Unfortunately for him his rockabilly style quickly became dated, he tried to stay with the formula that made him famous but after blue suede shoes his subsequent records sold poorly, so he worked where he could and performed wherever he could, then decided the country music scene was easier to make a living out of.
He just wasn't up there with his peers as far as singing was concerned, the record buying public of the time is proof of that.
He was a great guitarist and performed and and fairly competent song writer, ultimately making more money out of writing country music for other acts and helping them out in their shows

Remembering Carl Perkins born on April 9, 1932. He was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. A rockabilly great and pioneer of rock and roll, he began his recording career at the Sun Studio, in Memphis, beginning in 1954. Among his best-known songs are "Blue Suede Shoes", "Honey Don't", "Matchbox" and "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby". - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Perkins

Didn't realize how talented and great musician Carl Perkins was it looks like he got swallowed up by a lot of the Elvis Hysteria but this guy was unbelievable. His guitar playing and music writing was off the chart greatness. I find myself looking for his live performances all over the Internet nowadays.

He was briefly bigger than Elvis (Carl was the first Sun artist to sell a million records), but when he was about to make his first national TV appearance, he and his brother were badly injured in a car accident en route. Elvis appeared on Milton Berle's show and sang Blue Suede Shoes, and the rest is history.

My dad ran an electronic store in south Jackson/Bemis community for 25 years... (60s, 70s & early 80s)
During this time period, CBs were king, 8 tracks were the new thing, and TVs required vacuum tubes.
At this time Carl would come in occasionally to pick up vacuum tubes for his amplifiers.
As a teenager in the late 70s- I didn't really understand who or just how important this "local musician" really was.
I can remember one day my father and I were visiting someone at the
    Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
The doors opened and Carl stepped on.
    My dad said, "hey Carl".
And Carl added, " hey George".
    (conversation broke out...
and Carl never seemed too busy to speak to my Dad)
Not only was he the real deal and a legend-he was such a nice man !

Yes but his fans are not very objectiv...when they think he is able to play like chuck berry....
Or others gréât rockers as jerry lee little richard...
And elvis voice is amazing for slow songs like it is now or never, love me tender
But not particular voice for rocks songs... not so fast as jerry lee,not the vélocity of little richard..

Carl playing an early 1958 Jazzmaster.
Unfortunately, the Bear Family THP releases are not cleaned up much especially the audio.
The show's production arm contracted with an outside vendor to kinescope the shows off-air instead of the more reliable off-line on site method. The off air method was literally recording the broadcast signal along with any and all reception issues.
Extant THP footage ranges from fair to bad, particularly over modulated audio as heard here.
Much like the entities that are digitizing episodes of "Ozark Jubilee", which ran roughly the same years as THP, someone should attempt to properly restore the THP footage.

Post Sun Records Perkins doing his latest Columbia releases.
He has slightly toned down his intensity level from his 1956 Ozark Jubilee and Perry Como appearances.
Earlier, I make mention of his playing a 1958 Jazzmaster. Based on the rosewood neck and the aluminum pickguard, it conforms more to an early 1959 model.
However, inasmuch as Leo Fender was supplying equipment to the show, it could be a pre production rosewood necked 1958.
It is a " house " guitar as it turns up in the Gene Vincent episode in the hands of one of the show's guitar players.
