I was trying to explain why I was pro choice to my mother who's conventionally religious, and I said something similar. I respect that she would never make the choice to get an abortion, good for her! But by voting for someone who wants to supress woman's reproductive rights, you're voting to take away millions of other peoples choice. If I got pregnant unwillingly in some awful turn of events, I would want a choice as a young female presenting person. She would have wanted a choice when she was a young woman. So many people dont have a choice, so it's up to us to give them the voice they deserve.

My family and I were undocumented for 14 years, and it was tough to be politically knowledgeable but unable to participate in decisions that would affect my family. I became a citizen last year, and this is the first election I get to vote in(I already cast my mail-in-ballot), and regardless of the outcome I feel relieved that I at least did my part. Things have never seemed darker in the US in my lifetime (24 years old), and if we don't vote we only have ourselves to blame if things get any worse. Votes have power, that's why the opposition spends so much time trying to prevent you from exercising that power.

Not American, but overall, the reason why I vote is because in many ways I have so many privileges and my life is good. I would like other people to have as good of a life as I do - if not better. Their happiness takes nothing away from me, but actually makes the world a better place, for all of us.

I have some points about why you should vote:
    1. For all the white people that were asking what they can do to help the BLM movement, the cis/het people asking how to be a better ally during LGBTQIA+ pride, the men asking how to advocate for women's rights, the parents scared about the world they have brought their kids into - What you can do is V O T E. Your vote is the *easiest* way to communicate what you want, who you support and what your priorities are. If you don't vote, you're actively throwing away your best and most accessible chance to speak up for what you care about the most.
    2. If you feel like your vote doesn't matter, ask yourself who benefits the most from you not voting. Do their ideals align with your own? The ONLY time your vote has no impact is when you don't use it, so who made you feel like it was better to have no voice? Who made you feel like your voice was unimportant? If you want to prove them wrong (even if that person was you) all you need to do is vote.
    3. Do you truly love the way things are right now? Do you want everything to stay exactly how it is right now forever? Is there nothing at all you would change if you could? Better healthcare, better access to education, better pandemic measures, better public transport, better roads? By not casting a vote, you are voting for everything to stay just as it is.
    4. The world isn't going to change if people refuse to use the tools that they have to facilitate that change. They aren't the best tools, this is true, so we need to use the options and tools we have now to make better options and tools for the future. The lightbulb was invented by candlelight. Solar panels and wind farms were likely invented whilst using harmful sources of energy. Use your current vote to help create a world where nobody is made to think their future vote is unimportant.

Voting is SO important -- thank you for making this video!! I vote because the people in office, whether it be at a local or federal level, have an impact on my life and future, as well as the lives and futures of literally everyone! Even if the candidates may not fully align with my views (most of the time, they don't), I'd rather use my power to vote to elect someone who will make some positive changes to support their constituents, instead of not using my vote and allowing an unknown person to be in charge of making key decisions for my community. Some progress is more than no progress at all!
Thinking about the idea of "my one vote won't have an impact" has always been frustrating to me because I've always thought about the mass number of people who think that then having a huge impact on who gets elected. But seeing some representatives be decided by a singular vote -- honestly pretty scary, but all the more reason to see the impact that your vote can have!

What people in other countries don't realize, is our President is elected by the Electoral College, meaning each state is assigned a certain number of "votes". There are a total of 538 electoral votes, and the number of votes each state receives is proportional to its size --- the bigger the state's population the more "votes" it gets. The formula for determining the number of votes for each state is simple: each state gets two votes for its two US Senators, and then one more additional vote for each member it has in the House of Representatives. For California, this means it get 55 votes (2 senators and 53 members of the House of Representatives) --- the most of any state. To say your vote doesn't matter is absolutely ridiculous when it can be the deciding factor between whether your state goes blue or red. For instance for the first time in DECADES my own state Arizona is a battleground state when for YEARS it was strictly red. People are waking up, and want change. What that change is...we'll have to wait and see. We dream in the dark for the most part.

