- I was supposed to MOT the £175 Volvo 740 before lock down, but obviously couldnt and MOTs were extended but I want to know the car is safe so Im risking putting it in for a test...what haven't I found wrong with it yet...

Ha, love the quip about testing your eyesight. Funnily enough, I went to test my eyesight the other day too. It was marvelous. The sun was shining, the car was running well, and the Oxfordshire Cotswolds were at their absolute beautiful best. I drove the 60 miles, stopped off to walk along a river, and joy of joys, my eyes were fine. I'm a firm believer in regular check ups, so if the weather's nice again tomorrow, I think I will go and test my eyesight again. Cheers Dominic 👍

Wahay, well done Matt and the Volvo. For a car of its age and mileage it looks incredible. Love how even the clock ticks in a robust fashion.
Matt - for heavy cleaning: G101. I bought 5L of it online at a very decent price. It's used by professional detailers (see Autoshine Cars here on the YT for a good example), and I now swear by it. dilute as required, apply with a brush, scrub and wipe down. That stuff works wonders, and has no residual odour. For those tight spots, borrow a steam cleaner, or get one of the £15 lidl units, they are good enough for car interiors and boot surrounds.
I remember using that stuff when I worked at a van hire company, it was pretty horrible when the spray blew in your face but it sure did a good job of getting stubborn dirt off. I can't remember if we ever diluted it like you're apparently supposed to so it was strong. We called it Yellow Peril haha
We used it on the coaches, smells awful, works like a dream!
I had one of these new in 1988, in Australia. I can confirm these can go places modern non SUV vehicles just cannot. Glad you discovered the tea shelf!
This Volvo is great and reminds me of my Mum’s 740 GLT of same era 89 / 90 on a G reg. love the fact that is such a no nonsense robust but comfortable and safe car as you have experienced. Also ....I would swear I could hear the clock tick away when you showed the interior footage post cleaning! ....class! Keep up the great work with the channel and please don’t seek the Volvo :-(
Excellent news that your Silver Smorgasbord has passed its MOT. You prepared it well and obviously the emissions were within limits.
Good to see something saved that people would have used for a scrappage discount so they drive a faceless character bypassed blob of plastic.

Love this car Matt 🚗🇸🇪😍 I remember when it was launched and admiring the way it ‘squarely’ showed two fingers to the emerging jelly mould designs coming out from Audi, Ford etc etc at that time 😂
Well done Matt.... shes a keeper! when you go to the scrappy, pick up a spare coil and ignition amplifier, they can give trouble sometimes. Be careful sorting the heated seats out, if you get a high resistance point it may cause an issue of overheating. If my memory serves the seat heaters only come on below +14c, so i don't think they will work in the Uk summer. T-cut, Duraglit or farecla G3 will bring the rear light clusters back to health. To bring the bumpers and trim back to life, use boot polish or peanut butter. Good luck!
P.S. Check the crank case oil breather / separator filter on the nearside of the engine. Its a thick white disc with breather holes at the bottom of the oil breather pipe. If Volvo cant supply anymore, clean or throw it out.
There are a few bits that far on these, but the old owner said it didnt work and I tried both together, only the drivers one worked!
The PCV system does not use a normal valve. It has an oil separator and flame trap. The need renewing once in a while. The flame trap is a bit of a bear to reach, but not impossible.
It was 27 degrees today in Chester lol. Great work Matt! Love this car and I am not surprised it passed - you did a lot to fix 30 years of neglect. They are such honest and loveable cars.
That security ‘mushroom’ is indeed a pain but stop the seat submarining in a crash yay.

I've been following this project since the start and I feel just as happy as you with the issue of a new MOT. Well done. Great job. I'd love to see a good internal/external detailing on this Volvo because it deserves one.

Out of all the cars you have the Volvo is definitely my favourite. Followed by the Rover. The inside has come up a treat and I like the colour combo 👍🏾 She should last for many more years now 🙂
Congrats on getting the old girl through the MOT. Its a credit to all the hard work you put in & now it's clean it looks amazing. Somehow the "A dog is not just for Christmas" sticker belongs in an old Volvo & you should put it back.
Great video, Matt. There is something about these old Volvos. They are simply fun to drive. My 90 240 Estate is bone stock except for tires and dampers. Bring an Estate, it specified the now impossible to find 185R14. Even Volvo gave up on them and switched to a 195/75R14. For years we have run 205/70R14. Made a big difference. Next set will be 205/65R15 on a set of Virgo rims. That should do the trick. Eventually I will treat Arthur to new springs, but at almost 400,000 miles, he still sits just right, in spite of having been used as a 1 ton lorry more often than he should have.
Don't waste time on the original stereo. Clarion was never all that good, and 30 years have done no favours. There is an external amp, and it is likely dead, too. That is on my list of things to do. Even new it was better at making noise than producing sound you wanted to listen to.

