Plus every kid who grew up with the GBA are now in their twenties and all have jobs which also caused them to be more desired. Like why is Pokémon emerald $150????😭😭, Great vid btw

I found it really interesting that while the IPS screen had more vibrant colours the original AGS-101 screen's pixels have a weight to them, if that makes sense? The sprites looked chunkier and it definitely feels the most nostalgic.
It's amazing what a well lit screen does to add value to re-experiencing these games in their original form! I never had an SP of my own, but always loved the SP design and the added backlight!
I have an IPS V2 modded Gameboy Advanced SP with a AGS-001 motherboard. It has an upgraded 900 mAH battery from Retro Modding so I get a decent amount of gaming time. Definitely one of the higher quality reshells I've seen. Gonna be trying the Analogue Pocket out in a few days. Might be replacing the SP, but we'll see!
When I first modded my GBA with an IPS display and compared it with my AGS-101, I felt that something was off. The 101 screen just looked way better and "real" because of the original pixel grid and vibrant colors. Switched to the Funnyplaying ITA-kit now and couldn't be happier. For the Gameboy Color I absolutely love the Funnyplaying IPS-kit, though. It's just beautiful with artifical vertical scanlines activated.
@@senorbonbon the latest one from FP is nice. I got a few lemons though, so I recommend going through a shop like retromodding instead of directly through FP for better customer service. The hispeedido display is supposed to be pretty similar too but I haven't tried it myself.
Even though I'm ancient and crumbling in gamer years, I do enjoy the IPS screens. I'm old. I wanna fucking see what I'm playing. That being said I completely understand the desire for maintaining and preserving the original look. I own 2.5 AGS101's and I'm very grateful for them. I love playing on them. I say 2.5 because you can take a 101 screen and use it with a 001 motherboard if you solder in a resistor to one of the pins on the ribbon cable connector. Was a fun project.
Nice vid, especially the glue recomendation! I've never seen an AGS-101 in person before. Here in the UK, an original AGS-101 is slightly more than a pre-modded AGS-001 GBASP with a cheapo IPS screen. Side note, doing the upgrade yourself a quality Funny Playing or RetroSix screen has a many colour modes and pixel-grid options (as well as screen-blending), I'd love to see a side-by-side with one of those. I grew up with a GBC, so any kind of backlight makes me happy 😁

You can definetly see the bridge between a GBA and the DS Gameboys in the GBA SP. You can clearly see that from this one, things got a little bit more complicated from the hardware perspective. I also like to thinker around with gameboys but.... to be honest I am scared to touch the SP yet. :) But too many offer broken ones and I need to get used to fix these too. Thanks for the video, its really helping out to get an idea how to open these without breaking anything.
The DS line is so annoying to work on. I've had zif connectors just pop off and I didn't even touch the board 😭 The SP is definitely much hardier, good luck!
I have a modded AGS101 into an original GBA with a Boxy Pixel shell but the prices have gotten ridiculous. I accidentally damaged the ribbon for my AGS101 which costed me £50 around 5 years ago and i replaced it recently and that cost me £90. IPS/ITA is the way to go these days, AGS101 screens are becoming rare and expensive.
Yay just the mod I was interested in. Looks like a great project for a total novice too. Almost got a beat up 101 for 50 bucks but someone beat me to it :(

Just found my sp from childhood and happy to see that its a 101 model, shell is somewhat in worn condition but screen is in perfect condition. I plan on doing a full swap mod but leave almost everything intact. Just extracting the mobo into a new shell and screen.
oh man I am the same way, I don't think I'd like an IPS screen. The pearl green is also to dieee for. I also didn't realize how easy it is to swap things out? I figured since it was a clamshell it would be really difficult, like the DS or 3DS- i've heard/seen are really hard. But it's not as jam packed in there as I thought, my childhood gba sp shell broke in my bag as an adult and I was iffy on getting a replacement shell. Really should've just done research lol
I actually have my original GBA SP 001 model I got when I was a kid and I happen to have a 101 at home too! The 101 I think has a bad battery but my 001 still works as well as the day I got i! I've been wanting to get a better screen on my 001 model but was too intimidated to try it, but I think with your video I can do a screen swap! Gonna try that this weekend I think. Thanks for this! Nice job uncle. I’m a fan of the og Gba form factor and I do have a ags-101 but it’s in good condition so I don’t want to mess it up 😅. Don’t like the ips screens either, I love the chonky old pixels. I hope I ever find a working 101 screen with an useless body
You and I are in 1000 percent agreement about ips mods! They just look... Too good. Lol. It's just the nostalgia is a big part of playing Gameboy. For me, the Japan exclusive Gameboy Light is the best of the 90s series of gbs because it has the Gameboy pocket aesthetic, comfort and pixelated goodness with the convenience of the emerald green light. And for later models the GBA SP 001 is pretty much perfection 😍 Nothing beats it.

