This is how rock n roll started. Clapton, J Page, Hendrix all of them started playing blues like several black musicians from south, Mississippi Delta Thank you blues
In the early 90’s I moved to Philly to play music. I had an old Oldsmobile with a mismatch hood and a greatest hits cassette of John Lee Hooker. Now that I’m older I look back and smile at all the trim I got in that car with John Lee Hooker as the soundtrack. R.I.P. King
It's genius how he mainly plays the one chord per song, he alludes to playing different ones in a progression but instead actually maintains the same chord. Sounds so simplistic but shows how intelligent his understanding is of progressions and phrasing, not like his guitar playing is in question at all.
Allot of country blues is played in one chord. Boom Boom, Muddys Catfish Blues, I like the open G tuning Hooker uses on Crawlin Kingsnake. I've seen allot of those guys and talked to them. I play a couple National Duolians a Gibson LG2. But it's the couple Harmony Archtops I have that hooked up my playing. Which is pretty simple. Fewer notes more soul. Cary in Tucson
He was illiterate to the day he died, but was a genius. I saw a video of his manager helping him write his name on a stack of pick guards and it taught me not to judge someone because they have different talents than you. You don’t judge a great baker for not being a brain surgeon. This man touched souls and enhanced humanity and still does from beyond the grave….. oh yeah, and he couldn’t read or write, so.
Johnny fans - check out ‘drugstore women’ and ‘big legs tight skirt’. I’ve listened to each I’d say 36 times. Well, I did get interrupted once, but it only took me a few seconds to kill them. Yes- nothing but the best my friend. Indeed! Don’t forget r. L. Burnside folks if you don’t know him- figures if you love this man, well, you might love another as well. Why not? I don’t know but why- they both tend to ignore traditional 12 bar bar blues. It’s like Johnny just never quite ‘got’ the ‘need’ of a ‘constant’ ‘pattern’. Which is why I find him to be my fave of ‘em - as highlighted by my perky, lively verse. Check out R. L. Burnside ( ‘see my jumper hangin’ out on the line’ maybe my favorite song title of all time - because you indeed know that something may or may not be on his mind. I’m guessing it probably pretty much was. And THIS guy, one of the sexiest men, ever.
@Thomas Headley I was thrilled to find Hooker and Heat at Spotify. Canned + JLH is all I'm listening at the moment. I play along on my Telecaster, just getting into the groove, eyes closed, foot tapping, fingers wandering... It feels so good, not sure if anyone else would enjoy it though 😇
Just imagine how many countries in the world wish they had ONE John Lee Hooker to call their native son. America has been…and will always be great because of the blues. You’re welcome, world.
If you research about the history, meaning and catalyst of Blues (as a musical genre, which, as any other musical genre, emerged in a historical context and not in a vacuum), then you will start perceiving Blues not as American merit and pride, but rather quite the opposite: as musical genre (on of many in African-American culture) as a way to sublimate suffering and suppression imposed on these people BY ‘great nation of America’.
Amazing footage!! Im so grateful for the people who had everything to do with getting it here!!!

Pete Townshend benefitted from listening to John, too

You can't convince me this isn't the greatest video on this entire website.
Amazingly, some involved with P.B.S. setting a solid high standard in music back in the day.
Это не оспорить,не понять.И слышать и слушать бесконечно.
This is like music from a dream world
Oh yeah
Been on radio since I was little. I'm 80 years old and still love black Blue's.

Thank you for explaining this musically. 🎶
Ye
Years of struggle.
Yes he’s very modal in his song structure, heavy emphasis on da groove
Mississippi Fred McDowell has that same kinda hypnotic drone. I can listen and be entranced for hours.
Proof that PBS and NPR have always been great places to find excellent music!!
Thank you.❤