Glad to see someone else sweating buckets this week, been putting my interior back in the front of my volvo 240, after a knackered heater valve soaked everything. Can't beat the smell of old musty volvo carpet on a hot day. Keep up the good work.
So good it passed the MOT and all your hard work paid off. It's looking better all the time. As for the heat, don't ever visit Australia in summer. It's hideous. There are days where I simply refuse to leave the aircon and go outside! Cheers.

Nice job! That hard work definitely paid off. Now you've made it solid I reckon it'll be pretty trouble free. Bilstein B4 and appropriate 40mm lowering springs work very nicely on these, make them feel a lot less boaty and they're still not *that* low.
Love what your doing to the old Volvo... you should do a video on how to cover up dashboard cracks!?

I remember when working at a MoT garage years ago, whenever we saw patches of fresh underseal, the little hammer / pokey stick and a magnet came out. Sometimes the underseal was hiding holes covered with duct tape, body filler and scrunched newspaper also featured.

You can restore the taillights with your dual action polisher. I've restored many taillights this way. Don't use a heavy cut, start with medium and finish with the lightest cut. No need for other ones, as long as they are not cracked.
Imagine the satisfaction he will get doing that. I serviced my Kia and it drove exactly the same... no satisfaction there.
I was going to but they are crazed in and cracked in the plastic, and one has a big chunk missing by the number plate!
I used to lust after the 740 when I was younger. Never had a Volvo in my hundreds of cars until about 2 months ago when I bought my first; a 98 V70 2.3 T5 manual (241hp) in Pearl Green which I purchased from the second owner.
It’s on 263k from new with full Volvo main dealer history until 242k. Honestly, inside/outside and underneath the car looks like 50k and I have fooled many people whos jaws drop when I tell them the mileage!
Absolutely fantastic car which I love to bits; I’m currently refurbishing everything I can get my hands on with new including a full suspension rebuild on Monday (dampers/mounts/wishbones/drop links/dust boots/tie rods/track rods/eibachs).

I've been investigating rust protection for my Renault Grand Scénic when I (eventually) get it back on the road. Apparently, Rustbuster Epoxy Mastic 121 is one of the best. I've also heard good things about Bilt Hamber's products.

You could also, as i guess you intend on not having backseat passengers, buy a hose that is flexible enough and modify the seat to have hot/cold air blowing through the seat aswell as being heated on demand, as cooled seats are the best at summer, and these being fabric seats can conduct air through them so yeah... A project worth undertaking, especially if you consider that this car has the prerequisites for it literally on hand and not enclosed in some shroud like the central console or through the door sills... I mean, cooled seats in a volvo that you fixed up for yourself, what more need i say... And you could always leave the passenger seat the way it is, so there is some ventilation directed towards the backseats for that one time you will have rear passengers...
Volvo seven series, car for life and built like a house, buy one now and when you’re done with it the kids can drive it and it’ll still go on and on. Volvo cars built today are not as well made.
Hi Matt,boom it's passed !!!!!,the interior looks alot fresher and tidy,I would have a brush for inside the car, for the dashboard.for the money you paid it's a nice car.
Poor mans joint channel, around switches, buttons and textured surface cleaner tool is a toothbrush to work in the cleaning spray. Cloudy lights can be temporarily refreshed by rubbing down with a 600 grade wet and dry. then cutting compound, wiping off and giving a coat of clear body laquer, , Usually lasts a few months before starting to fade again. The Volvo is coming together really well. There used to be plenty of different alloys to fit but the 15 inch 240GLT spoke will always be my favourite. I have kept a set for when i find a car to put them on.
The cracks on the dashboard is in every 740, it comes from winter as the dash is cold and the heater starts to blast warm nearly instantly when you turn the car on.

If you want some really good under body seal, try "silverhook underseal" its brilliant stuff, none of the clogging problems and spray issues of bigger brands
it's does vary in quality but really it's time people stopped using old school underseal and move to epoxy. Epoxy doesn't lift and trap water like underseal.
For rust treatment and to cover where I've welded I use something called vactan. It's a rust converter and primer that was originally developed for boats but works really well on the underside and inside of cars. It kept my x1/9 alive for a lot longer than it should have. And it brushes . I use that then stone chip and it lasts for ages
If it works on a Fiat X1/9 it should be OK for boats!

The other thing is them faded knobs. If you warm them up with a heat gun it should bring the oils forward and make them look shiny like we do with bumpers to make them black again
I just went throught a safety check for my 1990 740 A couple days ago. I know that anxious feel about getting it inspected. Fortunely it is only once. I needed a left rear brake, caliper was seized. i didn't know that a drove it 250km. fortunely it seized in the off position. Repaired the horn, the bracket was so rusted that it fell off as so as I toughed it. Fortunely i bought a 760 that i didn't safety because part a horrible to find here in Canada. It did make a great parts car though.