    • @the1bigooof
      @the1bigooof 4 роки тому +4

The point of the electoral college is the exact reason our vote doesn’t matter. There is no transparency on who the representative really votes for. They are supposed to vote for who we want but we don’t know 100% that they are really doing that. The popular vote doesn’t really matter, and the examples he is talking about is different from presidential. Locally your vote for sure is taken into account but the vote for the president doesn’t matter at all, congress will put whoever they want into office we have no say. The founding fathers created the electoral college for a reason. We just have no proof our representatives actually listen to us, and considering how the us government works they wouldn’t care what we think either way

In my country it's mandatory to vote, if you're in between 18-65 years old. I used to think that was stupid, but then I realized that if it's mandatory, it's also mandatory to be accessible for everyone in the country. In that way, every single community has access to the debates and to actual voting, making sure all communities are heard. It has its flaws, as all voting systems do, but at least we know that whatever stupid decision the country makes, we at least tried. And for those thinking that it's against your rights to make a choice or whatever, you can vote blank or null your vote, it's not mandatory to chose someone to vote on. But since you are already doing it, why not researching who will be doing the best for you and your loved ones, and give it a try?

Some reasons to vote (from my mindset):
    1. I am a woman, LGBTQ+, and someone with a pre-existing health condition. All three of these aspects of my being are at stake. As we speak, Republican Congress is trying to shove through Amy Coney Barrett for the supreme court, an extremely dangerous nominee who doesn't believe in a woman's right to choose, doesn't believe in rights for LGBTQ+ individuals, and has unquestioningly and immorally supported the erratic claims of the President. This is only one situation but it is influenced by the President, the Senate, and the HOR, all people we have the power to vote for/against. Furthermore, as a Supreme Court role is for life, this single decision will affect everyone not only now, but for decades and generations to come.
    2. Our system is inherently racist; within policing we disproportionately arrest and murder BIPOC. Within criminal justice, we are *seven* times more likely to wrongfully commit Black people for murder than White people. I could keep going with this in resource availability, redlining, mistreatment of Black people in health care, and other examples, but the point is, our country and our system does not value Black lives.
We have one candidate who has only furthered the normalization of this, encouraging White supremacists to "stand by" and calling them "good people" while we have another candidate who has unequivocally denounced White supremacy and aims to address it if they are elected. We must vote the current administration out so that we can begin to address these issues and change them.
    3. Climate change is a dire threat to the entire world, but has become increasingly dangerous on the West coast with fires, the South/Midwest with tornados, and the East/Southeast with hurricanes. These natural disasters are growing in their intensity as we continue to pollute, waste, and support corporations who do not follow environmental guidelines for emissions regulations and natural resource protection. Not only has the current administration refused to acknowledge that climate change is both real and a threat, they have removed scientists from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and replaced them with more lapdogs to the President who are loosening restrictions on emissions regulations and removing protections on natural areas and national parks to allow for destruction of land for resource extraction.
Again, the current administration is doing all of this knowingly; we need to vote out the President and his sympathizers who are going along with this destruction and vote in a President who will listen to scientists and appoint the experts to address this threat to our health.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I could create so many more bullet points, but these are the most important, in my mind, at the moment. As Tyler said, think about your friends, family, coworkers, classmates, and other people in your life. Think about their identities and their hometowns and what might be at stake for them in this election. The impacts are far greater than your own person, but your vote as an individual is incalculably important. Why else would Republicans be working so hard to suppress your voting power if it wasn't?? So please!! Vote! Vote for you and your friends and your family and everyone important in your life! Their health, basic human rights, and wellbeing are at stake!

There's another example where where a single vote determined not only the outcome of a race, but actually determined which party controlled a legislative chamber. In 2017, Shelly Simonds was one vote ahead in her race for the Virginia House of Delegates, but then one disputed ballot was ruled for her opponent, David Yancey, the Republican incumbent. That forced the race to be a 50/50% tie, resulting in drawing a name to determine the winner. Yancey won, which meant that Republicans controlled the Virginia House of Delegates by a 51-49 majority, allowing Republicans to control the chamber like setting rules for the session, determine committee chairs, etc. Had Simonds won, the chamber would have been split 50-50, requiring negotiating and compromise and some sort of power-sharing arrangement. One vote resulted in a name drawn out of the hat which determine which party controlled an entire legislative chamber. VOTING MATTERS.

I am voting because I can't stomach another four years of the hateful, repressive, awful world that we live in right now. I want to see change for the LGBTQ+ community, the black community, etc. WOMEN. I'm a woman and Trump doesn't care about my rights, either. I am terrified of what the results of this election could be, but at least if I cast my vote for Biden in I know that I did my part to try and help change the world for the better.