I recently installed an IPS screen and new shell for a 001. I have a stock 101. I compared both on max brightness and I have to say the IPS is much brighter and crisper.

Every now and then UA-cam will recommend a solid channel - glad I spotted ya 😀 I've been tinkering with my Miyoo Mini+ and it's funny how we try so hard to replicate the grid pattern/scanlines of the original display. I simply cannot emulate with those razor sharp "perfect" HD pixels 🤢 Subbing for more content!

But I was having a tough time trying to find it so instead I searched far and wide for a replacement. The prices for that version are ridiculous for something in decent shape. I settled for a 001 model in almost mint condition with very few scratches for $130. I realize that I can buy an LCD replacement but should I go that route or should I find a 101 screen instead?
Hello, my nerdphew! I think after watching comparison videos of the two screens, you'll have to ask yourself two questions: Do I strongly prefer one to the other? And which is more accessible? - If an IPS screen is more accessible, go for it! Ultimately what's important is playing your games. But if you are set on a 101, you can definitely find one for less than what you paid for your 001 and do a shell swap like in the video. I suggest looking on reddit on r/gamesale - Good luck and happy playing!

@@yourcoolunclemarisa They are so cheep in Japan... I wish to go there some day and come back with a bunch of crazy tech :D. Yeah, i know how it is. But in my experience, even if 5 or 3.3v logics short, it just get buggy. So don't warry about it. There is actually a good discipline with shorting those old PCBs called circuit banding or something like that.
I've never liked the 101 screeens. I remember being really excited about finally getting one, then I couldn't play it because the ghosting was soooo bad on it. I just couldn't do it!
first of all... i love this. instant-subscribe. second, don't a lot of the IPS upgrades have an option to add the pixels/ scan lines? i know the funnyplaying one i installed on my AGS-001 does. i wish i had a 101 to do a direct comparison to, but i feel like it still have some of the OG charm.
This video ate at my brain for months. Now I agree that you’re so right about the original screens. The lack of backlight on the GBC and AGS-001 provides such a nice break for my eyes. I’ve just joined your team. Go uncle!
I got a damaged 101 for 80 bucks, fix it up and it's all great except for the cartridge port it works But there's some missing plastic. Probably will never address that. And I have to change out the charging port as overtime it's gotten loose and it's not holding cables anymore.
Got to be careful with the aliexpress sellers who say they are selling AGS-101 screens, most of those are IPS screens in the same shell of the 101 screen. There are some videos out there of people taking those apart and exposing this, also the AGS-101 screens take up WAY less power than any aftermarket screen which is good for battery life.
I don't have much of an opinion on it honestly? 😅 I think if it makes you happy and you end up winning the IPS lottery, that's awesome. But I think it seems over the top when folks keep buying them in hopes of opening the lid to find an IPS screen.
man im playing on an ags 001 and i just dont like the feeling i get in my gut when i think about modding it. I cant decide if i should get an AGS 001 again and mod it while keeping the stock one stock. OR just get an AGS 101 and do no modding at all
If you can get a 101 for a good price, that should ease your gut :0) And if you can get a 001 for very cheap, modding it should be straightforward and a bit less risky than if you overpaid ;)
@@yourcoolunclemarisa Update! i ended up finding a 101 for a good price at my local retro store estarland! the difference is SO incredible! Played through half of FFV on 001 and half on the 101 and its just night and day. Ended up trading my 001 and a copy of Shin megami tensai strange journey for it and well worth it haha
IPS sucks for me, Pixel Grid is king But I am also very specific on gameboy screens :D IMO the best screen mod (only mod, pocket is best for me) is the laminated ITA screen, has the pixel grid and better brightness and colors as AGS101 Can't get better then the analog pocket :)
Actually wrote this before watching and I really like that you just said it in the beginning about ITA/TFT screens haha Very cool! Do you have a analog pocket or heard of it? Also I got my AGS101 for 80something because I told the seller its an 101 and its worth more, he did not know and because he was thankful for that he made me a very fair deal imo :) You could also love the green Gameboy Micro I guess.. :D

