The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

RIP Jerry Lee Lewis (September 29, 1935 - October 28, 2022), aged 87
You will be remembered as a legend
RIP Jerry Lee Lewis 🌹 🎹🎤
💙❤ 😇🎹🎤 🌹
And a pedo
And lest we forget, this man was so talented, he only needed one take to record GREAT BALLS OF FIRE! Yup, the version we all know and love is it, baby!
more like remembered for being a cousin marrier...disgusting
2:16 That was fire af 🔥
His voice is so underrated. I don't know what it is, whether it is his timing or tone, but it is just so f***ing good. Add to that his charisma, presence and piano playing... Wow.
Ya - his tone is super clean and extremely authentic "American",
@MegOh! Businesses True, and it was a long slow climb back but he certainly recovered and reinvented himself, first on the country charts (newest inductee to country music hall of fame) and then in the rock and roll revival show circuit
it's STURDY. and it got better with age.
wrong again Karen
God gave him timing and tone and soul
Elvis and Jerry Lee were the only 2 that had a syncopation an funk that other artists didn’t have. They really got under the beat in a way others didn’t
Not to forget Tom Jones
@@theelvisguru9490 Tom Jones, Little Richard, Stevie Wonders, and the list goes on ....I almost forgot my favorite the uncomparable ARETHA FRANKLIN. By the way I'm a 81 year old White dude 😂
@@juille2779 I’m talking about white rock and rollers not soul singers that obviously had funk! And I don’t agree about Tom Jones
@@juille2779 It all started, whatever stupid color, from the southern gospel churches. They all played the same stuff and invented the basis of rock and roll...
You started your silly post with no colour then had to make colour an argument when you got educated Pathetic + Elvis copied a lot from Little Richard. Lewis also copied Richard.@@theelvisguru9490
If there was anyone who understood that the piano is a percussion instrument it was Jerry Lee Lewis.
He is not playing the back ground music. If you watch his hands it is very easy to see that.
By
You are correct. The piano is indeed a percussion instrument...
As someone who plays piano, his skill amazes me. Whenever your hands come off the keys and reach for a new spot, it is incredible muscle memory to hit the right key. He does it effortlessly with giant reaches and huge movement. Amazing.
@@jesseandjan the video is slightly out of sync, Common in old videos "dubbed" to digital.
Let's give a round of applause to the sound engineers on Ed's show. They were the best.
Fk that...its ALL JERRY LEE!
Most rock artists brought their own sound crew in as Sullivan was known for screwing up mixes.
@@StanSwan Really? Was it just the rock? Because I have heard dozens of incredible jazz performances on the show.
@@StanSwan I used to manage a live music venue and it drove us nuts having fights with our crew and the bands. Usually, we won because they weren't familiar with our setup, but we had a few massive failures when we let them do it themselves. At least they never wanted to run the lights or stage effects. Lol
@@know_not_wickedness I would guess things are a lot different these days? Now a band can control just about everything as there are so many outlets for them to put themselves out there. In the old days to be on TV there were only 3 networks that had a monopoly. It was great for the Beatles but not so great for a new artist to break through.
And that my friends is natural Talent
That is the King of Rock n Roll.
Unnatural from the pits of hell. Don't believe me? He even says he's plays the devils music and has the devil in him.
That is also years and years of work, he had said he played everywhere and anywhere.
@@woooose what an absurd comment!
Too bad that immense talent is in a pedophile
RIP Jerry Lee Lewis. The last of the first has left us. Godspeed.
Well said sir, rip Jerry Lee ❤️🙏
He murdered multiple women...
@ 6to 1 NO he didn't !! Get your Facts right !!
His piano and entertainment skills...he knew how to wow a crowd. That’s for damn sure.
He was the quintessential performer for an entire lifetime through several generations.
Total GOD!

