yes, but it does not mean that they merit it.
@@netgidey8601 It's been their dream and they're allowed to chase it. If you're mistreated in school, would you stop going to school and remain uneducated? Or raise your voice against people who're abusing you?
@@netgidey8601 This is sort of true, when the girl said, "it was a big job. I couldn't say no." Well, of course you could say no, but the money was more important.
Perhaps more female photographers would lessen this disgusting abuse. "Creative" men with their egos are toxic to art.
I agree. I still don't understand why most of these photographers are men.
@@liviaclaire I also still don't understand why most designers are men. A woman inherently knows how clothing should fit a woman's physique. This is exactly why so many runway models look like 13yr old boys. These designers don't know how to capture the essence of womanhood in their clothing (except for DVF, because she's a woman).
Wake up young women, our silence allows this BS to continue.
thank you, as a female photogrpaher and ex model I could write a BOOK on how discriminated against are women in fashion photography even though in fact WEare NOT the ones abusing the models
Agatha jay
You’re excusing disgusting behavior and it’s not okay.
Why join the modeling agency at such a young age?
@@terrahwonneh Because there are so many young girls that want to be models like they see on tv. Their mother ‘s want them to be models too. I’ve been a photographer for over 25 years and I would NEVER would want my daughter pursuing modeling if i had one.
Girls under 18 should not be modeling, full stop
honestly should be 21...
True
Children should not be exploited to an adult industry
That doesn't solve the problem. That's just more victim blaming. No one over the age of 18 would want to deal with that behaviour either.
Agencies and photographers should be held legally accountable for their actions and how they treat models.
Are parents not allowed on modeling sets like they are on film/tv sets?
Wow, I never would have known models go through things like this. I'm glad they shared these experiences for the young ladies who only see the glamorous side.
My dream is to become a fashion designer and when I achieve that dream, I will make sure that everyone who is working with me is safe and respected. I don’t care what happens but one thing I am sure of is that I will put humanity over everything else.

Me too girl. I want to be a fashion designer as well.
So ironic vogue is posting this video
honestly, the only way u can survive as a model is:
- u have strong protective parents around u especially if young (tyra banks mom)
- u have a strong family who is always with you and manager and support (gisele's sister)
- ur a strong badass knowing ur rights and not intimidated manipulated (naomi- nuff said)
otherwise it's horrible, because on one side agency pushing u to say yes yes yes everything, and the other side photographers exploiting u
I agree. Have them unionized too.
U forgot to add another point- An extreme cutthroat but being viewed as one of the coolest - Adriana Lima
@@nurbatrisyiabtkhairulanwar3808 adriana is so fun! and just extremely beautiful. She is very unique. I find supermodels in past were very unique distinctive features, now they all sort of look the same. I dont know maybe it's just me. Still very pretty but also not extraordinary.
Many models are quite smart (despite what stereotypes would lead you to believe)...and instead of them modeling maybe they could be using their other skills to do things like solve world hunger, medical research etc :)
Win, win!!
What kind of parent let's a 13 years old do that kind of photoshoot...shame on the parents and the photographer smh
For sure. But 13 y.o. models wouldn't exist if there wasn't a demand. Lots more people to blame.
I swear I was just thinking the same thing. The industry takes a toll on older models, how do you think a 13yo will respond? I would not let my kid do this- too many Harvey Weinsteins out there.
I don’t think they know about until afterwards
I don't think that any parents should trust any agency with their 13 years old child being in workplace like that.a 13 years old should be in school not in the industry.you can't justify it with anything unless you want them to be there.
my thought too....some parents don't care whether their children are abused or not so long as it leads to fame and money

Thas why Cindy Crawford wouldnt let her daughter get signed at a very young age
ERIKA DOWDY she was signed at 13...
I don't think that she was under the same risk as ordinary girls. Her mother is too famous and probably has too many influential friends in the industry as for people to take advantage of her in the same way. If she'd speak out, people would listen and take notice, that would be too risky for them. It's all about power dynamics
Sara Anna-Maria I would hope so, but even girls with famous parents can be at risk. Look at Gwyneth Paltrow.

And when did Anna Wintour become "inclusive"?
This is so sadly true. It happened to me or my roommates many times during my modeling career and then continued in my corporate life. Slamming Vogue for posting this is clearly shortsighted because of its reach and vulnerability. The power dynamics of intimidation and bullying is pervasive no matter what industry. And I applaud the models here for their courage to speak out.