  • @peppanotpepper4672
    @peppanotpepper4672 4 роки тому +1

The first time I voted was the last election term. The day it was announced who our new president was, my LGBTQ+ friends had come together to support each other and mourn. They were scared for the rights and safety. I have worked in a school where some of my students did not know where they were going to sleep that night and the free lunch the school provided on Friday would be the most substantial thing they would have to eat until Monday morning when they had breakfast at school. I have worked at a variety of places supporting individuals with different abilities and I continue to fight for the world to look at how amazing they are and look past the challenges they may have. The current administration makes my loved ones fearful, including my LGBTQ+ friends, my fellow females, as well as my family members who are high risk, including my mother, who will not make it if she contracts COVID-19. I vote to protect my loved ones, my students, those who are under my care, and everyone around me, even those who may have different political beliefs. This is why I vote.
If anything, vote in honor of those who did not have the right to vote in the past and those who are unjustly denied the ability to vote today.

I live in Indiana where gerrymandering was so well done by the republicans in 2013 that many democrat votes haven't mattered ever since. The state's district maps are drawn so that Indianapolis is split into four congressional districts! I wish the Black Lives Movement would make ending gerrymandering one of their top priorities because many black votes don't matter in Indiana.
I vote with the hope that in the future every vote will matter. I vote so that myself and others can proud of our state and country some day. I'm not proud to say that in my state the politicians get to pick their voters instead of the other way around. We need an independent commission drawing the voting districts. Voter suppression has also occurred in Indiana where some counties had multiple locations to vote early while Marion county where Indianapolis is only had only one.
I vote because gerrymandering means that many elections are decided during the primary and the most extreme person on the left or right wins. I vote because I hope the US Supreme court will preserve the freedoms that we still have. Our country's highest court has been corrupted by Sen. Mitch McConnell who refused to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court nine months ahead of the 2016 election. When a conservative justice is picked and nominated in 2020 the hearings go ahead with less than two months before the election.
I vote because I hope for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for everyone, not just the billionaires who can afford to get what they want by giving money to those who will do their bidding. I vote with the hope that someday President Donald Trump will pay his fair share of taxes.

I don't know where you live, but in some states, you are voting whether or not to retain them. Depending on the level of judge they are. For instance when i lived in Colorado, they would have attorneys (defense and plaintiff sides) file a statement and also I think it was the bar association recommendation or complaints. All that was listed in the voter pamphlet and we would vote on whether or not each judge should be retained. I assume that they are just appointed originally. But, yeah, you didn't really vote for them.

One of my concerns is that many of my friends are voting 3rd party. I do truly wish we weren't in the place we are as far as parties go, but to me...this isn't the election to use your voice for someone who is truly not going to win at all. It's all still Democrat vs Republican in the US for the most part, so voting 3rd party when SO much is at stake (especially Disabled, Womex, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities go) seems like a slap in the face. Even if the people voting 3rd party are members of those communities. It's just all very scary and yeah, everyone is defensive no matter how they are voting.
Oh! For anyone who is unfamiliar with the voting system in America, we use an electoral college to vote. So even if most of the country votes for one person, it still comes down to how many people in that state does. Each state has a different amount of "points" and those points lead to who is actually elected. (I'm not great at explaining things but I think people in other comments talk about the electoral college.)

I'm voting because I'm desperate to have human decency and compassion back in the White House. We need a leader that puts all the people America has to offer above his personal agenda. A leader that supports the people that don't support him. I'm tired of waking up everyday and having to worry about the recklessness of our commander in chief. We need someone that will unify everyone and make sure that we're all protected and treated equally under the law. Vote for our brothers and sisters that don't have the privilege that you do. Even if you don't agree with Joe Biden, I truly believe he'll put us on the right path and lead us into a better direction.

You guys talked about how America is has a more independent culture. I was just reading about this yesterday how most cultures are the world are collectivist & look out for the greater good of everyone. However, American culture is very independent. Whether that's in voting only for what would help you or having a capitalist competition mentality where you have to look out for yourself to get to the top. It's a very interesting topic.

The electoral college system used for the presidential race renders many individual votes useless because it all comes down to majorities in swing states. However, powerful messages are sent when the popular vote contradicts the results of the electoral college, which will hopefully lead to its eventual abolishment.
Additionally, voting for your state and federal senators and representatives is almost more important than the vote for the presidential election.
So your vote matters - even if it doesn’t affect the outcome.