Light for armrest console: remove console very carefully, plastic likes to crack. Theres also lights for the seat belt buttons. Volvo PN 989800 for bulbs
FYI; detail brushes. They definitely come in handy when detailing all of your current fleet! As well as steamer!

Did sound like a grandfather clock ticking away in there; which probably wouldn’t look too far out of place in a big old Volvo.
Good preparation for mot , well done with pass , always satisfying on bargain basement motors , feel sorry for image conscious buyers of modern cars emission control regs are one of main mot failures and the repairs cost mega bucks , just off for a drive in my £200 car suitably attired with sandles , string vest , cut down jeans , £10 sunglasses , definitely low key image .

Always found it weird that Volvo's
always had a massive clock in the instrument binnacle, with a smaller rev counter when it should've been the other way around. The 240 had this tiny rev counter and a massive clock in it, which looked even more weird. Despite this, still think the 7 series and 240 are cooler than a polar bear's jockstrap. Good work keeping it on the road, man.
Im going to say its because its not a car where you worry about the revs or performance but do want to be on time as its rude to be late (or you dont want to miss The Archers on radio 4!)

It Happens that way occasionally. Buy a car for almost nothing, and come to see it is far better than it seemed. A considerable amount of sweat equity, and you are close to owning a restored example of a classic. You should take it through a car wash for a future video, since the exterior looks very dirty. Also, nice job on the interior! It looks so much better!
Those faded knobs! (😆) Use a heat gun to GENTLY warm them up, it will bring the oils in the plastic to the surface and bring the colour back. I've done faded van bumpers and my cars exterior black trim and the difference is brilliant.
And I feel the pain of today's sun. 7 weeks of gardening, not a thing, 1 day of painting the house and I look like a lobster

I feel sorry for you blokes in the UK. Mate in my neck of the woods - Queensland Australia, your car merely requires a one-off safety certificate. So long as you maintain your yearly registration you don’t have to do anything else. Just drive the bloody thing. I know blokes who have cars sitting in paddocks rusting away that are still registered as they don’t want to part with the older style number plates!!!

In Australia we get the chassis sprayed with fish oil. You smell like a cod for awhile but it works a treat.
the radios in volvos of this era while sounding really good suffer terribly of bad solder joints they are fixable and work rather well but fixing them is kind of a pain.
Even brand new the Clarion stereos are better noise generators than radios. The external amps are even worse. Don't even get me started on the quality of the speakers. They are the one part Volvo did not buy quality for OEM.
For nooks and crannies I always used my exes toothbrush. And a damp chamois is very useful all around the interior. Use that on my 200t. Well done mate.

My friends had these volvos back in the day they would lower them 2-4 inches and fit Gaz dampers if they were being very extravagant. They would also put boy racer turbos on them at 1,5 bars +. I personally think it can stand about 2 inches lowering and probably some poly bushings to make it a little less wallowy. Maybe bigger sway bars aswell. 16" wheels off a V70 if that's your thing.
I was thinking a small drop would look good and most wouldn't even notice! Ive found sway bars so that would be an easy upgrade too
@@furiousdriving Yeah a small drop is better they look kind of like a sofa on casters when they are lowered too much and also they tend to rub alot.
Be prepared. Using any of the front wheel drive rims means spacers. The late 940 Turbo wheels fit without, and they were available in a 16 inch size
In my 740 the radio had a separate power amplifier under the RH side of the dash. Sadly this radio completely failed and was replaced by one from a car accessory shop. The now redundant power amplifier had to be left in situ but disconnected.

Be careful with brake cleaner on the interior! It often contains acetone, which dissolves ABS plastic among other things.

It kills me to think, how many cars get scrapped all because they need a good clean.
It would be worth you looking at ebay for underseal (shutz) I bought 3 litres of tetrosyl tetrasutz and an applicator gun for less than £30 and that was just enough to do the entire underneath of my peugeot 106. Its far better than rattle cans but you do need an air compressor if you otherwise havent got one and the finish is very professional.
I used those cans on the Tomcat, but wanted to try this Comma one as Id heard good things about it
I fixed a cigarette burn on my sons Renault 21 seat by "darning" it with the same coloured wool nicked from the wife's sewing box. I remembered my mum fixed holes in socks the same way. The repair's pretty much invisible unless you know it's there
Might be worth trying to polish the rear lights with some decent compound. Probably never been done before so should come up pretty nice.
They would come up well but have a lot of crazing going on sadly