He was a pedophile.
he married his cousin...
@@shewolfcub3 So the european Royale...
Best of the best!
He married his cousin
I've never seen Sullivan be so excited. Cool.
Hard to believe that Sullivan had the chance to put him on in the 50s and rejected him - the reason he went to Steve Allen!
Yes, kinda funny to see that reaction compared to 10/15 years before when he was against Rock n Roll etc...
@@rudiaction5002 Yeah, Ed had to be conviced that Rock´n´Roll was a good thing. He also rejected Elvis at first but had to give in eventually.
It was fun to see Ed Sullivan so enthused. I wanted to see more of that from him.
@@rudiaction5002 Was this his only appearance on Ed's show?
Anybody that rocks a piano nowadays owes this guy
Freddy Mercury come close alittle
@@havok9001 Little Richard even.
He learned from Ray charles, fats domino, Little richard, Billy preston, thelonious monk, professor longhair, Allen toussaint, just the name a few
@@truthtellerbelievethat1813well just because they came before him does not necessarily mean he learned from them. From a practical standpoint, it is even unlikely. No tv, no youtube etc. Jerry Lee grew up very poor.
He was just 34 here, but it’s noticeable he was not a kid anymore. The good thing is: Jerry is still alive and kicking! And that talent, wow!
He looked like he was 55 lol
Suprisingly the last survivor of the original greats.
Geez, he looks about 45
@@Alexandros11 that's what you get for living a hard fast life
Sadly passed away today. Rip to the first punk. A rebellious anti establishment wayfarer that did it his way and damn commercialism. A true free spirit.
❤ Vila i frid Jerry
We are running out of legitimate rockstars. RIP, Killer.
agree ... won't be my sons doing. Bunged some music off to their parents 4 sons nonetheless and babies loved!
Too bad this wasn't longer than a medley. He was on FIRE.
@aaron singer You are miserable
Best representation of Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis in his prime.
The true king of RnR and County music Jerry Lee Lewis
Yeah he was something!
53 years later this performance it's still overwhelming and astonishing. What a true legend, a rock founding father.
there's a total lack of TALENT these days- it's all autotune sht. Hell you and I could sing like cats on a hot tin roof and it would be all computerised to sound like Ed Sheeran
Little Richard was great rocking the Piano but Jerry Lee Lewis took it to a whole other level.
It was probably all the meth
@@6to1right because using meth makes for a great musician
That's it then, that closes the book on the greatest times for rock & roll, for me any way. He may have been a villain to some that came after, but his wild driving music was the background to me & thousands of others in Britain in the '60's. Take a break, Killer.
That's rock n' roll!!!
They don't make 'em like Jerry Lee Lewis anymore! What a show he was and the entertainer! The KIller is gone but not his music. RIP Jerry, thanks for the music and the show!
The King
It's "The Killer's" 86th birthday, and I want to thank you guys for sharing this video!
Absolutely outstanding performance he was a wild child with a wild style great performer
What do you mean was!? The killer is still with us, and was even gigging regularly up until a few years ago, though a combination of rapidly approaching ninety, the emergence of Covid, and his eternally het-up red assed curmudgeonly nature may have put the kibosh him doing shows anymore. One of the most fascinating and electric performers ever!
@@douglaspatrick868 Mr Patrick you are correct
@@douglaspatrick868 "One of the most fascinating and electric performers ever!" Well said. I totally agree! 👍

He didn’t mind getting wild with a child either
A sad day. 🎹A legend and my idol just died. JESUS HUG JERRY AND LET HIM SHINE IN YOUR HEAVENLY LIGHT !✝

He literally DID have a piano painted with flames 😅
Don’t worry Jerry even if you’re dead you are forever and your songs will remember because I’m 22 years old and I hope some people in my 20s love you and I hope in the future too
Gotta love Ed’s reaction at the end, he was loving it too. I Wouldn’t be surprised if he’d tried getting Jerry Lee on back in his prime
This guys runs circles around todays mainstream “talent”.
Website please 🙏
I took my mother to see Jerry Lee for her birthday back in 2000 here in Tulsa. It was the most we ever bonded over one thing in my whole life of 41 years.
I saw him live in the mid 80's. Amazing.
A complete one off, there can never be another like Jerry Lee. Incredible talent, energy and attitude. Just amazing.
Is the last man standing!
Jerry Lee was one of a kind with a style of his own. . .I remember seeing him in our high school auditorium in the 60's and when he kicked back piano stool, the auditorium erupted in cheers, R.I.P. Jerry, that band in heaven is getting bigger every day, but now they have the wildest piano player ever
Amen to that 🙏💞🏩

R.I.P. Jerry Lee Lewis (1935-2022)🕊
Another amazing musician has left us
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and loved ones during this very difficult time💔😔
What a performer!!! An early pioneer of Rock and Roll. RIP🙏🙏🙏
I’m convinced music is the closest thing we will ever have to a Time Machine
My grandmother was the biggest George Jones fan, and she use to tell me her favorite quality was his ability to sing a sad song and be able to hear the sadness in his voice. And I would counter that Jerry Lee Lewis was the master of that quality... Everybody thinks about the fire and passion of whole lot of shaking or Great balls of fire. But in the sixties when he turned the country music and would record those songs you could hear the pain and sadness in his voice no matter what he sung it bring you to tears cuz you knew he felt whatever he was saying about I think that is a quality not many have but he had it in spades
Rest In Peace Jerry Lee Lewis 😭
I was born in 1993 but I grew up to music like this and I'm 31 now and still love music like this ❤
RIP King 😥👏👏👏🎹
RIP, Jerry! The other king of Rock and Roll!
He was absolutley incredible. Who else could perform like him and have the balls to show up to Elvis's front gates, calling him out, while waving a pistol. JLL forever!!!
Rest in peace Killer. This clip should be shown to the young ones so a whole new generation can see how great he really was.
Imagine trying to follow him up next, on stage. JLL absolutely amazing talent.
Here, at the apex of his powers, you're looking at simply a colossus of American music. Mercy indeed.
