Same here... I had black skirts with my 9 inch pleco in a community tank of neons, rosy's,Xrays, rasboras and two khuli loaches.. Just to have them be nipped up and attacked to the point I had to put them in a tank by themselves.. I got the skirts because I wanted some bigger fish to match prince tricky's size, without a aggressive nature. And in turn they became a battering toy for my Rasboras.. And since removed the Rassies and the Skirts to stop further conflicting interactions. But into tanks of mixed rasbora and mixed breed skirts. giving me two awesome 30 gallons with a variety of personalities. But without the hassle of community conflict.
But it still left me with a huge tank in my room that I had plans to make asiatic and communal..I have since gone and adopted two clown loaches, a angel loach and a tiger loach. Of whom pack not only great speed, but some feisty personalities. And So far their getting along great as my pleco's cleanup crew. And are peaceful with the other tank mates who of late I replaced the Rasboras with Green Barbs. And the skirts with Celebes Rainbowfish. Both of whom have some aggression but only in their own schools. So the tank is finally where I want it. And while having a clown loach as a kid was the best thing in the world. I never thought myself able..
The harsh interaction with the skirts lead me back to a fish I wanted as a child. And really reinstalled my love for big loaches. All mine are babies mind you. But with the purpose of them growing up in my care, to be the best they can be inside and out.
Go get your rays man, a heater explosion is hard to take. But thats behind you, and since then things have been great. You've learned and moved on.

OK, I'm not a fish guy, yet I watched this entire video clip. Why? Because it was interesting and very well done. After just a few seconds, I got the sense that I might actually learn a few new things if I hung around and watched, so I did. I learned a lot about a topic that eleven minutes earlier, I'd had no interest in whatsoever. Now eleven minutes later, after watching the whole clip, I'm a bit smarter, and a lot more interested. I had no idea fish had different personalities. I thought they were just fish, you know, just following their instincts to swim, eat and reproduce. I figured fish tanks were sort of like paintings you hang on a wall and just enjoy them because they look cool. But watching this clip, it appears as though fish definitely do have different personalities, and I get the sense that fish can be just as fulfilling and rewarding as a pet dog or cat. Their behavior is so much more complex and interesting than I first imagined, and tank ownership seems to be as rewarding and challenging as any other hobby or interest. So thanks!

kdmellor You can actually pet some fish! My blood red parrot cichlids will come up your hand if you put your hand in the tank. There are videos on UA-cam of people massaging their parrot cichlids! Mine love to rearrange their decorations and rocks. I have this rock display that I like to put up like a bridge and they always knock it down to hide behind instead 😂

Well if you enjoyed Game of Thrones you should defiantly consider getting your own (large) tank of African Cichlids because they do that - but as fish!
Yeah their behavior is far more complex than people realise - Australian Marine biologist Callum Brown has recently discovered examples fish using tools to hunt.

That is the most beautiful arowana that I have ever seen (the red hooks were very pretty too, especially the freckled ones, but that arowana is just gorgeous). Even before you said that he was 'visibly happier' after the red hooks were gone, I could really see it. I enjoyed seeing him rub against the bubbles. Seeing happy fish make me happy. Thank you for making this video!

The ending of this video made my eyes swell up with tears. Thank you for sharing your struggles as well as all the great achievements you've made in this hobby. I keep 10 aquariums of my own at home, all managed and DIY/aquascaped by myself. I don't have any friends who "understand" the work that is put into it, and watching your videos as well as other channels gives me that sense of validation I need to not feel so alone in doing what I love. Don''t get me wrong, seeing my fish happy will always be my goal. It's just really encouraging to see what you do and how openly you share your emotional journey with the fish you keep.

maybe you had too many red hooks & since they highly outnumbered him they felt obligated to gang up on him since he was such a jerk in the beginning. or may because they were in the tank 1st they were territorial and felt like he disrespected their space ? or mayyybeeee a combination of both ? perhaps half that number of red hooks introduced into his tank (after being isolated & decontaminated) would work

Poor little Arowana, I'm glad he got his tank back and is happy. Don't feel too bad because we all make mistakes. Mine was putting a betta fish named Thanatos in a community tank with guppies. Many friends have done this no trouble but Thanatos killed all my fancy guppies overnight. I guess we all get that one fish(or group) that's a butthole.

I use only plant gravel, plants and seashells (for calcium for my shelled critters and pH leveling the natural way) for decoration and smaller fish and critters to hide in! 😀 I am always happy to see healthy fish in others tanks as well.

Tanked With Aussie Koi can handle a lot of temperature ranges, but this tank is no where near big enough. Koi need at least a 4' deep 'tank' or pond to work their muscles by swimming up and down. It is also recommended to not house them in anything less than 2000g.

    • @aussiejjdude3066

I'm surprised that people in North America don't know how popular to keep koi fish in a fish tank in Japan. Although you need a very good filter system and right amount of food.

I've had an arowana , African lung fish , jaguar cichlid , velvet cichlid , wide mouth catfish , red tail catfish , tyre track eel. they have all passed away over the years . the only fish I have left is an upside down catfish that is now 20 years old , he lives alone in a 450 gallon tank. I've never replaced the ones that died and he's the last survivor ...

    • @TheKamiBunny

I have one of those i call rocky. He's about 25 years old now. I can't tell if he's alive as he never swims but if you take him out his fin comes right up and he gulps air. So he's alive that's really the only way i can tell if he's alive.
Hes talking about something like a Common Pleco. An algae eater. Some people call them the upside down cat fish as they can sticl and swim to stuff upside down.

By the time the pair I had had little babies, the Saratoga was chill enough to leave the tiny things alone, and I made a few bucks off of selling them to aquariums and fish specialists when they were big enough.
My set up had pebbles, plant life and logs in it from day one when the Saratoga was quite small though, so I don't think introducing something that has already hurt your fish would help

Easier to clean, plus fish don't necessarily *need* décor or substrate, it's usually more for aesthetics. But the main reason is that it's simple to maintain and gives bad bacteria less places to develop.

I was also happy to hear that you might get into rays again. The pic of them at the end was like a flash at the end of a movie trailer.
Also, at around 0:24, you showed your other tank now with a bunch of large goldfish. I know you do mostly diy stuff but I'd sure love to see a 30 minute video of them just swimming around. You know, just set up a video camera to record for 30 minutes then upload it.
If you put up a vid like that, I'd never get any work done on my laptop anymore :-)

  • @Firegarden999
    @Firegarden999 Рік тому

I think your mistake was to add the red hooks first. You should priorize the Aruwana, add him first, aclimatize, make him eat first voraciously and then add one red hook at a time. Also, change the food for bigger chunks of fish or something so the Aruwana would eat as soon it drops to the water and the red hooks would eat the remains.
Or I wouldn’t take longer to let the Aruwana suffer so long and had fried the red hooks in the first week😂

I'm fairly new to the world of aquariums An have plenty to learn.. so forgive me if this question is ridiculous/ foolish.. I have a 6 foot tank / paludarium.. still deciding what to put in there.. I have a feather fin Catfish an a large Gibbicep Catfish (my more experienced mate categorises as Scum fish).. I was thinking about putting the Arowana in there with them... oh and on top of that.. I'd have Boyds forest dragons in the trees above it.
Sooo, how many bad ideas have I had in there.
So far the arowana is the only thing not fully planned..

I think a small group of Redfin tinfoil barbs would be a better alternative. They are the same color as the red hooks, can be bought at a big size, cheap, non aggressive, extremely active and fast, and overall, an awesome community fish that loves to eat all kinds of food.
