She truly is one of the most under appreciated singers - saw her live about 10 years ago she was outstanding. Check out her live performance of The Who’s ‘Love Reign’ a truly brilliant performance.
Mike Franzgrote In fact Bettye came back to light and on stages early 2000 ! I got the chance to see her Live in Paris when she released the sublime album I've Got My Own Hell To Raise and I had bought the album Souvenirs ( French edition ) about a year before and had been mesmerized by that recording :-D Since then I try not to miss her shows :-D Regards from London
Dear Bettye, We caught your show in the Factory just a few days ago 5/4 and have never heard such intesity from anyone and we have seen so many great artists over the 50 years that you have been performing no one not even Stevie Wonder, Ike and Tina, Muddy Waters ,the Band, Taj Mahal , the Wailers , Lee Perry etc etc caused me to cry but you. We love you and hope you make a fortune from your artistry. Sincerely your ,Ilkka and Marjut Tarjavaara
saw Bettye LaVette perform this in San diego at Anthology a couple weeks ago.... she was brilliant!!! Pure fire and passion. She did a book signing after of her new book "A Woman Like Me" (which I highly recommend) She was one of the sweetest people I have ever met..... if you haven't seen her yet, you gotta experience it once in your life....
I can't even begin to comment on how great Bettye LaVette's music and voice sounds. So many wonderful adjectives to describe her greatness. I could listen to her all day every day. Real music!!!!!
Letting go completely while still keeping it totally together; real soul. If anything, Bettye lets go even more severely live, yet still, never a miss-step. She's the one.
its 2024, and i cant believe that i have just discovred this lady, i love her singing.. i think she came to tucson,az a few years ago,but i paid no mind...now i listen to her , time after time...unique voicals.... she hits you right in the center..
Belfast Festival's Music club kicked-off last night -20/10/14- with a stunning performance from Bettye LaVette and her band. This "elfin" woman on the wrong side of 60, wowed the Belfast audience as she strutted and sashayed and belted out many of her favourite songs spanning 50 years of touring. Bettye would be unknown to many as her music career peaked in the 60's with her best known track "Let me down easy" Despite being up there with Aretha and Tina her record producers never fully supported her and as she herself jokingly remarks "it has taken me 50 years to be an overnight sensation..." and sensation it was. My favourite performance was when Miss LaVette begged a senior moment, sat down on stage, took off her Jimmy Choo's and legs crossed delivered a beautiful powerful soul ballad, "Souvenirs" Bettye- I thank-you, Belfast thanks-you...long may you continue to sing and get the recognition you rightfully so deserve...
All, I can say is wow, what a great version of this song it almost not recognizeable from it original. Bravo! I was not aware of this artist and Ashley Said So did a video cover her as a subject and it got me curious to hear some of her music. It excellent that she is findiing her second wind, wishing her much success.
Its amazing how artists like Bettye LaVette and Jimmy Scott can rephrase a work and, by emphasizing certain lyrics over others, change even the son'g's meaning.
Your "Crazy "Good Bettye... You've helped to embrace that fine line between sanity and Insanity... "There was something so pleasant about that place... even your emotions have an echo in so much space ..... but it wasn't because I didn't know enough.. I just knew too much...." Beautifully done Bettye LaVette xo
Yes, Ma'm. *Love* that growllll and slide. Emotion translating directly into sound. Mr. Green just got a beat down, but it was beat down from a Queen, so that should help ease his pain.
"Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley was largely based on "Last Man Satnding" by Gian Piero and Gianfranco Reverberi. Unlike the original song (I - III - VI - V), the chord progression here is: I - VII - IV - V. This diverts from the original composition in the 2nd and 3rd chord. 3rd chord: IV (minor) instead of VI (major), is an easy and more accurate substitution as the two chords are relevant. The III to VII, however, gives a total change to the 2nd chord of the song, which makes it less appealing to me. Very soulful arrangement though.
I can't believe I've lived through 60+ years of music and never heard her. Better late than never.
better late than never Bent
I'm in kind of the same boat, also I never discovered Ray Charles till about 4 years ago. The last album was amazing.
I have been following jazz, blues, rock and pop since 1967, and I first encountered her name today.
hahaha yeas that is exactly what I thought too, funny
She truly is one of the most under appreciated singers - saw her live about 10 years ago she was outstanding. Check out her live performance of The Who’s ‘Love Reign’ a truly brilliant performance.
This is absolutely CRAZY. This is the best version of Crazy I have ever heard.
Bettye is simply the best singer alive on this planet.
I love her voice. So hauntingly powerful
Bettye's rendition of "Most of the Time" is priceless. Can't get it out of my head.
Glad to meet you Bettye LaVette. I am now a big fan of your soulful voice..... thank you
Oh my...Bettye, you have found my soul...where oh where have you been all these years? Music that stirs the soul...thank You