@@yourcoolunclemarisa Also, you use a lot of captontape :P. I am an electronic by trade (but getting my money as a programmer). Anyway, we never used that much. Normally just if two things are very close together so they don't short. You do you ofc. Just an input :D.

@@yourcoolunclemarisa They are so cheep in Japan... I wish to go there some day and come back with a bunch of crazy tech :D. Yeah, i know how it is. But in my experience, even if 5 or 3.3v logics short, it just get buggy. So don't warry about it. There is actually a good discipline with shorting those old PCBs called circuit banding or something like that.
Don’t some IPS screens have options for scan lines so it looks identical to the og screens? I swear I’ve seen it

I've never liked the 101 screeens. I remember being really excited about finally getting one, then I couldn't play it because the ghosting was soooo bad on it. I just couldn't do it!
I am blissfully unaware of it, but I totally get that - especially once you have an eye for something you can't unsee it :(
first of all... i love this. instant-subscribe. second, don't a lot of the IPS upgrades have an option to add the pixels/ scan lines? i know the funnyplaying one i installed on my AGS-001 does. i wish i had a 101 to do a direct comparison to, but i feel like it still have some of the OG charm.

This video ate at my brain for months. Now I agree that you’re so right about the original screens. The lack of backlight on the GBC and AGS-001 provides such a nice break for my eyes. I’ve just joined your team. Go uncle!
Hahah well I'm glad you're on my team but you may be on the wrong team because I like the AGS-101 the best, not the 001 ^^;;
I got a damaged 101 for 80 bucks, fix it up and it's all great except for the cartridge port it works But there's some missing plastic. Probably will never address that. And I have to change out the charging port as overtime it's gotten loose and it's not holding cables anymore.

Got to be careful with the aliexpress sellers who say they are selling AGS-101 screens, most of those are IPS screens in the same shell of the 101 screen. There are some videos out there of people taking those apart and exposing this, also the AGS-101 screens take up WAY less power than any aftermarket screen which is good for battery life.
Absolutely. I was surprised that's still happening tbh, given the availability of IPS screens but scammers gotta scam 🤷

I don't have much of an opinion on it honestly? 😅 I think if it makes you happy and you end up winning the IPS lottery, that's awesome. But I think it seems over the top when folks keep buying them in hopes of opening the lid to find an IPS screen.
Does the battery last longer with the ITA display than with an IPS?
I believe so, yes!
I prefer older ags screens - they have that pixel pattern that you can't replicate

man im playing on an ags 001 and i just dont like the feeling i get in my gut when i think about modding it. I cant decide if i should get an AGS 001 again and mod it while keeping the stock one stock. OR just get an AGS 101 and do no modding at all
If you can get a 101 for a good price, that should ease your gut :0) And if you can get a 001 for very cheap, modding it should be straightforward and a bit less risky than if you overpaid ;)
@@yourcoolunclemarisa Update! i ended up finding a 101 for a good price at my local retro store estarland! the difference is SO incredible! Played through half of FFV on 001 and half on the 101 and its just night and day. Ended up trading my 001 and a copy of Shin megami tensai strange journey for it and well worth it haha

But I am also very specific on gameboy screens :D
IMO the best screen mod (only mod, pocket is best for me) is the laminated ITA screen, has the pixel grid and better brightness and colors as AGS101
Can't get better then the analog pocket :)
