  • There have been few greater interpreters of the German repertoire than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and James King. I am pleased to present a fragment from a historical German-language adaptation of Don Carlo where we can hear and see them together. No copyright infringement, I have uploaded one extract for its educational value.
I invite you to comment on their performances as well as how you think German, the language of Schiller, affects the poetry of this libretto and the style of the music. After reviewing many important scenes I felt Posa's death presented some especially interesting opportunities. 8:15 struck me, Dietrich is really masterful in the way he's playing with the diction here, the stronger consonances we have in this language make it all the more effective I think when he begins to slur his speech, you really get the feeling of a disorientation that you may not have gotten to same extent otherwise.
The entire performance is an extremely powerful night and makes for my personal favorite version of Don Carlo captured by a camera for its stellar cast of serious dramatic dimension. I highly recommend the commercially-available DVD version. For further reference and research the date of this performance is 1965 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin 1965, the remaining players in this scene are Josef Greindal as King Phillip and Martti Tavela as the Grand Inquisitor.

Danke für dieses Dokument ....ich bin nicht gerade ein Fan von DFD, aber von James King ( beide übrigens gleichaltrig ). Als Dokument unschätzbar wertvoll.....es grüßt ein alter Opernfreund❤

I was tought it was really bad singing translated music. It is funny thinking it is wrong singing Verdi in german or Wagner in italian when nowadays modern productions are destroying the original composer thought of the work. Wagner himself accepted and assisted to varios of his operas performed in Italy in italian. Verdi wrote Don Carlos aswell in french. Same did Donizetti.

Thank you for the constructive criticism. I certainly agree with you about several modern productions these days.

Don Carlos is perfectly fine in German, after all, it's just going back to the source. And the translation is quite good.
I've also seen I masnadieri in German a few months ago and it worked nicely.
